She was meant to be sacrificed. He chose to keep her for himself.
Aurelia
Six years ago, I gave away a secret that cost me my life. Now the Bratva wants payment.
Elijah Romano was always off-limits—my brother’s best friend, my protector, my quiet obsession. Before they take me, I’ll make him break every promise he ever made.
But it’s Nikolai Orlov who shatters everything. The man sent to deliver me to my death becomes the one thing I can’t resist. His touch burns through the lies I was built on, his darkness calling to mine until fear and want become indistinguishable.
And then there’s Adrian—a caged criminal with too many secrets and nothing left to lose. In a world built on blood, he’s the wild card who makes hell feel almost warm.
Sweet Manipulation is a dark, addictive mafia romance about obsession, betrayal, and a mafia princess who was never meant to survive and the man who loved her enough to destroy them both.
[I received a copy of this book from the publisher/author. This review reflects my honest and unbiased opinion]
THE WHAT Aurelia (“Ace”), an Italian mafia princess, has been kept hidden at the De Luca Estate for years due to a peace deal that requires any daughters born into the family to be handed over to the rival family. Eventually, she comes face-to-face with Nikolai, the son and heir of the Orlov Bratva crime family. What will this meeting mean for Aurelia’s future?
THE VIBE Dark romance, enemies to lovers, morally grey male main character, mafia princess, Bratva mafia, slow burn, kidnapping.
THE HOW The story is told through multiple POV’s. I did find it a little bit unnecessary at times and thought that some of the POV’s added confusion. The author also included flashbacks that provided additional background and helped the story.
THE HIT The mafia world building and tension between the two families worked well. The story delivers on the promise of a true mafia dark romance.
THE MISS The first half’s writing style felt unnatural, and the story doesn’t offer anything innovative. The romance and plot are predictable at times. I also felt that some of the emotional shifts between characters were sudden and unnatural. I did think that the pacing picked up in the second half which helped the story be more engaging.
THE REC: If you enjoy mafia romance with a touch of danger and forbidden love, this will satisfy. Overall, it is a casual, entertaining read.
THE OVERALL: Overall, I would rate this book as follows:
Okay…. I’m not a huge mafia dark romance reader, but I could not put this book down!! I was hooked from the beginning.
My fav is when the FMC is a baddie! AND a mafia princess! I loved the multiple POVs in this book.
I absolutely loved Nik and Ace and how much he absolutely was obsessed with her from the first time he met her. I also love that would/did unalive anyone for her.
I do feel that it was a little drawn out in certain areas and that the Russian wasn’t translated right after it was said in the book, I kept having to google it which was not my favorite.
I felt like this mafia romance was different. She wasn’t supposed to be born so her dad was keeping her hidden until he couldn’t anymore and she was taken. At first i thought the mmc was her brothers best friend but it wasn’t!
I loved this book! All of the MMCs are entertaining and I loved the FMC. Ace (FMC), really had some men wrapped around her finger! But she was only meant for Nikolai ! I loved watching their relationship grow and feel their emotions. The entire plot was great! I loved the multiple POVs! Def a book id recommend to others !
Read in 2/2026. 4 stars!! Absolutely loved this. Ace is such a badass FMC and I loved all the tropes in this. One thing about me, is ima eat up a bully x kidnapping trope ANY DAY of the WEEK! I loved where this story went and I’m on my hands and knees begging for the second book 🙈
4.5⭐️ I loved Sweet Manipulation so much, it had a freshness to it for a mafia romance and added a new dimension to the storyline that I couldn’t put it down. The storyline was not expected for me and the twists really had me at the edge of my seat. It was fast paced and very easy to read that I didn’t want to put it down and was really locked in on reading it.
The story follows the FMC name Aurelia, nicknamed Ace. She is a part of the De Luca mafia family. She is a feisty thing who is stronger than she looks but also highly intelligent. Her character is very likable and her banter with everyone is hilarious. Her journey is one that I enjoyed seeing, it has a lot of bumps but the end result is beautiful.
We also have three MMC’s in this book, it is not a why choose though, she does pick one. We have Elijah, her brother’s best friend and is in charge of her protection. Adrian is a criminal who is sweet to her in the darkest of times. And Nikolai, part of the Orlov mafia family, kidnaps her to deliver her to death.
I’m not a lover of love triangles usually but I loved each one of the MMC’s at points throughout the book. I’m definitely happy with who she ended up with, thinking it was a perfect match.
There is so much going on in this book that my attention was always focused. There is also Dual timelines, where you get to see the past and the present, which just adds so much to the story, as your slowly figure out things that happened in the past that made the characters into who they are in the present. As well as getting multiple POV’s, you get Aurelia’s, Elijah’s, Adrian’s, and Nikolai’s so you’re getting the full picture and everyone’s thought processes which made me enjoy the story and feel like I understood each character better.
I’m really looking forward to the next books in the series, especially the next book being Enzo’s, Aurelia’s brother, I’m going to eat it up.
If you’re looking for a dark mafia romance, Italian and Russian mafia’s, kidnapper x captive, with a strong FMC and 3 MMC’s and a morally grey cast then I highly recommend this book for you. Releasing February 2nd.
This book is the perfect mix of tension, chemistry, and emotional depth. Julia Emma knows exactly how to pull you into the characters’ minds and make you feel everything—every longing glance, every power shift, every moment where you’re not sure who’s really in control. The dynamic between the characters is addictive, layered, and so well written that I found myself thinking about them even when I wasn’t reading.
What really stood out to me was how intentional the pacing felt. Nothing was rushed, nothing dragged, and every scene served a purpose. The dialogue was sharp, the atmosphere was intense, and the emotional payoff was absolutely worth it. I loved how the story balanced sweetness with manipulation in a way that felt believable and compelling rather than overdone.
If you enjoy character-driven stories with strong chemistry, tension you can feel, and writing that pulls you in and doesn’t let go, this is a must-read.
It has an enemy-ish to lovers ... but friends to lovers vibe.
The story goes between flashbacks and present for a considerable amount of the book, and it makes you feel the whole picture of the plot slowly and from diferent pov's, that makes you enjoy it even more.
The plot was good enough to hooked you since chapter one. The writting is really easy to follow.
The FMC although it's a little reckless and naive, has a fire and feistiness that makes you feel so much empathy for her.
As for the MMCs, Adrian is that fun, flirty friend. Elijah, is that toxic man who likes you, but hurt you the most. And I get it, I understand why he did what he did, but just couldn't stand the guy. Now, Nikolai, a dangerous, cruel man yet the cutest, caring human when it comes to Aurelia. He is a green flag with anger issues kinda guy. That thing with the rubber band therapy made me smile like an idiot.
This was the first book I read of this author, and now I'm more than happy to wait for the rest of the series.
DNF I tried, I really tried. By 36% I have given up. Mafia romance - the fmc is a mafia princess of you can call her that really. We at this point have 3 POV and I feel like there may be another BUT literally nothing has happened. The past & present tense is actually more annoying than helpful. The fmc is literally using her looks for information knowing she will get the men she touches killed due to the fact she is a mafia princess. She sits in her room pining after a man who she claims to think she loves but is throwing herself at him knowing she will get him killed. I just don’t like any characters at all.
Loved the Rapunzel- esque take on this mafia tale where power is the goal and safety is just an illusion- especially where family is concerned.
Aurelia is a sheltered Italian mafia princess, a secret tucked away by her family under the guise of protection. Trained from a young age to withstand anything this life can throw at her. That is, until she met him.
While there are several male POVs in this one, it’s clear to me that there could only be one true winner of Aurelia’s heart in the end. We’ve got Elijah, the brother’s best friend and her childhood crush. Nikolai, heir to the enemy and more than meets the eye. And Adrian, the criminal with a troubled past and plenty of secrets of his own.
Nikolai’s chapters were some of my favorite to read, especially as we learned more about the back story between him and Aurelia. This was further solidified with a dual timeline that really filled in the rest of the blanks and made his obsession with her crystal clear! I love the way he accepted every part of her, and even encouraged her fire to flare brightly without fearing the flames.
The events in the last few chapters provided some nice twists and a satisfying ending to Aurelia’s main story. I know this is not the last time we’ll see her and several other favorites, and can’t wait to see what comes next for them all.
ARC REVIEW: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/🌶️.5 This book was such a pleasant surprise and a much-needed breath of fresh air in the mafia romance space. I’ve read a lot of mafia this year, and after a while the plots can start to blur together—but Sweet Manipulation genuinely stood out.
I loved the cadence of the story, the multiple POVs, and especially the sharp banter woven throughout the cast. It’s a slow burn across the board, giving us a group of compelling MMCs paired with one truly badass FMC you can’t help but root for. I’ll forever be weak for a mafia man who’s only soft for her, but what really sold me was that she isn’t relying on just one—she has an entire lineup of men ready to throw down in her honor, and I ate that up.
This story leans heavily into plot over spice (though there is some), which I appreciated. The world-building felt intentional, the pacing was solid, and Julia Emma’s writing was incredibly easy to follow. I also loved the inclusion of the Russian glossary—it added an extra layer of immersion that made the story even more enjoyable.
I’m thrilled this is the start of a series because I’m already invested in the rest of the characters and can’t wait to see where their stories go. Overall, this was a strong, story-forward mafia romance that completely exceeded my expectations, and I’m very excited for what’s next.
Sweet Manipulation completely pulled me in. I felt so connected to the characters and their dynamic—it was intense, emotional, and impossible to stop thinking about. The mix of sweetness and control hit harder than I expected, and I flew through the pages. This book made me feel things, and I already want to reread it.
I picked this up thinking cute little read and instead it rewired my brain. The tension? Criminal. The emotional manipulation? Deliciously painful. I was kicking my feet, stressing, questioning my life choices, and still begging for more. This book grabbed me by the throat politely and did not let go. I am not the same person after this.
The brother's best friend. The Russian heir. And the man with many secrets.
Chaos. Danger. Secrets. Desire. My poor heart can't handle all of this 😩🔥
Think Rapunzel. But this one is darker, deadlier, and comes with a very hot protector. Her tower is a mafia castle, and she stabs instead of sings 🔪 No fairytale hair tricks here. Just a bit of danger, the kind that makes your heart race before you even realize it 💥
*ARC review* This was my first mafia romance, and I was not disappointed. The FMC is a fiery, strong and powerful character who also had a vulnerable side, I immediately loved her. There are a couple of MMC's, but Nikolai had my heart from his first appearance. He's giving touch her and die (in Russian). The world building was interesting without being too heavy, and I felt it was romance forward but not over the top on the spice. Perfect balance! There is also a Russian glossary which is a really nice touch, as I didn't want to miss out on anything from Nikolai. I'm really excited to read the next book in the series!
I’ve received this as an ARC and ended devouring it in a day, couldn’t put it down even if I try to convince myself with the usual just one more chapter mantra. Is not your typical mafia romance that you are thinking, I loved all the different POVs. How Aurelia, our FMC, is just unapologetically herself and knows how to survive in a world where there’s no space for women.
An absolutely 5 star read for me, and can’t wait to continue the series! Thank you to the author for letting me read this first, can’t wait for the rest.
The suspense in this book was on point! I truly wasn’t sure how this book would spin out between Aurelia, Elijah, Aiden and Nikolai but I’m happy with the outcome! Want to know? Guess you will have to read it! I can’t wait for Enzo’s book!
Was blessed to be a Beta Reader for this new novel by Julia, and I was instantly sucked into this violent and deadly world.
Born into a life you wouldn’t even wish upon a worst enemy, Aurelia was put under extreme training all her life for the inevitable moment that she were to be discovered by their rivals and kidnapped for leverage. But they would be damned if she didn’t go down fighting.
Aurelia is a kick ass female lead. Mix in some dark romance, some mafia drama, violence and then just people wanting to be anything but what they were born for? I’ll eat it up. Russian mafia vs Italian mafia just makes sense. Multiple male leads but I knew who I wanted for my girl to end up with. Potential for a throple? Would be nice, but I understand the desire to not share what is mine.
The spice was there, the mind fucks were consistent, and the constant instinct to not trust anyone we meet even applied to people we feel like we should trust no matter what. In that sense, it was enjoyable and can’t wait for the next installment!

Ahh I loved this book, it’s a great mafia romance with a resilient FMC. She was trained to endure and that she did. It was a quick and fun read. A morally black MMC you couldn’t help but love with touch her and die energy. This is a wonderful read that keeps you engaged the whole time . There was just enough spice well written without being overly done and was authentic. I loved learning who the characters were at their core versus the roles that have been forced to play their whole lives.
Tropes: Dark romance, Mafia romance, Enemies-to-Lovers, Forced proximity, Obsessive/possessive MMC, Curvy FMC, Age gap, Trauma/Hurt
Note going forward: Possible spoilers
A note of caution: please read trigger warnings. Some of the things the FMC goes through can/may be triggering for some.
Aurelia. Daughter of a mafia don, she's not supposed to exist. Women aren't supposed to be on the island. That was the agreement between her father and the head of the Russian mob. She never knew her mother, and saw her father sporadically. As a spoiled girl, she was given everything she could desire … except relationships. She has no friends, rarely gets to spend time with her father, and the most time she spends with her brother is for training. Training for any possible scenario, including kidnapping and torture of all kinds from physical to psychological. Her brother's best friend is her obsession. She knows she can't have him, but she fantasizes that he'll choose her over his responsibilities.
They bring over a friend for her, someone they vetted. On her birthday, she decides she wants to go to a club. She ends up meeting Nikolai Orlov, the heir to the Russian mob, and while they connect, the families can't mix.
But Nikolai wants her all to himself.
And when she does get kidnapped, she does what she can, including manipulation, sometimes unknowingly. But Nikolai is doing some manipulating of his own. And so is her brother.
This story is wild and is definitely worth the read. The tension is heavy, the story flows, the ending will make your jaw drop. There's a reason why reviewers are calling Aurelia a badass. She deserves the title. And while there's heat, it doesn't overshadow the plot of the story.
I can't wait for book #2!!
NB: Thank you, Julia, for the chance to ARC read for you. An ARC copy does not, and never has, guaranteed a 5-star review from me. All opinions in this review are my own.
I don’t even know where to start because WOW… this book absolutely wrecked me in the best way. Dark, intense, emotional, and addictive from page one, I couldn’t put it down. If you love mafia romance, this one deserves a spot at the top of your list.
Aurelia, aka Ace, is hands down one of my favorite FMCs. She’s fierce, funny, intelligent, and unapologetically herself. She’s not some fragile mafia princess. She’s been trained, shaped, and hardened by a world that doesn’t leave room for weakness, especially in women. And her banter? Top-tier.
And the men? Messy. Complicated. Dangerous. Delicious.
Elijah, her brother’s best friend and protector. Adrian, who shows up with softness in the darkest moments. And Nikolai, the man who kidnaps her and somehow becomes everything. The obsession, the danger, the devotion? I was living for it.
The story is packed with multiple POVs and dual timelines, which made everything hit even harder. Watching the past slowly unravel while the present explodes with chaos, secrets, and desire kept me fully locked in, and I felt like I truly understood every character’s motivations and emotions.
And the ending? PERFECT. Ace got the ending she deserved, and I was literally smiling from ear to ear. My heart was racing, I lost sleep, and I couldn’t stop thinking about what would happen next.
This book gave me everything: danger, passion, suspense, heartbreak, healing, all wrapped in one unforgettable story. I cannot wait for book two.
Thank you so much to the author, Julia Emma, for my #gifted copy of Sweet Manipulation.
Russian MMC Italian FMC Dark Mafia Romance Kidnapper v Captive Lies Who does she choose?
I want to say that this was so goood so amazing fantastic read you have Aurelia she is a girl who doesn't give a fuck on the guys who she kisses but she does care for people I love that she has a heart and has empathy then you have Nikolai who kidnaps Aurelia as well being a psychopath like he kills people if someone lay one finger on Aurelia like hello he doesn't care who they are and he doesn't let shilli pass either as well then you have Elijah he is something there were times where he piss me off bc the fmc Aurelia you can tell she was in love with him for years and the time she gets her heart broken by this gawd damn man like boy byeeee it was everytime too and then you have other characters like her brother Enzo who tries to protect her or whatnot and Adrian who just there that helps aurelia with things and ng| what happened to Adrian I felt bad i understand why Nikolai did what he did but that was to far and you could tell aurelia care as well but who would be Nikolai if it wasn't for him being lunatic hahaha oh boy was I obsessed with him yes I was tf omg I love him so much Nikolai can kidnap me and I wouldnt give af at all and the way he was speaking Russian and then knew how to speak it hello but overall without spoiling to much go and read it and report back and it's on ku
“You’re strong. Stronger than anyone I know. You fight me even when you shouldn’t. You protect people you care about—even when they don’t deserve it. And you’re…You’re beautiful. Not the kind men touch. The kind men worship. The kind that ruins them. The way you walk, the way you talk, the way you burn even when the world tries to put you out—I’ve never met anyone like you.”
Aurelia (aka Ace) spent her life being a secret and on her 16th birthday she gave away a secret that changed everything. Now 6 years later, lies and secrets are all she knows. Elijah is her brother's best friend and first love but off-limits. Nikolai is her biggest threat. Bratva born and raised and always in control. He is not stopping until Aurelia is right where he wants her.. next to him. Adrian has not left to lose, Ace is the light he's been looking for.
This was my last book of 2025, and what an AMAZING read this was. I couldn't put this down. The love, the drama, the obsession? Aurelia is a baddie! There were so many times I wanted to reach in and give her a hug; but so many other times I was cheering her on. She definitely can hold her own when needed and I loved that. All around the men in this story were good but Nikolai?! That man had me in a chokehold. The way he was always in control but cracked a little each time he's with Aurelia.. it just gave me all the feels!
3 MMC, Kidnapper x Captive, Italian and Russian mafia, 1st person, multiple POVs
Sweet Manipulation is a dark mafia romance and the first book in the Vows of the Vicious series, and it landed at 3 stars for me. The story follows Aurelia, trapped in a brutal criminal world where every move is monitored, every choice has consequences, and survival often means playing along with dangerous men and even more dangerous secrets. Adrian, a caged criminal with nothing left to lose, becomes the unpredictable wildcard in her life—the one person who makes her captivity bearable, even as his own obsessions and demons threaten to ruin them both. I really liked the atmosphere and intensity here: Julia Emma leans into obsession, power imbalance, and psychological tension, and Aurelia’s sharp, determined perspective kept me engaged. The chemistry between her and Adrian is combustible in that classic dark‑romance way, with plenty of push‑pull and morally grey decisions that will appeal to readers who love their romances twisted and high‑stakes. For me, this was a 3‑star read mainly because some elements felt a bit uneven—certain plot beats and emotional turns moved so fast that I wanted more nuance and time to sit with the characters and their choices. That said, it’s a strong start to a dark series with lots of potential, and fans of mafia romance, obsessive MMCs, and heroine‑in‑hell setups will likely be very into it. I received an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Elijah is her best friend and her forever protector.
Ace has been hidden in the De Luca Estate due to a peace deal. This requires that any daughter born into the family is handed over to a rival family.
She meets Nikolai who is heir to the Orlov Bratva Crime Family.
Vibes - - i love love the Russian mafia crime aspect. So beautifully written and enjoyable. - Dark Romance - Enemies to lovers - morally grey main characters - Badass FMC - major baddie which was sweet. - Slow burn - Kidnapping
Main thing i love - - I really enjoyed the multi pov aspect of the book the most. It helped build on the story and setting to get their different pov’s. It added a lot of character and thorough understanding. Nikolais obsession with Ace showing his love and that he would end anyone who hurt her and burn the world to the ground. - Author also included flashbacks to aid the pov’s. - Mafia world. The building and tension through this aspect made it a really enjoyable and easy to read. I did it in a day cause i could not put it down. - True mafia Romance. - Romance touched with danger and a forbidden love. - this book had it hooks in me from page 1. Ticked so many boxes and its **chefs kiss** amazing. It has suspense, drama, love and friendship.
9/10 Story 4/5 emotions 4/5 Spice.
Thank you so much for allowing me to read the arc.
OMG the way I ate this book up!! I am so happy that this was my first book of 2026. This wasn’t like some of the other mafia romances I’ve read before. Ace (Aurelia) is the hidden daughter of the Italian mafia leader, and she has been training since she was 16 to face anything this life throws at her. She is constantly protected by either her older brother Enzo or her brother’s best friend, Elijah. Ace has always had feelings for Elijah, but he’s off-limits, so the tension between them because of this was 😍🥵 When Nikolai, who is part of the Russian mafia, kidnaps Ace, he will do anything and everything in his power to keep her right beside him, even if that means people lose their lives. While she is Nikolai’s captive, Aurelia meets Adrian, a beacon of light in her darkest times. Aurelia was such a baddie and a mafia princess. Nikolai was the perfect morally grey, possessive, touch her and die MMC. He was absolutely obsessed with Aurelia from the first time they met, and I loved that he killed anyone who touched her. The dual timeline gave a clear picture of past events, and we see exactly why Nikolai is obsessed with Aurelia.
{arc review }it is was fantastic mindblowing the chemistry the action the spicy scenes everything 🥵 Let’s talk this Amazing awesome badass mafia princess Aurelia she is fierce strong beautiful she is very good at manipulation her life’s was not easy but she is Become so strong than any mafia princess I ever I read about before in mafia books before Let’s talk about handsome & dangerous men like Elijah & nikolai &Adrian They all are mind-blowing men One is bodyguard & brother Best friend { Elijah} Aurelia is off limits to her he does like her but she loved him but he broke her Heart Twice The next is bratva heir Nikolai who is magnificent men who is really obsessed & in love with Aurelia who is truly made for Aurelia he is maybe her captive but was also the one who truly give happiness in all those Chaos for her he can anything he can burn the world for and Adrian who is seems sweet but a same time dangerous flirty guy too she had chemistry with Elijah and Adrian too with Nikolai her chemistry is next level it is super hot and on fire I literally have goosebumps and butterflies by them 🥰🥵🙈 This story is a chief kiss 💋 I rate this arc 5/5 ✨
