Think Terry Pratchett, or Amelia Mellor. Magic, otherworldly, mysterious.

This is the first book in a new series.

As a librarian I loved this book. With fun, witty lines and lots of exciting events and characters.

Oliver Wormwood, in his thirteenth year is expected sign up as an apprentice (calling), along with all the others the same age.

With five older sisters who have thrilling and rewarding careers, Oliver struggles to understand where he’s headed. Then along comes librarian, Hieronymus.

And that’s just the first chapter!

I love the writing, crafted nicely, pitched beautifully for readers aged 10+ years old.

Genuinely interested in those self-returning library books and getting a stained glass window.

Hoping the next book is out soon!

Oliver Wormwood had woken early and rushed to the village square to start the rest of his life. What would his calling be? Trade tents had been set up. He was the sixth born in his family. His father, a former lawkeeper, expected he'd take up one of the heroic Trades. His five older sisters had already taken up the trades he most admired.

When he tried for the Ranger's trade, his sister Willow's trade, she joined him as they went to the blacksmith's tent and after that the mage queue. When the irreplaceable wand, made from the petrified heart of an Ironwolf hung limp in his hand, the mage grabbed it off him. Willow ushered him out of the tent.

Meredith his mother looked at them expectantly. 'How did it -?' Willow mimed a cutthroat action, pulling Oliver past them. 'Don't feel dejected, son', his father said. Thankfully Willow didn't wait for their father to start a rousing and unhelpful speech. He wasn't tall enough to be a lawmaker. Then the four Wormwoods came to a stop outside the Exporers' tent. Oliver began to sneeze, his eyelids became puffy. Hayfever didn't allow him to travel.

His friend London, was to become a Lamplighter. Oliver had not found his calling. He would have to come back next year. The tents were being packed up.

'Bother! I'm late,' a pale-faced man dropped a hefty wooden travelling chest that he'd been wheeling behind him. 'I was supposed to set up my stall hours ago.' He wanted an apprentice. Oliver thought he was very strange, saying he was small and would be less of a target. The man handed him a book. Oliver read the title. Then he asked where he would put the book in a library. Then handed him other books read, and a scroll to read. Oliver read the titles, and, in different languages. The Librarian introduced himself. My name is Hieronymus Finch-Thackeray, and I think you are splendidly suited to be the 113th assistant librarian. The next day would be his first day on the job.

The next day Oliver presented himself at the Library. It began with his employer keeling over dead before he'd finished a sentence. Oliver knew nothing about his job and found he had a lot to learn quickly or he'd be dead by the end of the day.

I loved this book and will keep it to reread often.

This was cute! I love libraries, cats and my son’s name is Oliver so it was right up my alley. I actually cannot wait for my Oliver to be old enough to read this himself as I think he would love this fast paced fantasy tale! So many twists and turns and surprises around every corner. Or should I say bookshelf?

A wonderful murder mystery about a young misfit who finds his home as the 113th Assistant Librarian, but the library is also quite character as you quickly learn! From book worm eating bats to cleverly returned books, there are many things to watch for! Easily recommended for folks who enjoyed books like Nevermore or The Keys of the Kingdom series!

A cute little middle grade fantasy from a local Aussie talent about the power of books. Felt like it could have done with a little bit more world building and the ending was a little rushed for me but a lot of fun nevertheless.

sooooo cuteeeee

honestly a great middle grade magical story, and i feel like you can find enjoyment in it no matter what age you are. its so silly, but such a fun time.

our main character oliver is actually a tolerable main character that i think is relatable. he really got thrown into the deep end of a job he didnt even really want, and forced to fend for himself.

agatha was a fun little know it all, with an air of mystery surrounding her throughout the story which kept it entertaining (tbh the twist that she is the cats living in the library got me - that thought didnt even cross my mind).

oliver's relationship with his sisters (five older sisters who have the top 5 careers) and father was a good addition since there are so many people that deal with that indirect comparison and pressure to meet expectations, even if thats not what you desire. the way it wrapped up at the end was quite wholesome, and i was happy oliver got to get the recognition he deserved. mans suffered being swallowed, frozen, and hunted by books and bats day and night in a library he got forced to live at. he deserves the credit. and not to mention the BOOKWORMS pls

there is a strange plotline with the royal vampires (?), and genuinely there are some interesting themes in here if you wanted to deep parts of the book (censorship, friendship, public opinion and reputation, growing up and expectations etc). i enjoyed this plot, but at the end of the day its a middle grade book and i am not middle grade - i will take the story for what it is

overall, its a fun quick read that i think kids of ages 8+ would enjoy (starting age 8 if youre a strong reader, 10 if youre average). im 22 and heaps of fun, and i think theres something in here that anyone would enjoy.

I am a fantasy lover and a librarian so when I saw the title of The 113th Assistant Librarian, I just knew I had to get a hold of it. Thanks to #netgalley, I was able to read an advance copy of this book which will be published October 29th.

13-year old Oliver lives in the town of Blackmoor-upon-Wyvern and on the day of the Calling, while trying to follow in the footsteps of his older siblings, Oliver ends up failing to secure an apprenticeship to any of the trades that would make his Father proud. As Oliver contemplates waiting another year until the next Calling day, the local Librarian shows up and, seeing something in Oliver that he, himself can’t see, chooses him to be his Assistant Librarian.

Without giving away any spoilers, Oliver learns the true power of books and knowledge, how to fight off hordes of monstrous creatures, why there are so many cats…?…and how to make his family proud.

There’s magic and mayhem and so much intelligent humour in this book. From the fantastic name of the town (Blackmoor-upon-Wyvern) to the vicious book-eating bookworms to the mysteriously movable “PLEASE LEAVE YOUR FIREDRAKE OUTSIDE!” sign, I found myself chuckling throughout.

Not only is there adventure and a mystery to solve but also an exploration of feelings and family relationships. There is something for everybody in this book.

I enjoyed this book greatly and highly recommend it for ages 9-99 😁

My favourite quotes:

“Words can teach the truth as easily as they can spin a lie.”

“Get away from him you malodorous monstrosity!”

It's always been a dream of mine to work in a library, though I don't think I would have liked to find myself alone, without a rulebook or mentor (they dropped dead from a suspected heart attack), on my very first day; in a library where the patrons don't listen, the books quite literally come to life, and now there's a murderer on the loose in town. Good thing I'm not Oliver Wormwood! At least he has cats for company, and some mysterious friends...

What a fun start to what I believe will be a new middle grade series! A fantastic combination of mystery, humour, fun banter, wit, emotion, and personal growth. A definite must read for all the young (and old!) library lovers out there! Recommended for fans of Nevermore, The Hotel Witch, and Greenglass House!

Thank you to NetGalley, the author and publisher for providing me access to an arc copy in exchange for an honest review. All feelings and statements are my own.

This was such a fun, satisfying read. Fast-paced from start to finish, but still managed to deftly touch on deeper topics like book banning, censorship, discrimination, police corruption, and the power of knowledge. The accuracy that Stuart writes about working in a library is unreal. 5 stars, will def be chasing up the next book.

Stuart Wilson absolutely hates his main character, Oliver Wormwood. That is the only possible explanation for what he puts this poor kid through :D All kidding aside, this book was a delightful romp. Definitely leans YA, but there is definitely some deaths strewn through this otherwise trigger-free little novel. Oliver isn't like his sisters - not as strong as a blacksmith, nor brave as a lawman, nor adept as a magician (his older sisters' jobs), but it's time for the Calling where young people are chosen to be apprentices to a tradesman (a gender neutral term) and nobody is impressed with Oliver. Finally, as a desperate last chance, Oliver agrees to be an apprentice to a librarian. Oliver loves books, what could be better? That's before Oliver finds out that many of the books in the library have minds (and appetites) of their own. After the shortest training in history, Oliver ends up being in charge of the library all by himself. Carnivorous bookworms, fire breathing drakes (do not mix well with paperbacks), and cranky politicians... and that's just day one. If you have a young reader in your life (or a bit of a young reader in your soul), you'll love this book.

‘Oliver Wormwood is sure his new job in the library will be boring. Until he learns that books hold great power – and danger.
By the end of his first day, Oliver has witnessed a death, been frozen by a book, met a perplexing number of cats, and fought off a horde of terrifying creatures.
With only a mysterious girl called Agatha to show him the ropes, Oliver needs to learn fast . . . if he wants to live longer than the 112 assistant librarians before him.’
This book was magical.
This was a random buy for me. I saw it on the counter of my local bookshop and it had a library and flying books on the cover so I purchased it not knowing anything about it. Thankfully, judging this book by its cover was an excellent choice.
I will admit that it took me a few chapters to become fully immersed in the story but once I did I was hooked. I loved the way in which readers got to learn about the weird and wacky element of the Library as Oliver does as this means there were very few information dumps which made the story flow at a much faster pace than I had expected.
The cast of characters was both entertaining and intriguing and getting to see them grow both individually and as a cast made for some really wonderful moments. I also loved that we got to see real human emotions from the characters; and a wide variety as well. This kept the story grounded even in the more magical and outlandish situations.
Stuart Wilson has done a fabulous job with this book. The story was great, the pacing was perfect and the writing had a real cinematic quality to it. I am so glad that I picked this book up and I am overjoyed that this is just the first book in a new series.
The 113th Assistant Librarian by Stuart Wilson will take you on a whimsical journey that you won’t forget.

“Don’t get me wrong, magical books do exist outside of the library and they are dangerous.. but having so many books in close proximity to one another amplifies their effects. The ideas bounce back and forth until the accumulated power of their stories ignites…”

Such a fun, cozy, adventurous MG fantasy set in a library of wonder which I loved from page one to the very end.. incredibly paced, fun loving with an added mystery that keeps you guessing. An experience like no other, I have a new found respect for libraries ;)

“An educated mind is a delicious mind..”

Oliver is a great character, I really enjoyed following his adventure and watching him grow into his unexpected apprenticeship while making his peace with the expectations of his family. Agatha was an interesting character, she reminded me so much of Gunther from friends who only made appearances here and there but knew everything and is remembered so well.

The mystery: indeed dark, some themes heavy I thought may be stretching it for a MG but it’s handled so well.

With special thanks to Penguin Books Australia for sending a review copy of this book. Thoroughly enjoyed!

This was a really cute and funny story about finding one’s place in the world where you least expect it.

A boy is tapped to become the one-hundred and thirteenth assistant librarian (the former 112 having died under mysterious circumstances). When his mentor dies on his first day at the library, he is forced to figure out how to do his new job by himself.

Witty and humorous with important themes about the value of knowledge, the awfulness of banning books, and of asking for help when you need it. A great read-in-a-day story not to be missed for readers of any age.

I like a book that lets you know what you are in for from the get go. The opening three sentences of this book immediately show us what type of world we are inhabiting:

"balefire lamps... Wizard's Way... cobblestones... horse-drawn carts...Spellwater Fountain... breeches...firedrake" etc.

We then embark on the trope of a young adolescent about to be allocated the trade that determines the rest of his life, very much like Magician, Ranger's Apprentice, Divergent and countless others.

As is often the case, Oliver is unsuitable and unwanted by all the trades, until he happens across a weird old man who discovers Oliver's gifts for words and language. Thus, Oliver becomes the 113th Assistant Librarian. Oliver is less than excited by this role, imagining he will be "dusting bookshelves... exercising his knowledge of the alphabet... and chasing down overdue books". He is also intensely aware of the expectations of his father, who Oliver has always wanted to impress. Little does Oliver know that libraries contain more power than he can imagine! He is quickly drawn in to a series of mysteries, all while he is struggling to understand his role as Assistant Librarian.

This was a fun fantasy romp, with characters I wanted to spend time with, and mysteries that were genuinely head-scratching. I do feel the story could have done with a larger overall plot - some bigger issues to be resolved. These were hinted at and may rear their head in the intended sequel, but it did leave a little taste of dissatisfaction in my mouth.

Overall, a great read and a promising start to what I hope will be a series I can recommend to my students for years to come.

A wonderful fantasy that focuses on the plot rather than serious world building - making for light and entertaining read - though with some dark, dangerous and lethal moments to survive.

After failing all the apprentice tests undertaken when you turn 13, Oliver is taken on by the librarian at the last minute and at the end of the day. Unfortunately, the librarian dies whilst starting to list the dangers and things 'not to do' and by the end of his first day Oliver has witnessed this death, been frozen by a book, and met a perplexing number of cats. However, unsought assistance id provided by the mysterious girl., Agatha, who inexplicably appears amongst the shelves.

This book is great fun as Oliver tumbles from one disaster to the next with the help and hindrance of cats, Agatha and his older sisters who pop in an out in their various fantasy functions from law bearer to magician. Oliver is on a deadline as he needs to learn fast to survive the various attacks on the library and its patrons.

For those who know libraries and how they operate - enjoy the ride! Tgere is scope for furhter adventures with Oliver and I do hope they come.

Thank you to the publisher for providing an ARC.

I loved this! Definitely one of the best middle grade novels to come out of 2024. I'll try not to give any spoilers...

A fantasy with an historical air about it, this mystery (heads up - there is some death and murder) revolves around the power of books, reading, and libraries. I loved how the mystery was resolved and the twist that made me gasp in a way that made the people in the room with me at the time go, "What? What!?!" (I said they'd have to read it).

I really liked the characterisation of Oliver's family and Oliver's own growth.

There's an interesting little bit of side-plot about politics, political optics, public opinion, and censorship... I look forward to seeing if this is picked up again in future books.

Too bad it isn't out just a little bit sooner, because it would have been a PERFECT read for this year's Australian Book Week theme, 'Reading is Magic'.

HIGHLY recommended for a grade 4/5/6 class read aloud!

Thirteen year old Oliver Wormwood has survived his first day as Assistant Librarian.

Just.

He is, in fact, the 113th Assistant Librarian - because the 112 before him haven’t survived long enough to make any sort of impact!

When he finds himself in the unenviable position of having to be the Actual Librarian he discovers that it is far more dangerous than you might imagine.

Oliver has to learn quickly - but the only help seems to come in the form of a mysterious number of cats, a strange girl called Agatha and his frustratingly unpredictable older sisters.

And then when three murders take place within days of each other, Oliver funds himself trying to solve a mystery as well.

This story is so much fun. Well-written, action-packed and full of humour, it is definitely one which should go to the top of any To Be Read pile. (And, I think it would make a fabulous readaloud too.)

113 Assistant librarian:

this book follows the tale of Oliver something something (I forgot his last name it’s been a while since I finished) after all the trades are either closed or rejected him he gets offered a trade by a librarian. after all the other trades are closed he is forced to take it, and discovers that books are pOWerFuL!

I liked the book, it was a very easy read and felt the book ended pretty quickly. just felt like the big catch wasn’t that big of a deal/ threat. this book perfectly sets up more in the series.

Rating:
2x ⭐️ - themed in a library
2x ⭐️ - cool premise and build up for next book
-1⭐️ - felt a bit boring and the big threat wasn’t great.

————————————
3 ⭐️ it was a fun read and will read the next book!

I'm actually a little disappointed my job as a bookseller doesn't include the Night at the Museum esque shenanigans that poor Oliver deals with in this book

Very fun, genuinely hilarious, and with excellently characterised individuals, this was exactly what I needed to lift my spirits - catch me recommending this to every slightly bookishly inclined child and all of my coworkers. A great story on finding your own way in the world, and dealing with familial expectations (alongside the shenanigans)

Cats, accidental arson, potential vampires, on page deaths, and magic - what else can you ask from a middle grade?
