Rate this book
When her true love is abducted by mysterious creatures, a girl must summon the strength to save him

From the moment they met as young children, Bee and George have been bound together by a deep love. But when George goes off on a quest to a forbidden lake, home to dangerous water nymphs, it is up to Bee to rescue him. On her adventure she meets Loc, the king of the dwarfs, who proves to be more kind and generous than the humans she knows. Even as he showers her with riches in an attempt to make her stay, Bee never loses sight of her finding George. She will do anything to get him back.

French critic Anatole France, pen name of Jacques Anatole François Thibault wrote sophisticated, often satirical short stories and novels, including Penguin Island (1908), and won the Nobel Prize of 1921 for literature.

Anatole France began his career as a poet and a journalist. From 1867, he as a journalist composed articles and notices.

In 1869, Le Parnasse Contemporain published La Part de Madeleine of his poems. In 1875, he sat on the committee in charge of the third such compilation. He moved Paul Verlaine and Stéphane Mallarmé aside.

Skeptical old scholar Sylvester Bonnard, protagonist of famous Le Crime de Sylvestre Bonnard (1881), embodied own personality of the author. The academy praised its elegant prose.

Anatole France in La Rotisserie de la Reine Pedauque (1893) ridiculed belief in the occult and in Les Opinions de Jerome Coignard (1893) captured the atmosphere of the fin de siècle.

People elected him to the Académie française in 1896.
People falsely convicted Alfred Dreyfus, a Jewish army officer, of espionage. Anatole France took an important part in the affair, signed manifesto of Émile Zola to support Dreyfus, and authored Monsieur Bergeret in 1901.

After the nearsighted Abbot Mael baptized the animals in error, France in later work depicts the transformation into human nature in 1908.

People considered most profound La Revolte des Anges (1914). It tells of Arcade, the guardian angel of Maurice d'Esparvieu. Arcade falls in love, joins the revolutionary movement of angels, and towards the end recognizes the meaningless overthrow of God unless "in ourselves and in ourselves alone we attack and destroy Ialdabaoth."

People awarded him "in recognition of his brilliant literary achievements, characterized as they are by a nobility of style, a profound human sympathy, grace, and a true Gallic temperament" in 1921.

In 1922, the Catholic Church put entire works of France on the Index Librorum Prohibitorum (Index of Prohibited Books).

He died, and people buried his body in the Neuilly-sur-Seine community cemetery near Paris.

Bee and George are two children who were brought up like brother and sister, even though they knew they are not. And it’s clear they start to have feelings for each other. Bee then takes George on a little adventure, to a forbidden lake where Bee is unfortunately abducted and taken underground. The king of the dwarves falls in love with Bee and keeps her prisoner, hoping that she will one day consent to becoming his wife. Time passes but as the two children grow older, they still can’t stop thinking about each other.

On one hand, a really sweet and rather straight forward little fantasy fairy tale and an innocent young love story. On the other hand, it’s also got a subtle but rather powerful moral lesson about social injustice. The rich and entitled children are basically taught that they really should not look down on those they consider below them, the people who actually work for a living. Now, doesn’t that seem like a lesson that is still a bit relevant to this day?

This book is one of my mother's favorite when she was a child and had been given to her by her own mother.

My mother decided to read it to me to make me discover a really beautiful treasure of the French literature.

"Abeille" is a very sweet fairy tale, written for children but very enjoyable for grown-up too as long as they kept a children soul.

Abeille and Georges are two children who had been raised as brother and sister(knowing they weren't) but who loved each other dearly since the first time they met.

Once, while they were walking to a forbidden lake, they disappeared from the face of the earth for 7 long years.

Abeille is kept captive by the merry dwarfs while Georges is raised by the wonderful undines.

Don't hesitate to read this beautiful story if you can 'cause you will have a very pleasant time doing so. And most of all, share this book with children, I'm sure they will appreciate this journey with you.

След Джеймс Джойс и Мери Шели, сега идва ред на френския нобелов лауреат Жaк Aнaтoл Фрaнcoa Tибo, подписал своята „Пчелица” с псевдонима Анатол Франс. Прочетете ревюто на "Книжни Криле":

An absolutely stunning fairy tale with imagery as memorable, emotion as moving and language as lovely and poetic as Hans Christian Anderson's The Little Mermaid. To miss this adventure would be a true shame.

“I must beg very serious persons not to read this. It is not written for them. It is not written for grave people [but] those who like to be entertained, and whose minds are both young and gay. Only those who are amused by innocent pleasures will read this to the end... I wish this story to please both boys and girls and yet I hardly dare to hope it will. It is too frivolous for them and, really, only suitable for old-fashioned children.”

Well, perhaps I am not as old-fashioned as I think I am. This is the story of George and Honey-Bee, two children who, although not actually siblings, are raised as such in the castle of the land. Of course, they are the most beautiful children and all who see them are stunned senseless by their beauty. They go to see the sights of the kingdom and get lost - Bee is taken in (captive) by the dwarves and George by the nixies (also captive). It was okay.

This is a sweet little tale of morality written in the early part of the 20th century by a French writer who takes obvious umbridge at how we teach our children the ways of greed over the ways of love. This is a refection of his social justice, best described by his Nobel biography, which I choose to quote below:

"Anatole France, pseudonym for Jacques Anatole Thibault (1844-1924), was the son of a Paris book dealer. He received a thorough classical education at the Collège Stanislas, a boys' school in Paris, and for a while he studied at the École des Chartes. For about twenty years he held diverse positions, but he always had enough time for his own writings, especially during his period as assistant librarian at the Senate from 1876 to 1890. His literary output is vast, and though he is chiefly known as a novelist and storyteller, there is hardly a literary genre that he did not touch upon at one time or another. France is a writer in the mainstream of French classicism. His style, modelled on Voltaire and Fénélon, as well as his urbane scepticism and enlightened hedonism, continue the tradition of the French eighteenth century. This outlook on life, which appears in all his works, is explicitly expressed in collection of aphorisms, Le Jardin d'Épicure (1895) [The Garden of Epicurus].

"France had written several stories and novels before he achieved his first great success with Le Crime de Sylvestre Bonnard (1881). The novel received a prize from the Académie Française, of which France became a member in 1896.

"In 1885 he published Le Livre de mon ami [My Friend's Book], a kind of autobiographical novel, which he continued with Pierre Nozière (1899), Le Petit Pierre (1918), and La Vie au fleur (1922) [The Bloom of Life]. From 1888 to 1892 France was the literary critic of the newspaper Le Temps. His reviews, inspired by the scepticism of Renan, but highly subjective, were collected in four volumes under the title La Vie littéraire (1888-92) [On Life and Letters]. About this time France turned sharply against the naturalism of Zola. His own work of this period consists of historical fiction that evokes past civilizations with great charm and deep insight. The period of transition from paganism to Christianity was one of his favourites. In 1889 appeared Balthazar, a fanciful version of the story of one of the Magi, and in 1890 Thaïs, the story of the conversion of an Alexandrian courtesan during the Christian era. L'Étui de nacre (1892) [Mother of Pearl] is the story of a hermit and a faun, an ironic conjunction typical of France's art.

"In 1893 France published his most celebrated novel, La Rôtisserie de la Reine Pédauque [At the Sign of the Reine Pédauque], a vast tableau of life in eighteenth century France. The central figure of the novel, the Abbé Coignard, a complex, ironical, and lovable character, reappears in Les Opinions de Jérôme Coignard (1893) and the collection of stories Le Puits de Sainte Claire (1895) [The Well of Saint Claire]. With the tragic love story, Le Lys rouge (1894) [The Red Lily], France returned to a contemporary subject and in the following years wrote Histoire contemporaine (1896-1901), a group of prose works, not really novels, that have their unity in the character of Professor Bergeret, one of France's most famous creations.

"In his later years France became increasingly interested in social questions. He protested the verdict in the Dreyfus case and developed some sympathies for socialism. Among his last important works were a biography of Joan of Arc (1908), Les Dieux ont soif (1912) [The Gods are Athirst], and La Révolte des anges (1914) [The Revolt of the Angels]. The collected works of Anatole France were published in twenty-five volumes between 1925 and 1935."

From Nobel Lectures, Literature 1901-1967, Editor Horst Frenz, Elsevier Publishing Company, Amsterdam, 1969"

I think, in some ways, this is why I felt this book in my heart as well as my head. Thank you OpenRoad Media for republishing this little book

This was an unexpected gem. As with all fairy tales there are elements of convenience but the love story is not the main component of the book. Honey-Bee and George grow up together and one fateful night (there's always a fateful night) walk out to the lake where George is taken prisoner by the beautiful Nixies of the lake and Honey-Bee is rescued/ taken prisoner by the Dwarves. Up to this point we have been given hints of what fearful creatures both the Nixies and the Dwarves are. Most of the tale centres on Honey-Bee's subsequent life with the Dwarves. It is a fairytale with some beautiful writing and a delight to read, even as an adult happening on it for the first time. The Queen of the Nixies wants to keep George as her husband and King Loc of the Dwarves wants Honey-Bee for his wife. The resolution of the story and King Loc's speech brought me to tears. "We love truly only those we love even in their weakness and their poverty. To forbear, to forgive, to console, that alone is the science of love."

This was a book that I chose to read to my children as a bedtime story. I would highly suggest reading it to your kids once they are old enough to both start reading themselves (and reading chapter books). The story itself is fairly simple and much in line with any other fairy-tale style story one might read. However, the wording is longer and much more like other writings from the late 19th century to early 20th century authors. The chapters are short (5-10 minutes each when reading aloud), and reading one chapter a night allows the children time to ask questions about heavier words they are unfamiliar with. There are plenty of those, so be prepared for blank stares at times or the glazed-over eye look you get when they don't have a clue what you're talking about.

I'm amazed how many fairy tales/folk tales/wonder stories there are in this world.

First of all, the description of this book gives the wrong impression. Bee: The Princess of the Dwarves is the tale of two children. They grow up together as brother and sister. One day, they sneak away from their guards/nannies/whatever you want to call them. George is abducted by some water sprites, while Bee is "rescued"/abducted by the Dwarves. The story mainly focuses on Bee, but also circles back to George. Even without seeing each other for 6-7 years, they develop this unrivaled desire/passion/love for the other. Considering they grew up as siblings, it's a bit bizare. Plus, the passion seems to come out of nowhere.

I did find the story original and cute. It's a fast read. The style reminded me of The Princess and the Goblin and The Princess and Curdie by George Macdonald.

A marvelous fairy tale by Anatole France. This is totally different than anything else I've read by him but is just as good as any of his other books. This follows Honey-Bee who as a child was captured by Dwarfs when on an outing with her friend young George, the one she loves. Although held captive by the dwarfs for seven years she is treated like a princess and has captured the heart of King Loc, ruler of the dwarfs. France's tale is wonderfully told with suspense and humor in his spectacular prose.

Absolutely charming and humorous. It's an adorable fairy tale with charming wit and banter as well as characters. Of course I would prefer a stronger female character, who to me, is not really the true hero of this story, but despite her shortcomings it was still a delight to read. Also, this is a good translation though the Kindle version has some typos.

An enjoyable tale

Short and sweet. Sometimes you want a familiar story minus the violence and horrifically long journeys. This would be a good starter story to introduce youngsters to the underworld of Tolkien, which was required reading in my day. I did enjoy it.

✧⋆˚₊˚⋆✧Excerpts of note:
🔺Having placed on her golden hair a little black hood embroidered with pearls and bound about her waist a widow's girdle, the Countess of Blanchelande entered the chapel where it was her daily custom to pray for the soul of her husband who had been killed in single-handed combat with a giant from Ireland. That day she saw a white rose lying on the cushion of her prie-Dieu; at sight of this she turned pale; her eyes grew dim; she bowed her head and wrung her hand.

🔻. . . third night, it being Christmas, this same dwarf returned to the chamber where I slept. He was accompanied by innumerable others, who pulled me out of bed and carried me to an unknown land in my nightgown. 'Such,' they said as they left me, . . .

🔺Wherein begins the love of George of Blanchelande and Honey- Bee of Claride Contrary to the common destiny which is to have more goodness than beauty, or more beauty than goodness, the Duchess of Clarides was as good as she was beautiful, and she was so beautiful that many princes, though they had only seen her portrait, demanded her hand in marriage.

A French Fairy Tale

I liked this tale of two children that are to a woman with the instructions to raise and love them equally. So starts the tale which involves dwarf and mermaid kingdoms, true love and challenges to overcome for such a love. The stuff fairy tales are made. If you don't understand French you might not appreciate the songs and verses that are in French in the story. Fortunately I took a semester of French in college. I found story engaging enough it held my interest in what would happen next. I hope Bee and George will be held in same regard as other fairy tales better well known such as Snow White which has a few similar elements her story.
