Rate this book

BURNED was one of those books that just felt right up my alley. This Scandi crime read is fast-paced, with an awesome protagonist. Henning Juul is a journalist who's just returning to work after a long break, following the tragic death of his young son. Henning is a great blend of hard-nosed journalist, troubled man, and tender heart. He's the kind of character you just want to take out for a drink and ask him about his problems!

I read this book in basically 2 sittings - it's totally approachable and a fast read. My only issue with it: the translation seemed clunky, with words occasionally missing or misused. Hardly the fault of the author, though - I'll definitely be reading more in this series.

A solid 3.5 of a series opener.

A new Nordic author has come my way -- Norwegian writer Thomas Enger, who also has a new series to watch out for. Even if I didn't know that there are already more in the works, the end of Burned literally paves the way for a sequel. Hopefully the new entries will be translated and made available to readers as soon as possible, because if this first foray is any indication, the series is going to be a good one.

A young woman is found half buried and stoned to death in a tent with one of her hands cut off. It is not long until the police suspect that the details of her death relate to an "honor killing," a draconian form of punishment under Sharia law, implying a connection to Islam. It just so happens that her boyfriend is a Muslim, and it doesn't help that the a) young woman has left two messages for him about another man meaning nothing, asking for forgiveness and b) he is found trying to destroy his computer when the police come to question him. The boyfriend is quickly arrested. The murder coincides with the return of Henning Juul, an investigative journalist for the online news site, 1-2-3 News, "as easy as 1-2-3!" Juul has been away for two years as a result of a tragedy that left him physically scarred on the outside and emotionally scarred within. He's not too excited about returning to work after what's happened, but his feelings begin to change as he becomes involved in covering the case. Sent to cover the press conference on his first day back, Juul hears what the police have to say, and isn't quite sure they've got it right. After he goes to visit the university where the young girl was a student, he is even more convinced that there's much more to this story than meets the eye. Helped by an informant from the police whose identity he does not know, as they converse only via instant messaging, Juul sets out to discover the truth, and as he does so, he puts his own life in danger.

There are several reasons to like this novel. First, there's Juul himself, who makes his way back into the world of journalism only to find that it's become more dependent on titillation, sensationalism and celebrities rather than on old-fashioned reporting, and that now it's the sex and gossip columnist that is the "paper's most important news desk", and that the number of website hits is what really determines success. It's interesting to watch Juul slowly changing as the thrill of chasing after the truth starts to help him back to his feet emotionally, but he also carries around a lot of baggage. There's his mother, lost in an alcohol and cigarette haze; his estranged sister, who just happens to be a minister of justice, and his ex-wife, who is now involved with one of Juul's colleagues; all of this on top of dealing with past tragedy, or "That Which He Doesn't Think About," which is unfolded as the novel progresses. The plotting is tight and very well paced, and there's a good, solid mystery at the core. But there's something else as well -- although the plot involves elements of Islam, it never devolves into anything stereotypical or demeaning.

On the other side of the fence, I got really tired of the character of Inspector Bjarne Brogeland, a schoolmate of Juul's, and a "Romeo whose ambition was to sleep with as many girls as posssible." He might be a decent cop, but the continuing sleazebaggy, interior monologues about another female officer that run throughout the story got really old after a while. The first of these was just an eyebrow raiser, as in "this guy's such a jerk", but became tedious very quickly. I can only hope that in the next novel the author either develops this bit or shelves it all together. It's pointless, really, adding nothing to the story but contempt for a cop. While a great many of the characters are flawed, as credible characters most often are, Brogeland was just a bit too much to take. And as another issue, I sort of figured out the who before anyone else in the story did -- to me it was a bit obvious.

Overall, Burned is intelligent, believable (down to Juul's obsessions with matches and batteries), and at times humorous, while remaining somewhat understated in tone. These same traits also mirror those of the main character. I like the fact that Henning Juul is not just another detective or another cop, but a journalist, who is much better than the police at putting people at ease while he's getting valuable information out of them. I'd definitely recommend this one to readers of Scandinavian crime fiction.

Henriette Hagerup a twenty three year old student from Oslo killed at Ekeburg common, the same place where she was working on her film. The way of killing, was strange like flogging, stoning to death and chopping hand isn't a common way of murder, is this murder has something to do with her controvertial film history? The police had got their prime suspect Mahmoud Marhoni victim's boyfriend and his suspicious act is igniting the fire. Was she unfaithful to her boyfriend that lead to the murder? Suggestion that the murder is something to do with the Sharia law or Hududand the murderer is somehow mimicking her script.

Henning Juul a crime reporter from 123news is back at business after a terrible incident happen two year back. Now he don't consider this case as simple as it's look, and after he digs more and more he is convinced enough that there is some deep conspiracy behind this murder.

A perfect crime thriller, didn't start with a huge expectation, And not a Highly rated book of Nordic noir.In the begining the story started as a ordinary murder mystery but the ended with a high note.Overall a highly recommeneded thriller especially reader like me who love to read scandanavian thriller. and probably the best part of this book was proabably the finishing which is becoming quiet rare now.

Rating : 4.75/5.

"Burned" is the first book in the Henning Juul crime series. In this novel, Henning Juul returns to work as an investigative reporter two years after a tragic fire and death of his son. Henning's first assignment is the stoning death of a college student. This is a great piece of Scandinavian crime fiction. The crime story is unique and very interesting. I thought the pace was good. The translation seemed a bit awkward at times, but it did not detract from the story. Henning Juul is a great character and I am very much looking forward to reading the next installments in the series.

What I’m about to say is something I never thought I’d ever say ...*dramatic pause to build suspense*... I’m so thankful I did not start this series at book 1! I started the Henning Juul series at book 4, by the time I realised it was part of a series, I didn’t have enough time to read books 1-3 (before my review commitment date).

There were some editing errors in the kindle edition I read, which was a big put off as I purchased it from Amazon. I didn’t find the mystery that interesting, Henning (who I loved in book 4) was too whiny for my liking, pining after his ex-wife and there was this sleezeball cop who keep leering after his colleague which was so unnecessary. Needless to say, it didn’t work for me.

However, I’m going to read book 2, Pierced, because I need to know the full backstory to maximise my enjoyment of book 5.

I struggled with this one a tad bit in the middle. It slowed down & almost lost me. The translation is a lil rough & sometimes was hacked up with words & phrasing. It picked up at the end tho & left me wanting to read more in the series.

Burned, the first part of Thomas Enger's Henning Juul series is being compared (a lot) to Steig Larsson and his Millenium trilogy. Both are set in Scandinavian countries, written by Scandinavian authors, and both are crime books with journalists as the main characters.

That being said, it is completely unfair to both Larsson and Enger to compare the two. While Larsson writes massive, complex, even epic stories that cover corruption on all levels of the government, covering multiple types of psychological deviations, Enger wrote a story that is much more contained, the scope is much smaller, and the motivations are pretty straightforward. It is ruthless to compare the two because what follows is a disappointment in Enger's book - a book that is really fun, tense, dynamic, and interesting, and really does not need comparisons like this to reach its audience.

I read this book within two sittings, it's a real page-turner, and it's a good crime book, with a great story, interesting characters, and a lot of mystery. It's not perfect, the pacing is a bit off (it really slows down around the middle), and this was one of the few books that would actually prosper if it was told from a first-person view (I do not say that lightly). But, I really enjoyed it and I can't wait to continue the series. I have a feeling it can only get better.

A great read if you like the genre and if you need something fast and fun.

Tražite krimić idealan za ove dane? Evo jednoga!

****************

Young woman is murdered on a brutal way - stoning to death.
Her muslim boyfriend automatically ends up in jail.
Reporter Henninh Juul finds holes in that story, starts investigating and puts himselfin great danger.

Another great scandinavian read, very tense, keeps you reading and reading. Despite many exciting twists, it is very easy to follow the story (and remember the names) and shorter chapters makes all smooth and dynamic.

I really enjoyed that one and I'm looking forward to next Henning Juul's adventures!

From the very beginning I related to and liked the main character Juul Henning, his back story was a horrible tragedy in his near past. He works for an investigative online newspaper, which was expremely interesting as well. The story line follows him around Norway and we learn of his personal life and that which haunts him. Well written, easy to follow as he investigates a crime to its conclusion among many twists and turns and incorrect assumptions.

The 1st book in the Henning Juul series by Thomas Enger.
Two years after he lost his son in a fire, crime journalist Henning Juul starts working again. Emotionally speaking, he's shot down, but he tries to pick up the pieces of his life. However, to do so, he must get to the bottom of what really happened when his son died.
An excellent 1st book in the series, I intend to read more.

This was a story I could sink my teeth into from beginning to end. Plenty of description to visualize the scenes and understand the characters, but not too much that gets in the way of plot flow and suspense. I'll definitely be reading more books in this series.

Zanimljiv, napet i uzbudljiv skandinavski triler autora kojega nerijetko nazivaju 'novim Nesboom'.

Henning is a investigative journalist who has just come back to work after a horrible tragedy. Two years prior, he and his young son were in a apartment fire where he was badly maimed and his beloved son perished.
After 2 years, he still has demons. He is obsessed with smoke detectors, autmatically checking for them in every building he enters and changes his apartment smoke detectors batteries daily and calls matches "the devil's soldiers".
Things are drastically different in his 2 year absence - his former trainee is now his boss. His ex-wife is romantically involved with his co-worker.
Yet, he still has it when it comes to investigative journalism. He has a knack of getting people to open up and a detective-like tenacity to put things together. With his skill set and determination he sets out to help solve the brutal murder of a young lady.
Set in Norway.

I really enjoyed this one! It’s a little bit different from the other Scandi Noir books that I’ve read probably mainly in that the main character is a journalist as opposed to a person from the police force. We are introduced to Henning Juul who I actually immediately had a sense of sympathy for which turned to empathy as I came to know him. Henning has been through unspeakable tragedy with the death of his son Jonas in a house fire in circumstances that are unthinkable as a parent. I think the father in me resonated with him big time and I found myself actually wanting to be his mate.

The book is a fairly easy and steady read. It’s a page turner without being a page turner but I really loved that. The plot isn’t difficult to follow but at the same time is complex. I like that contrast as I’m reading. I also like that while the crime is solved it’s not resolved either. Thomas Enger has really been able to navigate these paradoxical type threads which I really enjoyed.

Looking forward to reading the next one.

This was a great first novel. It kept you always thinking of all the possibilities. He had several red herrings in the story which made it interesting. I only wish I had started this book sooner. It was in my pile of books to read but never near the top. I'll read Thomas Enger right away next time I see him.
