Saved by the Mountain Man: A Grumpy Enemies to Lovers Firefighter Romance

Rate this book
She saves lives in the ER. He'll risk everything to save hers—whether she wants him to or not.

Dr. Penelope Stark came to the Oregon mountains for three months of peace. After brutal years in the ER watching the pandemic claim too many lives, she's burned out, hollow, and desperately needs to remember why she became a doctor. Solo hiking is her therapy, her reset button, her way back to herself.

Too bad the local Search & Rescue team leader thinks she's reckless.

Zackery Pace has spent fifteen years with one save people from the mountains that took his younger sister. As SAR team leader and volunteer firefighter, he's made it his life's work to rescue careless hikers—especially stubborn women who hike alone and think they're invincible. When the gorgeous, petite doctor ignores every warning and heads into the backcountry solo, his protective instincts kick into overdrive.

Their first meeting? He's rescuing an injured hiker she's already treating. His second opinion on her "reckless behavior"? Not appreciated.

But when a massive wildfire forces evacuations and they're assigned to rescue trapped campers together, antagonism ignites into something hotter than the flames surrounding them. On a multi-day trek through dangerous terrain, walls crumble. She sees the grief-stricken brother behind the hero complex. He sees the competent, skilled woman he misjudged as careless.

Back in town, their chemistry is undeniable. But Zackery can't let go of control—tracking her location, demanding she check in, forbidding her to hike alone. And Penelope refuses to be suffocated by someone else's fear, no matter how well-intentioned.

When she plans a solo summit to prove her independence and a storm traps her on the mountain, Zackery faces his worst history repeating. The woman he loves is in danger, and this time, he has to trust that she's capable enough to survive until he reaches her.

Can a man who's built his life around control learn that love means letting go? And can a fiercely independent woman let someone in without losing herself?

Aspen Wade writes steamy small-town and mountain men romances where the air is crisp, the men are gruff (until they’re not), and love burns slow but hits hard. Her stories are full of wilderness charm—crackling campfires, snow-dusted cabins, and heroes who’d rather fix a roof than text back (until the right woman knocks them sideways).
Expect emotional depth, slow-burn tension, and moments that feel like a deep exhale after a long hike. Aspen’s heroines are strong, clever, and unafraid to challenge the mountains—or the men who guard them. When she’s not writing about rugged love stories and cozy cabin nights, Aspen’s dreaming of pine forests, coffee by a wood stove, and a man who smells faintly of cedar and sin.

Saved by the Mountain Man by Aspen Wade is an emotional, high-stakes mountain romance that blends danger, healing, and undeniable chemistry into a story about two strong people learning that love isn’t about control—it’s about trust. Set in the rugged wilderness of Oregon, this installment in the Timber Falls Mountain Men series delivers action, heartfelt growth, and a romance that burns just as fiercely as the wildfires surrounding them.

Dr. Penelope “Penny” Stark didn’t come to the Oregon mountains looking for love. After years working in the ER through the devastation of the pandemic, she’s exhausted, emotionally drained, and desperate to remember why she chose medicine in the first place. Hiking alone in the wilderness is her way of breathing again, a chance to reclaim some peace after witnessing too much loss.

Unfortunately, the local Search & Rescue leader thinks she’s doing it all wrong.

Zackery Pace has dedicated his life to saving people from the mountains that once took his younger sister. As the head of the SAR team and a volunteer firefighter, protecting others has become both his mission and his coping mechanism. When he spots Penny hiking solo in dangerous terrain, his instincts kick in immediately—and not gently.

Their first meeting? Tense.
Their second? Even worse.

Zack assumes Penny is another reckless hiker he needs to rescue. Penny quickly proves she’s more than capable—and not about to tolerate his overprotective attitude or his habit of mansplaining survival skills to an accomplished emergency physician.

What begins as friction quickly transforms into something far more complicated when a raging wildfire traps campers in the mountains and forces Zack and Penny to work together on a dangerous multi-day rescue mission.

Out in the wilderness, their walls start to crumble.

Zack begins to see the capable, compassionate doctor behind the stubborn independence he first dismissed. Penny sees the grief and fear that fuel Zack’s relentless need to control every situation. Their antagonistic chemistry turns electric as respect grows alongside the attraction neither of them can ignore.

What makes this story particularly compelling is the emotional depth behind their conflict. Zack’s need for control comes from loss and fear, while Penny’s fierce independence is rooted in her determination not to lose herself again. Watching them confront those fears and learn how to meet in the middle makes their relationship feel authentic and deeply satisfying.

The rescue missions, wildfire danger, and inside look at the SAR team add exciting tension to the story, but it’s the emotional journey between Penny and Zack that truly carries the book.

If you enjoy grumpy, overprotective mountain men, confident heroines who refuse to back down, enemies-to-lovers tension, and romance set against thrilling wilderness adventures, Saved by the Mountain Man is an engaging, heartfelt read that proves sometimes the strongest love stories grow in the most dangerous places.

Because sometimes the man who thinks he has to save everyone…
needs to learn that the strongest partner is the one who can stand beside him.

Power-play?

We see in two heroic, caring people a strong discomfort at feeling underestimated or fighting against the other trying to rigidly control them. Both have good intentions, both are competent in their job, but neither believes the other has a right to impose their opinions on them. Dr. Penelope Stark ("Penny") is a temporarily burned out ER doctor who needs time off to relax in the beautiful Oregon mountains over the next 3 months. She knows what she is doing and is a strong, confident woman. Hiking alone in nature is her therapy of choice to "find herself" again. Unfortunately, Zackery Pace, a Search and Rescue leader, has suffered the lost of his younger sister years ago and has become obsessed and over-compensating by relentlessly focusing on the rescue of careless hikers. With Penny being totally confident in her skills, she doesn't appreciate the hovering Zackery insists on. He sees her as careless, reckless, and not fit to be hiking alone. Her ignoring him and his commands puts both of them on edge and brings out hostility. Finding her working on an injured hiker deepens his conviction that she is behaving recklessly.

Will their being partnered together to rescue campers from a wildfire help them to understand why each acts as they do toward each other? If he doesn't know her background, can't acknowledge her skills and accept that she is indeed competent, and if he constantly feels the need to control her every move, he will end up losing her. She wants his trust and confidence in her. Can he loosen his intense fear for her safety? Can she resist insisting on her independence and instead accept occasional help fix the tension between them? Or will their own behavior keep them from accepting the other's love?

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Saved by the Mountain Man by Aspen Wade is an emotional rollercoaster in the best way—full of tension, heart, and real growth.

WOW what a story. You truly laugh, cry, and get frustrated right along with them. The emotions feel so real, especially with how both characters are carrying their own pain.

Zackery is that classic grumpy, overprotective mountain man—but his control comes from deep grief, and you feel it. His need to save everyone, especially Penelope, isn’t just about being alpha—it’s about fear of losing someone again. And Penelope? She does not let him get away with it. She’s strong, independent, and refuses to be treated like she can’t take care of herself.

Their dynamic is so good—constant tension, push and pull, and that “I know what’s best for you” vs. “I decide my own life” conflict that keeps everything intense. But underneath all of it, they see each other. He sees her strength. She sees the broken parts he tries to hide.

The action with the wildfire and rescue missions adds so much urgency, but it’s their emotional journey that really stands out. Watching Zackery learn that love isn’t about control—and Penelope learning she can let someone in without losing herself—makes their relationship feel earned.

And their friends? Such a great supporting cast that makes the whole town feel alive. They are absolutely perfect for each other, even when they’re driving each other crazy.

If you love grumpy/sunshine, enemies to lovers, emotional depth, and protective heroes who have to learn to let go, this one hits all the feels. 🔥🏔️📚.

This book has reached my heart. It's probably the most important but sweetest love story that I've read in a long time. Yes, there are sensual scenes but that's not the real storyline within the pages of this book. When you are climbing a mountain or making a decision about life-altering career moves, there is one thing that is most important and that is trust. Zachary had to learn this about his life, his job and the love of his life. Penny had to learn this about her career, her mountain climbing and having a life with Zachary. It might seem mundane when writing a review but life itself needs many things to be successful and as a person who has been married over fifty years, raised kids, worked a couple different career moves and sit here with a smile on my face, I can guarantee that trust within the pages of this book, were written just perfect. Thanks for terrific writing and a wonderful story.

I loved almost everything about this read. The only thing I didn't really like as the FMC. She was quite rude and abrasive. I know a lot of readers like ballsy FMC's but I'm not really a fan.

Zachary though WOW what a hottie.

All my favourite tropes are here:

Enemies to lovers with antagonistic chemistry
Grumpy overprotective hero meets sunshine independent heroine
Search & Rescue and wildfire action
Control issues and grief handled with emotional depth
Forced proximity during rescue mission
Competence kink (both are skilled in their fields)
Small-town Oregon mountain setting
HEA guaranteed with groveling and growth.

Zack thinks he's going to rescue an unprepared hiker, and Penny shows him and his team how it's done — I absolutely loved it! Penny is a ballbuster and her confidence is what most strive for; she's exactly the one to put the overworked and overprotective Zack in his place. The chemistry kept building as they both worked closely in the high-stakes situations where they thrive. The deeper dive into the SAR team was a huge bonus and gave great depth to the story.

I was never a big fan of the mountain men trope, but Aspen Wade has helped me fall for each of them, and I can't wait to see what's in store next!

This is Book 3 of the Timber Falls Mountain Men series. Can be read as a standalone.

'Can a man who's built his life around control learn that love means letting go? And can a fiercely independent woman let someone in without losing herself?'

The characters were very appealing and complex and complicated and perfectly steamy together. Plot was intriguing and intense and exciting and well paced. World building was solidly drawn and impressive. All in all a great addition to the series. Thoroughly enjoyed and highly recommend.

Book 3 of Timber Falls Mountain Men story of Dr. Penelope Stark and Zackery Pace. These two are like oil and water but the perfect combination of determination and protective to make this story romantic and have you wanting to kick Zack once or several times for his fears taking control. I was overwhelmed by both these characters back story and the way they both found a balance together with happiness at the end.

Zack and Penny are opposites and from the moment they meet they butt heads. Though they both fight what the whole town sees from the get go they are meant to be with one another. They have their own hurts that they are trying to heal from or ignore depending on how you look at it. Their chemistry is undeniable and loved them from the get go.

Zackary + Penelope (Penny)

Saved by the Mountain Man follows the story of two grumpy stubborn MCs who end up clashing a little bit.

Pen is on a sabbatical away from her job. She is looking for quiet and she doesn't really get it in the beginning. Zack is stubborn and is set in his ways in regards to safety but there is a reason why.

After much conversation and them being together on hikes feelings develop and this short but sweet romance hits all the marks.

Thank you to the author and Booksprout for an advance reader copy in exchange for an honest review.
