Memorable Quotes:
"Estella Grant was real. She was human. She was a woman with a sketchy past and an uncertain future" - Ellie (Chapter 24, pg. 156).
"Because of you, you and I are both alive. You saved two people, Ellie. You don't kill anyone. That's not who you are" - Estella (Chapter 26, pg. 167).
"Estella, I know you lie to me! I know your tells by now. I know that when you sound your most sincere, it's because you're pretending with everything that you've got. I know that when you talk or act dumb, it's because you're hiding how terrifyingly smart you are. I know you're two steps ahead of everyone else, that you're ten steps ahead of the police. I know that you act like everything just happened to you because you're always the one doing the driving" - Ellie (Chapter 26, pg. 169).
"Because here was the secret, the key -- finally -- to Estella Grant's character, and it was one Ellie felt deeply queasy about using now. Estella wasn't an all-powerful super villain; Estella was every bit as scared as Ellie was. She was beneath all that red lipstick, bloodshed, and power, a vulnerable human woman"- Ellie (Chapter 31, pg. 199).
"I'm here because you're under my skin. Because I always seem to want to know you more. Because I'm not stupid and I know you're dangerous, but you always make me feel safe. I don't fucking know, Estella, I don't have any good answer for you. You fascinate me, you turn me on, you make me laugh...why does anyone want to be around anyone? I like everything better when you're there, and I don't know why, but I look at you and I always just... want you closer" - Ellie (Chapter 37, pg. 251).
"No matter what happens, I want you to play me, okay? Play me going down in a blaze of glory, if that's where it all ends. Play me even if it all goes to hell. I don't want anyone playing me, but you" - Estella (Chapter 39, pg. 272).
"I'm...furiously in love with you, and I'm sorry that I don't know what to do with that, except that I should be fucking dead. Instead, I'm here, holding your hand and getting to look at you in the sunrise, and I won't let go of that. Not ever. If you let me" - Estella (Epilogue, pg. 341).
Review:
Alright, I'm not entirely sure how I'm going to go about this review than say that the wonderful Ruby Landers delivered with this book. Not to mention Only Hope as the previous book surprised me in more ways than one, but this surpassed my expectations 10 fold. From the very beginning, it was so difficult for me not put down my Kindle and focus on my school work, that's how bad it was. This book had me sitting on the edge of my seat, rolling down a hill, and getting runover by a car type suspense, IT WAS THAT GOOD. You know, good is an understatement, but I'm over here wondering what Ruby Landers was on lol because this book is amazing and so beautifully written. Starting with Ellie, I feel there is so much more weight than her perceived as the young actress who was just dumb in wanting to get in proximity of Estella just for a silly role in a tv show. I believe Ellie was exceptionally brave in wanting to stick around until it came down to Estella killing for her. The plot could have easily turned in the direction of Ellie finding it hot or attractive what Estella was doing, but I actually liked how Ellie disagreed because it displayed how she still valued her own morals and didn't just find it acceptable. She was incredibly complex and strong-willed in her own little way, and I absolutely loved that about her character. For Estella... she was completely just badass from the moment she was introduced in Only Hope, I was like, who the heck are you and why are you so hot like omg. Anyways, Estella had so much more than just playing the role of the powerful mob boss; she was written as someone who was perfectly able to hide her fear and emotions under the surface. But when it came down to when Ellie or herself were in danger, it was like a different Estella was beginning to take center stage, and I absolutely loved that. I loved how, underneath everyone obeying her, she was just a woman at the end of the day who loved attending yoga, taking care of business when needed, and ultimately was broken until meeting Ellie. But to add to her as a human, she was so smart and naturally thinking 2 steps ahead of everything, even when it came to faking her death and completely starting over. With Ellie and Estella together, I immediately sensed the chemistry and was always so happy seeing them interact. My favorite moment with them was definitely them spending time together at the pool and just casually talking. I loved how Estella was always so concerned about Ellie's involvement and staying outside of the mob stuff. Ellie was self-aware that she shouldn't be around Estella due to the risk that comes along, but she ultimately just longed to be around her and simply didn't care about the stakes, and I find that so sweet and heartwarming. So yes, I'm 100% a hardcore shipper of freaking Estella and Ellie all the way. Now, with the ending, I was and still am utterly shocked by the plot twist towards the end. It caught me off guard so much that I was actually crying and overwhelmed entirely. That's something I give credit to Ruby Landers for because it takes a lot for me to cry, but this was just so good. When I figured out that Estella had faked her death and renamed herself "Aurora," I was crying even more. At first, I was thinking, who the hell is Aurora, and then I kept reading, and I was legit smiling and breaking down all at once. Overall, I loved everything about this book. Literally, I honestly wish I could reread this book for the first time to relive the emotions again. Rating this book 1 million stars out of 5.
