“The emotions are complicated. I am overwhelmed with gratitude for the double transplant I received. The speed at which I received my organs, I am convinced, wasn’t absolute miracle. Being the recipient of such a miracle is overwhelming. I am filled with joy and thanksgiving.”

Title: An Unexpected Journey
Author: Larry Q. Allen

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This is a biography book.

This book tells Larry’s story of his life so far. While it touches on his past and his vocation of being a pastor for years, it mostly focuses on the years of his retirement so far. Traveling as a full-time RV’er with his wife. It culminates in his incredible story of his need to get a kidney and liver transplant.

I know Larry and his family so this may be skewed a little bit, but overall I enjoyed this book. I think I struggled with the travel part of the book and skimmed that more than really read it deeply. The real “meat” or part of this book that held me is when he starts to share his health struggles. Especially the time around his transplant. One of the unique things about the book is, he gave a chapter of the book to the mother of the organ donor and she shares the story of her son. It was especially touching to hear her side of the story. The other two things that were main themes in this book were Larry‘s love of being a pastor and how he continues to be able to use that in his life today. And secondly, the support of his family during this time and how he knows without them he would not be where he is today. So if you are a reader of biographies, this book is a short read that you could finish in a day.

The first few chapters talking about the travels were a bit much. Choppy and unnecessary details. But the rest of the book was much better. Having a personal tie to it made it hard for me. I cried a lot. Then the chapter with Ben’s mom was a great addition. And the last chapter was a great testimony.
