Parijs, 1877.

Update September 16th, 2024:

Mademoiselle Eiffel
was just published a few days ago. So I'm a little late, but, still, happy publication day!!

--------
Mademoiselle Eiffel by Aimie K. Runyan is a gem of a novel. I was, of course, attracted to the book by the cover. What a hat! Okay, there’s a tower there as well. This novel, like the Eiffel Tower, has a certain je ne sais quoi that really makes it a marvelous read. It’s set in late 19th-century Paris and immerses you in the environment of the era. But it’s mostly a story about a brave and tenacious woman, Claire, who plays a significant role in shaping her life and the lives of others, defying all the odds against her.

Paris in this century, much like today, was brimming with culture and innovation. Claire’s father, the famed Gustav Eiffel, certainly contributed to that with the numerous modern structures his company built. Claire was integral to this development, becoming her father’s influential assistant at the young age of 14. This is all the more remarkable considering it was at this age that Claire had just lost her mother. She found herself in charge of raising her siblings and managing an extravagant household. She did all this while navigating the rigid societal restraints placed upon her as a woman.

Claire is a person of remarkable resilience and spirit. She thrives despite the expectations placed on her, earning respect both as the head of her household and in her father’s atelier. She is bold and self-assured, and when she speaks the truth, others are persuaded. Even more incredible, Claire acts alone, without her mother. There is no one to guide her as she matures into a woman, and she must rely on her own counsel and intelligence. At critical moments, she experiences considerable doubts and fears, but she pushes forward with unwavering determination and courage.

Claire often takes society’s expectations of what a woman should be and uses them to empower herself instead. One example I liked is when she shops for clothing, she likens her corset to armor and her dresses to battle gear, symbolically readying herself to face the challenges ahead with courage. This is one way she cultivates her fortitude and agency.

Paris is wonderfully realized in the novel, with the setting overflowing out of the pages. Of course, there is the iconic Eiffel Tower, a project Claire contributes to, but there are also shops, ‘maisons de couture’ with fashionable clothing, cafés, and some of the famous streets from central Paris’ arrondissements. Even the Moulin Rouge comes into the story. The novel also introduces a feast of French cuisine, including my favorite—madeleines!

A theme throughout the novel is about the choices we make. Why did Claire choose duty to her family and company over exploring personal pursuits? Were the choices that Claire made really hers, or were the choices already made for her? What would have been different in the lives of Claire and others if she had made different choices?

Runyan’s writing style is superb. Claire’s practical and determined voice flows right into the reader’s ears. The dialogue is clear, crisp, and often witty, wonderfully moving the plot forward. The characters are dynamic. From her wayward and rebellious brother to her sharp-tongued grandmother, the characters are authentic and fully drawn.

Mademoiselle Eiffel is overall an exploration of strength, resilience, and the power of self-determination. Aimie K. Runyan has crafted a story that is meticulously crafted and deeply moving, with a protagonist who will stay with you long after you finish the book. Claire’s journey is a testament to the human spirit’s capacity to overcome adversity and attempt to chart one’s own course in life. If you’re searching for a book that will move you, challenge you, and remain with you long after you’ve finished reading, then Mademoiselle Eiffel is the book you need to pick up. Seriously—you just have to read this!

My thanks to NetGalley and William Morrow for this arc in exchange for my honest review. Thank you.

Claire is the eldest daughter of architect Gustave Eiffel, her childhood comes to an end when her mother Marie passes away, her father's devastated by his wife’s loss, and he needs help looking after the four younger children, running the household and his business. Claire fills her mother’s shoes, she does a great job and even travels with him while he oversees the building of a bridge in Portugal and as she's his secretary and confidante.

Gustave knows he will retire one day, he wants to hand his legacy over to the safe hands of Adolphe Salles, his young protégé, and he would make both a suitable husband for Claire and the perfect head of Compagnie des Établissements Eiffel. Gustave wins the biggest commission of his career and to build an iron tower on the Champs de Mars for the world trade fair to be held in Paris in 1889, to showcase France’s position as a leader in food, art, design, science and architecture.

Not everything goes smoothly for Gustave Eiffel, he only has two years to build the Eiffel tower, his biggest and most important project, nearby residents protest about it, saying it’s too big and will block out light, what will happen during bad weather and he worries about the safety of his workers and later another commission he takes on in Panama ends in disaster and he faces being prosecuted and sent to jail.

I received a copy of Mademoiselle Eiffel from NetGalley and William Morrow Publishing in exchange for an honest review. Aimie K. Runyan writes about one of the most famous structures in the world using real facts, I had no idea how much planning and work went into building the Eiffel Tower, including the observation deck, laboratory, restaurants.

The narrative tells the story of Claire Eiffel Salles a young woman who plays a major role in her father’s life, supporting his business, she raises her younger siblings and her own children, and preserves his legacy for people to marvel and admire for years to come, for many it's a symbol of hope and the pinnacle of French architecture.

Five stars from me, once again Ms. Runyan has written an interesting historical fiction novel, she sets a very high standard and writes about inspirational and smart women.

Author Aimie Runyan's the newest book, Mademoiselle Eiffel, is another solid entry into a growing body of works by this talented author. This book takes in look into the life of Claire Eiffel, the oldest daughter of world, renowned architect/engineer, Gustav Eiffel. Seamlessly blending historical events with her gift of creative fiction, we get to see a portrait of a young lady who was thrust into the role of mother and sister, when her own mother died at the age of 14, she also was asked to take on the responsibilities of being the assistant for Gustav Eiffel. It was a job that never ended. Eiffel was one of the most prolific engineer/architects of the time and addition to his namesake Eiffel Tower, he also designed the Statue of Liberty, as well as taking part in the failed French effort to build the Panama Canal. In between all of these are numerous buildings and bridges that he designed, with us first following Gustav and Claire, just a few months after Claire's mother had died, to Portugal. It was there that she was put in charge of many aspects of the bridge project as well as lending a keen eye and valuable input into the project, which is something that continued for the rest of their collaboration. The world knows much about Gustav Eiffel, but not nearly so much about Claire, but she was a huge part of his success. How much so? Well, if you go to the top of the Eiffel Tower, you will see a small apartment that Gustav kept there, and it was there that he entertained Thomas Edison. That apartment today contains three statues, one of Gustav, one of Edison and one of Claire Eiffel! She was with him during the difficult times when he was charged with crimes due to the disastrous Panama Canal fiasco, even though he was never in charge of that project, and was called in at the last moment to try to help salvage the project, nonetheless he was one of a few whipping boys at the French decided to prosecute. The newspapers which had previously cheered Gustav now turned their back on him, and it affected both himself as well as Claire. Even though eiffel's conviction was eventually overturned, it was sufficient to make him give up his career as an engineer/architect. While he was busy with his business, Claire was busy, trying to keep the family together and play mother to all her siblings, including her reprobate, brother Edouard. This book is, as usual, filled with wonderful characters and dialogue, which is the trademark of the author. For those longtime fans of hers, you will miss French recipes, which are not part of this book, as she concentrates exclusively on the Eiffel family. Nonetheless, this will be a popular book club read, and there's a lot to discuss about a woman who gave up her career and her own path in life, to dedicate life to her father and his business.

The story of Mademoiselle Eiffel reveals a fascinating figure of Claire Eiffel who made a great impact in maintaining her family’s legacy and their iconic contribution to the city of Paris.

The story begins with the family grieving the loss of the mother and wife of Gustav Eiffel. As the family pulls themselves together, the father expects his eldest daughter Claire to take over running the household and taking care of the younger children.

Claire relates the story and is glad to be close to her father and away from the overbearing grandmother. She becomes his personal assistant as she is the one he trusts the most. This is a time when her father is working on an important project, building a bridge in Portugal, which takes longer than expected. Thus, Gustav goes to the site and takes his daughter with him. And as Claire gets more involved in her father’s projects, she learns his architectural trade.

When Eiffel takes a young protégé, Adolphe Salles, under his wings, Claire feels pushed aside, but the animosity turns into friendship and more.

Then Eiffel receives the biggest commission of his life, a great iron tower, and the family legacy grows. But when the building of Panama canal turns into disaster, Claire fights in preserving his father’s legacy.

Claire is an interesting character, educated, strong-willed, devoted, but there were moments when I questioned if she’d be defiant to such extent as she was toward her grandmother and speak in such strong words as she did.

I wasn’t fully connected with her character as she was someone who worried about not being able to leave her mark on the project her father and husband were working on. I prefer characters who see a bigger picture of humanity. Despite her good traits, she seemed to be a bit too self-centered.

In big parts the story is driven by dialogue which might be to the liking of some. I prefer more dimensions to the character with descriptions rather than dialogue.

Nevertheless, it is a fascinating story, and it was interesting to learn about her character and contribution she made.

This spectacular historical novel brings Claire Eiffel, daughter of the designer of the Eiffel Tower, to vivid life with painterly details and gorgeous prose. We get to see her as clearly as the City of Light's most arresting sight, and the essential role she played in her father Gustave's success after her mother died.

We see the extreme sacrifices forced upon her--her dreams of being an artist relinquished as she rises to the role of helpmate--just as keenly as we experience the city she profoundly impacts, its bustling scenes, sounds, and lavish tastes in the late 1800s.

Would the tower ever exist without her? And would the family legacy ever have been saved without her, after her father's imprisonment following disaster on his Panama Canal project? Her courage and its historical impact form the heart of this magnificent tale. A triumph!

Runyan's novel about Claire is rich with her devotion to her family and their legacy. Runyan's love for Paris, is evident in some of her novels and this one is special.

I have been lucky enough to go up in the Eiffel Tower which is in the heart of Paris and an iconic structure. I have to admit I did not know much about the history of the Eiffel Tower.

Runyan gives us a fantastic novel about the history behind the iconic tower brought to life by Gustave and his daughter Claire. Claire is close to her father and when her mother passes at an early age she goes on too care for her younger siblings and is an assistant to her father.

Gustave Eiffel is known for his architecture and bridges, so when he bids to design the Eiffel Tower for Paris, it’s a delicate balance of what comes to fruition.

Runyan is always an auto-buy for me, and this one was another hit. I love learning about history and Mademoiselle Eiffel was ENLIGHTENING for this history lover.

Thank you Suzy Approved Book Tours for this amazing novel and a place on the tour for Aimie K. Runyan's latest work.

🗼Mademoiselle Eiffel is the latest release from international bestselling fiction author Aimie K. Runyan. A writer who loves to bring her readers incredible stories of strong women with extraordinary lives, Runyan’s 2024 published novel Mademoiselle Eiffel is a tale of loyalty, strength, ancestry and the Eiffel family’s defining influence on one of the most celebrated monuments in the world. Filled with history, emotion and power, this is moving tale of memorable people and events in times past.

🗼Meet Claire Eiffel, the brilliant and beautiful eldest daughter of world architect Gustave Eiffel. Claire’s idyllic childhood is shattered at fourteen when her mother passes away and she must step in to care for her younger siblings. Eventually Claire becomes indispensable to her father and his work, playing an integral part of his legacy, especially when her relationship with his protégé, Adolphe Salles morphs from rivalry to love.

🗼Mademoiselle Eiffel by Aimie K. Runyan offered such a beautiful experience, especially as it was a buddy read with a dear booklover friend of mine @coffeeandpages2021. There's something so special about reading a book alongside someone who shares your exact love for stories and Paris. This novel provided plenty of meaningful discussion and opportunities to dream about our favourite place in the world.

🗼Mademoiselle Eiffel represents the first book I've read by Aimie K. Runyan and I was absolutely captivated by her storytelling. The author notes at the end of the book were a highlight for me. I appreciated Runyan’s robust insight into the inspiration behind the story, the historical research she conducted and the way she brought the era to life.

Mademoiselle Eiffel follows the journey of the eldest daughter of the legendary architect Gustave Eiffel. I instantly connected with Claire and found her character to be both strong, inspiring and relatable. The book explores her personal growth against the backdrop of Paris in the late 1800s and I loved how it delves into themes of sacrifice, loyalty and determination. The story also touches on love, devotion, preservation, freedom and the search for autonomy.

One of my favourite parts of reading Mademoiselle Eiffel was viewing the lovely illustrations of the Eiffel Tower at the beginning of each new chapter. It was such a charming touch and felt like this little nod to the iconic structure was perfect given the subject matter.

I'm definitely looking forward to reading Aimie K. Runyan’s previous release, A Bakery in Paris, which is already sitting on my bookshelves waiting for me. If it’s anything like Mademoiselle Eiffel, I know I’ll be in for another great step into history. 4 stars 🌟 🌟🌟🌟

I love the Eiffel Tower - there is just something about the iconic landmark that you just have to see and visit in your lifetime. I knew very little about the tower besides the name of the man who was commissioned to build it for the 1889 World Fair. The drama that unfolds on how quickly it had to be built and how the Parisians protested the building of the tower, were among the eye opening events for me, but there were so much more in this well researched and expertly told story. There were so many details about the life of Gustave Eiffel including the disastrous Panama project I had never known about. But the heart of the story is Claire. Claire had an important role in keeping the family legacy, while also raising her siblings and her own children, and behind the success of the Eiffel Tower, which ended up being a symbol of hope, and a feat in modern architecture.

Congratulations to author Aimie Runyan on this incredible story and a wonderful addition to the historical fiction genre.

When I first heard about Mademoiselle Eiffel, I was instantly intrigued to read about the Eiffel family. I knew almost nothing about the Eiffel Tower in Paris except that I’d love to see it one day. The cover of this book is exquisite and really drew me in.

I ended up being absolutely fascinated with the Paris of those days and especially about Gustave Eiffel and his eldest daughter, Claire.

The historical aspects of this story were amazing. I had no idea that Gustave Eiffel was also involved in the building of our own Statue of Liberty.

I really loved how the author portrayed Claire as a strong, intelligent, independent woman of her day.

I’ll definitely be looking into more from this author.

Mademoiselle Eiffel is a captivating story about a fascinating woman—Claire is the eldest daughter of acclaimed architect Gustave Eiffel. Claire is only 14 when her mother dies, but she is suddenly mistress of the house, a mother-figure to her brothers and sisters, and her father’s confidante. I was fully immersed in their world, a booming Paris in the late 19th century. The relationship between Claire and her father is captivating; she is a strong, smart woman, and her father trusts her in both business and personal matters. In this way she is given a voice that most women of that time were denied, even though many opportunities were still out of reach for her. It is easy to get swept up into this compelling story, told from the point of view of a brilliant young woman who is devoted to her family and its legacy. I received an advance reader copy of this book.

Mademoiselle Eiffel is as beautiful and innovative of a story as the Paris icon itself.

Aimie brought to life a woman who history doesn’t really acknowledge and I think she did it justly. Claire Eiffel was placed in an unimaginable position at a very young age. Her mother passed away when she just fourteen and her role in the family changed in an Instant. Filling her mother’s shoes became her priority…from managing the household to assisting her father as he builds his empire, Compagnie Eiffel. As a young lady, she was dreaming of becoming an artist but the change in circumstance turned her world upside down. She chose her responsibility over her dreams and like she said in the book…were they just childhood fantasies? She was never given the opportunity to find out. And that makes Ursule, her childhood friend who is able to follow her artistic pursuits, such a creative addition because Claire could see what she could have become though it brought with it a slue of questions in itself.

Aimie has got to be the master of an immersive story. With her last two novels, I could smell and almost taste the amazing food and scents she described. This time I felt like I was parsing a painting, layer by layer, color by color with the sound of fizzing champagne on the side!

Bravo!!! thank you so much to Aimie for bringing Claire Eiffel and the city of Paris to life! I hope readers really enjoy getting to know Claire as Aimie envisioned her. Please be sure to read the authors notes, though Claire Eiffel was a very real person, there’s not much information to go by and that’s what truly makes this story historical fiction! And thanks to NetGalley & William Morrow for early access to this amazing story!

This was my first book by Aimee K. Runyan and I was totally entertained. This story is a historical fiction book based on Claire Eiffel. She was the oldest daughter of Gustave Eiffel, the architect of the iconic tower in Paris. She had an idyllic life, being well educated, beautiful, and of great importance to her father when her mother died when she was 14. She cares for her siblings, the House, helps him with his business and learns his trade. When her father ends up in prison for his involvement in an endeavor to build a canal in Panama , it's up to her to secure his freedom while also preserving her family's legacy. I found this story very interesting as I really had no idea about this family and their history. I definitely learned so much. This is something that I love about. historical fiction.

Thank you to the publisher for the gifted copy in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

I think we all know of the iconic Eiffel Tower but do you know who built it - or why?⁣

I am convinced I would have never gotten that D in history in high school if I had people like Aimie K. Runyan around! Her stories have opened my eyes to fascinating parts of history, I knew nothing of before - things I probably should have paid more attention to back in school. ⁣😬

The way she weaves these stories together - impressively researched and brilliantly crafted tales - flawlessly depicting strong women facing adversity and breaking down walls, in times where women were meant to just scrub the walls and keep their mouths closed.⁣

Claire Eiffel is one of these women. ⁣

When her mother dies, she immediately steps up to not only manage the Eiffel family household, but also becomes her father’s most trusted confidante in his construction business. Determined to be part of upholding the family legacy, while pushing her own dreams and aspirations aside, Claire is a force to behold.⁣

It’s an incredible story of a remarkable woman who deserves all the spotlight - and a book that will excite and impress historical fiction readers, francophiles, or anyone who just loves a wonderful story inspired by true and remarkable events.⁣

Aimie K. Runyan, the Author of “Mademoiselle Eiffel” has written a captivating and intriguing Historical Novel. In this well written novel, the Genres are Historical French Fiction, Women’s Sagas, Women’s Historical Fiction, and Adult Fiction. The author vividly describes the French scenery, food and dramatic and colorful characters in the nineteenth century. Aimie K. Runyan is an amazing storyteller and brings this novel about the Eiffel destiny to life.

Gustave Eiffel is known for building the Eiffel Tower in Paris, which has contributed to France’s culture, and brought many elite people to France. He also is known for the disaster attempting to build the Panama Canal. The Eiffel family is a strong and wealthy family. Perhaps the eldest daughter Claire Eiffel, has contributed to this story and her father’s success. When her mother passed away when Claire was fourteen, Claire helped raise her younger siblings, was in charge of household events, and accompanied her father on business trips. Claire took detailed notes for her father, and also voiced her opinions and beliefs. This was noteworthy as women didn’t have the same power as men. Claire’s younger sister married first, and Claire gave up her dreams of becoming an artist, to take these serious responsibilities on.

Eventually Claire marries Adolphe Salles, who is being groomed to take over for her father. In this powerful novel, the author discusses the importance of women’s contributions in history. The author also mentions the importance of family, friends, fairness, legacy, love and hope. I highly recommend this informative and memorable novel.

In historical fiction author Aimie K Runyan's Mademoiselle Eiffel, the story behind the invention of one of the world's most well known structures is unveiled. Not only this but masterfully told by the woman behind the scenes so to speak . . . the eldest daughter of Gustave Eiffel (Claire).

Mademoiselle Eiffel brings to light a heroine who at a very early age experienced a tragic situation, and ultimately had to rise to womanhood in a very short order in a time when women weren't considered as equal to men nor valued much for their opinions especially in the business world.

Not only does this novel tell the story of Claire Eiffel, but in a very well rounded way does it touch on who Gustave Eiffel was and explores his accomplishments far beyond what we instantly think of him when someone says the name "Gustave Eiffel" (Eiffel Tower). This novel is very well written and researched to bring readers into the heart of France in the 1800s.

I believe that readers of Mademoiselle Eiffel will come away with a great satisfaction and appreciation for the legacy of the Eiffel family name, but also come away with a wealth of knowledge.

Well…Aimie Runyan has done it again. I loved The School for German Brides. And this one is right up there with it!

This story follows Claire Eiffel and her family. Her father was the amazing architect behind the Eiffel Tower. When her mother passes away, Claire does her best to be everything to everyone in the family. She even became her father’s private secretary. This change in her life leads her to give up her dreams of becoming an artist herself.

I love a book that has me researching. I immediately started looking up Claire Eiffel. She was truly a lady ahead of her time. And this story captivated me all the way through.

Claire is strong willed but because of the time period she lived in, she was constrained, in more ways than one. But, she left her mark!

Need a wonderful, well researched, historical tale…THIS IS IT! Grab your copy today.

I received this novel from the author for a honest review.

Aimie has done it again by writing another interesting historical fiction read! This book is based on the life of Claire Eiffel, who was the oldest child of Gustave Eiffel. (You know the Eiffel Tower guy.)

I learned some fascinating information about the building of the Eiffel Tower as well as Gustav Eiffel’s involvement in the Panama Canal scandal.

At the heart of this book is Claire Eiffel. She was given the matriarchal responsibilities at 14 years old as she cared for her father, her siblings and her home after the death of her mother.

The book does a beautiful job digging into the heart of Claire’s obligation to family vs pursuing her dream of art.

Aimie also finishes the book with an informative author’s note of fact vs fiction in this read.

To call this masterpiece historical fiction would be a dishonor to the author in my opinion. The amount of time spent on research must have been astronomical!!

This book is based on Gustave Eiffel and his family, aka the engineer behind the beautiful Eiffel Tower. When Gustave’s wife passes away, his oldest daughter Claire steps in as his right hand person, both in business and in running the home. In that point in time, it was unheard of for females to be active in a business setting. Claire makes sure her siblings are cared for, Gustave is cared for, and puts her needs or wants aside.

When it becomes obvious that Claire’s oldest brother, Edouard, will not be able to care for the business when Gustave retires, Gustave puts Claire in the sights of Adolph Salle. Claire and Adolph marry, and she continues to run both households under the same roof.

While this book is very much about Claire, it’s also about the Eiffel family. It’s about family, and supporting each other at all times.

I love books written with so much true history in them, and this book definitely did not disappoint. Claire is a very strong female, another thing unheard of in that time period. But she has no problem standing up for her beliefs, or her family. That is very apparent when Gustav becomes embroiled in the Panama Canal scandal.

I think the Eiffel Today is such a fascinating piece of history, especially if you know all the scientific and physics applications it possesses (if you don't, read up on it, I think it's so fascinating).

But this was a look into the daughter of Eiffel, Claire. Not much is really known of her so this is an imagining of her life. She was a help to her father in so many ways- became a mother figure at age 14 to her siblings and helped her father in his business.

The sights and sounds of Paris come through in this book, I could just imagine being there and watching the Tower go up. I had no idea that Eiffel was taken to court for another project so I learned some new things in this story.

People know about and a lot of people have seen and been up in the Eiffel Tower but how many know about how it came to be and by who. Mademoiselle Eiffel is a Historical fiction revealing all and more. It is a very interesting, easy to read, and very descriptive. I loved it.

I love reading about fascinating yet unknown women from history, and Runyan’s latest adds to that list with her new book about Claire Eiffel, daughter of Gustave Eiffel. From a bridge in Portugal to Paris’ iconic Eiffel Tower to the disastrous construction of the Panama Canal, Claire was an integral part of her father’s business and her strength enabled him to continue after a family tragedy. It was so interesting learning about the details of his famous works, but I loved the glimpses into day-to-day life in late 19th century France the most. Claire was a formidable woman who should be remembered in her own right, and thanks to this book, she now will be. It’s perfect for fans of historical biographical fiction novels like those by Marie Benedict and Tracey Enerson Wood. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for my ARC.
