One of my favourite fantasy series is Katharine Kerr’s Deverry Cycle. The series itself is complete, as of 2009, with the publication of The Silver Mage, and Kerr has gone on to other things, but I’ve always hoped that one day she might go back to Deverry and tell us more.

With the release of the collection Deverry: Three Tales from Book View Cafe, Kerr has given her readers at least a taste of more Deverry. Two of the three stories - The Bargain and The Lass from Far Away - are set in Deverry’s “past” and deal, somewhat peripherally, with people who make some kind of appearance in the published cycle. The third story, The Honor of the Thing, is set in 1423, some 200 years after the conclusion of The Silver Mage. In her brief intro to the story, which features all-new characters (though of course, all-new is a relative thing in Deverry), Kerr suggests that there is an unsold Deverry novel, to which this story is a prologue. One hopes that she will be able to publish this new Deverry novel through Book View Cafe, because I really want more of Deverry, and these three tales, entertaining as they are, are not enough.

The title tells you exactly what you're going to get, here!

The first story, "The Bargain," is a beautiful fairy tale-like story set well before the events of the first book, and my favorite of the bunch. I'm glad to not have to track down an anthology from 1991 to read it!

The second and third are set in or around the rest of the series, and I thought they were all right, but a reader would probably get much more out of them if they've read much more of the series than I have (only Daggerspell).

"The Lass from Far Away" is a bridge between Daggerspell and Darkspell, the first and second Deverry novels, so it's a perfect jumping-off point for Darkspell (which I'm reading next!).

"The Honor of the Thing" is set in the 15th century. Rommardda, the elderly dweomermaster with the leopard companion, is an interesting character and I wonder if she is in the published books, or only the unpublished one that Kerr mentions in the story's introductory paragraph. I'll find out eventually....

Three and a half stars. Enjoyable little tidbit. Not as good as the novels, but good enough to remind me why I liked them so much.

Three short stories from Deverry.
The first set in 301 and involves a character who could possibly be an early incarnation of Prince Mael.
The second set in 1061 during the earlier events of Daggerspell and involves Nevyn and a young shipwrecked woman.
The third set in 1423 as a prequel to Sword of Fire the 16th Deverry novel, and introduces Benoic the silver dagger who helps the main characters in SoF. I had read the 3rd already as it was included at the end of SoF but it was still good and I especially enjoyed the character Rommardda, a title that had been mentioned in an earlier book but hadn't been expanded on until now.

All three stories lived up to my expectations of Katharine Kerr's magnificent storytelling. I love getting a glimpse of other side characters from the world I've come to love during the main timeline.

As expected this was a fantastic addition to the amazing Deverry series. There are three different tales that add a bit extra to the original tales. Enjoyed them very much.

Deverrry is my favorite of all time.

I read my first Deverry novel over 30 years ago. I impatiently awaited each new novel.
I am not one who reads a book twice, but i read the series every few years. I have at least two copies of each book (a few three) in case the spines wear out.
The stories and, indeed, the world she's created is so rich in characters and imagery with an underlying dose of Celtic history.
Enough said .... Just read one of the novels for yourself.
Thank you Katharine.

I will preface this review with the fact that I have been an avid fan of Kerr's Deverry series since 2001. I can never get enough of the stories that come from that world, and Kerr's story telling and character weaving in this book are phenomenal. These three tales stand by themselves and yet add more depth to an already brimming-over-the-top world. Fast paced, fun and quick to read, these stories tease you enough to leave you wanting more!

Intriguing tales

After discussing the Deverry cycle recently, it's whetted my appetite to read more - very pleased to find this little collection of short stories that flesh out the books a little. Might have to Google and re-read them again now!

It may have been 25 years since I binged the Deverry books. So I really enjoyed my revisit to the realm, the characters and the language. Three new stories, but with the familiar atmosphere. Loved it.

Good stories

I keep finding new stories in this series, and I like it! These are entertaining and filled in some holes rather nicely.

The three short stories in this collection reminded me why I loved Deverry in the first place, they brought me back to when I first picked up Daggerspell and was captivated.

A welcome distraction

How I have missed Deverry, and the smile it brings to think about the characters, and the twists of wyrd. Keep the tales coming.....
