Tools for Life: 10 Essential Therapy Skills Everyone Should Know by Dr Kirren Schnack is a clear, compassionate and genuinely useful 5‑star read. Drawing on over twenty years as an Oxford‑trained clinical psychologist, Dr Kirren breaks down ten core skills—like understanding your patterns, soothing anxiety, setting boundaries, and healing past pain—in a way that feels both evidence‑based and very human. What stood out most is how practical the book is. Rather than staying abstract, each chapter offers concrete tools, reflections and exercises you can actually use: identifying people‑pleasing, noticing your attachment style in relationships, challenging unhelpful thoughts, and learning how to respond differently when your nervous system is in overdrive. The tone is warm and non‑judgemental, making it feel like a supportive therapy session on the page, and the structure makes it easy to revisit chapters when specific issues flare up. Overall, Tools for Life delivers exactly what it promises: accessible therapy skills you can carry with you long‑term to feel calmer, more confident and more in control of your choices, even when life is uncertain. It’s a fantastic resource both for people already in therapy and for those who may never have access to it. I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Tools for Life is a practical, accessible, and genuinely helpful listen. Dr Kirren Schnack presents core therapy skills in a way that feels approachable rather than clinical, making them easy to understand and apply to everyday life. I appreciated how grounded and compassionate the advice felt, and hearing the book narrated by the author added warmth and authenticity. The tools themselves are simple but effective, offering useful strategies for emotional regulation, communication, and self-awareness. A valuable audiobook to dip in and out of, especially for anyone interested in improving their mental wellbeing without feeling overwhelmed or judged.
I’m not sure what to think about this book. I think the content is useful but I am not sure that they amount to therapy skills. It’s a handy little book to understand some of the subtleties of human behaviour but I wouldn’t say it gives practical advice or tools. Thanks to NetGalley and pan macmillan for the arc.
