Hanna Harp’s incendiary debut paranormal dark romance, perfect for fans of Sadie Kincaid’s Forged in Blood and Keri Lake’s Anathema, follows Cade, a devoted hunter fighting to shield his sister Callisto from a haunting generational curse, but when a mysterious spirit begins to break down his defenses, both his passion and his will ignite into a scorching, fourth-wall breaking read that places you at the heart of the story.
This is not just a book. It’s an invitation. A contract sealed the moment you turn the page. If you choose to read, you choose to be seen. If you choose to follow him, he will hunt you. This story does not end when you close the book...
Cade Halloway is a hunter, raised by the Order of the Covenant—a cult built on blood, sacrifice, and power. He tracks and eliminates the powerful and corrupt. A predator disguised as a savior, but he’s not here to save the innocent. He’s here to rip apart the monsters who hide in plain sight. For years, he has been their weapon. Until he discovered the truth...his sister Callisto is slated to be their next offering.
Callisto Halloway was supposed to die for the Order, but her brother has other plans. While in hiding, unable to help or fight, she spends her time trying to control the power she was born with, the power that the Order will kill for. But independence comes at a price, and her uncontrolled power summons a demon far more dangerous than the Order. One that wants more than her body or her soul.
Now, on the run from the Order, Cade’s only purpose is to save his sister. But Callisto’s power has consequences. There’s now an unseen force—a spectral presence—following Cade he can’t explain and can't escape. A presence that breaks down all of his defenses, and tears down walls even he didn’t know he had built, as he finds himself drawn to it in mind, spirit, and body. And it may be the only thing that can save him and Callisto.
Firstly, it's falsely marketed as a book that the mmc's love interest is you aka the reader. Part of it is true but it's not the sole focus of the book. It's mostly focused on the side characters and their romance. Besides, the way the mmc drooled over the reader- or rather us- was not romantic in any way. But simply weird. The spice was cringe to read.
I admit breaking the fourth wall is not an easy task to accomplish in a book but this one was an extremely poorly executed book. The plot is practically non existent. It's also all over the place and messy. Half of the things that happened made absolutely no sense to me. It reads like a first draft that never got edited.
Hell no.
~•~•~ Fourth wall breaking story where the reader is the love interest? Gotta check it out now
Not even the great Teddy Hamilton could save this mess of a book💔
This book suffered from so much; flawed execution, pacing issues, repetition, insta-love and insta-lust, and most importantly false-ish advertising.
When I heard I would be the love interest and Teddy Hamilton would be OBSESSED WITH ME, I was like FINALLY MY TIME TO SHINE... I did not shine besties.. I barely even glimmered😭 Those scenes were so few and far between because the focus in the book wasn't Cade, but his sister and Alabaster. Don't get me wrong though, Alabaster was probably my favorite part of the whole book. He was funny, sassy and very very hot, but everything else about the book was a mess.
Everything happens so fast between everyone in this book. It felt like watching a movie but you had missed the first 20 minutes 😅 The relationships were very shallow (except Cade and his sister), everyone was just in love so quickly. Cade fell in love with me and he didn't even know my name guys. (Can't blame him though💅)
The story only got interesting toward the last 10%, but truly this book did not need a sequel. With better execution, the two books could have been one decent one. Everything was very predictable, and the ending was abrupt and disappointing.
This is a debut, so hopefully book 2 will fix the mess here.. I don't know if I will even bother with it though.. we'll see.
Ashlyn we will find a 5 star book someday girl 😭

I have no idea what to expect but Teddy Hamilton will be blessing my ears and that is enough for me🙌
So you're telling me I'm the obsession and Teddy Hamilton will be talking DIRECTLY TO ME??
I was so excited for this one, but unfortunately it didn’t live up to my expectations. I went in thinking we’d get a Cade x Reader romance, but I barely felt part of the story. It mostly focused on Callisto and Alabaster instead. The whole reader as the love interest concept sounded amazing, but the descriptions made it feel like some ghostly presence, definitely not me.
I fully went into this expecting my Wattpad y/n era renaissance. Like, I wanted to be haunted, seduced, maybe spiritually traumatized in a good way. Me and Youssra were SO hyped after the author said it would break the fourth wall and make the reader part of the story. Babe, the only thing that broke was my heart.
Everything was just… messy. And not in the sexy, chaotic, morally gray way. Like, the “if you read, you choose to be seen” thing sounded cool until I realized the only thing being seen was my disappointment. The pacing felt like it chugged three energy drinks and forgot where it was going. The writing was messy and all over the place. I feel so lied to and betrayed (yes, I’m being dramatic, but it’s justified). I wanted possessed and passionate, not perplexed and plotting my escape.
I want to start off by saying I am but one person in a sea of people. My rating isn’t meant to tell anyone what to do or push anyone in a single direction, it’s meant to give my opinion which is what I’m doing.
That being said, my review isn’t meant to bring anyone down or bash the author’s work.
I was so intrigued by the premise. Fourth wall breaking. My chance to be the love interest. A spicy good time with Cade. I was really hyped to read this book and about squealed when I was accepted to be an ARC reader.
But my main criticisms come from the fourth wall breaking itself. It didn’t seem to be a major focus on book one (it’s a duet by the way). It felt like the story was more focused on Callisto and Alabaster than Cade and me (us). I didn’t feel like there was much of a reason that Cade falls for us, either. And I get that in order for it to work for all genders, orientations, etc, it has to be vague. But it felt too vague in that aspect.
Half of the time I didn’t know what was going on. It felt a little rushed and it bounced around here and there from POV’s. Which is fine, but I felt like a lot of details were left out that could have been useful. I know there’s a second one coming out, but I felt like I really went into this first one blind and didn’t get a lot of answers.
Marketing for this book is/was incredible, I will say that! And as much as Jack was a womanizer, I really enjoyed his character. Did him dirty!
**Thank you to NetGalley and Simon Maverick Books for sending me an eARC. This was my honest review.**
I really, really wanted to like this book. The premise sounded so good: me, a love interest? Say less! Although intriguing in theory, I felt the execution just wasn’t there.
First, we kind of get thrown into the story with no context. I was super confused at the beginning, and some aspects of the plot and characters were never fully explained. I know there’s a second book, but it just felt like important details were left out of this first one.
The multiple POVs were very hard to follow. In Chapter 16, there’s even a moment where we’re reading Callisto’s first-person POV, and then it randomly shifts to third person for a line before switching back. Overall, I think it would have been better to split the two storylines of Cade and Callisto into separate books. Combining the two plots also made the story feel rushed.
I know Cade was supposed to be the reader’s love interest, but honestly, I found myself more intrigued by Albaster as a character.
I’m sure the audiobook will be fun as Teddy Hamilton is a great voice actor. However, this book just didn’t hit the mark for me.
Thank you NetGalley and Simon Maverick for the eARC of this book!
I was promised a lot and unfortunately the book didn't deliver. First, this book was clearly advertised as a book where the reader would end up in a Kinda relationship with Cade, breaking the fourth wall and all. Turned out, this book was more focused on Callistor and Alabaster. Then, this book was all over the place, this isn't a long book yet it still succeeded in feeling dragged because the plot wasn't, to me, that exploitable, or rather maybe adding layers to it would have been more interesting.
Clearly, nothing interesting happens between reader and Cade in this book, and this only feels like bait to make us read the next book. I'm not sure I will.
Have you ever wondered what a monster romance and a Mission Impossible scene together would look like? Well you can if you read this book LMAO. Or at least that's what it felt to me at times, but at least it was FUN. 💞
I have to say I did like this one, not what I expected though. I think there was a lot of marketing done mostly for Cade and us - the reader- being the love interest. But this story is not just that AT ALL. If anything, I wish we got even more of Cade and his backstory, and why we somehow integrate with that. It didn't feel like that though?
Why he like us even 🥴🥴
I would've preferred more of that and less of.. whatever the other couple was about 😂😂 it was a bit confusing at times, I think the other relationship was a bit unnecessary at least for me, instead of exploring the other elements. But Cade, bless his soul he's very loveable and protective, at least we were there for him through his rollercoaster of emotions 🤭
But but don't let that deter you because it's a good read and debut, with that ending we're in for a interesting time in book 2 haha, or I so HOPE IT DOES! I have to say it was kinda abrupt and the overall novel felt too short for the answers I still had at the end, but it might make more sense in the next one.
Plot: 6/10 Cade: 10/10 Teddy Hamilton: 1000/10 Characters: 6/10 - Callisto and Alabaster are actually funny, Jack is alright I guess
Thank you for selecting me for this ARC opportunity. I am so excited to get a chance to read this before people lose their minds when it's out into the world!
I have been obsessed with the concept of this book since I saw the first video about it months ago. I didn't know how it was going to play out, but I'm not disappointed! The way the reader was placed into the story didn't feel forced, everything flowed well and made sense. I am very impressed with how well this concept was written out.
Am I still going to listen to the audio? Yes. I think that is what will turn this into a 5 star read for me, simply because the idea of Teddy Hamilton reading this as Cade, I feel, will amplify it for me personally.
My only complaint is that I wish there was more of our dynamic with Cade. I feel like that will be the case with book 2 given how this one ended and I am very much looking forward to that.
In the most respectful way possible… I think the hype did this one dirty 😅
It’s not a bad book my any means, like the concept is actually super cool, and the idea of being hunted by your own story had me instantly intrigued. But somewhere between the BookTok hype and my sky-high expectations, it just didn’t hit the way I wanted it to. The 4th-wall breaks felt a little lighter than I hoped (and minimal), and while I loved the culty, dark undertones and the morally gray hunter energy, it all gave me major Haunting Adeline déjà vu. Which, hey, isn’t the worst thing, it’s just not super original for me personally.
It’s one of those reads that you want to love because the vibes are immaculate, but the execution didn’t quite deliver the hype the premise promised. So yeah… decent read, just not the reality-bending obsession I was ready to lose sleep over.
💀 You’ll like this if you enjoy: • Haunting Adeline energy but toned down a notch • Characters who toe the line between savior and monster • Dark romance with supernatural spice • Creepy, seductive narration • Books that make you glance over your shoulder, just in case 👀
TL;DR: Came for the 4th wall Dark Romance, stayed for the spooky flirtation (and spice), left feeling like I got ghosted by the hype👻
I really don't know how to rate this one 🫣 The audio book was awesome. All of the narrators' performances were spectacular.
I found the story easy enough to follow and I enjoyed the different POVs, but, the book was heavily marketed as the reader experiencing being a part of the story and it took me a while to realise that the ghost presence was us. There was extremely minimal content to go on because while the title is Haunting the Hunter (the hunter being Cade). The whole story is based around Calisto and Alebaster. I'm definitely invested in the story enough to get the second book when it comes out. Who knows, maybe the reader involvement will actually have some inclusion that is worth the hype it was given.
I don't want to dishearten the author, though. She tried something i haven't really seen before, and it is such an amazing concept. The story was good, I personally would have loved a bit more background on the secret society itself, too, and definitely would have liked to have seen more on the discovery of Cades ghost. I will be following for more. 🤗
I was hooked on the idea of this book from the moment I first heard about it. The concept felt genuinely fresh — a story that breaks the fourth wall, blending reader and fiction into one experience. Every time it popped up on my FYP, I got that little spark of excitement again. Unfortunately, that excitement didn’t last once I started reading.
To put it plainly, I’m disappointed. Deeply so.
I went in expecting to be at the heart of the story, but instead I felt like an afterthought. My part in the narrative was more of a passing subplot than the promised main focus. The breaking of the fourth wall — the very thing that drew me in — ended up feeling more like a gimmick than a core element. The “you” character was barely there, sprinkled into a plot that didn’t seem to know what to do with them. It wasn’t the vague descriptions that bothered me (I’m fine filling in the blanks with imagination); it was the lack of presence, of purpose.
And then there’s Cade. I wanted to believe in the connection between him and “me,” but it just wasn’t there. The love confessions came out of nowhere and felt forced, almost hollow. With so little genuine interaction or emotional buildup, it was hard to care about their relationship — or to believe it at all.
The pacing didn’t help either. The story jumped from scene to scene, introducing plot points that never really led anywhere. More than once, I caught myself wondering why certain events or details were even included. It read like a fanfiction that had a cool premise but didn’t quite manage to tie all its threads together. At times, I honestly didn’t even know what was happening until a few chapters later.
It doesn’t help that I found Callisto and her demon-god pet incredibly annoying. She couldn’t seem to decide what she wanted, and their relationship was just as flat and unconvincing as the one with Cade. The dynamic felt repetitive — all tension, no depth — which made it hard to stay invested.
The spice was mediocre at best.
By the end, when the final pages teased new promises for the next book, I felt nothing but skepticism. I wanted to trust the story again, but it never earned that trust.
So, as much as I wanted to love Haunting the Hunter, I won’t be picking up the sequel. The idea had potential — incredible potential — but the execution fell flat, leaving more frustration than fascination.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I wasn’t a huge fan of this one, unfortunately. The story just felt a bit discombobulated and confusing overall. I really wanted more background on the Covenant and more depth in the characters - it kind of felt like I got dropped into the middle of a story that had already started and I was late to the party.
I was super excited about the audiobook, but that ended up being another letdown. It wasn’t a true duet in my opinion. The only parts that felt even somewhat duet-style were when both characters were in the same scene, which was pretty disappointing.
And the whole concept of the invisible entity (which I think is supposed to be us, the readers?) just didn’t land for me. It felt random and didn’t make much sense in the context of the story. The spice also happened almost instantly, and it didn’t really fit with how the plot was unfolding.
Overall, this one just didn’t click. Bummer, because I really wanted to love it - but I won’t be continuing the series.
This book is not a bad book. However, this book has been hyped and anticipated for months so the expectation was incredibly high for the fourth wall storyline. Maybe it's on me for going into books as blind as I can be, but I did not anticipate another couple in the storyline and the mix of the additional couple with the fourth wall didn't flow well for me or meet my expectations.
A friend told me it gave her "Her Soul to Take" vibes and she is correct, it has that same vibe with the coven and god. This book also feels like the beginning of the story and very unfinished so keep that in mind when picking it up. It's the beginning of the storyline, not the whole shebang.
Overall, I'd say it's worth a read if you readjust your expectations. I will still read the second book and enjoyed the storyline enough to continue following.
“It’s you.” **squeals in 14 yr old-millennial girl, seeing the Backstreet Boys for the first time** didn’t know it was an incomplete series tho! Need the next book!
I binged this on audio under 24h 😮💨. THAT is how fun this book was. I love how different the story is, how captivating and hilarious Alibaster is, and the way the characters fit into the plot. This is a different type of story than your usual romance. It's dark, dangerous, and magical. I would say this book is fun going in blind with the audiobook and just enjoy the wild ride 🤭! But if you want to know more here are some details and why I loved this book:
In this story, you, the reader, are actually a character, one of the 4. There is a brother and sister duo who are trying to get their revenge against people who hurt them. While you and a demon are love interests in their stories. Callisto has Alibaster, who is bound to her and helps her learn her magic (she is a witch) with an interesting twist to who he really is. And Cade, her brother, has you, his 'little ghost' who protects him and is there for him.
This was such a refreshing listen; the audiobook narrators did a fantastic job. Teddy was spectacular as usual, but it's Christian Leatherman who really shone in his role as a sarcastic, ancient demon. I laughed so many times, he was incredibly fun, and I loved every second of his monologues, especially on how weird humans are. The spicy scenes were also fun 😏.
Cade was such a deep character too, he spends most of his time getting revenge for what was done to them while bringing down the cult that hurt them. He is sexy, dangerous, and constantly puts his life in danger. Which is when you, the ghost, become a big part of his life. It's sweet and cute, and I loved how different this read from other books.
The writing was actually good and engaging. The book has an interesting end, and I am very excited for the next part!
I would recommend listening to this on audio! That's where the book and story really shines!
3.75⭐️ A fourth wall breaking book where the reader is the love interest, I was sold!!
The beginning started so strong, I will say this is a duet and I think the first book did a great job setting up for book 2 where the story will be more focused on Cade rather than Callisto and Alabaster. I think the issue lied in this originally being one book and then split into 2.
Cade’s inner war with himself I absolutely loved, and I can’t wait to see more of his character development. I did really love Callisto and Alabaster even if they weren’t the main reason I originally read the book.
However, I did absolutely enjoy the audiobook, I mean Teddy Hamilton sign me up! I absolutely love this concept and I cannot wait for book 2
Thank you so much to Hanna Harp and Simon Maverick for the opportunity to read this pre-release in exchange for my honest review.
I was all here for the vibes. It was a interesting use of a the "Y/N" (Your Name) though I do wish we got a POV from us the reader. If that makese sense. Probably not lol. But it was a nice act of 2nd person. I absolutely need book 2 just to see what the hell is going to happened.
Where do I start? Honestly I can’t think of anything redeeming about this book. To start, this was heavily marketed as a book where you, the reader, are the love interest. I’ve never read anything like that before so I thought I’d give it a try. Throughout the entire book, there were probably only a handful of scenes where *the reader* is present. Cade (who is supposedly the readers love interest) is very unlikable (literally the first scene of the book is him having sex with this girl then stabbing and killing her during it, like what?) The scenes that were meant to show the reader as the love interest were Cade saying “I can feel your presence” or “I can feel you watching me”. Ugh. And I guess that would have been ok if there were more than five scenes like that. But that’s all we got! There was no “love story” at all, like whatsoever. And by the end of the book Cade is in love with us. *eye roll* Perhaps the reason we got so few scenes with “the reader” and Cade is because more than half the book is based off his sister’s love story. Why? I couldn’t tell you. I hate her love interest more than I hate Cade. To quote him, “She’s so pretty when she’s asleep. Probably because it’s the only time she shuts up.” Are we serious? And to make matters worse his name is Alabaster (gag). I was so close to dnfing this book it’s not even funny.
The book had soooo much potential for plot but it ended up falling short with execution and writing. Overall, the writing felt too cringey and a bit confusing at times - but then again maybe dark romance may just not be for me. I lowkey could not take the book seriously especially in the smut scenes 💀💀💀.
A dark romance where you are the love interest?? Sign me up. I absolutely enjoyed this book. I couldn’t put it down. I decided to take it in bites because I didn’t want to finish quickly.
This book has the plot and the spice. It was the perfect mixture of both. I’ve never read anything like it before. I was hooked from page one. I’m excited for the audiobook to come out.
The characters were well written. The story was great. It kept my attention.
I’m afraid to say too much because I don’t wanna spoil it but I NEED the next book. I don’t know how I’m gonna be able to sleep until I read it. The cliff hanger has got me.
