This is like the best book I have ever read!!! I was reading this and couldn’t stop. I had to drag myself out of bed to do stuff.
The story has thrills that have you on the edge of your seat and romance!!! 💘 I was so sad when the book ended and had a cliffhanger!!!!
And the cover is amazing! 🤩 like when I first got it I was obsessed with the cover. It shows exactly how the story plot and is and not at the same time! I love it!!! 🥰
I would definitely recommend this book for 10- to maybe 16. Depending on their reading level. It will teach your kids about the love of God and how to trust and have faith in him no matter what.
I can’t wait for the second book. I will be waiting and the second it comes out, I am buying it!!!!!

Heart of a Bowman swept me away from the very first page. The world Jil Koller has created is breathtaking; richly layered, imaginative, and full of heart. It’s adventure, faith, and courage beautifully woven together, with characters you can’t help but root for. Colt and Tess have that rare kind of chemistry that makes you both smile and ache, and the story’s themes of truth, honor, and self-sacrifice feel so refreshingly countercultural in the best way.
It’s one of those reads that reminds you why clean, faith-driven fiction still has a powerful place in today’s world: no language, no spice, and yet deeply romantic and full of tension. Perfect for teens and adults alike who love meaningful fantasy and strong moral storytelling. I closed the book already counting the days until book two!

Received as an ARC reviewer: I really enjoyed Jil Kohler’s debut novel. It was so adventurous and fun to read! I enjoyed seeing how Tess, Colt and Deacon developed their relationship throughout the story. The characters remained true to themselves. I am so looking forward to seeing what is next in their adventures!

As a debut, the story isn't perfect, but it has a lot of positives and there were several elements I thought were executed well and found enjoyable.
⚔️🏹💣I was really impressed with the battles throughout the book! From pirate ship skirmishes to castle attacks, and everything in between, the thought behind each strategy was clearly well thought out. This is a tough element to master in fantasy storytelling, and I really enjoyed the characters' clever solutions throughout the story as they race to save their kingdoms. (Or "tierdoms," as they're called). The story ends with exciting hints of more to come and I'm really curious how the villains' master plan will play out 👀
🧭⛰️🌊The world building felt fresh and original with a vertical world called the Spire. Although I never quite grasped the practical implications of the world's design (such as how some tiers can't see sunset), the concept was really neat. Cultures felt integrated naturally, and I love the idea of each kingdom having its own "Truth Stone." It's the only magic-adjacent feature in the story, so you prefer your fantasy light on the magic, this one will be for you! There are also dragons very briefly, but they don't play any significant role in the story. Maybe in the future!
👸🙎♂️🤷 On the whole, the characters were fun and compelling. Tess is spunky, smart, and kind, Colt is noble, duty-driven, and clever, and Deacon (my personal favorite) is loyal, funny, and definitely has my favorite arc in the story. Some elements felt a little immature and repetitive, such as Tess and Colt's frequent arguments over her safety, but I still found the cast likable and worth rooting for.
There's a lot to enjoy in this story! The adventure is action-packed and plot-driven with a pace that moves fairly well after about the first 1/3. Unfortunately, there were a few things I found hard to believe or that broke the immersion:
Characters use words like "yeah" and "nope," which felt kind of out of place for what otherwise seems to be a 15th-17th century inspired world.
The timeline also felt impossible to me, and because it was so short, I also questioned the romance. I didn't find myself rooting for either potential relationship.
Some characters acted much less intelligent and discerning than I would expect for their role. This could be an intentional story element that gets revealed later in the trilogy, but it struck me as odd.
Give this story a chance if any of the elements I mentioned sound like your kind of story! Despite a few flaws, it's a worthwhile and enjoyable story. I look forward to what's next for Tess, Colt, and Deacon.

Jil Koller masterfully creates a world and an epic adventure that kept me wondering how it would turn out.
Tess and Colt's chance meeting in a marketplace turns into a bond forged through trials and danger when the royal gathering they are attending is attacked by invaders. As the only ones who were outside, it's their job to put their love and devotion of their land and people to the test to warn the tier's king and get aid. Colt's Bowman code is paramount to him, causing him to constantly deny the growing feelings he has for her.
Meeting up with his childhood friend, Deacon, takes the adventure to the high seas and air as the threat against the kingdom is bigger and of a nature that no one thought possible. Tess proves her skill with a bow, bravery despite clear danger, and dedication to their ancient religion time and again.
I was caught up in the adventure and quest to save the tier. The world building was clear and unique, including the trade elements and truth stars. Colt and Deacon were crafted so well as foils of each other to demonstrate qualities needed in the kingdom as well as those that Tess needs in support. Tess' desperation to do something for the kingdom and not be a political ornament or pawn was inspiring and fleshed out well. I desperately wanted Colt to be honest about his feelings and stop hiding his emotions and love behind the code. I guess I need to wait for the next book.

It's not often I rave about worldbuilding. The last time I felt like this about a book's world was when I read Kingdom of Ruins by D. C. Marino. The "Vertical Horizon"? Absolutely fascinating. The way she worked through each facet of the world kept me riveted each time some new thing appeared. My brain still struggles with trying to make the characters standing sideways all the time when I think about it, but while reading the story, that never happened.
But CHARACTERS are the true gems of this story (truth stones and such notwithstanding). Tess, in particular, really stood out. She's strong, and she's trained to BE strong. She's determined, confident--all the things you want to see in a female character, but she isn't arrogant. While her royal status probably gave many advantages, it can't give her skills. She had to earn them. And that's what is so great about Tess--her strengths and virtues are EARNED. And she'll be the first to admit when she isn't good at something. Yes, she's impetuous and headstrong, but not just "because reasons." She's how and who she is because of the life she's lived, the choices she's made, and because when you grow up royal, people tend to defer to you. But she also recognizes her responsibilities even when they are inconvenient. All in all, I just loved how delightfully flawed and strong she was--all at the same time.
It took me a while to figure out how similar Colt and Deacon are. While Bowman Colt adheres to his code with the pride and discipline of a US Marine, Deacon creates his own code that he holds to just as well--pirate or no. Seeing both men grow in opposing ways only balanced that even more.
Finally, the faith story of the Freefaller and the All-Father has an almost Lewis-esque quality to it. It's not quite the same, but I feel certain Lewis would approve, anyway.
The book has one glaring flaw, however. The next one isn't out yet, and I do not know how on earth I'm going to remain sane while I wait for it.

What an amazing writer! God has gifted Jil in a special way! I read a lot of Christian suspense/romance books, but this is the first time I’ve read a “fantasy” book and in my humble opinion, Jil is right up there with some of the best! I was on the edge of my seat the whole book through to the end! Such depth of characters, and such intrigue and the story line is exciting and fantastic and complicated and daring! I can’t wait for the Heart of a Spy and the Heart of a Warrior to come out so I can purchase them too!

My daughter gave me this book for Christmas and wanted my opinion of it. I began reading on Saturday night thinking that I would get a feel for the setting of the story and go from there. I struggled at first with the complex relationships and intentional misdirections in the first few scenes but once the stage had been set the plot flowed at an exciting pace. So much so that i finished the story the next day, despite an already full schedule!
All of the characters, even seemingly minor ones were well-developed and believable. We saw both strengths and flaws in each person and we were given glimpses into how each of our main characters dealt with the good and bad aspects of their relationships.
Even though the story is set in a fantasy world the decisions and struggles that the characters face are easy to reconcile with my own life and the decisions I must make on a daily basis.
I look forward to the next book to continue this saga.

This book checked all the boxes for me.
The romance was my favourite kind..not cringey or unrealistic. It was the kind of romance book I’m not worried about my kids picking up from the coffee table, if you know what I mean. Clean, but swoon worthy at the same time.
The back and forth between perspectives of three different characters also kept my interest throughout, and I think it appeals to both male and female readers for that reason.
There were whimsical elements like ships that don’t seem like they could possibly fly, an emerald that helps the characters make vital decisions, and ‘dragon-like’ creatures! I also found myself describing this incredible idea of a ‘vertical universe’ to friends as I read it! How it operates and how the pirates have to raid by moving up and down in space rather than across an ocean. Such a fun concept!
Now that I’ve read it, I have decided it’s a book I am confident my children ages 13, 11, and 9 will love as a read-aloud, because it’s also packed with action and an epic battle. For sure the older two would enjoy reading independently as well.

Heart of a Bowman is a wonderful and exciting adventure. I loved how romance, fantasy, comedy and thrill all take place in this story. The characters are unique and complex with great backstories that make the reader want to know more about them all. Their personalities come through so clearly in their decision making and comedic interactions. I can picture them all as they challenge each other and grow in their individual attributes throughout the plot. The romance is fun, clean and witty; a rare jewel in many of the books I’ve come across. I love the setting Jil has created with kingdoms, war battles, economics and trade at play. The strong values of truth, integrity and chivalry are depicted throughout the story. I would highly recommend this book to those who love rich stories that leave the reader feeling encouraged, inspired and like they can’t wait to read the next book!

Such a fun and exciting adventure! The effort Jil took to be knowledgeable in the areas her characters are masters in really paid off. The world was unique and interesting and he characters had such great chemistry. I am excited to follow along as the journey continues and the stakes become even bigger. Colt was really a stand out for me and I loved seeing his inner struggle between his emotions and feelings and his call of duty and honor. I have never enjoyed a pirate book before, and Jil was able do to the impossible and make me fall in love with Deacon's crew and the Girl. Can not wait for book 2!

You really have to love a story where the princess isn't afraid ro get her hands dirty. I should also mention that Tess keeps her princess identity a secret.
However, Tess and Colt soon finds themselves on a journey to help save the Kingdom. They are later joined by Deacon who is an old friend of Colts. The joirney is long and tiring and they will all need to keep up their goals for the mission. Overall this was an exciting story and I am glad I got the chance to read it.

It was such a fun & intriguing read! I appreciate the descriptive details that paint vivid portraits in one's imagination. I can't wait to see how the rest of the trilogy unfolds! It's going to be tough waiting for the release of the next 2 books! My daughter was immediately hooked and is speeding through this book, as she does with riveting stories that grab her attention. Who doesn't love a good tale of adventure with genuine characters, good lessons, and an underlying mystery?

Heart of a Bowman by Jil Koller
I loved the heart of this female main character. She is strong yet selfless, adventurous yet grounded. She understands government and military tactics, but what stands out most is how she uses her position—always for the good of others. Where Katniss Everdeen tends toward introspection and heaviness, Princess Aratess moves through her world with open affection, choosing to see the best in everyone she meets.
This story carries a deeper thread as well. Aratess reflects a heart that feels distinctly Christ-like—compassionate, intentional, and full of grace. The novel is layered with Christian themes veiled in myth, but it’s Tess’s unmistakable, Jesus-like spirit that stayed with me. There’s a sense here that faith is not only serious, but also alive with joy.
The author does a masterful job pulling the reader forward with steady momentum. Action, intrigue, and mystery are balanced well, especially in the unfolding question of why these events are happening. I found myself fully engaged—and honestly, there had better be another book, because I still have questions.
I’m not typically drawn to battle-heavy stories, but these scenes were handled in a way I appreciated. Rather than focusing on graphic, moment-by-moment violence, the narrative leans into the strategy and behind-the-scenes movement, which made it far more compelling for me.
And romance? Lol…you’ll have to discover that for yourself.
Overall, the author’s voice reminds me of Gail Carson Levine, especially in the tone of her YA princess stories—light, engaging, and full of heart, even when the stakes are high.

The first scene of Jil Koller’s Heart of a Bowman engaged me and kept me reading. I enjoyed the story world and intrigue. The author has created such a different story world, a map would be helpful. I like the subtle hints of the story world’s spiritual nature. Those who enjoy series will appreciate the strong draw to anticipate book two. I look forward to reading the next book and revisiting the characters and their story.

Heart of a Bowman is a thrilling adventure story that takes place in the "Vertical Horizon", a huge landmass that rises from the endless sea. It contains four tiers, one on top of each other. Each tier contains a different people who trade with and depend on each other and a "truth stone" which governs the behaviour of each people along "Christian" lines. They have been at peace for years. Suddenly war breaks out. Tess, a princess, Deacon, a pirate, and Colt, a bowman of teh realm, must save their realm and possible the entire Vertical Horizon.
The author has created a wonderful set of characters to support their efforts. Adventure after adventure follows and along the way love blooms, slowly, ever so slowly. Jil Koller has given us a beautifully crafted old style epic adventure that will leave readers on the edge of their seats.

This book is not my usual type of read, but once I started this book, I couldn't put it down. I found myself completely lost in the story, and the pages turned quickly in anticipation of what was going to happen next. I love the characters of Tess, Colt, and Deacon. Jil had me so invested in them with her imagination and storytelling. I can't wait to continue their story in book two!

Heart of a Bowman by Jil Koller was a great book as a first in the series. I really enjoyed reading this book. It has a lot of adventure, a good bit of action and a hint of romance. The gospel is definitely present in the many mentions of faith in this book.
Captain Colt Hawthorne is the main male character in this book. He is one of the King’s elite bowmen who has put everything into his training to be the best of the best. His faith is shaky, he believes in a higher power, but he is just not sure that who everyone else thinks it is, is Him.
Princess Artess is a Princess of Ardenia she wishes she could leave the life of royalty behind and become one of the elite bowmen, but she is a Princess, and she is a girl. There are no women among the king’s elite bowmen. When an invasion happens as she is attending an event, she and Captain Hawthorne will have to get help as they escape skyward as their world is made up of different tiers.
Along the way Colt and Tess will begin to see things a little differently. Things may not be as they appear. They have one destination in mind, but then Colt realizes he cannot go to the king based on the bare information he has about what is going on. Colt decides he is going to enlist help from his childhood friend Deacon. Colt would take Tess to safety, but she insists on continuing the journey. Colt and Tess will be tested on this journey, individually and as a team while both holding onto secrets.
I wholeheartedly recommend this book; it was a fun read. There was just the right amount of humor and seriousness. The world building was great too, especially the pictures of the tiers of nations.

I loved it! Real characters, with real challenges, relatable struggles, and great jokes. I was hooked from the beginning, and am devastated the second book isn’t published yet 😩. It has a very unique world, and I LOVED the pirates with their flying ships 👀👀.
My only negative is the descriptions at the beginning of the book could have been clearer, as I was confused for a while on what the vertical-style kingdom actually looked like. Absolutely recommend this to anyone who enjoys fantasy, world building, and a couple of hot archers 😉 ***this book has no spice***

"Heart of a Bowman" had me on the edge of my seat from page one til the last. Jil Koller has quickly become one of my favorite authors!! "Heart Of A Bowman" is nothing short of a masterpiece that is clean and faith filled. A romantic story, that includes two individuals (Tess and Colt) that make it impossible to put down.

Adventure, romance, flying ships, battles and a bomb dropped at the end leaving you dying to read more. This book is fantastic. The world and characters came to life beautifully through Jil’s natural writing ability, creating a magical world. Looking forward to reading more of Jil’s writing, and eagerly awaiting the next book!

I love the chemistry between Colt and Tess from the beginning of the book. Their genuinely connection is sure to make you smile. As we witness
Colt and Tess adventures and romance, driven by their moral choices. Their faith and values shined through naturally. I was on the edge of my seat, as their journey unfolded. Truly, a must read for teens and adults.
