But surviving Esperance was only the beginning . . .
Amryn never intended to betray the rebels she swore to help—or fall for the husband she was forced to marry. But when everything at Esperance fell apart, Carver became the one person she could trust. Now, she must rely on him more than ever—especially since the knights who hunt empaths know one was at Esperance. If they find her, they will kill her. Yet the threat Amryn doesn’t see coming may prove deadlier, because even though she turned her back on the rebels, the Rising isn’t done with her.
Carver has already lost too much at Esperance. He won’t lose anyone else—especially Amryn. He’ll fight to protect his wife from every threat, including the mysterious bloodstone that nearly killed her. He knows the dangerous relic must be destroyed, but first he has to get the surviving Chosen to the capital—a mission that soon turns deadly, making it clear there is still someone out there who never planned for the Chosen to leave Esperance alive.
But safety isn’t guaranteed in the emperor’s palace. Here, every action is scrutinized and politics twist every word. Surrounded by hidden enemies, ruthless assassins, and deadly conspiracies, Amryn and Carver must navigate a web of danger that could cost them everything—including their lives.

RUUUUUUUUN!!! Invictus is available and trust me on this one! You need this one!!It is for sure a top read for me this year and ever! Gosh the book hangover I have now is for real! I don't think I can focus on another book for the rest of this year.
If you looked up the word Perfection in the dictionary, Invictus would be listed. Along with the synonyms of Ford, Carver, and Ivan.
What do I even say without spoiling anything? Except that I think everyone should read Esperance and Invictus, so that they can know the pain that Heather inflicts with her cliffhangers and plot twists. Muahahaha! But seriously, Heather is a genius with these stories and I am so eager for the next book!
I absolutely adored the chemistry between Carver and Amryn. Some of the most delicious romance I've ever read! Carver is so protective, so sweet, so thoughtful, everything! He is one of my most favorite fictional MMCs! His character is perfect without him being perfect. He has a haunted and wounded past, one he is trying to overcome. I love that Amryn becomes part of his healing process. Oh I just ached for him, but loved the compassion and comfort Amryn provides him.
The side characters all play their parts so well! Ivan, Ford, Jayveh, Sadia, Samuel, and even those who are enemies! Let me tell you that this book is beautiful inside and out, jaw-dropping, emotionally damaging, and I know you will just love it! If you love fantasy books with sizzling romance (closed-door/swoony), high-stakes, tension, betrayal, intense scenes that will literally cause you to have anxiety for the characters. I don't think I have ever been this invested in fictional characters' lives. There were several parts where my blood pressure probably went high.
Anyways, HIGHLY recommend this trilogy! Start with Esperance and prepare yourself for a rollercoaster of emotions!

Thank you to the Author for the review copy. All thoughts are my own.
“Being unconquered means moving forward even when we’re broken.”
Amryn and Carver are in the capital trying to stay alive and protect the people they love. Danger’s everywhere, trust is scarce, and their pasts are heavy—but together? They heal. They rise. They become Invictus. Now that they’ve mended each other, it’s the empire’s turn.
Heaven help me, Heather Frost writes romantic lyrical suspense like almost no one else. Carver and Amryn… I’m speechless. We always knew their love would be deep, but this book cracks them wide open. I don’t think I’ve ever read a more tender, closed door intimate scene—full of grace, vulnerability, and the kind of healing that feels sacred.
Letting someone see your scars and love you anyway? That’s the gift they find in each other—and they’ll fight fiercely to protect it.
I am so grateful to Heather Frost for bringing us the world of Esperance, and Amryn and Carver’s love story.
Invictus is an extraordinary sequel to Esperance. The enemies to lovers are back, fighting for their love and lives at every turn. Just when the duo is enjoying a moment of peace and marriage bliss, another threat or unexpected twist envelops them. Betrayal after betrayal.
Heather writes her closed door romance scenes with tension and desire. The writing is exceptional and unique, her characters are captivating, flawed and relatable, and there is so much treachery! I was quite literally sitting on the edge of my seat the entire book. And the ending…brutal cliffhanger! I cannot wait to read Invictus again!
I received an Advanced Reader Copy of Invictus. This is my honest and unbiased review.
There is only one word that truly describes a Heather Frost book…EPIC! But if you need some more: incredible, heart-pounding, intense, shocking, addictive.
In the case of most trilogies or multi book series, the second book is slower and less engaging as it sets up all the details to make for a compelling and entertaining conclusion in the next book. That is not the case for Invictus! The story starts immediately following Esperance and it hits the ground running. It doesn’t let up.
This book is a heavy hitter, not only in length, but also in plot, action, and emotional damage. When it comes to complex and intricate story telling, Heather is a master. She can have you smiling from wit and dying from anxiety in the same scene. She will immerse you in her fictional world and leave you breathless with her swoony romance. And the fight scenes! Iykyk! There is one scene in the story that had me in a chokehold and had me falling for Carver Vincetti all over again.
I’m not giving away any more details. Just know this, Invictus exceeded my ridiculously high expectations and I’m not sure how I will survive waiting for the next book.
Thank you, Heather for the advanced copy. All opinions are my own.
Oh. My. Gosh. I won’t be able to move on after this book.
I read about a couple books per week, so I read a lot. It is no small compliment to say that when I first read Esperance, I knew it was my new #1 favorite about two thirds of the way through. My emotions did their own thing when I got to the end and I mourned that I reached the end (which had never happened to me before)… UNTIL NOW!
Even with all the anticipation building for months, I devoured this book in two (otherwise busy) days and loved every. single. moment. I laughed, I shouted, I gasped, I cried, and my Fitbit probably wondered what in the world was going on.
Just like Esperance, expect the mystery, the developing romance within a marriage of convenience, the surprise twists, the action, the magic, and the emotional rollercoaster! Carver and Amryn are not done and Heather Frost needs all the cheering on to continue the adventure until book three is ready!
*A FAIR A WARNING—you WILL find it ends with a cliffhanger. So prepare yourself.
I liked this sequel but it felt a little slower than the first. I really like the characters and I feel like I’m always surprised by the plot. Overall it’s still a fun read
Wow! What a brilliant read. I feel like I say this every time I read a new book by Heather Frost, but it’s so worth repeating – She is a master storyteller, and I will read anything she writes.
The story picks up right where Esperance left off, and the world continues to expand as the remaining couples from Esperance travel to the capital to stay at the palace. There, Amryn and Carver face court and political intrigue, the mystery behind the bloodstone, enigmatic prophecies, assassination attempts, mysterious journals, and people who want people like Amryn dead. The story is full of action, danger, and betrayals, and Amryn’s secret puts her in constant jeopardy.
The major standout for me throughout the story was the romance between Amryn and Carver. I am officially in love with Carver and have moved him up on my favorite book boyfriends list. My word, that man is in love! I adore MMCs who will burn the world down for the FMC, and I fully believe Carver is that kind of man. The way he feels about Amryn is so swoon-worthy, and some of the things he says and does in this book were incredibly lovely and romantic. And the softer, quieter moments between them were so precious. It made me love them both even more. There’s also a budding romance that I’m 100 percent rooting for!
I also adored Carver’s family. They are loud and loving and the way they welcome Amryn into their family is so wonderful. They’re different from what I expected, which was a delightful surprise. Carver’s sisters and little brother are fabulous, his mother and father are exceptional, and his other brother is complicated. His relationship with Amryn is a step toward his healing, I think, and I have a feeling he is going to have a major role in the next book.
Invictus is an explosive follow-up to Esperance! The story delves into topics like the bonds of family and friendship, the desire for power, and the dangers of intolerance, ignorance, and blindly following the dictates of society. It’s a gripping and layered read that had me in a chokehold from start to finish and left me with my jaw hanging open at the end. There are so many twists and several shocking revelations, and I know I’ll be thinking of them and how everything is going to unfold until the next book comes out.
Thanks to Heather Frost for providing me with a copy of the book. All thoughts are my own.
A wonderful second installment of the Esperance Trilogy! Loved all the character development and the mysteries continue. The budding romance between Amryn and Carver was *chef’s kiss*. I felt it was a little darker than I was expecting in terms of themes and violence, but overall I enjoyed it. The number of times the fine hairs on [insert body part here] raised in response to whatever was going on were numerous. Plot twists abounded. Cliffhanger for an ending. Will be reading book 3!
I have been anxiously awaiting this sequel for 3 years and it was definitely worth the wait! The pacing was perfect and there was always something happening so I was engaged the entire book. And that ending?! I need book 3 stat!
*Disclaimer: I was selected to be an ARC reader, but a positive review is not required*
I am a huge fan of Heather Frost, and I have been (impatiently) awaiting this sequel for years now. I am happy to report that Invictus is worth the wait!!
I absolutely loved getting to know the characters better, and I was drawn back into the world of Esperance easily. I really love the lore and magic system in these books, and I was glad we got to learn more about Amryn and her family. I cannot wait for the third book!!
Man. What a STORY. This did not go how I was thinking at ALL. So many surprises!!! I definitely hope it doesn't take ages for the third one to come out because I am VERY invested now. Big fan of how the MC's relationship has unfolded and the writing is beautiful, particularly the descriptions of human complexities and relationships. There was serious thought put into those! The author is refining her craft and definitely growing as a writer. Really looking forward to the continuation of this story.
What a wonderful mind Heather has! These worlds she creates are so intricate, the characters so compelling. I love her stories and hate that they always end on a cliff hanger because I'm not patient and I want the next book now! But I will wait and reread the series to be ready for book 3 when the time comes!
I love this series! Heather writes amazing characters that you can't help but love. My only complaint is that I have to wait to find out what happens next.
INVICTUS (Esperance Trilogy Book #2) by: @heather.frost.author
••I give 5 stars!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
~She chose to trust him. He swore to protect her. But surviving Esperance was only the beginning...
“I chose you-not because it was safe, but because it was true.”
‼️First, and most important: Its ESSENTIAL you read book #1, Esperance before reading INVICTUS! It is worth it!💯
-Invictus is a gripping continuation of book #1, Esperance. It immediately expands and continues the world far beyond the trials of Book One and deepens dear relationships. My goodness, this story took me on quite a rollercoaster with all the feels. I thoroughly enjoyed the constant danger as power, loyalty, and secrecy collide. I absolutely loved seeing quiet strength and moral resolve continue to shine, and how steadfast devotion adds emotional weight to every choice made. In between the layered themes of oppression, honor, and resistance, Invictus precisely balances and weaves action with introspection that delivers with an emotionally rich, character-driven fantasy! Invictus, is truly an epic action-packed, layered, and emotionally engaging story that is worth reading and loving. Well-done, @heather.frost.author !❤️📚💯👌
“You are not a weakness. You are my reason.”
‼️⚠️READING THIS INCREDIBLE STORY MAY CAUSE YOUR HEART TO RACE, AND WILL HAVE YOU GASPING OUT LOUD WHILE FEELING ALL THE FEELS. THIS IS TO BE EXPECTED. REACH OUT FOR SUPPORT, AND STAY THE COURSE! IT WILL BE WORTH IT!💯
“You’ve had my full attention since the first moment I saw you.”
•Content: no swearing, danger, fantasy violence, assassination attempts, loss, threats, betrayal, fear, unexpected twists, kisses only. Closed-door!
“I would take any pain, endure any torture, if it meant keeping you safe.”
-I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
“Nothing will keep me from coming back to you.”
#invictus
“Being unconquered means moving forward even when we’re broken.”
Going into this sequel, I carried both impossibly high expectations and real trepidation. Esperance was lightning in a bottle for me: a five-star swoony romantasy that had me completely invested in Carver and Amryn’s relationship. I’d read somewhere that good authors start plotting their second book early, but sequels are always an emotional risk. Would the characters still feel the same? Would the magic hold? The author faced the enormous task of fleshing out the storylines and loose threads in a way that made sense, and I’ll admit—I was suspicious of everything and everyone as I started reading.
Invictus picks up immediately where Esperance left off, and while this direct continuation creates a slightly clunky opening—complete with the obligatory “here’s what you missed” recap that feels more tell than show—it’s a minor stumble that the book quickly recovers from.
But then it picks up. You fall back in.
Frost masterfully weaves together a whodunit mystery with romantasy elements, creating a complex political plot that spans multiple nations and narrative threads. Double and triple layers of intrigue coexist and interweave, leaving readers gripping the pages. The world-building expands naturally, and the many forces at play create a rich, immersive experience.
And Carver and Amryn? They are so swoony. The slow burn continues, the yearning intensifies, and their relationship remains as captivating as ever.
This is one of those books where you’re reading as fast as you can while simultaneously trying to pace yourself to fend off the inevitable book hangover. You don’t want it to end.
All I can say is: wow, Heather did it again. While Invictus has a different setting and introduces new characters, it carries the familiar current of mystery, allure, adoration, and surprise that made Esperance so special. Frost sets the stage beautifully for the third and final book in the series.
I can’t wait for book 3.
I received an ARC copy in exchange for my honest review. All views expressed are my own!
“I’m not going to thank you, because I know you don’t want that right now. But I’m grateful for you, Carver. So utterly grateful that you’re the one I married in Esperance. I will always be grateful that you are mine.” If you are looking for a trilogy that will take your breath away, have swoon worthy closed door romance, and keep you guessing at every page turn, then you have come to the right place! Invictus is book 2 in the Esperance Trilogy. If you haven’t read Esperance (Book 1) yet, you have to start there! Invictus (Book 2) picks up right where Esperance (Book 1) left off and the pace never slows. Through sheer force of will I managed to not read the whole book in one sitting. (But if I didn’t have kids, and responsibilities, I totally would have!) I adore Amryn and Carver and watching them navigate and grow trust their relationship was pure magic! We get backstories on our two main leads, and it is delicious! We also get to know many new characters, including Carvers family. It was so interesting to see the family dynamics and how that shaped Carver into the man he is. If you are anything like me, you enjoy guessing where the book is going to go as you read. All I can say is that every twist and turn was completely unexpected! I would feel pretty confident that I knew who the traitors were or that I could spot the twists before I got to them, but I was completely wrong. Invictus keeps you on your toes the entire time! This book has 683 pages of incredible writing! Heather Frost is an incredible author and has a gift for building unique and beautifully broken characters. Her world building is phenomenal! She builds the world gradually and naturally as you read, so you don’t feel overwhelmed with it all at once. If you enjoyed Esperance, Invictus will leave you breathless in the best possible way! Although the cliffhanger at the end should be illegal! 😉I can’t really say a whole lot more about this book without giving away too much, so just go read it already! You will not regret it!
I don’t know how to summarize this book into a short (non-spoilery) review, because THAT much happens in Invictus. Do not go into this thinking it suffers from book two syndrome because this book… THIS BOOK <3 It has EVERYTHING! Intrigue, suspense, amazing complex characters, some new friends and of course THE ultimate ‘Romeo and Juliet’ kind of love story about two completely different people who were raised to be enemies - but fall in love.
You of course need to read book one (Esperance) before you can read this one, and it starts off exactly where Esperance finished. It meant that I seamlessly continued on in Carver and Amryns world and I honestly didn’t ever want to leave! (I still don’t and WILL be re-reading)!
Speaking of Carver… this man literally is the king of book boyfriends. If you want broody, protective (with a capital P), and a man who will literally stop at nothing to protect his girl - then look no further. Carver grew so much in this book that I loved going on the journey with him, and whilst he is dealing with his own personal growth, how he loves Amryn honestly gives all the feels. And our ‘red-haired harpy’ Amryn is such an amazing, strong and kind mfc. How she’s patient with Carver and his feelings, and also for her friends (and his family) - I honestly just LOVE Amryn and don’t know how I will be able to wait after that little (or do I say HUGE) last few pages!!!
I honestly could go on and on about this series because I love this world, these characters, the complex emotions and individual journeys, and of course the slow-burning, but would burn-the-world-down love story! Invictus just cemented my fave book (Esperance) into my now fave series and I cannot wait for the story to conclude in the next installment!
Please get writing Heather! :) :)
Absolutely five stars!!! Note: I received an ARC for an honest review and this review is my honest feelings on this amazing book!
Thank you to @heather.frost.author for the #gifted e-book.
Invictus by Heather Frost is everything I wanted and more in a sequel. As book two in the Esperance series, it builds beautifully on the foundation laid in book one (which you must read first—trust me, it’s so worth it). The world feels richer, the stakes higher, and the emotional investment even deeper. From the very first chapter, this book throws you straight into action and never lets up. Every chapter felt purposeful, packed with danger, revelations, and plot twists that kept me completely on edge.
The romance is where this story truly shines. This is a masterclass in slow-burn romantasy—closed door but overflowing with tension, longing, and breath-stealing kisses. The arranged marriage and enemies-to-lovers dynamic creates delicious conflict, while the protective, scarred hero brings all the “touch her and die” energy in the best way. Their relationship unfolds naturally amid chaos, danger, and political intrigue, making every quiet moment between them feel earned and powerful.
What I loved most was how seamlessly the devotion, romance, and magic are woven together. The empathic and forbidden magic adds emotional depth to the story, while the political maneuvering keeps the plot sharp and unpredictable. Add in witty banter, forced proximity (hello, one bed!), and the constant sense of looming danger, and you’ve got an epic romantasy that is impossible to put down.
This series continues to impress me with its balance of heart-pounding adventure and deeply emotional romance. Invictus left me breathless, invested, and desperate for what comes next. If you love epic romantasy with meaningful relationships, high stakes, and unforgettable moments, this series needs to be on your TBR immediately. “Protecting you will always be my first instinct. You’re holding my heart in your hands.” ✨
The Brief: Amyrn and Carver survived Esperance only to be thrust into betrayal, danger, secrets, and barely escaping death.
The Debrief: Oh. My. IamobsessedwithCarver. Lanta. This story tore all of my emotions and put them in my Vitamix. Then the author added chocolate chips. And before I could fully enjoy the deliciousness it was snatched away. Carver’s gentle way of caring for Amryn was goals folks. This protective stab all the bad guys hero is a big softies with his wife. I mean my accountant husband is the forever love of my life, but I am so Team Carver. My husband stabs numbers like a boss, but Carver is the epitome of all the things I love in a fictional leading man.
The story is epic. A kingdom looking for peace. Clerics judging. Politicians being annoying. Soldiers protecting. An empath trying to survive in a country of haters. It takes your emotions right along through every political power play and melted me with every ‘Carvyn’ moment. Would not recommend reading alone and you will be shook at the unending. I’m making up all kinds of words today because I am still reeling. And I’m not sorry. Things I’m not over:
🗡️Carver opening up 🗡️all the swoony ♥️ moments 🗡️Ivan 🗡️Carver seeing his family 🗡️Carver childhood stories 🗡️more to Berron 🗡️couple growth 🗡️the moment of truth 🗡️Jayveh’s throw down speech 🗡️the empathetic feelings 🗡️the entire last 20%
The Rhyme: Carver will protect Amryn with his life, but will inner forces keep him apart from his wife?
My own thoughts. Part of a trilogy. Go in blind! I do encourage reading the first book for your crush to form properly. Kissing only. Married couple. Epic battles and resulting deaths from betrayal. Not graphically described. Highly recommend!
She chose to trust him. He swore to protect her. But surviving Esperance was only the beginning . . .
What you'll love: fantasy with magic dual pov second book in a trilogy THE ENDING!!
Self, meet your new Roman empire. I am OBSESSED!!!
Esperance, the first book in this trilogy, is one of my favorite reads of all time. So yes, my expectations for this second book were sky-high. And yet it blew them all out of the water. It was fast paced with a perfect balance of magic, danger, and swoony romance. I absolutely devoured it!!
This story kept all the momentum and energy from the first book and raised the stakes in every possible way! It answered just enough questions to keep me satisfied while simultaneously opening ten new doors of possibilities. The plot twists are absolutely INSANE! I was gasping and clutching the book, and at one point had to lie on the floor.
I loved all the characters, old and new, though Carver and Amryn will be always be my forever favorites. Their starry-eyed devotion and all-in, unwavering I-will-die-for-you love make for a timeless romance for the ages.
I lived for every romantic moment between them - tender, intimate, fierce and perfectly them. All the sighs. All the swoon.
You MUST read the first book before this one. Absolutely crucial.
This book wrecked me in the best way and I am already emotionally preparing myself for book three. It is going to be an unforgettable ride and I am so here for every moment of it!!
I received a complimentary copy but a positive review was not required.
Invictus by @heather.frost.author Esperance Trilogy, book 2
“Trust me, Amryn, you’ve had my full attention since the moment I saw you.”
Um….this story has had me reeling for weeks. I’ve been unable to function past my obsession of this Epic Romantasy Series! Unheard of level of suspense, twists, devotion, trust, resilience, death and near death escapes. Epic is really the only way to describe these stories and you MUST read book one as this one starts immediately after.
“I was never —not once— afraid of you, Amryn. I was afraid for you.”
Carver Vincetti. I don’t think there could be a more perfect MC. Broken, scarred, hurt, and yet he is the most honorable, selfless, and valiant man. You’ll be a puddle with the clean romance in this one. The love he has for his wife, Amryn, blooms. Ready to sacrifice anything for her, even his life. Again and again
“I’m convinced you can handle anything.”
Amryn. Her ability causes her so much pain and yet she is always wanting to take pain away from others, even if it costs her. But even knowing what a person is feeling can be misconstrued. She is fearless. She is kind. She is searching for truth in a world that wants nothing to do with her.
“When it comes to you, I think my first impulse will always be to kiss you.”
Side characters that I ADORE FORD he is amazing and faithful and just the best. IVAN such a strong and good man. Ready to protect on the instant. JAYVEH stalwart and endlessly kind, but I fear her reaction to some news BERRON. Gah. My heart is broken for him. I cannot even with his character. Backstory, the events, and his growth. Stole my heart in a unique way And many more
“It’s not the first time you’ve left me breathless, sweetheart.”
This story is jam packed. Never a dull moment. CLIFF HANGER Ending. Constant strife amid the growing trust and love. Such an intricate story that answers as many questions as it creates more. The twists will have you at the edge of your seat. I HIGHLY recommend both Esperance and Invictus!!!!
🥹the Cello, bracelets, rooftop dinner, the ring, and the kisses 🫠🫠
I gave the first book, Esperance, five stars. It made a strong start to the trilogy. Could book two match it? Yes, and it did.
The Esperance Trilogy offers a clean Romantasy story. Read book one first, or you'll get lost and miss key parts in Invictus. Make sure to plan time to read this one because once you start, the world pulls you in, and you won't want to stop.
Invictus starts right after Esperance ends. Amryn and Carver move past their tough arranged marriage towards something deeper. They head to the capital to see the emperor. The danger ramps up fast—action, suspense, and hits on their lives. Who is pulling the strings? It's hard to guess. All the while, they guard Amryn's secret: she's an empath. Knights wipe out empaths without mercy. Dual views from Amryn and Carver make it shine and enrich the story. Their bond blooms with real tenderness, respect, and loyalty. This pair earns the word swoonworthy.
Other people add a lot to the story, such as Carver's kind mom and sister, Elowen, who welcome Amryn like she's family—something she lacked in her life. The other Chosen, Ivan and Jayveh, plus Carver's bitter, grieving brother, add some edge to the overall story.
The twists hit often with shocks that will stun you. The end made my heart race. I wished I could jump in to help. That big cliffhanger shocked me and left me dumbfounded for several minutes. There was no one to talk to about the ending at 2:00 a.m. How will book three fix it?
Overall, Heather Frost draws you in and holds you tight for hours with her enchanting story, but remember, read book one first. Also, brace for the impactful ending. This stands as one of my top reads of 2025.
Whew! Invictus blew my mind away. I loved Esperance so much I wasn’t sure how book 2 would hold up. Heather Frost left me with a story so heart-pounding, heart-stopping, I couldn’t be prepared for the end.
Invictus follows Amryn and Carver’s story since the failure of Esperance. They must travel to the Empire’s capital. And boy, the action never stops! I kept telling myself, "just one more chapter" … then read five more.
I loved the writing style; it’s poetic but also fast-paced. I don’t remember a single moment of boredom. And the romance was *chef’s kiss*. I loved seeing the world through Amryn’s eyes. Her ability to see past people’s actions to their heart is a trait so needed in our time.
Content: This is a Closed Door romance, but as a warning, it does have scenes of heated foreplay. The violence was the same as the first book, with maybe a little less gore. Little to no language.
I recommend Invictus to readers who have been searching for a fast-paced story with a swoon-worthy romance and thrilling action set against a fascinating fantasy world. This isn't a squeaky clean book for readers expecting such, but neither is it gratuitous in violence or romance.
Warning: This ends on a crazy cliffhanger. You will feel all the emotions and probably stay up way too late reading.
I received an advanced reader copy from the author for review. All opinions expressed are my own.
Well, Frost has done it again! Invictus is a well-structured fantasy romance novel stuffed with nice and tight political intrigue, swoony and clean romance, high stakes action, and a cast of shining characters you’ll love or love to hate.
The world-building is fun. The empathic powers are handled expertly. The dialogue is snappy. The pacing is solid despite the many, many pages (don’t mistake me: I love chonky books, but some can feel bloated). And that climax? Perfection.
As someone who steers clear of romance-centric stories, Frost remains my single go-to fantasy romance author, because her characters remain compelling to me, personally, outside their romances (which isn’t always the case), and the political plots are always complex and rewarding. She also knows how to sprinkle breadcrumbs in so we can make educated guesses who the traitors or villains are.
While this book does have a lot of kissing and lingering looks, it never feels gratuitous. The romance and plot complement each other is a good balance. Everything is handled with tact, but also with plenty of emotional punches. As I read Invictus, I felt EVERYTHING.
Highly recommended for anyone who wants some meat with their swoony romance!
Content: Peril, death, trauma/PTSD, in-world profanity, and closed-door/fade-to-black romance.
How do you leave a review for a book that is incredible without giving anything way?!? This sequel was worth the wait. You absolutely have to read Esperance first before continuing with Invictus, but you will not regret it.
“I was never–not once–afraid of you, Amryn. I was afraid for you.”
If you want all the swoony men, this series has them. Carver is so dedicated to Amryn and keeping her safe. If you love high adventure, secrets, fantasy, twists & turns, incredible characters, depth, romance, magic and well...a cliffhanger this book is for you! (After you read Esperance). I mean, that's what you get.
“There’s nothing more important to me than you.”
I loved how much depth this story went with the characters, new and old. It helped played into the outcome of the story. I've been savoring this one and the men....Ford, Carver, Ivan, Berron and even Samuel are leading men quality and so swoony. They are highly protective and will do anything for the people they love.
The emotions in this book are exactly what you would expect from a high adventure romantasy, except it’s clean. So you ACOTAR people…just try this series. You won’t regret it. I slowly savored this one...even when I wanted to rush, I didn't.
“When it comes to you, I think my first impulse will always be to kiss you.”
Invictus has been my most anticipated book release to date. Heather Frost did not disappoint with this exciting, swoony, and gripping sequel to Esperance!
I was torn between not wanting to read because I didn’t want the story to end and I didn’t want to leave the world and the characters — and the absolute need to keep reading to know how the story ends! The need to know how the story ends obviously won out. (I am not ok BTW)
This book is an excellent combination of fantasy, romance, suspense, and mystery. Amryn and Carver are adorable and one of my favorite book couples ever! (Not to mention Carver is the best book boyfriend ever!) their individual character development through this book was well written and I also loved to read their development as a married couple. The other characters in the book are wonderfully crafted and written and I care about each of them!
There were so many twists and turns! Just when I thought I knew what would happen next, I was blindsided by another brilliant twist! And the ending! What a cliffhanger! I was not ready. I am not ok. This will be my Roman Empire for the foreseeable future.
Let me tell you what, I am eagerly anticipating the final book of this trilogy! Heather Frost is one of my favorite authors, and I am so excited to see where she takes the story next!!!!
Friends, I am unwell. I was so nervous that I had overestimated how good Invictus was going to be….and it was better than anything I could have imagined! My brain still hasn’t processed everything that happened and I already want to go back and read it again. It was definitely worth the wait! I know a lot of you won’t read unfinished series, but do not let that stop you from reading Esperance and Invictus. I loved Carver and Amryn in the first book, but I absolutely adored their relationship in Invictus. I love that even with all the chaos going on they are fully committed to making their arranged marriage work. They are so protective of each other and I love it! I feel like my emotions have whiplash. One minute my heart is beating fast during a fight scene, then I’m angry over a betrayal, then laughing at something, then I’m swooning over the romance, then I’m heartbroken, then I’m back to being anxious. Heather is fantastic at writing deeply emotional books that pull you into the story, make you fall in love with the characters, and really root for their success. Invictus is perfectly paced with lots of action, complex characters, magic, political intrigue, found family, humor, heartbreak, betrayal, steamy romance, and a cliff hanger that will leave you anxious for what comes next.
You must read Esperance first!

"I would take any pain, endure any torture, if it meant keeping you safe."
Wow, just wow! If you want to start your year off with a five star read then this is the book for you!
I have been anxiously awaiting this book since I first read Esperance (and have re-read that one multiple times in anticipation). This was at the top of my list of books to read for 2025 and it did not disappoint!
Full of immersive world building, political intrigue, misunderstood gifts, complex characters, and swoony romance, the twists and turns of this story kept me turning pages all night.
There is so much emotional depth and growth to these characters that I have come to love. The chemistry between Carver and Amryn is only eclipsed by the growing depth of their emotional connection.
"I promise to provide for you with all that I have, defend you with all the strength I possess, and love you with all that I am."
It's not only the main characters that will keep you turning pages. There are so many side characters that will pull at your heartstrings and have you cheering them on.
Every storyline and plot twist feels not only intentional, but integral.
If you are a fan of clean well-written fantasy romance, this series is for you!
Fair warning: you will not want to put it down once you pick it up! (This is book 2 and the series must be read in order)
