In the shadowed streets of a city that never truly sleeps, Evelyn Sparks hides a secret as dark as the bodies she examines. She’s the borough coroner—cool, meticulous, and unshakably composed. But she’s also what the world believes to be a a vampire surviving discreetly off the blood that passes through her morgue. It’s a perfect arrangement—until someone starts stealing her supply.
Detective Johnathan Hale has seen it all… or so he thinks. Hardened by years of chasing killers through alleys and lies, he’s called to investigate a string of gruesome crimes that make no sense—bodies drained of blood before they reach the coroner’s slab. When he meets Evelyn, something about her unnerves him, though he can’t say why. Their partnership crackles with tension, curiosity, and an undeniable pull neither can explain.
But the trail leads them somewhere darker than either expected—a rogue vampire with no regard for secrecy, and a witch whose magic threatens to unbind the fragile veil between the living and the dead. As Evelyn and Johnathan fight to uncover the truth, old wounds resurface, forbidden desires ignite, and the line between hunter and hunted begins to blur.
In a world where blood ties mean everything, love may be the most dangerous mystery of all.

In Eileen Sheehan’s The Difference Between Us, Detective Johnathan Hale finds himself working on a series of brutal murders that are unlike anything he has handled before. His instincts guide him, but the case quickly moves outside the boundaries of ordinary police work. At the same time, Evelyn Sparks, the town’s coroner, is quietly hiding a secret—she’s a vampire who survives by taking blood from the bodies she examines. When fully drained corpses begin to appear, she realizes another vampire is involved and that the situation could expose everything she has tried to keep hidden. As Johnathan and Evelyn end up working together, both must guard their own secrets while facing a growing threat. The real question is whether Johnathan can uncover the truth before time runs out.
Eileen Sheehan blends paranormal elements with crime investigation in a way that feels clean and engaging. The story focuses on two characters caught between very different worlds. Jonathan is a human detective with sharp, almost psychic-like intuition, and Evelyn is trying to keep her vampire identity hidden. I liked how the author explores the balance between instinct and responsibility, especially as the stakes increased. The build of trust between them gives the mystery an emotional edge and makes their journey feel more personal. Their choices are genuine, even in a supernatural setting. As the plot tightens and the danger moves closer, every decision matters. Paranormal fans will enjoy The Difference Between Us, and I recommend it to anyone who likes a solid mix of mystery and supernatural tension.
Eileen Sheehan is an Award-Winning author of steamy romance thrillers for the mature adult. A professional psychic and holistic practitioner for over 30 years, the majority of her 60+ novels feature the paranormal, but some are novels about people in love and a very few are self-help. As the years progressed, so has her writing style. Although she still includes romance and strives for a happily ever after ending, her stories tend to have more mystery, thrills, and a touch of horror in them. Eileen makes it a point to write a novel length that will allow the busy readers to be able to enjoy the read in one or two evenings.
