How to Host a Unicorn: A Tale of Hospitality & Manners

Rate this book
Dag is a unicorn who likes things nice and quiet.
Nick is a bear who… doesn’t.When Nick invites Dag for a visit, he means well—but his idea of hospitality includes stomach-churning boat rides, chaotic surprise parties, and a bath towel the size of a handkerchief.

Dag does his best to stay gracious. Nick tries to show a good time. Somewhere between the fish feasts and the chandelier-spinning owl, Nick discovers what it really means to be a good host—and a good friend.

How to Host a Unicorn is a cozy, gently funny picture book about mismatched personalities, mutual respect, and the quiet strength of thoughtful souls. Within these pages, you’re invited inside a world with wit, wry humor, and plenty of fun.

Rendered in hand-drawn, imperfect illustrations that celebrate character over mechanical polish, the art honors the heart of the story that real beauty lies in sincerity, not perfection.

Ideal for sensitive kids, introverts, and the adults who were once that kind of child, this story celebrates kindness and friendship without noise, unicorns without glitter, and emotional intelligence without preaching.

How to Host a Unicorn is a delightful, heartfelt story that feels like a breath of fresh air in today’s world of overly polished children’s books. There’s something deeply comforting about its hand-drawn, homespun art. It captures that nostalgic charm of classic storybooks, with expressive lines and details that make each page feel alive.

The story itself is whimsical yet emotionally grounded. Beneath the humor and cozy storytelling lies a gentle message about empathy, hospitality, and seeing others with kindness - lessons that resonate as much with adults as with kids. I especially loved how it celebrates sensitivity and quiet reflection without ever feeling heavy-handed.

It is rare to find a book that is both cozy and thought-provoking, but this one achieves that balance beautifully. How to Host a Unicorn feels timeless - a story to be shared, reread, and cherished.

Beta read for "How to Host a Unicorn," a book.
A wonderful, creative story.
The author, Sara, has found a way to convey the message that not everyone has to be a party animal to be a good host.
Nick, a burly bear, learns a quick lesson while having his friend Dag, the Unicorn, over for a visit.
Not all of us are party animals; some of us just want to sit and enjoy the sunset, or listen to the wind blow through the trees.
Nick was trying to be that party animal, but he didn’t see the mess he was creating.
Nick and Dag find a balance after a few mishaps and plan on another adventure.

A unique story that explores personality differences between friends with digestible lessons for children and adults alike. The book features relatable characters and hand-drawn art and reminds us that being a good host means treating friends the way they like to be treated (even if that differs from the way that you like to be).

What a lovely book! The hand drawn illustrations really add an authentic element to this read. As someone who works with people of all ages, I could see how this story could be useful in helping others learn about courtesy and being aware of other’s thoughts and feelings.
