The South is burning, and Camden Callahan is done running.
With fire behind them and ghosts at their heels, Cam and Annie sail for Enoch—the stronghold of the West, and home to the one man Cam swore he’d never his father. The Governor may hold the truth behind his mother’s death, but Enoch is a city built on secrets, and it wants nothing to do with Revenants . . . or the Governor’s disgraced son. Annie’s chains are gone, but the scars remain—and so do the memories of what she was forced to do to survive. As the nightmares that haunt her threaten her growing feelings for Cam, the dead that follow her desperately try to warn her of the enemies hiding behind Enoch’s twisted politics. But as bodies continue to pile up, a darker thread comes to the mysterious Order pulling the city’s strings is hunting again, and Cam and Annie are their next targets.
Some monsters are born. Others are forged in fire.
4 .5 stars The Dilemmas of a Dead Man's Daughter is the second book in the dark fantasy series, Revenant. I loved the first book, and I didn't think it was possible to raise the bar even higher, but Brittany has truly outdone herself with this instalment.
This magical action-adventure story features main characters who will take your breath away and fill you with hope, while the minor characters are equally intriguing. Brittany’s clever writing allows the story to flow seamlessly, making the adventure both enjoyable and engaging. While it is a slow-burning romance, it also takes the reader on an emotional journey.
The Dilemmas of a Dead Man's Daughter offers an immersive reading experience that feels shorter than its actual page count; the pages turn effortlessly. The plot is gripping and full of secrets, betrayal, foes, magic, pirates, politics, and much more.
I highly recommend this dark adventure tale, where murder and mayhem are the norm. Expect the unexpected! This book is perfect for dark fantasy lovers of all ages.
There are books that keep you awake at night. Books that tug on your heartstrings. Books that make you cry on the bus on your way to work. Books that wound, and books that heal. Brittany's The Dilemmas of a Dead Man's Daughter, Book 2 of her Revenant series, is all of that and more.
If Book 1, The Calamities of Camden Callahan, taught me anything, it's to expect the unexpected. To prepare for my heart to break and mend itself over and over again. To welcome and embrace the pain, because it is worth it.
The Dilemmas of a Dead Man's Daughter takes everything a step further. A level I never thought possible, yet Brittany achieved it masterfully. Everything I loved in The Calamities is explored even more deeply, without losing sight of what matters most: the freedom of choice and the freedom to choose your family. The freedom of realizing that home may not be a place, but a person. The freedom to be brave and the freedom to be scared. The freedom to have someone be brave for you.
Cam and Annie shine throughout the book. They are the beacons to those around them. And yet, they are still far from perfect. They will never be perfect, and that's okay. They don't have to be; no one does. I said home doesn't have to be a person, and Cam and Annie proved that. The healing they find in each other is breathtaking, and I feel honored to have witnessed it. The way they offer space when needed, solace when asked, and choice without speaking a word, those moments are worth living for. And live they shall.
"You and me, until the stars or time takes us away. Even then." "Yes, even then."
The Dilemmas of a Dead Man's Daughter is an experience, one that will keep you on the edge of your seat. It is full of twists and turns you will never see coming. It is an experience you will be grateful for. I know I am.
Thank you, Brittany, for having me as your ARC reader. It was an honor.
I haven't been so deliciously broken by a story in a while. I was silently sobbing from chapter 27-31. My heart was torn out and trampled on from both sides and only Annie and Camden could fix it. I stayed up late so I could finish and binged it in a several hour long heart racing session. I was sobbing by the end again and haven't stopped thinking about this story since I finished it. It isn't a crazy cliffhanger but there is definitely a lot left to this and I am anxiously awaiting the next book! I am WRECKED. Brittany Tucker is officially on my favorite author list and dare I say this might be in the running for best book of 2026 (even though it is my first of the year)!
Book 2 of the Revenant series, this novel takes us into the next segment of Camden and Annie’s story. And it is even more amazing than the first one! If you like a story with all the fantasy romance tropes like marriage of convenience, yearning, forced proximity, and he falls first but she falls harder, this fantasy is for you. But this story is also for those who love gothic and dark fantasy set in a Victorian setting. This novel has political intrigue that illustrates the worst effects of corrupted power. Further, the magic system is unique, combining elemental magic with mutant-like superpowers reminiscent of the X-men, like a Victorian X-men! Indeed, this series has the makings of a captivating fantasy series. But at the heart of it all, this character-driven story immerses you in the struggles of its main characters and their fight to overcome trauma and grief. Both Annie and Camden fight to save each other, to save the ones they love, and to save the humanity that lives beneath the rubble of painful memories. This novel is about healing and empowerment, about finding power in survival. As the narrative chronicles the challenges that Camden and Annie face, it also highlights love’s healing power and that’s love in all forms - familial, platonic, and romantic. Absolutely one of my favorite reads of 2025 and one of my favorite series of all time!!!
OH MY GOD!!! Qué acabo de leer??? No puedo con tantas emociones, en serio porfavor si tienen la oportunidad de leer esta saga DO IT!!! Lloré, me reí, GRITÉ, de todo
Yes. Just, yes. I cried, I cringed, I smiled.. it was an absolute rollercoaster! It was also leaps and bounds better than the first book, and the first novel was already fantastic! I loved how Annie and Cam's relationship deepened slowly and how their past traumas fed into their communications. I love how Cam is such a badass until Annie is involved and then he becomes a marshmallow *a homicidal marshmallow, but that's neither here nor there* I love that Cam cares about people enough under his guise and mask that he does end up developing relationships with people like Price, despite their past experiences. I also LOVE Alexander's arc throughout the story. That was the part that made me cry. Tucker is amazing at throwing little twists in where I could never have guessed it would happen. Koodos! The next installment was set up so perfectly. I will be waiting with bated breath for its drop!
This book is EVERYTHING I want in a romance. Oh my goodness. I swear I blushed and got butterflies and cried. It’s so good. Our FMC and MMC torture us for 50% of the book with this incredible slow burn and it’s beyond words. Add in the fantasy element of magic, sold. The plot is well done and the story isn’t overly complicated, like some romantasies I’ve read. There is enough going on to keep you hooked, but not so much too overwhelm. The dynamics of all the character interactions is also done to just the right level. Book one was not a five star for me but was absolutely worth reading to get to this gem. Amazing!
"He didn’t wield fire—he was fire, in the flesh—and he wanted his damn wife back."
I thoroughly enjoyed The Calamities of Camden Callahan but Brittany has OUTDONE herself with this one. I loved every second of this one and I'm just so in love with these characters so much. Cam and Annie have so much depth and intrigue and it's been the best journey watching them learn more about each, and I can't wait for more of that in the third book. Annie is so strong and Cam is her deadly golden retriever, I live them so much 🥹 Our non main characters are no less interesting, we have a host of various people who all have so much personality and one specifically is so incredibly interesting and well-written. The ongoing plotline and politics of Revenants and 'normal' people is so cool and I've loved watching it unfold and theorising already for the next book. I've enjoyed all of Brittany's books so far but you can really see how she's grown more comfortable and confident in what she's doing and you can really feel that come across in this books. I absolutely recommend this series if you like the sound of a dark YA fantasy with pirate vibes. *arc review*
Trying to figure out how to process the emotional damage this book did to me! The first word that comes to mind is wow! Such an incredible written story and book 2 was just as good as book 1!
The characters in the story continue to grab your heart! Camden and Annie’s characters are portrayed so well. The yearning had my heart racing at certain parts. You get to see Camden and Annie both work through the trauma they have had to endure and find out how not to survive, but live. I also loved all the secondary characters and their storylines. I loved that you got to see how the other characters stories unravel without having it told from their personal POVs. Mr. Price’s redemption and character growth is one of my favorites. The banter between him and Camden is pretty funny. You get an additional POV of Alexander, Camdens father. This was such a critical piece of the story and done beautifully.
Pirates 🏴☠️ Love ❤️ Betrayal 💔 Survival 💪🏻 Political unrest 📝 A unique magic system 🪄👻🔥
What else could you want in a book? Thank you SO much for letting me be an ARC reader. I truly loved these two books!
This book by far blew me away! I loved the first book, but the second?! Even better! I loved the additional perspectives from other characters, the plot twists and the mystery. It did end on a small cliff hanger, but at the same time wrapped up the story nicely. Moments between Annie and Cam made me swoon and seeing the stories between side characters was so fun too! It felt fully fleshed out and truly immersive! Can’t wait for the next one!
5 Stars The Dilemmas of a Dead Man’s Daughter by Brittany Tucker had me grinding my teeth, kicking my feet, and perching on the very edge of my chair. Cam’s self-control is a special kind of torture. This is the slowest of slow burns, and yet the way their relationship is built feels almost unforgivable in how deeply it pulls you in. I adored the flashes of jealousy from Annie and Cam’s constant teasing, even as both of them stubbornly hide their feelings in the name of protection—convinced that silence is the “right” thing to do. Two people shaped by tragedy, both believing they are undeserving of love? Beautiful. Infuriating. Agonizing. For the love of God, Camden, JUST KISS HER. The plot is tightly structured and well written, picking up only weeks after the previous book. The interwoven subplots are just as compelling as the character growth, and getting deeper glimpses into Cam’s past only made me appreciate his easy charm more. He has run, fallen, grown, and conquered—yet still walks the line between hero and villain when the moment demands it. What sets Cam apart from so many fictional men I adore is his transparency. He wears his heart openly, loves fiercely, and protects relentlessly. He keeps his promises. He shows up. He is a good man, however, he would not hesitate to pull the trigger if it meant keeping his people safe. I didn’t expect to enjoy Alexander’s chapters so much, but seeing both sides of the coin added so much depth and complexity to the story that I couldn’t help but love the choice. Honestly, the way Brittany Tucker makes me love and loathe Alexander at the same time should be illegal. This book is an emotional roller coaster. One moment I’m giggling and kicking my feet; the next my heart is racing. Then I’m in awe, then holding back tears moments later. Annie’s pain hit especially hard. I wanted to grab Cam and scream that none of this is his fault, that she needs time. Time she was never given. Her instinct to heal and constantly put others before herself because no one was ever there to save her just broke me. She is achingly strong. Delving deeper into her backstory shattered me. For such an easy character to love, it was devastating to witness everything she endured. I also loved the political intrigue, especially the painfully real reminder that those with the most power are often the most evil. The blend of court politics, medicine, and unique magic made the story feel unsettling… like a reflection of a world we already live in. Brittany Tucker is an exceptional storyteller. She sinks her characters’ claws into you, making you feel as though you know them, love them, and ensuring they stay with you long after the final page.
🧭ARC Review🪝 After reading this book, Brittany Tucker could write a manual on how to crack an egg and I would push people out of the way to get my hands on it. Her writing is THAT good and The Dilemmas of a Dead Man’s Daughter is no exception.
I read book one (The Calamities of Camden Callahan) a couple months ago and was immediately sucked in by the storyline and characters. It was unlike anything I had read before, I couldn’t get it out of my head! Because of that my expectations for The Dilemmas of a Dead Man’s Daughter were already high. Not only were they met, they were completely blown out of the water! I have read 98 books this year and THIS is my favorite!
It has everything you could want, yearning, romance, found family, action, mystery, magic, if you can think of it Brittany included it.
This book had me laughing one minute, to biting my finger nails with anticipation, to sobbing the next. And by sobbing I don’t mean a tear or two down my cheek, I mean mascara stains on my pillow, can barely read the next sentence, kind of sobbing. And I loved EVERY second of it!!
The new characters were incredible and I really liked how she continued to develop the ones we met in book one. Especially Julian!
I also loved how this book grew Annie and Camden’s relationship. The way they grew a friendship first and leaned on each other to help work through their past trauma was beautiful. While Annie worked to find her own voice, Camden used his to keep her safe (and maybe cause chaos along the way, you know as Camden does.) The yearning from Cam, the fear from Annie. Working together, protecting each other, supporting each other. It was amazing to read.
The biggest surprise of this book for me? (Besides the many plot twists you will never see coming)
I LOVED Alexander’s chapters. I thought his chapters were going to be another “the villain’s” viewpoint kind of thing. They were so much more, DON’T skip them!!!
As a matter of fact don’t you dare skip a single word of this book. I am already burning with anticipation for book 3!!😍
To sum this up: Watch out RY, I may have just found my new favorite author! This book series deserves to be the next big thing, and Brittany definitely needs a trophy for her writing, or a medal, or both? Definitely both!
She glared. That was just like him. Always teasing and making playful jokes, yet never getting too close. Always keeping a safe distance. Never pushing past where he thought she might run.
She wasn't stupid. She knew what he was doing—testing waters that both of them were too afraid to travel.
Sometimes, though, she wished he'd be brave for her.
Thank you to Brittany Tucker for the ebook version of this novel to review!
The Dilemmas of a Dead Man's Daughter by Brittany Tucker is book two in the Revenant Series and wow is it a great addition to an already strong start in a fantasy romance series! Whereas the first novel was largely concerned with getting Camden and Annie into the same place and giving them something they could both work together towards, book two in the series is all about that chemistry. And does it sizzle (no pun intended). While the book is a solid 2 on the spicy scale (kissing and some implied intimacy), the way that Camden and Annie's relationship develops is a slow and steady climb toward an all-consuming inferno. I really can't stop with the fire jokes, I'm sorry.
While the toxic family dynamic of Camden's relationship with his father begins, and to a degree remains, a strain on the characters, it only serves to heighten the emotional intensity of the narrative. Child abuse is mentioned, along with previous SA trauma for Annie, so be aware of that going into the book. It's not so severe that it's not worth getting through the tough content to see what happens as a result. Both Annie and Camden have PTSD/CPTSD in the worst way, but seeing them grow through their relationship is very satisfying.
If you like pirate, pyros, BAMF female main characters, yearning that is out of this world, and the glowing satisfaction of revenge, The Dilemmas of a Dead Man's Daughter is all of those things are more. If I had to summarize it? It's Pirates of the Caribbean meets Avatar: The Last Airbender, if they had a ménage à trois with a revenge tragedy. High stakes and higher emotions abound!
The Dilemmas of a Dead Man’s Daughter leans hard into the kind of YA dark fantasy that doesn’t let its characters heal quietly. This is a sequel built on forward motion: the South is burning, the past is catching up, and Camden Callahan is done running. From the jump, the story promises heat, ghosts, and consequences, then funnels that chaos toward a single combustible destination—Enoch, the western stronghold where Cam’s estranged father (the Governor) waits like a reckoning. What makes the setup work is how personal the stakes are. Cam isn’t simply traveling into enemy territory; he’s walking back into the house fire of his own history. The synopsis frames Enoch as a city engineered for control— “built on secrets,” hostile to Revenants, and eager to punish “the Governor’s disgraced son.” That layered threat (politics + prejudice + family violence) is exactly the kind of pressure cooker that can turn a fantasy adventure into something with bite. Just as compelling is Annie’s arc. The book doesn’t treat trauma as set dressing: Annie’s “chains are gone,” but the scars, nightmares, and survival memories remain—complicating her growing feelings for Cam while the dead try to warn her about what’s lurking inside Enoch’s power structure. The best dark fantasy romances do this well: they let intimacy feel earned, not convenient, and they allow fear and desire to share the same page. Then there’s the wider menace—the mysterious Order “pulling the city’s strings” and hunting again as bodies pile up. That’s a classic escalation move for book two: widen the conspiracy, tighten the net, and force the characters to realize the monster isn’t only outside the walls—it may be wearing the city’s uniform. If you like YA fantasy with heavy atmosphere, conspiracy vibes, and characters forged by brutal circumstances, this is the book for you. For a follow-up story in the Revenant series, this was a fantastic follow-up.
The Dilemmas of a Dead Man's Daughter is the riveting sequel to the Calamities of Camden Callahan. Mild spoilers for book one throughout this review. (Don't want book one spoiled? Read my spoiler free review for Calamities on GR or my blog.)
After leaving New Havana, Annie and Camden come face to face with old traumas, new powers, and a new relationship dynamic. Brittany Tucker does a wonderful job of weaving in healing, burnouts, and the absolute turmoil of existing after trauma.
The characters are unlikable at times – though never enough to hate, just enough to be realistic. While our two main characters fight for and against each other, you'll find your knuckles turning white as you plead with them to just figure it out already.
Also, talk about a SLOW BURN! This has to be one of my favorite tropes, but in this book especially it's a necessary plot element. The author gently explores two very broken people who have been hurt, and simultaneously are afraid of hurting the person they care about most.
I LOVE the exploration of Cam and Annie's powers and their unusual draw to each other… Though, Brittany, I have QUESTIONS! The book leaves their full abilities yet to be discovered though it drops some hints about Annie's magical origins that I hope will be explored later.
I also fully enjoyed the introduction of each and every new character, and fell a bit in love with some who would break my heart by the end.
Once again I have to compliment the worldbuilding in this series as far as setting, magic system, social classes, cults, characters, and piracy.
Honestly, I'm sad that I finished it because I really enjoyed being swept away into Cam & Annie's world of darkness and adventure.
I highly recommend this book… just make sure you read Calamities first!
The Dilemmas of a Dead Man’s Daughter by Brittany Tucker pulled me in with a quiet kind of courage and kept me turning pages with its emotional depth and sense of adventure. There’s something beautifully tender about the way this story balances grief and discovery-how loss becomes not just an ending, but a doorway
I loved how the protagonist’s journey feels both intimate and daring. Each dilemma carries weight, yet there’s a softness in the storytelling that makes even the hardest moments feel honest and human. The author has a gift for creating scenes that linger, inviting you to sit with the emotions while still nudging you forward into the unknown.
Chapter 45, in particular, stayed with me. It felt like a pause in the story where everything unspoken finally breathes-a moment of clarity, vulnerability, and quiet bravery that deepens the entire journey. It’s one of those chapters you reread, not because it’s loud or dramatic, but because it feels true.
What stood out most to me was the sense of resilience woven throughout the story. It’s sweet without being naive, adventurous without losing its heart. By the end, I felt like I hadn’t just read a story-I’d walked alongside a character learning how to be brave in a world forever changed.
This is a book for anyone who enjoys thoughtful journeys, emotional growth, and a touch of adventure that unfolds quietly but powerfully. Brittany Tucker has crafted a story that stays with you long after the final page.
Picking up right where the high-stakes maritime action of the first book left off, this book shifts the focus from the open sea to the murky, political waters of Enoch, the stronghold of the West. Cam is no longer running. Accompanied by Annie, he sails toward Enoch to confront the one man he hates most: his father, the Governor. Cam is seeking the truth behind his mother’s death, but as a Revenant, he is viewed as a monster in a city that prizes order and secrets. Meanwhile, Annie is battling the ghosts of her own past. Though her physical chains are gone, she is haunted by nightmares and the spirits of the dead, who attempt to warn her of a shadowy organization known as The Order that is pulling the strings behind Enoch's political elite. The slow-burn romance between Cam and Annie is put to the test. Annie’s struggle with her trauma is portrayed with raw honesty, making their growing feelings feel earned rather than forced. Enoch feels claustrophobic and dangerous, filled with twisted politics and hidden enemies. The introduction of The Order adds a psychological thriller layer to the elemental fantasy, keeping you guessing about who can actually be trusted. It successfully raises the stakes by moving from a survival story to a complex political conspiracy. The first book was about Cam finding his power and this book is about Cam and Annie finding their place in a world that fears them.
Wow. The first book blew me away, but this one? I love so much in an entirely different way. You start to understand the characters better, their behaviors and reactions to things. The character development in this book felt so much more personal. I loved Cam and Annie’s journey in the first one, seeing them become more vulnerable with each other, while also developing more strength within themselves- incredibly powerful.
We learn a lot about Cam’s complex relationship with his father, Annie’s personal demon’s, and Cam’s battle with himself. The way that each character leans on one another, honestly made me teary eyed a few times.
Cam and Annie’s relationship felt very real. His patience with her, allowing her to give what she is able to. He understood that there were things in her life she experienced that he wouldn’t be able to comprehend. He took the time and the knowledge to help her destroy those who’ve harmed her. His dedication to her was deeply felt throughout. They are strong together and on their own. I enjoyed getting to peel back the layers in this book.
Also incredibly happy that Jenny has found happiness outside of her past trauma, the moment she shares with Annie felt so special, that it’s okay to live and to love. Regardless of what they went through, in spite of what they went through. I can’t wait to see what lies ahead for all of them.

The Dilemmas of a Dead Man’s Daughter by Brittany Tucker is a thrilling young adult dark fantasy that propels readers deeper into the Revenant world introduced in its series. The story picks up with Camden Callahan and Annie fleeing the burning South, pursued by both literal and figurative ghosts of their past. Their journey leads them to Enoch, a city riddled with political machinations and secrets—especially those surrounding Cam’s estranged father, the Governor, who may hold truths about Annie’s mother’s death. As they confront internal scars and external threats, the pair must navigate the complex politics of a city that views Revenants with suspicion while evading a mysterious Order hunting them both.
Tucker’s novel is rich with action, supernatural intrigue, and emotional depth, blending fast-paced adventure with the protagonists’ inner struggles. Readers have praised the book for its engrossing worldbuilding and high stakes, noting that the interplay of suspense, political tension, and budding relationships keeps the narrative engaging from start to finish. While anchored in typical YA fantasy themes—identity, trust, and confronting past traumas—the story distinguishes itself with layered conflicts and a vivid, perilous setting that will satisfy fans of character-driven fantasy.
This is the second book in the Revenant Series. This is a dark fantasy adventure with actions and so many twists and turns. It doesn't feel like a big book as the story is gripping so the pages turn themselves. I do recommend reading these books in order so that you get the full picture of our characters and their paths and how they come to find themselves where they are now.
We are back with our characters as they return to Cam's home of Enoch. He wants to return to get revenge for his mother's death which he blames his father for. On returning to Enoch he finds a place in turmoil and danger as they don't want anything to do with Revenants. Cam's father wants Cam to help him show the people that everyone can live in harmony but can that be possible with secrets, lies and betrayal hiding around every corner.
Annie and Cam are now married but it's a marriage of convenience. Or is it? The closer Cam and Annie get the more the realise that they seem to be just what the other needs to keep calm and stable but will either of them admit it to the other person? After all the trauma Annie has gone through will she be able to fully trust Cam?
This is a action packed story but at times it is heartbreaking. The authors writing had me so invested in the characters and their journey and their struggles that I couldn't put the book down.
Action? Acceptance? Romance? Mass Murder? Deceit? Cultists?
Everything and everyone is connected in this continuation from book 1. Annie and Camden along with Julian Price, Nathan and Jenny, travel to the West to finish what they started and to start anew after the chaos in New Havana.
There was even MORE deception and manipulation in this novel but, we also learn so much more about the world that Camden was born into and all the corruption that seems to be lurky just under the skin. Despite all the crime and death that happens upon arriving to Enoch, there are more friends, family and enemies that we met that make it even MORE action packed.
I loved learning more about Camden and Annie’s new abilities and how they play off of one another. Cam is definitely smitten with Annie and Annie is slow to catch up to his feelings. We got to see more of Jenny’s personality flourish away from the Duskins and we got to meet some friends that I honestly really enjoyed their additions to the story.
I haven’t read such an action packed YA in a while and I love that it really edged more of the dark side of it. I enjoyed every second of it and will hopefully get physical copies soon for my rereading pleasure.
The Dilemmas of a Dead Man’s Daughter is a dark, magical adventure that completely pulls you in. This is book two in the Revenant series, and it somehow manages to be even better than the first, which I also loved. The story moves smoothly, the characters shine, and the pages fly by faster than expected. It is full of secrets, danger, magic, politics, pirates, and plenty of twists that keep you guessing.
Cam and Annie are the heart of this book. They are strong, flawed, and deeply human, and watching them heal together is honestly beautiful. Their connection is quiet, supportive, and powerful without being perfect, which made it feel real. The yearning, forced proximity, and emotional tension had me hooked the entire time.
The setting, political intrigue, and unique magic system add so much depth to the story. At its core, this is a character driven book about trauma, grief, survival, and learning how to truly live again.
The side characters are just as memorable, with strong arcs and great banter. Mr. Price’s growth was a standout.
If you enjoy dark fantasy with romance, emotional depth, pirate vibes, and unexpected twists, this series is absolutely worth reading. So far everything I have read from this author is great, this being no exception!
The Dilemmas of a Dead Man's Daughter (A Revenant #2) by Brittany Tucker
This isn't the first book I've read by the author. The author has once again outdone themselves on this book. You will need to read the first book in the series to understand anything in this book. This will take you on adventures you didn't think you were going on.
Camden is back with Annie, Jenny, and Nate. This time though they're heading back to his hometown so he can get the answers he's been needing since he was little. His mom's death has bugged him his entire life and now he's marrying Annie. He gave her his mom's ring that his Captain gave him on his birthday one year. He says this to Annie after pulling his head out of his butt: “You and me. Until the stars fall or time takes us away. Even then.”
Annie is back and this time she's Annie Callahan. The Annie she was behind on the island is no longer around and she has found that her power can also heal. So when things go south towards the end she does just that. Now she is Lady Callahan. She tells Cam this: “I’m not. Because the Annie I was before I met you is dead. She died below New Havana and never came out of those caverns.”
WOW! The plot twists in this book, the character development— which was already amazing in the first book— just blew me away. This book was beautiful. I cried, I got excited, I doubted everything and everyone. This is the third book by Brittany that I’ve read, and I just love the way she makes us connect with the characters, with the story. Highly recommended!
I also want to mention how original and realistic the characters are: most of them live in these shades of gray, just like real human beings. Nobody’s perfect… not even Jenny ;)
I loved how the main characters evolve despite the heavy trauma they’ve been through, and how, through that, they learn to value themselves, accept who they are, and embrace their differences with others. I also really enjoyed seeing how their relationship grows tighter as they each heal individually, but also how being together helps them heal old wounds.
And Cam’s sense of humor… I LOVE it!
----
WOW!
I enjoyed reading this darker fantasy story from beginning to end. I enjoy how this author used creative details to make this story feel realistic. I also enjoyed their writing skills that brought the character’s journey to a new level. This is a well written story about Annie and Cam. They are sailing to Enoch. The problem is that Enoch is that it is not only full of secrets but also where Cam’s father lives. Annie has a past full of memories and they have stayed with her. As the story goes the dead send warnings and as the bodies pile up something darker comes to the surface. What happens to these two is something you don’t want to miss. I enjoyed how engaging all the characters are. They are also strong and kept me turning pages fast to find out more. I enjoyed what they added to the story and how easy it is to read. There is great growth of the characters as well as the plot throughout. I found this book to be fast paced and hard to put down. This is such a great story to read and I highly recommend it.
This book is the sequel to *The Calamities of Camden Callahan*, so it’s best to read that first. I have a love-hate relationship with how much of a slow burn this story was, because wow, it was definitely a SLOW BURN. That said, the pacing felt necessary, as the characters are deeply damaged and hurting, and the author takes her time developing not only Annie and Camden’s relationship but also their personal growth and healing. Heavy themes include protection, the lasting impact of trauma even after escaping abuse, and the belief that intimacy must be earned rather than given freely. The story balances grief, love, self-discovery, and adventure, all wrapped in the elements you’d expect from a gothic YA dark romance. Set in a Victorian world with a political twist involving the controlling “Order,” it features a magical system blending various supernatural elements in a way that feels fresh and unique. Altogether, it was an enjoyable read with a wide potential age range, and there’s clearly more to come from this author, so I’m excited to see where the story goes next.
Cam and his theatrics never disappoint. I was so happy to be back in this world! it! Brittany always creates MMCs that are more precious than I have words for. And the slow burn crazy tension between Cam and Annie is 🤌🏼. As usual, the found family is excellent. I also went through ALL of the emotions with this book. I was tearing up, excited, frustrated, screaming, all the things. With this being a longer book, I don't think it could have been told shorter. There was always something happening and every part of it served a purpose that would have taken away from the story if it wasn't included, and I flew through it regardless! I love this story so much and I feel like such a broad age range can read and enjoy it. There is also still so much to happen that I can't wait for! I'll just be waiting to gobble up all future books!
Thank you to the author for an early copy to read and review!
On the other side of fear is love, but what happens when you finally allow yourself to love? That's Annie and Camden's biggest question. Is their marriage of convenience more than it seems? Will fear win or will love? Who can you trust and who will destroy you with a handshake?
I didn't read the first book of this series and it will be on my TBR for next month. Even without reading the first book, there are enough context clues to figure out what happened in the first book and how it relates to this book. The relationship tension in this book is real! I found myself yelling just tell him…just tell her!
The one glaring issue I had when I first started reading this book was that it is set up as a POV, however, it's written in 3rd person not 1st person. Once I was able to wrap my head around the writing and narration, I flew through the pages. This is an entertaining read with deception, love, and duty.
I’m so happy to have received this as an arc! I also got the chance to read the first one but wanted to review this first as it was my arc read. But, I have to be honest I fell in love with the first book and thought it was my perfect read. It was so good and held my attention throughout its entirety so I was excited to read this and knew it was going to also be a good one. That was an understatement. This one was even better! It was immersive, the characters are all interesting (it didn’t feel like there wasn’t one I wouldn’t want to know more about), and it felt fleshed out completely. My favorite character being Annie and seeing her get to grown more into herself and finding a voice was such a joy! I’ve so many feelings and thoughts about this book and was beyond joyed to know that there will be a third book coming out. I have these on kindle but will be purchasing the physical copies because they’re just that good!
The Dilemmas of a Dead Man’s Daughter by Brittany Tucker completely pulled me in from the start. The world building is rich and immersive without ever feeling overwhelming—I felt like I was living inside the story rather than just reading it. Every detail added depth and atmosphere in a way that made the setting come alive.
The character building is just as strong. The characters feel layered, flawed, and real, and watching them grow over the course of the story was incredibly satisfying. Their emotions, choices, and struggles felt genuine, which made it easy to get invested in their journeys.
And the slow burn romance? Perfection. The tension builds naturally, with meaningful moments and emotional depth that made every interaction feel earned. Nothing felt rushed, and the payoff was so worth the wait.
This was a beautifully crafted story with heart, depth, and just the right amount of tension. Easily a 5-star read, and I can’t wait to read more from Brittany Tucker.
