I was immediately drawn in by the premise of Lilac, a mystery-suspense novel with a romance subplot. While this isn't usually a genre I gravitate toward, I am quite glad I gave it a chance. It is a captivating, emotionally resonant, and well-written debut.
The story follows the protagonist, Cosette, as she investigates and unravels the mystery surrounding her father's disappearance five years prior. The novel delves into universal themes of pain, love, and loss, those experiences that feel just as relevant to those in their 20s as they do to readers of any age.
One of the novel’s most striking elements is how Barton weaves flashbacks into the present-day narrative. Moments like these are a powerful way to explore grief and the lingering effects of loss, no matter how much time has passed. She handles these themes with such poignancy and tenderness that make the emotional depth of the story all the more impactful. While the plot could be slightly predictable at times, I don’t find that it takes away from anything, as there were also some moments that kept me guessing, leaving me curious as to what could possibly happen next.
Some bits I could do without, and at times I wanted to shout at Cosette, "DON'T DO IT! IT'S A TRAP!", though, moments like these were necessary for the plot. But overall, Lilac is a lovely, easy-to-follow, promising debut, and I look forward to seeing what A.A. Barton writes next!

We begin with the main character sitting in a café, alone, expecting a companion, with two cups of coffee served. However, as time passes and the coffee goes cold, no one shows up. This ominous start had me hooked instantly, with the events in the rest of the book circling it perfectly, complementing the writing and tone.
This is a mystery about Cosette Emory, a 23-year-old bartender who, after years of hearing consolations about her father's sudden disappearance, has decided to find her own way to the truth after being provoked by a mysterious letter left at her front door.
With trickles of romance, the extravaganza of parties of the rich society, and the suspense of the impending events, the book makes a perfect compelling mystery, but it is more than just that; it talks about the cryptic nature of financial laxity and economic disparity in society, and the mistreatment and exploitation of financially struggling workers.

Okay this book had me in a complete chokehold. I don’t normally love a mystery novel (I’m a romance girlie) but this book delivered.
Cosettes dad went missing without any clues as to what happened. It’s been 5 years and she wants answers, but is she ready for all she will uncover? Cosette quickly realizes there’s more to what happened than she ever could have imagined. Caught up in secrets and powerful people, Cosette will uncover more than she planned too and learns to live with her grief in the process.
A mystery served with a side of romance? IM IN. This debut novel was EVERYTHING. The writing was beautiful and the story had me flipping pages at midnight. You will want to scream at Cosette and also give her a hug 😭 I cried, I laughed, I was frustrated and mad and happy. This pulled out all the emotions. Don’t miss the release of this one!!

5 ⭐️ AMAZING! A cold case mystery with a side of romance.
This is a story with grief and a healing journey so beautifully written you will feel every emotion right along with Cosette. So many raw emotions and it was written so beautifully. The storyline was so unique and kept me engaged the entire time.

Wow! I could not put this book down. I was hooked from the very beginning. Had a little bit of romance, but it’s mostly a mystery that really keeps you guessing. I really loved it and will recommend this to everyone!

Was honored to be a beta reader for this book, and it is soooo good. The writing is stunning, the mystery hooks you, and the romantic subplot keeps you turning the pages even if it’s 3am (trust me I lost sleep over this book)

This book was SO freaking good. I’m typically a romance girlie, but when I saw this was a mystery with a romance subplot, I thought, ‘let’s give it a try’—and wow, did it deliver! Let’s start with the romance because GIRL. You now have me waiting for a full-blown romance novel from you because you clearly know how to write a sexy CEO. 👀 Now back to the mystery because that’s where this book really shines.
Cosette is our FMC whose father vanished five years ago, and she’s finally ready to dig for answers. What she uncovers is a web of secrets, family ties, and past investigations that pull her deeper into a dangerous truth. She teams up with a PI her family hired years ago, and together they try to unravel her father’s disappearance—while Cosette deals with still trying to navigate her own grief and start to learn what moving forward really means. As someone who has experienced the grief of losing a parent, this hit me so hard. The way Burton writes about Cosette’s grief, and how it continues to change over time even five years later, is so raw and beautifully done.
This author can WRITE. I still cannot believe this is only a debut, because it felt polished, emotional, and perfectly paced. A.A. Burton is officially on my auto-buy list. Can’t wait to see what she does next!

Rounded up- 4.5 Stars!!!!
Cosette Emory is haunted by the disappearance of her father 5 years ago. She has spent these years not questioning what happened, except on the day that he disappears. Then she goes to a local diner and has 2 coffees- one for her, and one for her father. This was where they were supposed to meet for lunch that long ago day, but he never showed up.
Oh. My, Gosh!!! This book was fantastic. A cold case mystery, a hint of romance (but still mostly mystery). and main character that was real and authentic.
Colette goes home from the diner, and later finds a letter slipped under her door telling her to ask questions about her father. She does not recognize the name of the person who sent it. She decides that she needs to look into this and try to get answers and begins by asking her aunt if she knows what this is about. From there the story and clues ratchet up.
The writing is lovely, and Colette is relatable. I found myself hurting for her, and wanting the answers too. She has no closure, so there is a pain that simply exists all the time. As she begins investigating, she finds ties to high society. She is drawn to parties and events and finds shocking information about what was really happening in her father's life and in his job. She begins to question who she can trust.
The supporting characters were fantastic. Aunt Billie, Esther (her best friend) and even Dylan (the new guy she has met). Each of them add important support to Nellie. While she is investigating, she finally opens up and lets herself feel the loss and the grief. IT is an astounding debut novel, and I could not put this book down. There was mystery, intrigue, found family, loss and hope. And throughout the book you are rooting for Colette not only to find out what happened, but to also be able to move forward and get healing. I cannot recommend this book enough. It is shocking that his is a debut!
Highly recommend for anyone looking for a deep, intelligent, emotional mystery with well rounded characters and heart! I cannot wait to read AA Barton's next book!!!

As Cosette starts digging into her father’s disappearance, the story pulls her into the polished but dangerous world of Chicago’s elite. What looks elegant and controlled on the surface hides secrets, corruption, and people who will do anything to protect their reputations. Every answer she uncovers only leads to more questions, and the deeper she goes, the more she realizes how little she truly knew about her father and the people around him.
What makes this book so strong is how emotional it feels. The mystery is gripping, but it is Cosette’s grief, confusion, and determination that really drive the story. She is not fearless or detached. She doubts herself, makes mistakes, and carries the weight of years of unanswered questions. That makes her feel real. This is Barton’s debut novel, and I hope and pray there will be (many) more! The writing was clear, concise, and witty. Character development was impeccable and made it easy to connect with them. The story line was well thought out and easy to follow, even through the twists and turns!
I felt a special connection to Colette having lost my mother to cancer, and I found myself empathizing with her on many occasions. The lilac was one of my mother’s favorite flowers, as well. One of my favorite quotes is “you can’t fully grieve someone you never got to say goodbye to.”
I am a huge fan of mysteries and thrillers, and Lilac ticked all the boxes for me: mystery, intrigue, murder, humanity, and a little bit of love. Oh, and LOTS of surprises! I caught myself gasping out loud several times! And I promise you - if you think you know how the story is going to end … you do not!!!!
I loved every minute of this book - the story, the characters (even the ones I hated!), the writing…. When I was about halfway through, I realized I didn’t want the book to end, but at the same time, I couldn’t wait to find out how it ends! I admit that I even delayed writing a review because I felt that I would be letting go of the characters, and I was just not ready to do that.
I would recommend Lilac to anyone who is looking for a well-written mystery with an ending you may not expect.

“Lilac” is the first self-published novel I’ve ever read, and I’m happy to say it was a good debut.
A.A. Barton delivers a compelling story centered on Cosette Emory, whose father mysteriously disappeared five years ago. When a new piece of evidence surfaces, Cosette is pulled back into the search for answers—this time with renewed hope and determination.
I was genuinely excited to read this book. Barton’s writing style is smooth and cinematic, making it easy to visualize scenes as if watching a film. Cosette, the main character, feels relatable and realistic, and her emotional journey kept me engaged throughout.
Although the novel is primarily a suspense story, I found the romantic subplot surprisingly dominant—it drew more of my attention than expected. I personally chose to skip the spicy scenes, as they don’t align with my values, but they were easy to bypass without losing the thread of the story. While the thriller elements felt somewhat predictable, I still found myself worrying about Cosette and her aunt’s safety, which speaks to the emotional investment the story creates.
One character who frustrated me was Cosette’s friend Esther. I questioned many of her decisions and found her romantic choices reckless. As for Dylan, the MMC, he came across as almost too perfect—but I still found him quite charming.

Compelling, compulsive, and quietly showing off
“Lilac” had me from the first page. The opening scene is unusual enough to snap your attention straight into place, while also making it very clear that this book has no interest in doing things the safe or predictable way.
Which, frankly, is excellent news for the reader.
Yes, I worked out the plot, antagonists, and general story arc fairly early on — and no, that didn’t matter one bit. This is one of those novels where the how is every bit as satisfying as the what. The writing is confident and polished, the characterisation is pitch-perfect, and the setting consistently delivers exactly the atmosphere each scene requires.
The depiction of grief — particularly Cosette’s — is handled with real skill: expressive, emotionally honest, and never overwhelming. “Lilac” had me from the first page. The opening scene is unusual enough to snap your attention straight into place, while also making it very clear that this book has no interest in doing things the safe or predictable way.
Which, frankly, is excellent news for the reader.
Yes, I worked out the plot, antagonists, and general story arc fairly early on — and no, that didn’t matter one bit. This is one of those novels where the how is every bit as satisfying as the what. The writing is confident and polished, the characterisation is pitch-perfect, and the setting consistently delivers exactly the atmosphere each scene requires.
The depiction of grief — particularly Cosette’s — is handled with real skill: expressive, emotionally honest, and never overwhelming. I was lucky enough to be selected as a Beta reader for this debut author. Lilac hooked me right from the jump with its mystery-suspense vibes with a little sprinkle of romance mixed in. This debut is emotional and hooks you rather early on, I found myself not being able to put it down.
We follow Cosette as she digs into the five-year-old disappearance of her father. Barton takes us through several themes: grief, love, and loss. The flashbacks are where Barton really pulled me in. They add in that emotional gut punch that reminds you that grief is an universal language that we all speak.
Cosette as a main, made me remember my 20s and there were times I found myself yelling at her through the page, "Cosette, get it together lady!" Yes, a few plot points were predictable, but some of those reveals still had me gasping—and that’s saying something, because after a lifetime of devouring every episode of Law & Order: SVU, I fully consider myself a detective at heart.
Barton delivers a super promising debut. I’ll definitely be keeping an eye on whatever A.A. Barton does next.

On the anniversary of her father’s disappearance, Cosette receives a letter stating that there’s more to it than she realizes, so she turns to her aunt for help. Before his passing, her uncle was investigating what happened to her father with a private investigator, Remy. He is hesitant to help Cosette because of who is connected to her father’s case, but maybe the FBI will be able to assist them? Cosette is determined to uncover the truth, even after she is being threatened. While she is dealing with this, she also is handling the realization of who Dylan is. She met him while bartending, and they instantly had a connection; what if he too has ties to her father’s disappearance, and how can she trust that he doesn’t? I was worried about Esther because of her connections, but I’m glad she ended up being the best friend possible for Cosette. Remy might be my favorite character, especially because he kept showing up. I didn’t see the reveal coming. The writing of this story was so descriptive, and readers felt the loss Cosette was going through. I’m excited for what’s to come from A.A. Barton: this is such a good debut.

What an extraordinary debut from A. A. Barton. From the very first page, her prose pulls you in—haunting, atmospheric, and beautifully written. The mystery unfolds in a way that keeps you constantly guessing, layering tension, suspense, and unanswered questions into a story that feels deeply intimate and emotionally resonant. At the heart of it all is a powerful emotional core. The themes of lust, loss, inequality, and injustice aren’t merely present—they’re felt, woven so seamlessly into the narrative that you experience them right alongside Cosette. I became genuinely attached to the characters, invested not only in the resolution of the mystery but in their heartbreaks, hopes, and the choices they’re forced to make.
The ending landed perfectly for me—devastating, satisfying, and impossible to shake. I laughed, I cried, and I truly could not put this book down. A. A. Barton has officially earned a permanent spot on my TBR list, and I sincerely hope she has many more stories in store, because I cannot wait to devour whatever she writes next!

It had me hooked from beginning to end, It’s at mystery novel.
Cosette lost both her parents and many years have passed her mother passed from illness and no answers to her father’s disappearance.. she was left with her aunt & uncle but her uncle passed not longer after father so she was left with her aunt to take on full responsibility while grieving all three.
She never understood why she didn’t get answers to her father’s disappearance until she meets a handsome gentleman Dylan who starts to come into her bar where she works. When Dylan mustered up the courage to ask Cosette out and they extend there date into more. She learns who he is and maybe there is more to the disappearance than was revealed.
Cosette starts doing some digging to get the closure she and her aunt so desperately need but when she finds herself digging more than she should.. the past comes back with vengeance..
definitely give this book a read you won’t be disappointed!

This is a stray from my preferred genre of literary fiction. Upon coming across the title and cover on NetGalley I thought that was what this was. Something about the cover screams “young adult, big city, inner turmoil.” Of course I read the description and learned it was a cold case crime story and was intrigued enough to request an ARC.
The actual crime component of the story was ok. I think Barton’s strength was her understanding of grief and her ability to communicate it. There were some really lovely moments in the book when Cosette was reflecting on her life with her parents.
I also appreciate this wasn’t a “and they lived happily ever after” love story. I was worried the story was going to go there and I couldn’t fathom any author making it believable.
All in all, an entertaining read. I’d pick up another title from this author.

I am amazed that this is a debut novel because it reads like a seasoned thriller author wrote this book. There is a subplot of romance, but the mystery/thriller aspects of this book are what initially drew me to want to give it a try. I had no idea all of the emotions I would feel as I read about the grief felt and trauma experienced by the FMC.
The FMC’s father goes missing, and then years later she receives a mysterious note that causes her to question everything. The powerful elite have power, status, and secrets they must maintain if they want the past to remain in the past. Our FMC is going to do everything she can to expose the truth.
This book was well written, the characters and plot were well developed, and the authors ability to make readers FEEL was truly incredible. PLEASE PICK UP this book. You will not be disappointed, I promise!

A.A. Barton's debut novel Lilac, was such a suspense-filled read.
I could not be more amazed by this novel, especially with it being a debut. I am so beyond excited to read more by A.A. Barton. Cosette's father goes missing, and 5 years later, she receives a letter that opens the case back up.
With lots of twists and turns, your mind is constantly trying to figure out who did what. Whenever you think you have it figured out, there is another plot twist, and you are wrong. I love reading novels that do this. It continues to grab my attention and keep me interested for the long haul. I love all the characters.
Are we going to get a sequal? Maybe Cosette can continue working on other cases? Her character grows throughout the book in many ways. You will be in suspense, you will get emotional, you will be disappointed. I love it when you can feel the emotions the characters feel, because you are invested in the story.

As a girl who lost her dad at the same age as Cosette, reading this hit hard.
That being said, it hit hard because the emotion I felt from Cosette was so real. I appreciated the resilience Cosette embodied and the story building between her, her family, and their memories. The writing itself was well done, emotional, and at times, intense. There was also a large element of mystery throughout the story, which made it an engaging read. It almost read to me like a Frida McFadden book, but with much more heart and strong characterization.

I was initially very excited by the premise of this book, girl seeking justice over her father’s unsolved murder. I was aware of the romance subplot but felt that the two did not coexist well together. I felt like the first 3rd really focused on the case, the second part focused on the romance, and then it all came crashing down. I wish there would have been more mystery and less open door romance (which may be unpopular)
I was disappointed by the interactions between Cosette and Esther because it seemed like the majority of their interactions were about sex appeal/appealing to men/being too loose.
It was a very quick read which I always appreciate, but this one was just not for me.

This is why you should read self-published books! I loved this. ‘Lilac’ is a compelling crime story packed full of emotion, clear characterisation, and heart. Cosette’s complex ties to her father’s disappearance involve her in the city’s elite. She shows resolve, morality, and will in her pursuit of truth and justice. Her relationships with her aunt, friends, and Dylan were all so well-done - I particularly enjoyed the romance sub-plot, which is something I’m not usually a fan of. I was so pulled in from the off and couldn’t put this book down.

This book will ALWAYS have a special place in my heart. I started this book when my dad’s health started to decline. Reading a book about a daughter’s bravery trying to find out the truth behind her father’s disappearance was what I needed during this time. This book brought me comfort seeing how Cosette fought for her father & regardless to the outcome of the struggle of finding out the truth, a daughter’s love for her father will always prevail. My father unfortunately passed away 11/13. But reading about Cosette’s dedication to her father reminded me so much of myself and what I went through these past few months with my own dad. I cannot wait to read more from this AMAZING author!

Lilac was a book I found myself putting down and picking back up several times. The story itself is good, and the premise is genuinely brilliant. The cover is also one of my favourites I’ve come across—it immediately drew me in.
However, even with such a strong concept, I personally struggled to stay fully hooked. It took a while for me to really get into the story, and my engagement wavered throughout.

Lilac is haunting, emotional, and beautifully written. I was completely drawn into Cosette’s search for the truth about her father’s disappearance. The blend of grief, mystery, and high-society secrets kept me turning pages late into the night. A.A. Barton captures the ache of loss and the danger of uncovering buried truths so vividly. Definitely one of those reads that stays with you long after the last page.

I did not expect to like this book as much as I did! The FMC reminded me of a friend that we all have that we get frustrated with, want to scream at, and are annoyed by but you always are there riding for her and backing her up. She may be frustrating but you love her and she is your frustration. I loved the blend of the romance and mystery. I thought it kept it interesting in more ways. When I would want a change of pace it was there. I loved this book and it was so well written.

This novel had me completely hooked. I truly couldn’t put it down. The author did a great job with the pacing of the story. I was very invested in Cosette’s grief journey. She has been through it, and her explanation of guilt, sadness, and anger coexisting really resonated for me in my own grief journey. I’m from the Midwest and loved all the references to the area. This was a great read, add it to your list. Can’t wait to see what this author puts out next!

Great book that will keep you hooked! The characters are well developed and worth investing in. The plot line is engaging and keeps you guessing. I wouldn’t call it a who done it, but it will have you scratching your head.
With that being said, expect to laugh, cry, and smile as you work your way through the life of Cosette.
