Talking Totem
The Talking Totem was written to honor the deep roots of the Kwakwaka’wakw people of northern Vancouver Island — their land, language, and stories that continue to live through.
Through the eyes of Khloe and Xander, two curious children exploring Port Hardy’s rocky coast, readers journey into the living history of Tsaxis (Fort Rupert). Guided by a talking totem pole — the keeper of memories — they witness the strength, unity, and enduring spirit of the Kwakwaka’wakw Nation, from longhouses and cedar forests to modern coastal life.
This story was created in collaboration with Andrea Wilson, a grass-rooted Kwakiutl woman of the Kwakwaka’wakw Nation. Her cultural knowledge, guidance, and storytelling ensured that this book respectfully reflects the traditions and truths of her people.
As a non-Indigenous writer, Stacey Johnson expresses deep gratitude for Andrea’s generosity, wisdom, and friendship in helping bring this story to life — one that celebrates resilience, respect, and the heartbeat of the land where cedar, salmon, and spirit still meet the sea.
