Copper County #3

I disadattati di Copper County (Copper County (Italiano) Vol. 4)

Rate this book

I didn’t find this as entertaining as the previous two books. I usually enjoy the sort of dynamic that Delaney and Brewer have in the first part of the story, but for some reason it annoyed me here. It was mostly Delaney who annoyed me. Even though I really liked him in book 2. Things got better for me later in the story, though.

The romance was all right, as well as the side plots, but I can’t say that this is the book I couldn’t put down. I actually did to read another book. There were moments I enjoyed and I really liked seeing the characters we’ve already met, but it’s not my favourite in the series.

RATING 4.5 STARS

The Misfits of Copper County is book three in the Copper County series by May Archer. This is Delaney and Brewer’s story and it’s so cute. There’s also a bit of mystery in this one which made it even better!

Delaney Monroe is an award winning investigative journalist. His assignments take him all over the world. So he’s not sure why he felt so compelled to buy the fixer upper home on Copper Lake. His sister lives right down the street and just had a baby so that was a big motivation. Or so he tells everyone. Mostly he just loves Copper County. It’s peaceful. I had a little trouble liking Delaney at first. He came off as bossy, a big chip on his shoulder, argumentative, superior. But as I got to know him, he was none of those things. It just took me awhile to really see and understand him. I think Brewer would agree with me!

Brewer Barnum is the contractor working on Delaney’s home. It’s a much older home and Brewer lives for fixing up homes like this to make sure that everything is done true to the period the home was built. But in this case, his visions are nothing like what Delaney wants. Brewer knows the customer is always supposed to be right. But this time, he’s wrong. If he would only listen to Brewer, he’d see that what he wants would never work!

And so it goes, a bit of tension builds between these two. And it all comes to a boiling point the night Delaney storms over to Brewer’s place to confront him. He didn’t mean to do it. It was an accident when he tripped, and caused Brewer’s camper home to burn down. So he couldn’t stop himself when he offered up his attic for Brewer to live in.

This got better and better the farther I got. There were so many giggle moments. Also plenty of sweet, swoony moments. There was some mystery involved too. The story Delaney is working on just isn’t coming together the way he needs to do. Then there was a crazy discovery Brewer and Delaney made while doing some stress relief by smashing the sledge hammer in the kitchen. It was such a fun, sweet book and once I really got going, I didn’t want to stop reading. I’m not sure if there is going to be more in this series but if there is, I’ll be right there for it.

This is my favorite of the three Copper County books:

~ Enemies-to-lovers vibe (Delaney and Brewer don't see eye to eye when it comes to bathroom vanities or kitchen cabinets or ... well, most anything)
~ Size difference (Delaney is a perfectly average 5.8, while Brewer towers over everyone at 6 ++ feet)
~ Two men with chips on their shoulder (Brewer literally carries wood and stuff, while Delaney is more than a little prickly about ... um, many things really)
~ Cute pup named Teeny who's definitely not teeny
~ Home renovations (I never get tired of this trope; there's something so sexy about a man who's good with his hands)
~ Old-school jam cupboard (I desperately want one now)
~ Dependent sleeping (LMAO - trust me, this was hilarious)
~ A bit of pining
~ A bit of conflict
~ More than a bit of humor
~ Smokin' sexy times (jam cupboard may or may not have been involved)
~ A few meddling but kind townfolk (obviously)
~ Hidden art (this was a pretty cool side plot)
~ Grin-inducing epilogue (thank goodness the tea cups were safe!)

I especially like that the deal with Brewer's dad did not turn out how I expected.

The author even showed restraint around introducing future MCs - not full restraint, mind you, but some.

This is the best of May Archer, and, yes, The Misfits of Copper County can be read as a standalone.

Okay yes, this is my fav of the series so far!

May Archer and I just vibe when it comes to banter, humour and wit and this book was no exception, making me snort my way through it.

This is the story of Delaney, who we’ve met in the previous books, and his contractor Brewer and to say those two do not see eye to eye is an understatement 😅
But next to all the bickering and fighting there’s also so much delicious pining and sexual tension that finally boils over one snowstorm-y night where the power cuts out. You know what happens next 😏

I really, genuinely liked both MCs and thought the backstories provided for them made them feel real and relatable.
Delaney especially was such a lovable character, and his relationship development with Teeny, this massive, gentle dog, was a highlight for me. That scene where he - who’s so afraid of dogs normally - has a whole conversation with her cracked me up. Sometimes those chats with our pets really are the most honest and productive, huh?

I also really enjoyed the renovation and mysterious paintings side plots and I genuinely couldn’t tell how the story with Brewer’s father would pan out, which kept me hooked.

May Archer’s small town communities can get a bit much - and sometimes even be a little annoying, ngl - but here they were perfect. Delaney’s family as well as the THWAC (The Helpful Wintertime Association of Coppertians) made me smile so much.
I’m really starting to fall for Copper County 🥰

The epilogue was ugh, so cute.
What a perfect palate cleanser!

I do love spending time in May Archer's small town series' and Copper County is no exception.

This vaguely interlinked series sees familiar faces popping up and the whole vibe of the romances are generally low angst, feel good factor narratives that don't have you worrying there'll be some dumb 75% Third Act trauma simply to cause tension.

There's also the laughs you'd expect, the interfering friends and family who think they know best and, ultimately, two men who find that maybe they're not so different after all.

With a cracking good reason for the forced proximity element of this story, May sets out from the beginning to make the reader fall for both Delaney and Brewer. Each of them is holding hurts close to their chest and each finds unbending to be a hard thing to do.

They fratch and spark because of the attraction they're both determined to ignore until it all blows over one night when a snowfall and power outage forces them into the same room for an extended period of time.

I loved everything about this story, from the dawning awareness that they could be good for each other, to Delaney's statistics and facts he uses to hide that he's vulnerable and a little bit lonely, to Brewer's stubbornness slowly dissolving as he realises how best to approach making changes to the house restorations.

I loved Brewer's newfoundland Teeny, who's anything but and actually named after a character in Les Mis. I loved Delaney's sister Tam, and his brother Law, who finally got him to see that they thought he was special - even though he wasn't an ice hockey god!

The bonus story, which involves Brewer's cousin Hayes, is also fab and definitely worth signing up to May's newsletter if you don't already.

Wholesome “enemies” to lovers romance by the queen of small-town-romances 🥰

It was… cute. Warm hearted. Exactly what I’d thought I’d get when I started reading/listening to it. Yes, we do get to meet all the quirky people from Copper County again, but while some are mildly annoying (I’ll never get the hype around Charcouterie-boards for example), others are just extremely lovable, like Hen, or Janet.

If this book was a dessert, it would be a spicy chocolate cake with lots of vanilla custard on top - we have Delaney, Tam’s one brother who’s not a hockey player (but a successful journalist), who moved to this small town to be closer to his sister. And Brewer, the gentle giant, his contractor, who is tasked with renovating the house Delaney brought.

Delaney is the typical “city boy”, with all his ideas of “industrial chic”, always a little prickly when he thinks he’s not being heard. Brewer is… well. Gentle. And very attracted to Delaney, but very firm about keeping his distance from his client.

Things happen, trailers ACCIDENTALLY go up in flames, living in close proximity ensures, a huge (but friendly) dog might or might not ACCIDENTALLY get dog treats delivered, a wall gets ACCIDENTALLY torn down to release a secret jam cupboard (and some mysterious paintings).

It’s predictable, and it’s fun. What I’m really happy about: not every plot line ends up in magic and fairy dust, so it’s not TOO sweet.

The narration by Michael Dean is on point - he’s one of the narrators who really got better with time, and it’s not just because I got used to him.

Read this book if you’re liking for an uncomplicated, warm escape from everything that happens around us. And I’m very much looking forward to the next book in this series, which promises to be an idiots-best-friends-to-lovers-bi-awakening treat 🥰

For enemies to lovers this was surprisingly wholesome. Delaney and Brewer were entertaining with their stubbornness, but also really sweet when it came to their feelings for each other.

I was honestly more interested in Hayes and Kel's situation though, and I'm so glad there was a short story about them!

I'm also hoping that we're going to get a story for Delaney's brother, Lawson, at some point because he's been floating around the periphery of the series for a couple of books now and I'm curious!

Read in another fun buddy read with the always lovely Lilly ❤️

Another cute May Archer installment in the world of O'Leary/Copper County.

I liked Delaney and Brewer together, although Delaney was a bit much at first. Slightly annoying, but he got better as the story progressed and was fully lovable by the end, so it was only at first.

This book tried to make them "enemies to lovers" but it was just kind of some annoyance to lovers, really, and pretty half heartedly. Really Delaney just needed to get over himself a bit.

This didn't have much in the way of plot, other than the renovation going on that Brewer was the contractor on that Delaney was paying, and them butting heads over it. There is a secondary plot with Brewer and his father and Delaney unknowingly writing about him (he's a journalist) but it doesn't come to a head until the end and is resolved fairly easily.

Really, this book is just good for a fun, fluffy pick me up. Need a good, sweet romance that's mainly just fluff? A nice break from all the heavy, angsty books you might be reading? This book has you covered.

I did enjoy Delaney and Brewer together and their dynamic. They had good chemistry. I especially liked when they got snowed in and had to stay in front of the fire when the power went out. That was a great scene between them. I liked how they connected so well there.

But a big reason for my star off was the author kind of phoned it in when it came to their sex scenes. I don't know she had a ghost writer not so great at writing sex scenes or she herself was writing this and kind of checked out when it came to the smut, but either way they just were kind of...blah overall. There were some good parts, but overall they were a let down. They were too rushed, too glossed over.

Here these two were, supposed to be having this epic sex and it was just kind of by rote...just kind of "meh." The romance was good and on point and their connection was good, it just didn't translate the best to their sex scenes. The few we got, anyway. They needed to be more - more detailed, more steamy, just more.

Also they were barely doing anything for a week or so before they were all "I have to tell him that I love him" which felt a bit fast. These two were cute so I mostly let it go, but still, I feel like more time should have been had with them together before declaring love and all that.

Otherwise, though, I enjoyed this and it gets a solid 4 stars from me. It mostly maintained the sweet fluffiness this author brings, with fun characters and interactions, and a well build romance overall, so a solid read overall.

I look forward to more in this series. Perhaps a romance for Lawson and Oliver next? We'er getting a short for Kels and Hayes, at the very least, so looking forward to that as well.

Until then! 😘

My Ratings for the Copper County Series:

I have to say, I didn't love it as much, as the first two books in this series.

I just didn't completely vibe with it. It had the same May Archer feeling you normally get, like the quirky small towns, the swoon and the humour. I guess my issue with it, were the characters?!

At first I disliked Delaney, seriously disliked him, he was so closed off and almost arrogant. Throughout the story though, I liked him more and more. Brewer on the other hand? I didn't like him at all. I love a silent grumpy type but he was just meh. He was also closed off but he stayed that way. His walls were high and it took till the last chapters in the book that he opened himself up.

Their reasons for why they couldn't be together or hook up were stupid too. I didn't like it. Brewer was so concerned with his reputation, why, because he sleeps with one client? And they acted as if Delaney would move away again, even if he would take the Costa Rica Job. HE BOUGHT A HOUSE. At most he would travel and that, isn't a reason to not date either. Oh well.

The epilogue was cute though. I really like the Copper County series and I'm super glad that I read all four books!

It was an okay story.

I'm not going to do Brewer and Delaney individually but to say, they both had problems. To be honest, I skimmed through most of the book because, after four chapters of teeny bobber things, I was bored. Too much inner mind thinking. I'm sure, everyone who has read this book will glamour it. For me, the first one was the best.

Delaney and Brewer …

Delaney, a writer, is going through a house renovation, and Brewer is his man in charge of the changes.
They each learn about the other as they move along, with failed projects and successes, too. We also have Delaney’s writing piece he’s investigating, and needs to finish soon.
Soon the deep attraction is hard to deny.
The two are fun, witty and interesting, and super sexy together.
The investigation of the paperwork for the article gets more important.
Well written and well thought out.
ENJOY!

I'm happy to be back in Copper County.

May Archer's books are always fun and lighthearted, the best way to enjoy a romance book.
This book definitely hit the spot on several things that I love: small town romance, forced proximity, fighting obvious feelings, a cute dog, and great secondary characters.

Delaney and Brewer's story starts chaotically and somewhat horribly. I didn't really like how their stubbornness clashed at the beginning because they were very rude to each other. Even though it stems from their repressed attraction toneach other, it was a tad too intense for me. Delaney, with being his uncompromising and stubborn self and Brewer with his sneak gaslighting ways, did not match. To a point where it hurt me to read their interactions. It's not cool.

Fortunately, the initial bad feelings are quickly snuffled after Brewer is forced to move in with Delaney when Delaney accidentally burns down his camper. It's not ideal that a literal disastrous tragedy is needed to make them see each other somewhat differently, but at least it happened. From that point, the story really takes a 180° and both Delaney and Brewer start to show their real, caring selves.

I think the title is spot on with this one. Delaney feels like an outsider in the small town of Copper County. He's a big city journalist, not a homemaker. Yet, here he is renovating a house and living two hours from the nearest airport. I liked his character development. Both in regards to himself and discovering how his needs have changed and in regards to his relationships that grow deeper as he settles in the small town.
Brewer is similarly a misfit, but it's more self-inflicted. He's been hurt before, so he keeps everyone at arms length, his cousin, his friends, Delaney. But even though it's not his intention, his big heart, talent, and loyalty are obvious, so he inadvertently becomes an integral part of the little town.

Their cohabitation while Brewer renovates Delaney's house is tense because they struggle to hide their chemistry. Brewer softens towards the prickly homeowner when Delaney leaves him and his dog (who Delaney *supposedley* doesn't like) dinner and treats. Delaney gives in when he realizes that Brewer might be right when it comes to his homedecorating choices.
After one tipsy night breaks down their walls, there's no going back.

An unexpected but very small towny extra in the book is the mistery of the jam cupboard where Delaney and Brewer accidentally find some interesting pieces of history. It adds something special to the story, especially because it brings Delaney so much closer to becoming a true small town lad.

Obviously, the Coopertians are all over this new mystery and flood Delaney with all their small town charm that is impossible to resist. The distinct, a little whacky but absolutely sweet characters make this book (and series) one of my favourite small town stories. They bring fun and laughter, but they also bring community and infinite love. Especially when some of the characters that pop up from time to time are the leads from the previous books. They bring their lovely personalities and friendship to round out the romance in the story.

So many little moments made me smile or laugh out loud. I enjoyed reading this book immensely.
When you finish, definitely check out the extra content about Kel and Hayes (two prominent secondary characters) because it's the sweetest and funniest snippet ever.

Overall, this book did not disappoint. I'm looking forward to more love stories in Copper County.

The misfits of copper county
Book 2

Brewer and Delaney

Size difference
Small town
Forced proximity
Enemies to lovers
Opposites attract
Found Family

Delaney is new to Copper County ish. He has recently bought a new home and wants to fix it up to his standards. Brewer is the town's gruff contractor to the rescue. Butting heads on how to do the renovations and miscommunication leads to an enemies vibe.

“I continued, “if I don’t have a shovel on Wednesday morning to clean the snow, the man will sigh at me like I’m incompetent, Janice. He won’t be able to help himself. He will roll his eyes. He’ll give a little snort that’s just low enough to make it seem plausible that he thought I wouldn’t hear it, though he absolutely knows I can hear it. And because I am actually very competent, there will be a murder in this town.”

Let the good times begin. Both stubborn in their own way, they find themselves in a forced proximity situation as Delaney is partly responsible for burning down Brewers home.

Frustration and lust bubbles over and they begin to see each other in a new light and realize they have more in common than they thought.

“Despite myself, I enjoyed the show. Delaney was never more gorgeous than when he was righteously pissed off. Fortunately (which was to say, really fucking unfortunately) for me, he seemed to be perpetually pissed off when we were together.”

This is an easy going series, sweet, romantic and funny. Great side characters close to the Mc’s but also the townspeople are great too.

Characters: Brewer and Delaney

May Archer is a comfort read for me. I thoroughly enjoy every single one of her books. They bring me a lot of joy and boost my mood every time.
This was no different. I really enjoyed every single minute of it. I loved both Brewer and Delaney along with all of the side characters, town people, and the adorable pup. The humor is spot on, along with the steam, and the heart and passion. It's light drama, little to no angst, and overall, a light read. Another fantastic release!

If you have the option, I highly suggest pickup up the audiobooks. Michael Dean is the narrator for all of them, and he is truly wonderful. He does a fantastic job of bringing the characters to life, giving them their own personalities, and making them different enough you can tell who is speaking when despite both POV's being done by only him.

This is definitely the best one so far. The whole thing had me laughing from beginning to end.

Delaney can be a bit high-strung and defensive, but he’s spent a long time misunderstanding his role in his family.
Brewer was lovely, not great at communicating, but he learned how to open up with Delaney’s help. They were so cute together, bickering and making up in a back-and-forth that had me glued to the pages. I liked the outcome of Delaney’s investigation; I wasn’t expecting that. I loved their discovery of the art and the story behind it. I loved the story behind Teeny’s name too.

Hayes and Kel— who were also funny— finally saw what everyone else could see in their friendship. I loved their bonus story.

This series gets better with each book.

Brewer and Delaney were real fun together. I liked the antagonism and tension between them. They were definitely hot together. I did find it annoying that once they started hooking up Brewer kept thinking that he shouldn’t get attached because Delaney is just a “hurricane” breezing through town and won’t be sticking around …..MEANWHILE he seems to conveniently forget that Delaney bought a fucking house and is spending a lot of time and money to have Brewer himself renovate it…he may be leaving for different journalism jobs on occasion but his homebase is now Copper County, fool! Glad they figured it out lol and Kel and Hayes were silly and cute and their bonus scene was actually to most precious and I could stand a novella for them tbh 😬

This was fine. I really enjoyed the first half, then things just kinda petered out for me. I do love a neurotic Delaney-type character, but even he couldn’t save it for me. Also, my friend’s dog is named Brewer so I struggled with that.

I understand that the big character trait of these two MCs is an inability to open up, communicate, talk about themselves and their feelings, but fuuuuuuck did it make for a boring second half of a book.

The epilogue was also fucking awful. It was about someone else’s baby. Why do author’s do this?

Read as an ARC
Funny, heartwarming, classic May perfection!

Walking my dog with my AirPods in, I found myself laughing out loud and trying to blame my innocent dog for my giggles as I listened to Delaney and Brewer’s banter. And, Delaney’s adorable rambling!

This next book from the wonderful Copper County series is simply wonderful. They all are my favorite as they all are unique. Delaney and Brewer are two opposites who just could never be imagined together, until they learn more about each other. And, listen to each other. But, to do that, they have to try. Or…be put in the position to try. ;) May’s creativity and humor gets them there and you just can’t put this down!

Highly recommend for heart and humor. Another win!

It’s great to be back in Copper County.

Delaney and Brewer’s story had me giggling, laughing and smiling from start to finish. Delaney can be a bit prickly and cranky but also sweet and tender hearted whilst Brewer is pretty calm and steady but closed off somewhat. Together these two very likeable characters certainly have some interesting moments as Brewer renovates Delaney’s home. He also has to take up residence there after an unfortunate incident involving Delaney, a grill burning and Brewer watching his camper burn down. They start out clashing constantly regarding the renovations but before too long the chemistry between them burns bright and leads to more. It does take longer for them to verbally define their relationship (yay for timely communication) as they make the way to their heartwarming HEA. Once again the local Copper County identities have a role to play as this enjoyable story unfolds. There’s minimal angst, renovation double entendres and a mystery involving located artworks to solve. I once again loved being immersed in the Copper County community where John Ruffian, charcuterie boards, and nosey but well meaning locals are the norm.

Once again, May Archer has produced both a charming and light hearted romance. Delaney and Brewer couldn't be more different, yet their initial disdain for each other sparked a fiery attraction literally, as it happened😭. Delaney is partly responsible for Brewer's home going up in flames 🔥 As the guys spend time together, their banter turns into a grudging respect, evolves into tender moments, and then passionate declarations of love 🥰
I'm really enjoying this series, the characters are well written, the stories full of gentle humour 😊 They really are an odd bunch in Copper County, so nosy, and interfering, but so caring, I just want to hug them all 🤗 It was great coming across Reed and Chris again. Chris and his charcuterie boards do make me laugh 😂

This is a beautifully crafted tale of opposites attracting, with lovable characters, humour, and loads of heart. Perfect for fans of sweet romances and quirky characters!

Such a perfect low angst small town romance! They're not really enemies but they constantly fight due to the renovations and they slowly start opening up and the way they appeared to each other at first changed into a softness and admiration and devotion that I truly loved. Both with issues, both trying to fit in, both finding out opening up to new things might just make the loneliness go away. Even with all the nosiness of a small town community with their weird meetings and amazing book clubs!

And that epilogue was beyond perfect! Chris and Reed, omg, I love this interconnected series so much!!
