An inspirational story based on a maritime disaster in 1917, Halifax, Nova Scotia. Hope shines through even in the devastation and loss of so many lives.

Well-written and thoroughly researched, the author sensitively shapes characters who reflect what real people faced following this horrible event. From wounded World War I veterans in the hospital, to families going about their day and children at school--a moment in time that changed their lives forever--they were all affected by the aftermath.

The main characters courageously deal with many losses, extending care to others who have no one to help. They demonstrate faith in action even while working through their own doubts and fears. A spark of romance is included, but realistically put on hold until later, as their lives were upended by all they had to work through. A lovely ending left the story on a sweet note.

Recommend to readers who like historical Christian fiction based on real history, with faith and a little romance. 4.5 stars

This was a quick read, but not a deep one. You’d think things would be deep with that much of a tragedy so it felt like something was missing with the lack of it. I expected a nursing plot with the title containing “healer” but there wasn’t one; and she wasn’t reluctant to take in orphans, so l was unsure how the title was supposed to tie to the story.

I really liked the lead characters and I do feel invested in how they were doing. I did, however, find the constant bloody descriptions and the throwing-up as a reaction to be really repetitive. In a shorter book that’s even more noticeable than in a regular length novel.

What a powerful and stirring story!

It was easy to connect with Oliver (a wounded soldier) and Pearline (the woman he left behind) as they faced heartbreak and the terrible Halifax Explosion of 1917 as they try to heal and find hope again.

This book takes you deep into the pit of grief, loss, and the hard questions that come with tragedy. But it also carries a quiet thread of hope, faith, and grace. The characters feel authentic as they struggle to find their way to healing. This thoughtful, hope-filled read is for anyone who appreciates historical fiction that honors both sorrow and strength.

Wow… 4.25 stars.
This novel is a poignant narrative of the tragic disaster that was the Halifax explosion. With deep themes of faith, Terrie Todd vividly paints the horrors of not only that day and its aftermath, but also a soldier’s intense struggle of survivor’s guilt and shell-shock. Pearline is a strong, kind, and persevering lead, AND she still struggles with doubt, worry, and faith. Yet, she doesn’t turn from God; instead she grows in her relationship with Him, choosing to lean into Him even as she questions. Oliver struggles deeply with his worth after returning home from the war front injured and disfigured. Slowly, he learns how to cope, that he isn’t alone, and through it and through Pearline’s example, his faith is strengthened and he finds forgiveness.
The writing is devastating in its imagery, yet still holds such hope. I highly recommend if you enjoy Christian historical fiction, heartfelt, tear-jerking (I cried throughout the entirety of this book), and hope-among-loss reads.
My only qualms were that some things felt a little repetitive (like the reiteration/reminder of Pearline’s weak stomach), and some phrases/wording felt a little off. But they were very, very small things, and they absolutely did not take away from the beautifully woven novel.
There is no swearing and it is wholly clean, HOWEVER it does deal with heavy themes (loss, graphic injury, trauma, etc.) so I recommend researching TWs for this title if you need.
All in all, this truly is such an important story, and has been carefully written and researched. A truly powerful book.

The Reluctant Healer of Halifax by Terrie Todd is a Christian historical fiction novel set during the 1917 Halifax Explosion. The story follows Pearline Campbell and her shell-shocked injured World War I veteran fiancé, Oliver Hamilton, as they navigate personal heartbreak and sudden catastrophe. When Oliver returns from the front he is disfigured and depressed and breaks off his engagement to Pearline. While in the hospital, the famous Halifax explosion occurs killing and injuring thousands. Oliver leaves the hospital to help out and Pearline does what she can. Parents are killed, siblings are missing, homes are destroyed and everyone steps up to help.

I've been fascinated with the Halifax explosion since visiting the museums on the Halifax waterfront a few years ago. I had heard of this event, but didn't know a lot about it. Terrie Todd tells the story from the POV of Pearline, Oliver and their families and close friends. It was horrific and the survivors did what they could to help others. Some of the missing people weren't located for a couple of years as they had lost their memory. Pearline opens the family home to orphans to help get over her grief. Oliver, blind in one eye and disfigured doesn't think he will be able to teach, but finds an alternative that works for him. The Halifax Explosion of December 6, 1917, caused the largest mass-blinding in Canadian history. While the ship burned in the harbor, people rushed to their windows to look and the subsequent explosion sent glass flying into their eyes. The Halifax School for the Blind was thrust into the spotlight and Terrie Todd used this in her story. It was the first residential school for the blind in Canada, and was instrumental in forming the CNIB (Canadian National Institute for the Blind) I found that part of the story very interesting. If you enjoy historical fiction that is faith based, and based on a real event, then I definitely recommend you pick up The Reluctant Healer of Halifax. I did a read listen of this book, with the audiobook narrated by Naomi Mayo. This was a very emotional story and I found Mayo's voice easily voiced the emotional scenes with Pearline and Oliver. She doesn't over-dramatize, but uses tone and some expression to portray it. She also gave individual voices to the various characters. This is the first book I've read by Terrie Todd and I will definitely look for others from her backlist.

I have to say that The Reluctant Healer of Halifax is a fabulous addition and conclusion to the Enduring Hope series! I will say I have greatly enjoyed this series because what I love about it is that each book is written by a different author and is a standalone. These stories really show that women can make a difference in anything as long as they put their mind to it. Overall if you ever get the chance to get your hands on this series you should because each story has some delightful characters.

Our stoty focuses on a young woman named Pearline who lives in 1917 Halifax. Her life is in shambles duebto the loss of her parents, having to provide for her siblings, and her sweetheart comes home from the not wanting anything to do with her. However, she wants to do better and start something that matters. Along the way her past love Oliver starts to come to the realization that perhaps maybe something can work out for the better.

The Reluctant Healer of Halifax by Terrie Todd – Wonderful Inspiring Story with Interesting, Likeable Characters

I had never heard of the tragic 1917 Halifax explosion that devastated this city in Nova Scotia, which impacted thousands of people. People were gravely injured; over a thousand were killed in the explosion, and hundreds died from their injuries in the weeks that followed the devastating accident. Families searched for their loved ones, not knowing if they were dead or alive.

I had never heard of author Terrie Todd before or read any of her books. But she did a tremendous job in telling this account of the Halifax catastrophe in her historical fiction novel The Reluctant Healer of Halifax.

She brought the story to life by focusing on two families, the Campbells and the Hamiltons. She told how their family, friends, and community rallied together in the face of horror to save lives, bury the dead, house the orphans, provide for the needy, and slowly rebuild their community and lives.

Days earlier, Oliver Hamilton had been shipped home from the WWI war front where he had sustained injuries and lost an eye. As he lay on his bed in the Veteran’s Hospital, he couldn’t imagine going on with this life as he had planned. He was certain that it was best to break off his relationship with Pearline Campbell and let her go on with her life.

But in Halifax, on the morning of December 6, 1917, a clear sunny day, who would imagine that the only two ships in the harbor would collide? That the collision would set off an explosion that would destroy the city? All members of the community would need to pull together, including those injured war veterans who had recently returned.

I loved reading this story and learning about Canadian history. Terrie Todd did a great job in bringing these characters to life. She told the story of how they pulled together to meet the overwhelming needs of so many, while trying to find out about their own family and friends. Instead of turning inwards, by God’s grace and through His strength, they moved forward one day at a time. They showed compassion and care when their own hearts were hurting.

It was amazing to learn about the care that poured in from outside communities and countries. Aid came to help individuals, families, and the city rebuild their community. Help came after the disaster and continued over many months.

My favorite part of the book was the maturity depicted in the characters and their ability to grow, adapt, and change. Their faith sustained them. Instead of growing bitter or turning away from God, they turned to God and depended upon Him in the hours and days of their greatest need. I loved the prayers and the good theology included in the storyline and reflected in the characters. When reading this book, I couldn’t help but wonder how I would have responded to a devastating tragedy like this.

The Reluctant Healer of Halifax by Terrie Todd is a wonderful historical fiction account of the horrific tragedy that brought people together to rebuild. Rebuild their community and their lives.

And so we are given in vivid clarity a recounting of the horrible harbor ship explosion of 1917 in Halifax, Nova Scotia. I am enjoying this series, Enduring Hope, by Barbour very much. Each stand-alone book tells the story of an American ( including Canadian) disaster that many have never learned from history class. Terrie Todd brings the WWI setting and Halifax tragedy to unforgettable life in her novel, The Reluctant Healer of Halifax.

One of the main characters is an injured soldier, Oliver Hamilton, who returns from the European front minus an eye and with internal emotional scars. Certain his bright future is over, he breaks things off with his almost-fiancée, deciding he will not saddle her with a lifetime married to a freak. Heartbroken, Pearline shares with her wise parents. Her mother thoughtfully responds,“Sounds like whatever’s hiding under Oliver’s bandages is not nearly as bad as what’s deep inside him right now.”
But, will Pearline ever get a chance to show Oliver that she loves him for his character, not his face? Or has his character been marred as badly as his face?

Soon, Pearline, the female main character, must put aside her broken heart to deal with the incredible shock and tragedy of the harbor explosion. What starts as a ship collision turns into a disaster of epic proportions as a ship with wartime cargo explodes, raining death, destruction, blindness, and literal Hell down upon the town. Search for family and friends becomes her consuming passion. What will Pearline and her hired hand, Daisy find in their quest for answers? How will their lives change from normal to “normal isn’t coming back,” how do we deal with our new reality?

I loved how there was great cooperation between American (particularly Bostonian)people and the people of Nova Scotia. We can be good neighbors!!

Emotional, heart-rending, with God-incidences, great character growth arcs and historical fact all presented so compellingly. I couldn't close this book, once opened, until I’d devoured the final word!

I picked up The Reluctant Healer of Halifax for two very personal reasons. My family lived in Halifax during this period, while another branch of my family lived in Boston, so I have an ancestral connection to both places involved in this tragedy and its aftermath. I have also read every book in this series, so I was excited to continue with Terrie Todd’s story.

There is no question that this book is well written and very well researched. The historical details surrounding the Halifax Explosion, the devastation throughout the city, the investigation that followed, and the tremendous relief effort from Boston gave me a much deeper understanding of this terrible event. I especially appreciated the author’s note explaining where the historical timeline had been adjusted for the story.

Pearline’s story is one of enormous loss. In an instant, she is left grieving her parents, searching for her missing brother, caring for a sister who has stopped speaking, and opening her home to children who have also lost everything. There are beautiful themes of faith, rebuilding, service, hope, and creating family in the middle of tragedy.

Unfortunately, this was also much too heavy a read for me personally.

What made it especially difficult was Oliver ending his relationship with Pearline immediately before the explosion. He returns from the war disfigured and struggling with what he has experienced, and I could sympathize with his pain, but I became frustrated with him.

With so much devastation already surrounding Pearline, I desperately wanted Oliver to become a source of comfort and support for her. A little more romance, tenderness, and partnership between them would have given me the emotional breathing room I needed. Instead, his absence from her life during so much of her suffering made the continuing loss and hardship feel almost relentless.

For me, there was simply too much sadness packed into one story. Because of my own emotional limits, reading such sustained grief and tragedy was difficult, and I found myself feeling weighed down rather than hopeful while reading.

That said, my three-star rating reflects my personal reading experience much more than the quality of Terrie Todd’s historical research. Readers who enjoy deeply emotional historical fiction centered on real disasters, faith, resilience, and rebuilding may have a very different reaction to this one.

“The Reluctant Healer of Halifax” by Terrie Todd is a deeply moving story about the events of December 6, 1917, when the harbor of Halifax was completely obliterated by an explosion. Readers follow the story of Pearline Campbell as she eagerly awaits the return of her love, Oliver Hamilton, from war. Only Oliver comes home injured and scarred inside and out from his time fighting overseas. Just after Pearline reunites with Oliver at the hospital, the very foundation of their lives is destroyed by a deadly and horrific explosion in the harbor. In the aftermath of this terrible tragedy, Pearline digs deep inside herself and in her faith in God for strength to persevere and continue on. Pearline is desperate to locate her loved ones, and along the way, so many orphans and those in need come across her path. Oliver is thrust into the role of helping to search the rubble for survivors, despite being injured himself. His struggles after returning to life at home after fighting in the war shed light on the fact that PTSD and trauma have long been an issue for our brave men and women who defend freedom.

I highly recommend this book. First, it sheds light on a historic event that I had not read about previously, and now I would like to know more about it. The deadly explosion in the harbor at Halifax was a terrible tragedy, and it makes me wonder if leadership had listened more to those who worked the harbor for a living, would this horrible tragedy have been avoided. Second, Terrie Todd has given us some wonderfully rich characters in this book who help draw readers right into the story. I was emotionally invested in this story and in finding Pearline’s family members. Third, the plot does not lag or go stagnant, rather, the plot continues to carry the reader right up until the very last word. When the story ended, I was left wanting more of the story and wishing there could be another one to help us see how the characters and the town continued to recover from their horrible ordeal. Bottom line, if you like a good story, or you like history, or you just want to read a new book, then this is the book for you.

Having grown up in the Halifax, Nova Scotia region myself, and knowing some of the street names named in the story and having learned a smidgen or two about the Halifax Explosion years ago, this work of historical fiction made the tragic happening of yore all the more real to me. It must truly have been a horrific and devastating period of time on top of the chaos and heartache of the ongoing WWI of that timeframe. Not knowing many of the facts of the explosion and its aftermath, as detailed in this tale, made me appreciate this book all the more for adding to my general knowledge.

As I read, I liked how the author carried the reader through the story as the before, during and aftermath of the explosion unfolds. The author, at least in my opinion, brings the reader through as if you'd lived through it all yourself. You really feel like you are at ground zero.

I believe that potential readers must be prepared to read some graphic word pictures; learn of the pyschological effects, the blindness from glass shards, the loss of family members, homes and be prepared for tears that may come, but also feel the joys. There were wicked people who took advantage of vulnerable people but also the kind and compassionate ones like Pearline, Daisy, Mrs. Hamilton and soldiers like Oliver and Murphy, who in turn all had substantial losses of their own.

Frustrating romance, and a strong faith and trust in God coupled with prayer were laced through the narrative in good, satisfying quantities, making the whole story an extra special read for me. The blind got very honorable mention, in fact, a school for the blind and the very newly made blind are highlighted and given good dignity and placement in the story.

I feel that this is a well-written work and it gets a 5 Star rating from me.

Wonderful story by Terri Todd that held me captive from beginning to end. When an explosion occurs in the harbor of Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada with ships carrying ammunition it levels the town within seconds and kills more than 1700 people and badly injures many more. Based on a true story in 1917 this story will tug at your heartstrings with descriptions so vivid you can actually see and feel what the people of Halifax must have felt on that day.

Pearline Campbell finds herself in a state of confusion when the love of her life returns home from the war in Europe injured and disfigured and wants to end their relationship. Oliver Hamilton decides that his missing eye and the scars around that area will be too much for Pearline and what he thinks would be a normal life for the two of them. He is determined to let Pearline go but the explosion pulls him from his hospital bed and thrusts him into the chaos and devastation that happens on that sad day.

Pearline loses her parents in the blast and is missing a brother and becomes the guardian for her sister while taking in several more children who have lost their parents either by death or being lost in the crowd. Oliver strikes out and helps in any way that he can to find survivors and help the injured, but when Pearline learns the baby she has grown so fond of parents have been found she knows immediately she must return the baby. Oliver realizes how deeply this will have an effect on her and he goes in search of her brother. As the two navigate their way through such sorrow and despair hearts begin to soften and Oliver learns to let go of his fears over his appearance and let Pearline love him just the way he is.

I'm reminded of the bible verse in Isaiah 61:3 that there will be beauty from ashes.

Terrie Todd has written a book that will have you feeling every emotion you can think of and well researched her subject for writing this book.

Having never read any other book in this series, I enjoyed The Reluctant Healer of Halifax and felt it could be read as a standalone book. The tragic 1917 explosion in Halifax is one of the historical catastrophes in the early 1900s that I am easily drawn to. What I loved about this book was how riveting the events were from the very beginning. I thought we would have been eased into the explosion, but it was the foremost subject in the book aside from the complex romance.

During the time of the Great War, Pearline Campbell is awaiting her wounded fiancé's return from the battlefield. Her oldest brother is away at the frontlines, and her family is busy helping with the war effort at home in Halifax. As Pearline's fiancé (Oliver Hamilton) returns at a convalescence hospital with a disfiguring injury, there is a tragic breach in their courtship. A few days later while at home busying herself with war work and helping at a local orphanage, a boat is on fire at the dock, and a horrendous explosion hits her town. Pearline must do all that she can to help her neighbors, find her loved ones, and find hope during a bleak reconstruction. Pearline must lean on God to find her way through the aftermath, and although Oliver Hamilton has broken his engagement, he will do all he can to help the town and Pearline while battling his own tragedies.

This book is heavily based in Christian faith, often including many scriptures. I greatly enjoyed this emotional story, and found myself wanting to read more about the main characters' dilemma. Although the book covered various injuries, it did not venture too far off into the gruesome details, which I appreciated. The message of hope was threaded throughout the entire book, and I am eager to go back and read the previous books.

My Review:

How awful it must of been to wake up to a nightmare? One that was shocking, surprising, and will forever be etched in your memory. The people in Halifax, Nova Scotia will never forget it and the people that lost family during that incident most definitely won't.

Pearline and her family were firsthand to this experience that shook their entire existence and life as they know it. But Pearline lost a lot more that day, many of whom she will never be able to recover. So she sets to work to help with the wounded and overnight her life transforms to a recovery worker and caretaker. Sometimes it seems that it meshed so well that she forgets her previous life as she knew it but it is still there under the surface. A reckoning that she isn't ready to acknowledge let alone think about.

Oliver is in his own personal prison one that he will never wake up from or agree to. We follow along as the two of them navigate uncharted waters that have turned the entire world upside down, including their own.

A deeply moving story of faith, hope, and resilience set against one of history’s forgotten tragedies.

Inspired by true events, this Christian historical fiction is set during the devastating 1917 Halifax Harbour Explosion. Although it is the sixth book in the interconnected ‘Enduring Hope Series,’ it works beautifully as a standalone. The story is told through the alternating perspectives of Pearline and Oliver.

One of this novel’s greatest strengths is how seamlessly it blends historical fiction, inspirational fiction, and a gentle romance. The author’s research shines throughout, bringing the tragedy to life with compassion and authenticity. This was a historical event I knew very little about, and the emotional impact of the story moved me to tears more than once. I especially appreciated the author’s notes and resource list, which sent several more books straight to my TBR.

The characters are wonderfully layered, and the themes of found family, discovering one’s purpose, perseverance, and enduring faith add remarkable depth to their journey. The supporting cast is equally memorable, while the lingering grief and sacrifices of war are woven naturally into the story. Although this is Christian fiction, the faith elements feel genuine and organic rather than heavy-handed.

This is a beautifully written and emotionally powerful novel that will stay with me long after I finish it. I would happily recommend it to readers of historical fiction, Christian fiction, and clean historical romance alike. It’s also one I’ll definitely be adding to my physical shelves.

One of the things I love most about historical fiction is how it opens my eyes to events I knew little or nothing about. The Halifax Explosion of 1917 is one of those events for me. After reading The Reluctant Healer of Halifax, I find myself wanting to learn even more about what happened.

I was once told that one of the gifts of reading fiction is that it can help us develop empathy. As we step into the lives of characters and experience what they are going through, we gain a better understanding of how difficult it can be to walk through circumstances we may never personally experience. This book definitely did that for me.

Pearline's story is heartbreaking. The devastation, the loss of family, the uncertainty, and the sheer destruction left behind by the explosion were difficult to read about. Yet woven throughout all that heartbreak was hope—especially in the people who stepped up to help others when their own lives had been turned upside down. There is also a little romance woven into the story, which added another layer to the characters' journey.

I especially appreciated the faith woven throughout the story. The characters pray, seek God for answers, and wrestle with how to move forward when life seems almost impossible. Their faith doesn't erase the pain, but it gives them something to hold onto in the middle of it.

I thoroughly enjoyed The Reluctant Healer of Halifax. It broke my heart, opened my eyes to a piece of history I knew very little about, and reminded me of the incredible resilience and compassion people can show in the aftermath of tragedy. And now, I think I'll be doing something I love after reading good historical fiction—going down a rabbit hole to learn more about the real events behind the story!

"...Halifax" is a historical set in 1917 in Halifax, Canada. As the only healers were minor characters, I'm not sure what the title's referring to. Anyway, this was the story of the explosion of a ship full of munitions in the Halifax harbor. The main characters managed to be everywhere interesting and learned about all of the details of the explosion, so it's basically a history lesson seen through a fictional frame. Pearline's home was far enough away from the harbor that it suffered minimal damage, so she took in orphans from the disaster while looking for her missing family.

Oliver has known Pearline for years and loves her, but his pride can't handle the pity and disgust he's sure he'll receive from people due to damage to his face and a missing eye. He broke off their unofficial engagement for her own good, so she won't feel embarrassed by him (though he claimed it's because she won't be able to handle the sight). He woefully underestimated Pearline time and again, and he kept making decisions for her (mostly, keeping distressing information from her) because he thinks she can't handle it. She kept forgiving him and hoped he'd finally come back to her. As even his own mother was exasperated with him, it's hard to call this a romance even if he did come to appreciate Pearline's emotional strength and integrity.

There was no sex or bad language. The ongoing gore was only minimally described, with the focus more on how people were impacted by what they witnessed. Overall, I'd recommend this interesting historical.

This was a great book for romance and a history lesson! The explosion of the ship at Halifax during World War I is something I'd never heard of before, but obviously had a very significant impact on that city and its people. Coming home with a war injury, Oliver feels as though he is no longer a worthy choice as husband for his fiancee Pearline, and breaks off their engagement. Devastated, Pearline returns home to begin putting her life back together, but the next morning's events change everything.
A ship loaded with war ammunition explodes in the harbor resulting in death, destruction and utter chaos that must take precedence over anything else. Pearline and her housemaid/friend Daisy begin a desperate search for their missing family members only to find their searches end in both joy and further heartbreak. Oliver and his friend Murphy, though both injured, join the efforts to get wounded people to hospitals that have no more room, find the dead among the injured and make attempts to notify loved ones. Many heart-wrenching situations are encountered by both Oliver and Pearline in the aftermath of the explosion, but beneath it all burns the never-ending ache as their hearts mourn the end of their relationship.
Will Pearline's sister ever speak again? Will she ever locate her missing brother? Can Oliver get past his injury and his nightmares to find a job to support his widowed mother? Will Pearline and Oliver ever find their way to the place their hearts are leading them? The book is the 6th book in the "Enduring Hope" series, books written from a variety of authors and can be read as stand alone stories. This is my 1st book by Terrie Todd. It is based on the historical event of the Halifax explosion, on December 6, 1917.
The main characters are Pearline Campbell, and her fiancé Oliver Hamilton, who just returned from war with disfiguring facial wounds. He breaks off their engagement when one of the worst maritime disasters in Nova Scotia occurs. The authors descriptive writing and historical knowledge shine, pulling in the reader into the devastation and destruction that impacted the town and its occupants. The terror, the waiting and building tension of looking for their loved ones through the rubble and at the port is heartbreaking.
Heroic acts, neighbors pulling together and caring for strangers while hoping and trusting God through the events are inspiring.
There is loss of family, physical harm and some bodily injury described without being too graphic and aligns with the events. Pearline and Oliver's relationship grows stronger into a sweet and clean romance. I did find the title a bit misleading as Pearline didn't really evolve into a healer and the ending was quicker and a tad too neat. The event and aftermath was a short window, a few months, so the character engagement was limited.
I do highly recommend this fascinating and inspiring story about a little known event during WW I that was fascinating and filled with courageous people amidst tragic circumstances.

This is an inspirational historical read of the tragedy in Halifax, Nova Scotia during the war in 1917. Terrie Todd penned an amazing read based on historical facts as well as fictional characters. Pearline and Oliver had been neighbors growing up with no engagement prior to him going to war.

I was captured by the first line until the story ended. The hero and heroine faced a lot shortly after Oliver’s return home with the explosion of a ship with ammunition on it in the harbor. The descriptive words and scenes were brought to life by Todd, from heartbreaking at times then the brighter moments of happiness and God’s abiding present with the characters. Pearline’s resilient, courage, strength and faith kept her going with her daily routine even with a broken heart, losing her parents and a missing younger brother from the explosion. She opened her home to orphans with the assistance of the family’s house maid Daisy. Oliver assisted where he could with his friend Murphy in the town. The main and secondary characters had a lot to deal with after this grievous catastrophe; however, Todd weaved a story of great courage, faith, and inspiration with history coming to life following the calamity with the destruction, lives lost, family members separated, connecting others together, and the outpouring of support from America and other cities in Canada.

I really didn't know how vast this tragedy was and how many people were involved. This novel gave a very interesting and real look into the Halifax explosion through the eyes of those who had family directly involved as well as how life was in the aftermath of the chaos and a city trying to grasp what happened and how to begin to heal. This happened during WWI and at first many thought this was an attack from the German's but it was just a terrible accident between two large ships. Oliver Hamilton has just returned from the war and is healing himself, when this explosion happens. Working to help as much as he can, he feels he is right back in the trenches with death and horrific scenes everywhere. He cannot believe this has happened and that this nightmare is actually real life this time. Pearline Campbell is shocked at the destruction of her city and is frantic to find her parents and siblings. The more they search, the more she fears the worst has happened. The Hamilton's and Campell's help each other put things back to right, while helping as many as they can while still holding out hope for those who are still missing. Oliver and Pearline have been dancing around each other since Oliver got back and this may just put into perspective how important they really are to each other. I really enjoyed all the history in this novel as well as how it was told through Oliver and Pearline with a bit of romance written in. Thank you to the author and publisher for the complementary novel, this review is of my own opinion and accord.

A massive explosion in the Halifax, Novia Scotia harbor on the morning of December 6, 1917 ended the lives of thousands of people and changed the landscape for hundreds of others for the rest of their lives. Just a few days prior to the explosion, Pearline Campbell's life had already dramatically changed when her beloved fiance returned from the war in Europe with facial disfiguration and the loss of one eye. Her gratitude over his return was quickly snuffed out when he abruptly terminated their engagement. It was only the beginning of what Pearline would be called upon to endure.

Sergeant Oliver Hamilton could not put the woman he loved through the torture of his continued recovery, and so his strategy had been to cut ties quickly, allowing Pearline to live a happy life without him. Witnessing her disappointment had been brutal, but watching her lose nearly everyone dear to her heart just a few days later, was even worse.

This story struck so many chords; devastating history, unexpected grief, surprising blessings, tests of faith, and enduring hope for the future. If ever there were characters who took the truths of Psalm 91 to heart, they can be found within the pages of this book . . . "He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in Him will I trust".

Excellent historical fiction. Now I want to go to Halifax. This story is based on an accident that so many like me were relatively unaware of, and the reason I love historical fiction. Author Terrie Todd does her research and beautifully weaves it into this story of courage in the face of loss. During WWI, on Thursday, December 6, 1917, the Halifax harbor was leveled by a tremendous explosion.

From the first lines: "Pearline Campbell stared at the shard of glass protruding from her left hand. How did it get there? Why didn't it hurt?" to the last lines, I was captivated! I learned about what happened in the aftermath of this tragedy, and can't help but feel heartbroken for the loss experienced by the people of Halifax on that fateful day in December of 1917. And I admire the people and their courage to live the best they could with this tragedy, and to rebuild.

As the story develops, the tragedy and courage unfold. The author does a beautiful job of telling this story.

A generous and strong young woman in the face of tragedy, helps others in need, makes her home a safe place for orphans, and never stops looking for her brother after the accident. I loved the mother of their close friends across the street who was instrumental in helping Pearline care for the children, and Daisy who was employed by Pearline's mother.

Oliver Hamilton, engaged to Pearline comes home from war with one eye and a scarred face. He has nightmares most nights he goes to sleep and he doesn't want to saddle Pearline with any of it.

I highly recommend this excellent historical fiction. The reader will find it a very compelling story, with hope. I could not put it down!

I like this series of books. They always take a real event and weave an inspiring story around it. This is the tale of Pearline Campbell and her betrothed Sargent Oliver Hamilton.

Oliver has just been injured in Europe in WW1, he arrives home to the local hospital and he has grave injuries. He doesn't want to burden Pearline, so he calls off their engagement. Pearline is heartbroken and shocked. She still loves Oliver and wants to help him, though her only way to help him now is to pray for him.

An explosion in Halifax's harbor wreaks all sorts of havoc. The mostly able bodied soldiers get booted out of the hospital to help with the disaster.

Pearline and her mother volunteer at an orphanage and Pearline plans to go help any way that she is able.

There is a lot of heartbreak in this book, but there are also a lot of heartfelt moments.

I enjoyed it. Highly recommended.

Pearline is my favorite character.

This was such an eye opening book about a tragedy that I was not aware of. The devastating explosion of a ship in Halifax, Nova Scotia, carrying munitions and explosives in December 1917.
Seen through the eyes of a courting couple who were neighbors: Pearline and Oliver, an injured soldier back from the war in France.
Ms. Todd expertly wove real history into the story of this catastrophe, incorporating many details about the aftermath of this profound event.
Heroine Pearline was faced with the loss of her parents and found herself opening her home to orphans. Hero Oliver struggled with his injury and self esteem because of it. But both had sincere faith in God that saw them through, brought them closer together and set their priorities right.
I was fascinated by the advancements in eye and plastic surgery of the times. And that so many people that were blinded in the explosion that a group founded an Institution for the Blind to train them.
I am enjoying learning new things from this historical series, Enduring Hope.

The Reluctant Healer of Halifax is a story of loss and healing. Set during one of the worst wartime home front disasters, readers will learn of the tragic event that forever marked the shores of Nova Scotia, Canada – the Halifax Explosion.

The story follows a young woman who loses much in the Explosion, but rises above it and provides a home for orphans. While caring for the youngsters, Pearline searches for her missing brother and tries to move beyond the heartache of a broken engagement.

There’s much historical detail – although timelines have been altered to fit within the story’s timeframe (the author’s note provides more information and is helpful in understanding the events). Readers are given a “peek” into the inquiry that followed the accident in the harbour which outlines what actually happened that day. As well, readers are shown the massive contribution that the people of Boston made to the relief efforts.

I wasn't sure who the "healer" is supposed to be (as the title implies, despite how catchy it is) - Pearline was a nursing school dropout, Oliver needed to heal, and the Trimbles were happy to be working in the hospital as a doctor and nurse.

This is the second work of fiction that I have read centered around the historical event of the Great Halifax Explosion on December 6, 1917, yet I was still unprepared for the enormous devastation that occurred that day. An estimated 2,000 people were killed, and an estimated 8,000 were injured when two ships collided in Halifax Harbour. Hundreds were permanently blinded. Over one third of the victims were under the age of fifteen.

Terrie Todd makes readers aware of the big picture, but also skillfully makes the disaster personal for two fictional families and thus to the readers of The Reluctant Healer of Halifax. This multi-themed story deals with being able to do more than you ever thought possible when the need arises, sacrificing ones own needs and concerns for those of others, and perseverance coming through the testing of one's faith. This book is a wonderful read, and the enjoyment of that experience would be multiplied with opportunities to discuss the story with others along the way, making it an ideal book club selection.

The Reluctant Healer of Halifax is the 6th book in the "Enduring Hope" series, and the first book I have read by Terrie Todd. I have enjoyed every book I've read of the series.

I was captivated from the beginning of The Reluctant Healer of Halifax, and willingly lost sleep while reading. I have a deep interest in the history of Nova Scotia, since I have ancestry origins there, so I was especially interested in this novel based on a true event.

The characters are complex and well developed. I enjoyed watching their faith and relationships grow throughout the story. Oliver was a little frustrating at times, the way he thought he knew what was best for Pearline, without even giving her a choice.

Sophia especially captured my heart, and twisted my heart for her and what she witnessed and experienced. If you have a sensitive imagination, there might be parts of this story you may want to avoid, especially when Sophia was describing her drawings in her sketchbook. It is, after all, a story based on a horrific disaster.

If you enjoy historical fiction, with a touch of romance and a dose of faith, I highly recommend this one for your TBR list. Read the full review on my blog.

I truly hope that I can convey how emotional this book was to me. This was the first time that I have heard about the facts surrounding this story. Even though this book is fiction, the premise of the story is based on actual facts that happened in Canada. This is only the second book that I have read from this author and I love her writing. You can tell research was done on this story and yet while it's heartbreaking, it will make you feel that you are right in the middle of the destruction. The scenes can be graphic and will make you want to cry, but it is well written. What I enjoyed from the book is the hymns that will make you want to sing along also the Scripture that is throughout the book. Even through the devastation there is hope. The story centers around Pearline and her family and their neighbors across the street, the Hamiltons. I also like that at the end of the book is information about where I can follow up on actual events that took place during the time frame. I want to thank Netgalley and the publisher for being able to read a copy of this book. All opinions are what I thought of the story.

The Reluctant Healer of Halifax by Terrie Todd is the latest novel in the Enduring Hope series. It takes place in the early 1900s during WWI in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, where the Halifax explosion occurred, killing many and wounding countless others. This is mainly the story of Pearline Campbell, a single young lady, and Sgt. Oliver Hamilton, a single young man who is in love with Pearline. When Oliver comes home from France with a war injury that has taken his one eye and severely disfigured his face, will Pearline and his love survive? And will Pearline's missing brother, Benjamin, ever be found?

This book is quite the heavy read dealing with the horrific aftermath of the Halifax explosion. Even amidst all the tragedy, however, there is hope as new buildings are constructed and new families are made. Faith in God also plays a key role If you enjoy historical fiction, this would be a good fit for you. The Reluctant Healer of Halifax releases Aug 1, 2026.
