Jim is the only one in the first grade who is scared of The Thing on television. He feels so ashamed. No one else is afraid. He won't even play Super Heroes with the rest of the class. When Jim watches "The Thing" on television he doesn't like it at all. It's scary to him. When he gets to school the next day the other students are going on about how great it was. They all try to do daring things during lunch, but not Jim. When one of the kids is busy being tough he doesn't realize that there is a bug on him. He freaks out when another kid points it out. Everyone wants to squash it but Jim comes to the rescue by gently removing the insect and placing him by a tree. After that the other kids respect Jim's ability to handle what they consider to be a "creepy creature."
