The Toxic Consumer: Living Healthy in a Hazardous World

Rate this book
Be scared, be very scared: toxic chemicals are in thousands of everyday products…and then they become part of our blood, our fat, our bodies. The chemicals that make things non-stick, flexible, flame-retardant, or stain-resistant are implicated in a staggering range of health issues, from birth defects to the rising rates of certain cancers.
More than ever, we want to know how to make informed, responsible choices about what we buy, for our own good and for the good of our planet. The Toxic Consumer provides the answers, precisely and accessibly. And you don’t need to be a scientist to understand the information. One by one, the guide breaks down such noxious substances as PFCs, phthalates, perchloroethylene, and formaldehyde and explains what each one is and what threats it poses, what items contain these poisons, and how they interact with our bodies and well-being. Then it outlines healthier options for bedding, flooring, cosmetics, clothing, food and drink, and everything else we need, making positive recommendations that will help us to reduce our exposure to proven harmful toxic chemicals in our daily lives.

Holy crap, we're doomed. Ok, maybe not entirely but I will say that it's worse than I thought. It's good to be informed & make sure you can do what you can to actually minimize exposure to toxic items. I guess when you think about how easy it is for these things to end up on your clothes, in the air, in your food, etc. it makes it hard to get away from them. You have to really think about what you're buying & bringing into your home. It's informative for the author to go through how there are certain items or places that tend to be more toxic than others. Learning about how these hazards can be limited but not completely eliminated is a step in the right direction, as knowing is half the battle. Certain things can be avoided, others not so much. Be wise about reading ingredients, of course some of them are so scientifically long & burdensome that it's simply daunting. If you can pay more attention & be cognizant then do so. So read this & share it so you can be informed, knowledge is power.

Great book. Not a bunch of scare tactics or anything. Just facts abut what we know and don't know about all the chemicals in our homes, toilettries, cleaners, etc. Also has tips on what you can do about it and alternatives. A must read for everyone.
