Night Lights

Rate this book
New book, Night Lights, from Indie Author Tess Seda comes 4 years after the release of her second collection. This book discernably is a different addition to her usual work.

It is composed in such a way that takes the reader on a journey through the ups and downs of CPTSD, PTSD and similar circumstances. The standout component is under most of the pieces she writes a portion related to the prose that reads as a personal message to a friend. The message is uplifting as if you could turn to those pages alone when you need a boost and find her giving you a needed pep talk. As the book progresses you find the pieces take on more strength, light, and inspiration akin to someone removing themselves from a difficult situation and coming to a better place of mind and spirit. Weaving different styles of writing throughout gives it a refreshing diversity to the poetry in-between the prose and pep-talks.

Coming to the end of the book you find the title is aptly named for the theme and the emotions she captures in this literary journey. There is light in the darkness with more to come.

A tender, vulnerable, and quietly powerful read

I devoured this book in one sitting. Tessie’s writing has always had heart, but this one feels like she’s really stepping into herself as an author. There’s a rawness here — not unpolished rawness, but the kind that comes from someone writing honestly about things they’ve lived through and survived.

What stood out most to me is the way she balances heaviness with hope. Even in the messiest, most painful moments, there’s always a thread of gentleness running through her words. It made me feel like I was being spoken to by someone who understands the darker corners people end up in, but refuses to leave them there.

Her voice is still evolving — there are sections where you can feel her shifting gears stylistically — but that actually made the experience feel more intimate to me. It’s like watching someone learn to trust their own strength and softness at the same time. And some of the pieces in this book hit harder than anything she’s written before.

What I appreciated most is how much compassion is woven into the pages. Not the fluffy kind — the kind that feels earned, like someone reaching back to pull others out of the places they once stood. There’s a quiet bravery in that, and it shines through.

Highly recommend, and honestly my favorite of her books so far.
