The need for a critical biography of John A. Broadus has been met in this volume. Eric Smith sets forth the complexities of Broadus as one of the great figures in SBC and American evangelical life. Highly recommend this volume!

Smith has written a sympathetic yet critical biography of John A. Broadus. Instead of side-stepping or down-playing Broadus and company's "Old South" and racial views, Smith shows how these views shaped these men and how they in turn shaped generations of Southern Baptist men and women. It was, at times, an uncomfortable read but it was, in my opinion, a good read.
