Being from Sturgeon Bay, I knew about this tragic event. Palmer fills in background and some details to recreate the drama and trauma. Such tragic loss; such amazing strength to survive it; such a challenge to live with it.
It’s hard to imagine how traumatizing the events depicted in Into the storm was for Patsy Smith. Her story is a remarkable one of courage and resilience. Well worth a read!
I shed quite a few tears... My husband and I both worked for Richard Stearn (Suzanne's boyfriend in the book) in the late '70s/'80s so we have a personal connection to the story. By that time, Dick (Mr. Stearn to us) had his own marine architect and engineering firm here in Sturgeon Bay, located on the water and down the road from the shipyard. The book provided me with facts I hadn't known before so I am grateful for that history. Thank you, Jamie Kay Palmer!
I love historical fiction and this definitely was a page turner for me. The strength and perseverance of this young woman was incredible. I am surprised that this story wasn’t more widely known before Jamie wrote this amazing book. It’s a story those of us in Door County should all be aware of!
