Kings of Heart #3

Break the Rule

Rate this book
Charlie King:

As free-spirited as he is chaotic, Charlie's rules to art and relationships are as follows: 1) get messy and 2) move on to the next piece. He lives for the thrill of the new, on canvas or in bed, and just because he's over 30 doesn't mean he needs to settle down. When a pretty boy wearing a scowl and a skirt, upends Charlie's life, he brings one more rule: don't fall in love. But when feelings splatter and paint spills, Charlie has to decide if his rules still apply.

Eden Montgomery:
Nothing in life is permanent. That Eden knows to be true. A safe haven baby abandoned into a broken foster care system that didn’t know how to handle a queer, gender non-conforming kid, Eden’s used to being discarded and used. At twenty years old, Eden’s clawed his way out of his traumatic past with paint chipped nails, a myriad of invisible scars, and mismatched tattoos. He doesn’t want or need anyone new in his life, but when a free spirited artist who isn’t put off by Eden’s prickly exterior finds his way past Eden’s defenses and into his heart there’s only one thing left for Eden to figure out, if he’s willing to risk everything for love or if he’s going to do what he’s always done—run.

Break the Rule is a character-driven, fast burn, standalone MM romance. It is the third book in the Kings of Heart series, each featuring one of the four King brothers on their sometimes messy, sometimes tender paths to happy ever after. Break the Rule features a chaotic playboy artist who falls into limerance and love with an equally queer, closed off black cat type. Get ready for an emotional rollercoaster, a runaway and someone willing to give chase, and eventually a guaranteed HEA.

from: an ARC Reader who in fact was finished by this book!
to: you who desperately needs to read this book!

🌟 5 “fuck you” STARS 🌟! (long review incoming)

there are a lot of books that make you emotional, sure. but there are few books that make you sob, this was one of those! am i sobbing whilst writing this? maybe! did i reread the book? definitely!

if you’re going into this book expecting a typical, fast paced, high spice, hard earned hookup romance between two persons then you’d be sorely mistaken. this book isn’t even a love story between two people.

it’s a love story between: Charlie & Andrew, Charlie & Alex, Charlie & His Pets, Charlie & His Art, Charlie & His Crocs, Charlie & His Larger and Louder than Life Personality, Charlie & His Mismatched Clothing, Charlie & His Fierce Need to Protect, Charlie & Being Taken Care Of, Charlie & His Sexuality, Charlie & Submitting, Charlie & His Patience, Charlie & His Eden.

it’s a love story between: Eden & Addy, Eden & His Bracelets, Eden & Ella, Eden & His Skirts, Eden & His Hair, Eden & Andrew, Eden & Feeling Safe, Eden & Trust, Eden & Finally being in Control, Eden & The Word “Fuck”, Eden & Himself, Eden & Life, Eden & Understanding What it Truly Means to be Wanted, Eden & Staying, Eden & His Charlie.

Eden, my fierce, beautiful baby (ik he’d riot at me calling him that) (yes Ella, ik he’s yours first). he is everything that’s right with the world. a broken boy that still deserves the light to shine through his cracks but doesn’t know how to allow it. he’s prickly, defensive and curses at every turn but his love is aggressive and despite not knowing how to, it’s sure & certain. he’s faced so much prejudice and so much pain and thinks that’s all there is to life BUT “fucking” Charlie. Charlie who wouldn’t leave him alone. Charlie who respects him, doesn’t ask questions and understands the words NO. Charlie who sees beyond his surface. Charlie who knows how to knock at the door of his defenses and be patient. Charlie who doesn’t get turnt off by his thorns. Charlie who smiles at him and doesn’t sneer. Charlie who doesn’t take but gives. Charlie who makes him care and want things. Charlie who holds him and calls him baby. Charlie who sees bright blue eyes and silky blonde hair but doesn’t see a doll to play with but something to cherish, immortalize through art.

Charlie, our neurospicy, golden retriever, ray of sunshine. he’s oblivious at times, he’s loud, he’s messy, he’s perfect! the way assumes his role to protect Andrew and his brothers especially Alec is so cute. he and Andrew are a packaged deal and he’s never giving that up, he thinks he has it all; his twin, his brothers, his art, his mole, his hookups… it’s “easy”. BUT Eden. Eden with his bright blue eyes and angel hair. Eden with his pretty eye makeup. Eden with his “fuck yous”. Eden with his sarcasm and witty remarks. Eden who wouldn’t give him his name. Eden who is authentic and blunt. Eden who makes him work for it. Eden with his rules and need for control. Eden whose lips say “fuck off” but his eyes say “please don’t”. Eden who consumes and accepts him. Eden who takes care of him. Eden who loves and understands Andrew. Eden who is everything he needs and wants.

💘“You’re exactly the kind of forever I want, Eden. Messy, beautiful, real. You’re exactly what I want and what I need.”
Eden huffs, closing his eyes before resting his forehead on Charlie’s shoulder.
“I hate how much I love you.”
“I know, baby.” Charlie rubs his hands up and down Eden’s back.
“I do though.” His voice drops, barely above a whisper. “Love you.”
“I love you, too.”💘

ultimately it’s a love story between Charlie, Eden and Us, the readers. very few authors can capture the beauty of the romance between two persons when it starts as “hook ups” or “spice first, feelings later” but we’re lucky enough that Lucky is a mastermind at what she does. the story itself apart from the romance is gut wrenchingly beautiful. the characters all stand out and add significantly to the plot but never take away from Eden & Charlie; they all perfectly fit. the representation?? seeing Coach’s son who he was worried about because he loves tutus, meeting Eden and feeling seen? the gentle way he spoke to him and how grateful his mom was? TEARS!!!

Andrew spoke to me in a way that a character never has before and this isn’t even his book but that goes to show how gorgeous the writing is. I can see why Eden gravitates to him and is fiercely protective of him because in my head we’re bestfriends. 🤭😹

✨ “You need a change of scenery. You’ve been bitchy all week and—”
“I’m not bitchy,” Charlie interrupts.
“You put the B in bitch this week,” Andrew calmly replies.” ✨

special mention to Ella Bella! She is the most precious babygirl there’s ever been. She’s so intuitive, intelligent and sassy. She calls Eden hers and she means it! I love her soooo much 🥹💖

💖 “Yup.” Ella rolls onto her side, kissing Eden’s cheek. “I love you.”
Eden is unsure he will ever be able to ever put into words what it feels like to be loved by someone who only sees the good in the world—who only sees the good in Eden.
“I love you too, Ella Bella.” He tickles her tummy, smiling when she giggles.”💖

i feel honored to witness this book. this love shared between all the characters and definitely this love between Lucky and her writing. Seeing Alec & Theo, Jason & His Emmy and Andrew all together again was magical. The way they welcomed Ella and Addy! Amanda and Denise? ummm yes! 🤌🏾 Eden has the most beautiful found family and Charlie has his hands filled lmao. I agree with Eden & Charlie … to experience something as equally terrifying and exhilarating … I would Break (All) The Rules! 💖

“You’re my color, Eden Montgomery. You make everything brighter and more beautiful.”

I was lucky enough to be an ARC reader for this book, and man what a book it was! I loved it from beginning to end, though I came to hear more about Emerson from a different perspective I soon feel in love with Charlie and Eden and their complicated dynamic. Charlie is the most loveable, chaotic, golden retriever menace and Eden I just want to wrap in a blanket, give a hot chocolate to, and tell him I love him until he believes it. These two were so perfect for each other and that ending was everything I needed until I wait for the next book. Man those King men really know how to get emotions from you and I’m completely obsessed with the series, if I wasn’t already thanks to Make the Play.

Riley Hart knocked this one out of the park and it’s definitely a must read!

This book was ok.

While I will go in on why it was just ok, I do want to give credit to the author for putting at the front that none of this work was done with AI. For a Kindle Unlimited book, it was a nice recognition.

In the author’s note, Hart talks about how one of the protagonists, Charlie, is her favorite character. I think that put expectations out there for me to genuinely like this character and I didn’t. I didn’t understand him. He’s a successful painter in his 30s who behaves like a child and everyone around him willingly takes extra burdens for him and it doesn’t make any sense. Since this is the third in the series, Hart has explored mental health and different diagnoses before so it’s odd that a writer that understands the mind has him as undiagnosed and untreated ADHD when other characters in the same family are diagnosed.

While Charlie isn’t that fun to read, the second protagonist wasn’t much better. Eden is a child of the foster system and takes on all the neglect and outwardly projects an “attack first” attitude so he doesn’t get hurt. It’s not fun to read.

Hart continues to tell not show. They don’t give us opportunities to make our own conclusions but rather tells us what the two main characters are thinking. It’s a bit frustrating.

What saved this book for me was the supporting characters. Previous characters from the other two books show up frequently as does Charlie’s twin brother, Andrew. They were fun to read and see how they’ve grown from their respective stories. I am looking forward to Andrew’s book as his character has been consistent the entire time and seems like an interesting character.

Whyyyyyyyyy 32 years old and 20 years old. Whyyyyyy. It would change literally nothing to make Eden 25!

So much page time on the kid.

So much arguing and so much trauma. I don’t think Charlie had a positive conversation with Andrew 99% of the time.

Not rating cuz this book has so much in it that I despise, and still despise, but I did love the first two and wanted to give it a chance.

okay so this is my first ever ARC review, but i knew that i absolutely had to sign up when Lucky posted it. “Make the Play” is my favorite book ever. i was really nervous that nothing would be able to live up to it, but this one is on the same level. i shouldn’t have been worried bc Lucky has proved yet again that she is a master at character and plot development.

this book gave me something that the first two didn’t: a deeper look inside of the twins’ relationship with one another. i love charlie and andrew’s dynamic, and when you add eden to the mix, it was amazing. it was clear from the beginning that charlie’s love interest would need to view andrew as a friend and family member, not just treat him as being tolerated. Lucky did a fantastic job at showing this, even before eden and charlie’s relationship even began. i mean the first scene had charlie’s hook up being acephobic and twincesty toward andrew. that’s an immediate “i hate you” from both charlie AND me.

i wasn’t sure how i was going to love a relationship as much as jason and emerson, but i think charlie and eden’s is just as loved by me (but in a very different way). jason and emerson are both sweeties and adorable. while eden and charlie have moments where they are sweet and/or adorable (eden, pls don’t tell me to “fuck off” bc i said that, i’m sorry!!), charlie and eden have more banter. i loved their banter and interactions so much.

have y’all listened to “the fate of ophelia” from taylor swift’s new album? bc it literally makes me think of charlie and eden!! quotes from taylor’s song that remind me of them:
✨”And if you’d never come for me, I might’ve drowned in the melancholy. I swore my loyalty to me, myself, and I, right before you lit my sky up.”
✨”All that time I sat alone in my tower, You were just honing your powers, Now I can see it all. Late one night, You dug me out of my grave and Saved my heart from the fate of Ophelia.”
✨”don’t care where the hell you’ve been, ‘cause now your mine. It’s ’bout to be the sleepless night you’ve been dreaming of.”
✨”And if you'd never come for me, I might've lingered in purgatory. You wrap around me like a chain, a crown, a vine. Pulling me into the fire.”
✨”No longer drowning and deceived. All because you came for me.”
✨”You saved my heart from the fate of Ophelia.”

in other news, i never agreed with how charlie still treated theo and his relationship with alec, so i was obvi on alec’s side during this argument. it was completely reasonable (even with the casserole casualty) and i especially enjoyed seeing theo comfort alec. charlie was def in the wrong here and it’s interesting to not side with the main character on this. charlie should have told alec, and i get why he didn’t, but it definitely was unwise to wait until the day of.

the climax involving andrew’s past trauma with that acephobic asshole was absolutely needed, but still sad to read. eden’s realization of who it was and the way they handled zach really made me proud of both of them. eden being angry at charlie for andrew’s sake was amazing. like he truly cares about andrew and will stand up against anyone for him—even charlie. and the fact that charlie didn’t even know about it just shows how much andrew is the “oldest sibling who struggles in silence and feels responsible to help everyone else”. i’m sooo excited for his book (and his hockey player?).

this book really just proved how much i love all the king bros and can’t wait for andrew’s turn. i need to see him be accepted and loved in a way that his brother’s aren’t able to do. (or andrew doesn’t allow them to do.) i really hope i get to be an ARC reader for it.

oh also, Lucky, can we get a bonus of eden meeting the parents from eden’s pov? i’m so excited to read andrew’s book. i just know it’s gonna hit me hard, as i relate to him a lot (as a fellow older sibling that takes care of everyone).

The rest of this review is basically just quotes from the book and my thoughts when I read them. i literally had 77 highlights, so i’m going to include the most notable below (RIP the highlights about how crocs are a superior shoe and Eden's friendship with Andrew). note: 🎨 means it’s charlie’s pov and 💄 means it’s eden’s pov (still third person for both). also, there weren’t any crocs/converse or energy drink emojis, or else i would have used those. if there is also a 🌶️ emoji with it, that means it’s spicy on some level (though, I didn't include the spiciest scenes, but if you like consensual degradation, you should really check out this book!). [Brackets] mean that it is my own thoughts on what I just quoted.

💄(p. 47) His gender isn’t reliant on his strict adherence to made up social norms, and he’s just fucking tired of having to pretend he doesn’t care how much people look at him.
[My enby heart agrees fully.]

🎨(p. 63)“You are the nosiest asshole I’ve ever met,” Andrew snorts. “Did you know that?”
“Yes, I did. You should get me a shirt that says ‘nosy asshole and proud of it.’”
“The horrible thing is you’d probably wear it.”
Charlie pretends to mull the idea over, but there’s really no question, and the answer is easy. “Damn right I’d wear it.”
“Guess you know what you’re getting for Christmas this year.”
[I really love their brotherly dynamic.]

🎨(p. 71)“What if I don’t want to leave?” Charlie protests, despite agreeing with Andrew. There’s like a little flaw in his brain where even when he agrees with someone, he needs to argue about it first. “I wanted to see Emerson in a suit.”
“I’ll throw the entire couch at you if you don’t leave,” Jason says in a tone that Charlie probably shouldn’t test.
He tests it anyway.
“You’re kind of testy when you’re in love.”
[I love seeing Jason and Emmy scenes through Charlie's perspective. Also, Jason being threatening violence, then thirty minutes later being all sweet to Emmy and telling him they can go home to eat peanut butter sandwiches and watch LOTR.]

🎨🌶️(p. 103)“Are you a good boy, Charlie?”
“Fuck no,” Charlie laughs. “But I am a respectful one.”
“Being good is overrated anyway,”
[I really love the “respectful” disclaimer. This might be one of my favorite responses to this question.]

🎨(p. 145)“Fine, I earn you some money, and you put up with me because you and Denise are obsessed with Andrew.”
“All lesbians need their emotional support queer man.”
[yes, i agree that andrew king is this.]

🎨🌶️(p. 214)“You have such a pretty mouth, Charlie…[some words between Eden saying this] You know what it’s good for, don’t you?”
“Telling you how beautiful you are?” Charlie smirks, unable to resist a bit of playful teasing. Especially because it’s true.
[This made me laugh and I could fully picture the scene in my head.]

💄(p. 223) “Because you’re weird,” Eden blurts.
“Fair.” Charlie’s smile widens. “Being weird is great. Keeps all the normies away.”
“Are you saying I’m not normal?”
“Nope. But that’s a good thing.”
“Why’s that?” Eden asks, heart pounding when Charlie suddenly inches into his personal space, towering over him. He’s stupidly tall and stupidly handsome with his stupidly bright smile, and Eden isn’t sure if he wants to hit him or kiss him or maybe cry.
“It’s why I like you.”
Five words. Five little words.
“Shut up, Charlie.”
[yes, i embrace the weird in me too. i needed to include this bc of that and bc it was cute.]

💄(p. 297) His body is a buffer, not a weapon, and something in Eden shatters into so many fucking pieces, he’s not sure how the fuck he’s ever going to put them back together.
[This line hit me hard.]

🎨(p. 316) “You’re the best, you know that?”
“Of fucking course I know that,” Alec says, expression brightening. “You’re all so goddamn lucky to have me. Mom and Dad’s accidental pregnancy was the best thing to ever happen to this family. You’re welcome.”
[Oh Alexander King, how I love you for being exactly who you are.]

💄(p. 331) Is this what it’s like to have supportive parents?
“Mama, it has a bow,” Sawyer exclaims, crawling closer to Eden. “I want a bow!”
“I’ll get you a bow,” she tells him, her smile so wide it breaks something in Eden.
What would it be like to be a child and be so loved? To be accepted?
[This whole scene meant the world to me. I loved the callback to Eddie’s kid wearing skirts and how supportive Sawyer’s parents were. Also, broke my heart when Eden reacted to it, because he DESERVED to have had this growing up.]

🎨(p. 361) “Do you ever get tired of being right?” Charlie sighs.
“Nope,” Andrew replies with a self-satisfied grin.
[I am Andrew in this entire scene. Also, the fact that Alec compared Eden to Theo was needed and I really didn’t think about it until he said it. Oh and I loved that Andrew was going to schedule them an intervention if they didn't make up within another day.]

💄(p. 369) “Fuck you, Charlie King.” Eden slams his fists into Charlie’s chest, desperately, painfully, dizzyingly angry at this goddamn man for making him care. “I hate you so much for making me want things I have never, ever wanted. I hate you for making me laugh. I hate you for holding me. I hate you for wearing stupid clothes I can’t hate. I hate you for coming back again and again, even when I run. I hate you so much because…because I don’t hate you. Why can’t I hate you?”
[This is my love language.]

💄(p. 371) “…My life was black and white without you, Eden.”
“Charlie.”
“You’re my color, Eden Montgomery. You make everything brighter and more beautiful.”
[This is also my love language.]

🎨(p. 416) “So, forever?” Charlie prompts.
“Someone has to put up with you,” Eden grumbles, his hold on Charlie tightening.
“You say the sweetest things.”
“Fuck off.”
“There you go with another one. Such a sweet talker.”
[Eden’s love language is “fuck off” and “shut up”, we have that in common.]

⭐️and that's ONLY 15 out of the 77 highlights that I had (well 16 if you count the opening quote I used). This book was amazing and I really enjoyed it. I recommend it to everyone who may feel that they are not special enough to be loved. Please check it out, and give it some love when it comes out on 11/13/2025.

Well. Ooooooookay then. This is now a book I have read.

I skipped the first in this series because I'm not into those tropes but I liked the second - it was very cute. I decided to read this one because, when done well, a reformed playboy (especially one who falls first/harder) can be such a delicious treat. I normally steer clear of playboy MCs and I figured that if I didn't like this one, it would stem from that - like, maybe there would be a bunch of other person drama, or he would still be hooking up once he'd been with the LI, or he'd be constantly comparing sex with the LI to sex with other people during smut scenes (so common, so unnecessary), etc. The comparing the LI to others was the only one of those things present (all the way through the end, ugh) so that wasn't the problem. No, the reason that I didn't like this one very much wasn't because of the playboy MC's promiscuous ways - it was because of him as a person.

Charlie was a chaotic, pansexual, ADHD coded artist (and the playboy in question). He should have been a joy to read. He should have been a big, brash shit stirrer with high key gremlin energy but a heart of gold. He should have been the kind of man who could be a good match for a traumatized black cat with very sharp claws. And admittedly, he was some of those things.

But the part that was such a letdown for me was that I didn't think he was actually that good of a man. I don't think he had a heart of gold or thought about how his actions impacted other people almost at all. And I'm not even talking about the sleeping around. I'm talking about how he treated his brothers and Eden. He was so flippant about everything and he burdened those around him - especially his twin, Andrew. If I was Andrew, I would've left his ass to rot a long time ago. It's totally ok to need help from others with executive functioning tasks - but not putting any effort at all into finding strategies that don't involve putting it all on someone else is a dick move. Dude is 32. See a fucking therapist and come up with some plans to care for yourself in literally any way. How was he participating in a relationship with anyone outside of being an emotional vampire? And then he'd occasionally do shit that he knew dysregulated Andrew - on purpose! For a reaction. That's sociopath behavior. How he treated Alec later in the story? What a prick. And the worst part is that he doesn't even really feel remorse for these things. He's just pouty because people are mad at him for incredibly valid reasons.

I know in a romance the relationship between the MCs should be the most important part but he was kind of a dick to Eden in the beginning, too. He was a little creepy/stalkerish and he said and did a few things that pushed Eden's boundaries (in a very obvious way). I will admit that in the latter half of the book he was a lot better with Eden and was mostly patient and caring and affectionate. Maybe if all of the interactions he had with his brothers had been excluded it would've been different. Maybe if they hadn't shown him using his charm to be subtly disrespectful (wasting his agent's time, harassing his brother's boyfriend, exasperating the tailor) it would've been different. But it wasn't. I wanted to like him so bad and instead I'm pissed off, writing a fucking essay on his flaws.

I did like Eden. I know he was an asshole but he was the kind of extreme black cat that I really love. And the important part is that he was so, so good to Addy and Ella. And he was good to Andrew. He cared about people (well, the ones he didn't hate). I thought he was pretty well realized for mostly being a trauma response dressed up in a skirt. Crazy to think that I felt like he was the more empathetic between the two MCs when half of his dialogue was just "fuck you". But I loved him - wish I had energy left to say nice things about him. Honestly, the stars are just for him and his little family unit and the cats and dogs (and maybe the hamster, I guess).

There were other things that didn't work for me - the weird miscommunication during their first hookup (that was awkwardly thrown in just so they could argue), the 4 year old with the emotional intelligence of a 12 year old (she was cute but didn't feel age appropriate), and the fucking repetition. My god, there were so many statements that were repeated throughout (nearly verbatim), sometimes even just a few pages apart or within the same scene. It was maddening.

I love Andrew (he's sassy and has his shit together) and initially wanted to read his book (it sounds like there's a hockey player LI too!) but, honestly, I probably won't because where Andrew goes, so too does Charlie. And I do not have the bandwidth.

Pet names: baby, slut and whore (affectionately)

Well, that settles that question. Charlie’s a dipshit with questionable judgment and taste. Eden is a walking red flag. He knows it, other people know it. Charlie must know it.

Ella rolls onto her side, kissing Eden’s cheek. “I love you.” Eden is unsure he will ever be able to ever put into words what it feels like to be loved by someone who only sees the good in the world—who only sees the good in Eden.

“I’m seeing him again tonight.” “By him, do we mean the guy you’re completely obsessed with?” “I’m not obsessed with anyone,” Charlie protests. “My mistake, some other man must have a studio full of paintings of his crush.”

“Twenty fucking years on this stupid fucking planet and I fucking hate everyone. Let me hate you.” “Eden.” “Why can’t I hate you?” Eden croaks, the declaration so small and broken.

“I have one more rule.” “What kind of rule?” “Don’t fall in love with me,” Eden’s voice cracks. “I’m not…just don’t.” “Eden.” “That’s the rule,” Eden whispers, and a part of Charlie’s heart twists.

“If either of you says one more nice thing about me, I’m fucking leaving,” Eden interrupts, pretty sure he might throw up if he has to listen to them for one second longer.

Safety (may contain spoilers)

SA/rape: Eden was a sex worker during a period of time as a teenager when he was living on the street. Nothing on page, nothing detailed, but it certainly effected how he felt about sex, consent, power, etc. And obviously that's ALL rape.

Other person drama: Honestly, none really. Charlie calls himself a slut every 5 seconds and there's some commentary on people he's been with but there's nothing specific and there's no former hookups around or anything - opens with the morning after a ONS but it's brief. The most obnoxious part to me was just that occasionally, in his head, Charlie would compare Eden to other people he's had sex with during a sex scene which drives me crazy but there were too many other things to be mad about.

I’ve said it with every new book in this series, and I’ll say it again now, I absolutely ADORE the King brothers.

The third book in the series is Charlie and Eden. Charlie and Eden were messy, chaotic, broken and beautiful all wrapped up in one. I loved them so much. Charlie, for all his chaos, and unwavering love for his brothers especially Andrew. Eden for his vulnerability, and being his unapologetic self.

Break the Rule has a different vibe from the first two books in the series. It’s a much faster burn, and spicier, but still serves the same depth of feelings and love between the characters that draws you in. Charlie and Eden had that instant connection that burned quickly, while feelings came slower, even if Eden fought against it so hard. Charlie was so freaking patient with Eden and instantly accepted him for who he was, and gave him what he needed.

Seeing Eden “fuck you” Montgomery slowly start to believe he could be wanted and loved by Charlie after years of believing he wasn’t worth it, made my heart so very happy. And seeing his friendship with Andrew and how protective he was of him, just made me adore him even more.

Andrew’s story is up next, and I can’t wait to see him get the love he deserves so much.

Lucky writes amazing characters that I am so in love and obsessed with. I absolutely adore this series and Eden feels so perfect for Charlie. It’s the epitome of the black cat/golden retriever trope but it’s done so so so well. I also appreciate someone who says “fuck” as much as I do…

“…he’s pretty sure a well placed ‘fuck you’ might just be Eden’s love language.”

-

“You stupid fucking man. I’m a horrible fucking choice.”
“I disagree.”
“Of fucking course you do, you stubborn fucking idiot.”

Like, same.

“Take it from someone who knows what it’s like to be loved by Charlie. I don’t think I’m special either. What I think doesn’t seem to matter. Charlie’s always seen the beauty in things others dismissed. It’s what makes him so special.”

I’m obsessed with Andrew and Charlie’s dynamic so much. All of the King brothers are just so sweet and perfect in their own ways and I had an absolute great time from start to finish with this book!!

“I want a messy life, baby. That’s where the most beautiful moments happen. I don’t want things to be perfect or easy. I want a messy, colorful life. I want you.”

While this book was completely different than the first two in the Kings of Heart series, it really shines in its own way. Charlie is an absolutely beautiful disaster and it’s hard not to love him and his golden retriever personality. But Eden, oh Eden. 🥺 Eden is the kind of character who really stays with you after you finish a novel; his backstory is absolutely heartbreaking and yet he’s so strong for surviving and pushing past his fears of abandonment and eventually letting Charlie into his heart. Their dynamic was so unique to them and I loved how easy it was for Charlie to fall even though Eden didn’t feel like he was an easy person to love or that he was deserving of Charlie. Everyone deserves to be loved and shown that they’re worthy no matter their past, and Charlie proved time and time again he would always follow Eden’s lead and make sure he knew he was safe with Charlie.

Side note: I absolutely LOVED all of the cameos from the other brothers/characters (Jason and his Emmy & my girl Mabel 🫶🏻) and I cannot wait for Andrew’s book! I just know whoever Andrew ends up with will worship the ground he walks on and deservedly so!!

Lucky Hart is an author of astonishing depth and clarity.

Eden is a hard character to love — and that’s the point. He’s as prickly as can be because of all the hurt and trauma he carries inside him. But yet, Charlie King — because leave it to those King boys — wants Eden more than life itself. (That’s not a spoiler; this is an MM romance, you know what you’re signing up for here.) And you will root as hard as you ever have for these two.

BREAK THE RULE covers some heavy territory — definitely read the warnings at the front of the book. But it’s worth it, just as Charlie knows Eden is worth it. Eden is messy, and Charlie is messy in completely different ways, and if you can’t relate to at least some of their mess, well: what are you, perfect? 😏

This, the third book in Hart’s KINGS OF HEART series, is quite an achievement. As someone who doesn’t like my MM romances dark, Hart took me down some roads I wasn’t sure I wanted to travel, but they were ultimately so breathtakingly rewarding. If you’ve read previous books in the series, and you absolutely should, you’ll be happy to get good-sized helpings of Charlie’s brothers — and you get to experience some of the events from Emerson and Jason’s story in MAKE THE PLAY through Charlie’s eyes here, which is quite a thrill. Not to mention that we get a lot more of Andrew here, who’ll be the focus of the final book in the quartet about the King brothers. (Can’t wait!)

Whether you’re more like Charlie, or more like Eden, or not even really like either of them, I promise you that by the end of BREAK THE RULE you’ll have fallen for both of them. Lucky Hart just goes from strength to strength; they’re one of the best MM romance writers around right now, and I for one am quite grateful for their life-affirming work.

(I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an early review.)

This is tough to describe: It’s not a rom-com, but it has humor. Both main characters are somewhat unlikable but yet I still loved them. There is a lot of trauma to unpack and it feels like their love story is never going to land, but it does.

Charlie is a very outgoing somewhat abrasive artist who dresses in whatever he likes and is a self proclaimed slut. He has a twin brother, Andrew, and he prioritizes Andrew and his art above everything, and after having several partners try to push Andrew aside, he decided that he’s happy w one night stands.

He meets Eden one night at his gallery when Eden is a server during an event. He thinks he’s beautiful and is enthralled by him. Eden grew up in foster care after being abandoned by his drug addict birth mother. He was repeatedly rejected and returned to social services for being difficult and gender non-conforming. Eden then wound up being involved as a sex worker (at 16) to survive and was horribly mistreated. Eden believes he is unlovable and acts out against anyone who might care.

The exception to this is Addy and her 4 yr old daughter Ella whom he lives with. Addy saved him one night when she was pregnant, giving him a home and they have been together ever since.

This is the story of two people who swore they would never find love or a partner, finding each other on their own terms.

Read the author’s forward - she describes the story very accurately.

💔Third act breakups. This confused me and is the reason for the dropped star. Eden left after he got mad at a guest that Charlie invited to a Thanksgiving party, but I didn’t think that meant they “broke up”, but apparently I was wrong bc both Charlie and Eden cried separately for a week thinking it was over. Idk. Just seemed like a fight to me but 🤷🏻‍♀️. Also, Charlie was an absolute ass to invite this person and it went against his character, so it all seemed a bit fabricated to create drama.
🙃 age gap: Eden (20) and Charlie (32)
🗣️Communication - these two are very emotionally in tuned each other, but there is not a lot of direct communication.
🏳️‍🌈both out and gay (Eden)/bi (Charlie): Eden is gender non conforming and enjoys wearing dramatic make-up and skirts. Charlie also enjoys wearing non-conventional outfits but is more traditionally gender conforming.
🌶️Spice - these two communicate a lot thru their sex acts, which are frequent. Both are vers. Neither a virgin. Neither had ever been in a relationship.
🫣No OM - We know that Charlie was a “slut” but once he is with Eden, there is no one else.
🏠Family - Eden considers Addy and Ella his family and their are the cutest together. Charlie has his twin, Andrew, with him he shares everything. He also has two other brothers and their relationships are close, but a bit complicated. Mostly bc Charlie is an outspoken ass. I adored that Eden and Andrew had their own separate freindship.
☺️Two very loyal men who feel deeply despite trying to convince everyone that they don’t. Lol
😢Trauma - Eden has significant trust issues as a result of his early life and uses “fuck you” as an endearment. We see him grapple w this trauma throughout the story.
👥Dual POV; “I love you’s” and talking of forever in epilogue

Favorite parts;
- the way Charlie is so inspired by Eden and paints him almost obsessively.
- At the end, the way Eden can see Charlie’s love and acceptance thru all the different versions of him that he painted.
- Andrew - I hope his story is next - I loved how directly he spoke to Charlie and how much he cared about both of them.
- the beaded bracelet that Ella made for Eden and how it meant SO much to him. And then when she makes one for Charlie that had Eden’s name bc they have to share him. :)
- the way Charlie fights for them; he is not put off by Eden’s attitude.

Thank you so much @authorluckyhart for the advanced copy to review!

I have read and loved both books already out in this series and was over the moon to get the chance to read Charlie and Eden’s story early. They are such a great match. Charlie is so soft underneath his protective armor and Eden is so prickly and distrustful but can you blame him?? No, you cannot.

Charlie was *immediately* gone from his first glimpse at Eden and it was a treat watching this man who didn’t do relationships realize how deep he was in it. Eden’s first instinct was to run and protect himself and Charlie slowly broke down his walls. Eden’s love of his family (Addy and Ella) was so sweet and how Charlie won Ella over had me melting.

Their intimacy was fire, there was some degradation but it was not overwhelming. Eden’s need for control and Charlie’s willingness to let him be in control was so sexy and endearing. Charlie was so down bad he’d do anything and when he begged and crawled toward Eden in the same scene I was a gonerrrrr!! They also figured out their intimacy after sex and it was beautiful to watch their love grow. When Charlie promised to follow Eden 😭😭😭😭.

I’d be remiss to not mention my favorite King brothers always bringing the business. I loved how much we learn about Andrew in this book and how it overlapped with Jason and Emerson’s story! I also *loved* the fight between Alec and Charlie, it felt so incredibly real and my heart broke right along with Alec’s. When Andrew said people would rather hang out with Charlie than him, I cried. When that dickbag came to Thanksgiving, I cried too. But the King brothers always figure it out and their meddling pushed a Charlie and Eden back together. Those King brothers always melting my heart.

I cannot WAIT for the loml and king of my heart Andrew’s book after finishing this one.

A beautiful ending to a gorgeous story. 🥹🩷

In “Break the Rule,” Lucky Hart drops us back into the messy, addictive world of the King brothers — where loyalty is twisted, love is complicated, and everyone carries more emotional baggage than they want to admit. This book centers on the tension between Charlie and Eden, two people who circle each other with equal parts friction and attraction. Family expectations, old wounds, and the pressure of being a “King” shape a story that’s equal parts angst and character unraveling. It maintains that signature series balance of sharp dialogue, slow-burning tension, and a touch of emotional chaos.

Okay… Charlie. I get his appeal, I do — but wow, he tested my patience. He’s cocky in that way that isn’t charming so much as exhausting. Arrogant, sharp-tongued, a little too convinced of his own gravity. He never comprehensively won me over, and honestly, his attitude pulled me out of the story more than once. Eden, though? Eden felt like the grounding force of the whole book. I adored him. There’s something quieter, more vulnerable about him — that sense of not thinking he’s too good for anyone, and that tiny shadow that he might end up the one left behind. There were parts of him that felt familiar, relatable, almost personal.

Out of all three books, this is probably my least favorite — not bad by any means, just not hitting the highs of the first two. Still, the writing keeps you hooked, and the emotional stakes stay high enough to make the journey worth it. And honestly? I’m crossing my fingers for a fourth book. Andrew is the final brother and the most mysterious, and it feels like Lucky Hart is saving something big for him. I want that story. -4 Stars!

*****

To say that I liked this book is an understatement because I LOVED it!!! Charlie and Eden stole my heart and I can say that they are my new favorites.

I loved the relationship between these two because it was fast in some ways but slow in the ways that mattered, I felt that they were REAL, and that was the best part for me. I fell in love with Eden as a character from the very beginning I just wanted to give him a hug and tell him that everything would be okay. I loved Charlie from the first books, but reading about what he's like, how creative he is, EVERYTHING about him made him perfectly imperfect for me. And now that I'm writing this, those two words: “perfectly imperfect” are how I would describe this relationship, since the two of them fit together in such a beautiful yet chaotic way that everything just made sense.

I loved the dynamics with the other characters, seeing Andrew being more than a friend to Eden, seeing how he was always there for Charlie, seeing all the King brothers, it was all beautiful and I know I'm in fan mode here, but that's all I can say.

Without a doubt, this is a book full of many feelings that felt REAL, and that ending was just perfect for these two.

📌 I received an e-arc, and this is my honest opinion/review of it.

This is book 3 in the King of heart series, which centres around the 4 King brothers.

This is Charlie and Eden’s story.
Charlie is the 2nd oldest brother and also the younger twin of Andrew.
He is artistic, creative, loud , fiercely loyal to his friends and family. And I absolutely love him.

On the flip side there’s Eden. He is the epitome of grumpy. He’s a broken boy who has dealt with some pretty big issues in his short life.

Charlie by his own account is a man whore who does not catch feelings and most certainly doesn’t do relationships. Eden on the other hand doesn’t want anyone to love him and is scared to love for fear of losing everything .

So it’s quite inconvenient when Charlie goes and catches feelings for him.
I loved Charlie’s zest for life and absolutely loved how hard and fast he fell for Eden.

Also absolutely loved the close relationship he has with his twin Andrew. They are the ying and yang of the King family.
While Eden is the perfect amount of sass, and snarky that I really love in a grumpy MMC.

How they navigate their way through firstly their lust and finally their deepening feelings is a delight to read.

I’m slightly obsessed with neurodivergent characters and I feel that Lucky Hart is one of the best proponents of this trope. The book was fresh, fast never dull with the perfectly proportioned amount of humour and spicy.

I was SO excited to receive this ARC and devoured it in one sitting.

The only reason I did not give it 5 stars was a purely selfish one. I wanted a little more about Andrew at the end. I am frothing for his book and can not wait for it…!!

So once again Lucky Hart has hit a home run again in my eyes.

Shoot, These King Brothers are everything. This was so good. Very different from the previous two books.

Closed off, carefree, messy, chaos incarnate, and beautifully broken. Eden and Charlie got through it to get to their hea.

These two are painfully beautiful. The emotions this story goes through from both Eden and Charlie, what a whirlwind. Protect Eden at all costs. Protect Charlie at all costs.

This is one of those books that you hurt for the characters. The fast spice but slow burn element is real in this. It's raw and gritty at times.

Incredibly beautiful writing, you love both of these men but also the incredible side characters. The love and emotions on the page is inspiring. You do not come across books like this, writing like this or characters like this often in our reading world.

“I want a messy life, baby. That’s where the most beautiful moments happen. I don’t want things to be perfect or easy. I want a messy, colorful life. I want you.”

The spice and intimacy between these two was incredible. They played off each other so well, they were such a match even though there was resistance emotionally, they just fit so well.

Their grumpy sunshine, opposites attract dynamic worked so well for their story.

The found family is life changing in this book. So good.

“You’re exactly the kind of forever I want, Eden. Messy, beautiful, real. You’re exactly what I want and what I need.” Eden huffs, closing his eyes before resting his forehead on Charlie’s shoulder. “I hate how much I love you.”“I know, baby.” Charlie rubs his hands up and down Eden’s back. “I do though.” His voice drops, barely above a whisper. “Love you.”“I love you, too.”

I honestly can’t wait for the next book to read Andrew's story.

So thankful for this arc

Charlie King doesn’t do more than one-night stands—never has, never seen the point. Most people don’t get that he and his twin are a package deal. But then he meets the most beautiful person he’s ever seen, and suddenly his rules don’t seem to matter. This mysterious man dodges him at every turn but somehow has no problem talking to his twin. How can Charlie finally find someone who feels perfect, only for that person to want nothing to do with him? Still, once Charlie sets his mind on something—or someone—he doesn’t back down. And this time, it’s Eden Montgomery.

Eden doesn’t get attached. People always let him down. So he can’t figure out why Charlie King won’t take the hint. The more persistent Charlie gets, the more Eden finds himself drawn in against his better judgment. He’s never had someone who genuinely enjoys being around him. That’s why he has rules—no kissing, and definitely no falling in love. But the closer he gets to Charlie, the harder those rules are to follow. Can he really walk away without getting hurt, or is he setting himself up for heartbreak he's most afraid of.

I adored this book so much. Charlie is the ultimate golden retriever—loyal, warm, and unapologetically himself. He knows who he is and what he wants, and I loved how respectful he was of Eden’s boundaries. That alone spoke volumes about his character. And Eden? I saw pieces of myself in him, and it absolutely tore me apart. The loneliness, the feeling that you can only rely on yourself, never asking for help because you don’t want to be a burden—even with people who love you. I felt that in my soul. And when he finally gave in to Charlie? My heart sang. Watching him choose happiness (even when it scared him) over the loneliness he’d grown used to—it was amazing to see.

If you love age gaps, golden retriever/black cat energy, hurt/comfort, and found family, this one’s a must-read.

I absolutely devoured this book! The King men are just my favourites! Charlie and Eden’s story has had me laughing at their bickering, smiling, angry and crying. Poor baby Eden has never been shown the true meaning of loving someone. No one has stuck around except his best friend and her little girl who Eden has helped raise. Letting someone in- especially someone as annoyingly ridiculous as Charlie King- is seriously difficult for Eden. But Charlie King knows- he knows he will follow Eden every time he runs until he doesn’t feel he needs to run anymore.
These two have seriously good banter- the same with Andrew and Charlie! This book has had me smiling throughout- I just loved Eden and Charlie’s story!!!!
I can’t wait for Andrew’s story though- he is such a complex and interesting character!
Overall another fantastic book in the series- 5⭐️s.

This book felt so different from the first two in the series — in the best and most emotional way possible. It was definitely hotter, but also, at least for me, so much sadder. My heart broke for Eden over and over again. The way he constantly believed he didn’t belong, that no one would ever want him… it hurt so much to read. 🥺

I’ll be honest, because of that, I wasn’t too happy with Charlie at times. Don’t get me wrong, I love him — but it felt like he kept his eyes closed to what was really going on with Eden, and that made things even more heartbreaking.

This story definitely went deeper than books 1 and 2. It touched on some really important themes, especially about what happens to kids who grow up in the system and how those experiences follow them into adulthood. I think the author handled it beautifully — raw, emotional, and very real.

I'm ace and i have a problem with how is describe asexuality in this book.
I'm sorry for the following essey and english it's not my first language.
I usually don't give opinion on the matter, because it's different for everyone how someone live their sexuality BUT in this book seems that being ace is synonymous of being sex repulsed or don't like having sex, when it's not like that, a person could be ace and being sex repulsed or being ace and being sex favorable.
In the book Andrew said that he had sex and he doesn't like it, but other characters were like "it's ace so he doesn't like to have sex" instead of being "Andrew doesn't like sex", and this annoyed me a lot.
It's not something major, but when a lot of aspec people has still some trouble of accepting their sexuality, describing being ace as being someone who simpling don't like sex it's not true.

So i have still a little hope that Andrew book will have a decent ace rep.

Tear my heart out and stomp on it then put it back together with friendship bracelets and mole.

I very much appreciated that author Lucky Hart tells readers in the author's note that we won't be getting all of the dark and painful details of Eden's past, because she did not "want to capitalize on the very real trauma queer men experience in a way that does not add to the narrative." We can extrapolate and oh, my poor sweet baby Eden. He has been through it and is still barely hanging on, and then BOOM! Charlie King comes into this life and his heart like the Kool-aid man.

Charlie King is older, and maybe wiser, but also absolutely incapable of taking care of himself (which did get a bit old). He is a goner for don't-call-me-pretty Eden the second he sees him and just wants to get under Eden's skirt (love a man who wears skirts!)

I loved that both MCs have their ride or die, love-me-love-them people. For Charlie it's his twin Andrew and Eden it's his life-saver bestie Addy and her precocious daughter Ella. Combined with allll the King brothers and a smattering of friends, there were a lot of side characters in this story but I enjoyed them all.

While I do maintain that no romance needs to be over ~350 pages and I skimmed a number of the slice of life sections (please do not ever take me on a fictional grocery store shop!), I did enjoy this romance and would read the rest of the series!

Thank you to the author for an eARC, all opinions are my own.

“This isn’t a fairytale or a happily ever after. It’s messy and real, and it’s perfect because it’s not perfect.”

Break the Rule was another fantastic book in the Kings of Heart series. I’ve loved getting to know the King brothers and Charlie is no different. His relationship with Eden is messy and full of flaws, but together they make it work. And although there were a lot of difficult topics in this book, the story was full of love and acceptance and understanding.

I love the found family vibes we get across all the books in this series. I also love how Charlie didn't give up when it came to Eden. This book was def more fast paced in spiceeee but we also got those special moments between them. I love any book that has "fxcks you" as a love language 😂😭

There is just something about these King brothers! We are back with the Kings and I loved. Every. Single. Moment! I loved getting to see everyone and also getting to see Charlie and Eden get their HEA.
Charlie is such a loveable, goofy golden retriever who can be a menace when he's in the mood. He's kind and chaotic and also the most perfect partner for Eden. And Eden! Oh, Eden! I just wanted to bundle him up and protect him. It's a journey for him to trust and believe that he is worthy and not everyone will leave. Charlie is the perfect person to show him his worth. I loved their journey, their banter and their dynamic.
This book is so beautifully written, and while it had me in my feels, I was also giddy while reading it and rooting for Charlie and Eden from the get go. Absolutely adored this beautiful story and I'm excited for what's next.

I was lucly enough to receive an ARC from Lucky Hart, and these were my honest thoughts.

Break the Rule by Lucky Hart is an absolute joy from start to finish — the kind of book that wraps you up in its world and doesn’t let go until long after you’ve turned the last page.

This MM contemporary romance balances heart, humor, and heat in a way that feels deeply human. Charlie and Eden are beautifully imperfect, complex, and real — the kind of characters you wish you could reach through the page and hug. Their story hit me right in the chest in the best possible way.

Reading anything by Lucky Hart feels like a comforting, warm hug, and Break the Rule is no exception. I devoured it in under 48 hours (it only took that long because I had to work - lame) and loved every minute. I already want to reread it — and I can’t wait for Andrew’s book to join the series. If you’re looking for a character-driven romance full of emotion, queer joy, and tender chaos, Break the Rule will absolutely steal your heart.

man, somehow i didn’t warm up to eden or the dynamic between him and charlie. and i hated how charlie didn’t get to be vulnerable in eden’s presence. also, charlie needed to take more accountability for his actions with andrew. but i’m sooo excited for andrew’s book.
