I think that the author of this book has, despite a few spelling mistakes and an awful sense of structure, created a very worthy volume. He is attempting to make the world a better place in the best way he can. If I wasn't so blooming perfect already I would have benefited enormously from his efforts. All the same - well done, Nick.
We are created with everything we need to thrive personally and professionally. The universe is equipped to provide us with resources etc. to assist us with achieving our purpose and living a fulfilled life.
I won a copy of this book during a Goodreads giveaway. I am under no obligation to leave a review or rating and do so voluntarily. I am paying it forward by passing this book along to a business organization that offers business skills, hope, and dreams to be used in their ministry.
In his debut book Switch On, Nick Seneca Jankel explores how to turn on and tune into what he believes is the innate human way of creativity. He lays out his thesis by stating that as human beings we are set apart from all other animals by means not of our rational mind, but of our “creative spirit.” Jankel is not speaking strictly of artistic creativity, but rather creativity in the more broad sense of using our minds to develop ideas, things and solutions.
The book is broken out into ten sessions that lead the reader through Jankel’s “Switch On experience” or “Breakthrough Curve.” These sessions are Problems, Patterns, Pain, Presence, Peace, Purpose, Possibility, Power, Play, and Proactivity. In each session Jankel gives a rundown on the science behind his argument, followed by a series of case studies to illustrate the proof of his scientific assertions. The session, or chapter, is concluded with a host of exercises and questions to challenge the reader at that particular stage of the process. These exercises revolve around meditative techniques and self-inquiry.
Jankel draws equally from eastern traditions and western science to make his claims, often pointing out how each informs the other. Perhaps the strongest emphasis is put on what Jankel dubs the “body.mind” or the interconnectivity between the body and the mind functioning as a single unit. Both the body and the mind inform one another, and Jankel is adamant that one does not hold precedence over the other.
The book is told a in a very laid back, joking tone that can sometimes detract from the serious nature of the book; however, Jankel seems to be making a point that life can’t always be taken so seriously if we really want to turn on creativity. With ten sessions and 288 pages to get through, there are definitely times when Jankel’s advice can overload the reader: it might be best to take it one session at time and read the book in a leisurely way.
Switch On: Unleash Your Creativity and Thrive with the New Science & Spirit of Breakthrough is slated for release from Watkins Publishing in March 24, 2015.
I think I had too high of hopes for this book. I think I won it via GoodReads, but it's taken me so long to finish it, I don't remember anymore. Maybe I need to rewire my brain? Anyway, it's definitely worth a two-star rating, but I'm giving it three today.
