Penny For Your Thoughts

Rate this book
Diem never thought he would have a steady boyfriend and enough cases to keep his business in the green. He never thought his nana would live to be ninety-three. Life is, dare he say, good? He could do to drink less, and he still needs to quit smoking, but he’s getting there. He’s happy. In love. If he could manage his stress, life might even turn out to be… great?

But then Tallus arranges dinner with his parents, where Diem faces questions about commitment and weddings and a weekend bonding trip with a stepfather he doesn’t know.

And a resident of Nana’s nursing home ends up involved in a twisted version of a grandparent scheme, so Diem agrees to investigate. The police clearly aren’t doing their job.

It’s all downhill from there.

The case somehow leads to Diem figuratively adopting the most obnoxious teenager imaginable. A boy whose troubled life reflects Diem’s past. A boy who is deeply entwined in a con far more complex than he realizes.

One misstep tips their hand. The hunter becomes the hunted. Diem and Tallus—and their unfortunate sidekick—are in a race against the clock, desperate to nail the person responsible before he skips the country… or seeks revenge. So much for reducing stress.

I live in the small town of Petrolia, Ontario, Canada and I am a mother to a wonderful teenage boy (didn't think those words could be typed together...surprise) and wife to a truly supportive and understanding husband, who thankfully doesn't think I'm crazy.

I have always had two profound dreams in life. To fall back hundreds of years in time and live in a simpler world, not bogged down by technology and to write novels. Since only one of these was a possibility I decided to make the other come alive on paper.
I write mm romance novels that take place in fantastical medieval type settings and love to use the challenges of the times to give my stories and characters life.

This is a perfect final book in the series. I really liked the case they were working on. I thought it was fun, but it still stressed me out whenever Diem and/or Tallus went to deal with the situation alone. I don’t know how many times I shouted at them: “Just call the police!” 😅

I absolutely loved the relationship between Diem and Tallus in this one. It was beautiful to see them in such a good place. I wasn't really Diem's fan from the start, but his character development throughout the series is amazing. I also loved Tallus more. He is so funny in this one.

A few more things I loved. Best experienced without knowing in advance, so don't click if you haven't read the book. 😉

Looking forward to bonus short stories both for this and Valor & Doyle series. And maybe Memphis' book?

~3.5~

The romance was the best part. I loved seeing Diem truly open up to Tallus. Their lovemaking was so sensual and heartfelt. All the words of endearment, the sweet kisses, the care Diem put into tracing Tallus's body (with his tongue, no less) ... beautiful.

In my review for book 4, I wrote, "I don't have a lot of faith in Diem and Tallus as a couple. They fight constantly, and their relationship is the definition of dysfunctional." I don't feel that way anymore.

The MCs have grown not just within their relationship but within themselves. Diem is being proactive about battling his alcohol addiction. Tallus is less selfish, more giving (even if he steals his boyfriend's desserts lol). They are better people than they were in the first book.

The mystery, on the other hand, was a bit of a throwaway: slow and underwhelming. Most of the cases in the Valor & Doyle series were fascinating; not so much in Shadowy Solutions.

My biggest complaint though is Darcy. I get that Diem saw himself in the kid and wanted to save him. It was nice to see Diem acting vulnerable with someone other than Tallus. He was all big brotherly, and that was adorable.

But Darcy just isn't likable. He's immature for one, which I can forgive. But he's also a homophobic POS, which I can't. The "that's so gay" quips got old fast.

Echo was an amazing addition to the team, but Darcy gets on my nerves.

Also, the thing with Diem's mom at the end was random and unnecessary. How dare she?

And finally, let's talk about the elephant in the room: Diem dotes on his grandma, but she and Boone knew Diem was being brutally abused and didn't do a single thing to stop it. Turning a blind eye makes them 100% complicit in the abuse, yet they're getting the hero treatment. That's NOT how it works, and I'm shocked no therapist has addressed this with Diem.

At risk of sounding like a stone-cold bitch, granny did not deserve a party.

But you know who did? Heath, Tallus's real dad, the one who showed up. That fishing trip ... I'm a puddle of goo and (cleansing) tears.

It pains me to say it, but I struggled through quite a few parts of it 😟 Still: a perfect ending for this series!

It pains me, because I usually love everything Nicky James writes (and Nick J Russo narrates), but….

Let’s start with the case. I guessed very early on the role of one of the culprits, and a grandparent scheme just isn’t something I’m sitting at the edge of my seat for. Maybe because it’s (sadly) so common, and there’s usually fraud, and no gut wrenching murder mystery? Am I jaded for not being overly interested in the resolution?

Then we get a lot of side characters, like the first victim and his son, where we get a bit of background, but not enough to keep us invested, and who don’t even play a role in the second half of the book.

Then there’s Darcy. Ok, this one I actually liked. Loved that it’s a character whom we briefly met in a previous book.

Tallus… uh. So many tstl moments. At some point, you’d think he’d figure out that it’s not a good idea to go all in when he’s alone, especially while wearing slippery shoes.

As for Diem himself- he’s one of the most difficult characters I’ve ever read about, with his anger issues, alcohol problems, and his inability to communicate- but at the end, he melted my heart, and I might have shed a tear or two.

And these tears are why I’m round my 3.5 stars up - books that make me feel so intensely are too good for 3 stars.

More fabulous PI adventures with Tallus & Diem

I absolutely adore these two.

I loved Aslan and Quaid, but there's something about the vulnerability of Diem that makes this series even more special.

Here things go awry when they're called in to deal with a scam involving a resident at the home where Diem's Nana lives.

Ending up essentially kidnapping a stray teenager who very much reminds Diem of his own younger self wasn't on the cards but happens nonetheless! I'm

It's such a joy to see how far Diem has come, while he's still breaking my heart at how he struggles with his addictions and accepting help to cope with them.

With guest appearances from Ruiz and Aslan in this instalment, it has everything I've come to expect.

Great investigation, lots of action, a wonderful relationship that continues to grow and develop and some genuine emotions that help Diem see he's worth loving.

I just wish they weren't as low steam and fade to black-y as they have been the last couple of books.

I was thinking about this book some more and I’ve decided to lower my rating to 3 stars. This is the last full length book in the series but I didn’t feel like much was totally resolved. Also for everything they’ve gone through everything was resolved way too fast at then end.

Diem is struggling still very bad with addiction and we get a fast resolution of him going to AA and quitting smoking with Darcy. We know it isn’t just smooth sailing for Diem but it seemed like it’s all tied up in a pretty bow. I think Diem still has so much to work through.

I do think a lot of the book focused on things other than the relationship and I think these two deserve better than that. I didn’t mind Darcy but after thinking about it he was thrown in the mix and then took up most of the story. I didn’t like that.

If we were getting another book I don’t think these things would bother me so much. I am disappointed though.
________________________________________________

This was tough for me, I couldn’t ever get into it and that has not happened with this series before. I thought the case was weak and there was something missing that I just couldn’t put my finger on.

I still love Diem and Tallus and Diem has come so far!

A- / 4.5 stars rounded up.

This fifth – and final - book in Nicky James’ Shadowy Solutions series finds Diem and Tallus investigating a crime that strikes a bit close to home when they’re asked to look into a scammer who is stealing money from the elderly and infirm. As always, the author does a great job of balancing the suspense plot with the ongoing character and relationship development as Diem continues to struggle with his addictions (booze and nicotine) even though he and Tallus are solid and his life is going way better than he’d ever thought it could.

When Penny For Your Thoughts begins, Tallus is organising a birthday party for Diem’s beloved Nana, who will be turning ninety-three this year and who is, sadly, losing more of her memories every day. She almost never recognises Diem now, seeing only his resemblance to her late husband, but seemingly happy living in her past for however long she has left. On one of their visits to the home where she now lives, Tallus meets another of the inhabitants, a gentleman named Elwood Scarrow – sharp as a tack and feisty with it - who starts teling him about how he’s swimming in the worldwide ocean and asked Google to find him a girlfriend – and how he now has three of them. Vaguely amused, Tallus doesn’t ask any of the thousand questions he has bubbling up, sees Diem is ready to leave and says his goodbyes.

A day or so later, it turns out that Elwood’s new internet obsession is not so benign when Elwood’s son, Ben, contacts Diem and explains that his father has been scammed out of over thirty thousand dollars. He’s reported it to the police, but they’ve more or less told him there’s nothing they can do and have shelved the case. But Ben wants to find out who is behind it, even if he never recovers the money.

Relieved to have something to investigate that isn’t a cheating spouse for once, Diem takes the case, discovering that Ellwood’s laptop was given to him by his grandson, Kael, who also set up his banking apps and showed him how to use them. But there’s a hitch. Kael is studying abroad and hasn’t been home in over a year, so whoever is showing up on the home’s security footage - while he certainly looks enough like Kael to be convincing - can’t actually be Elwood’s grandson.

As Diem and Tallus start digging deeper, they learn that this is just one of many similar scams being perpetrated on elderly, vulnerable people by someone whose operation is clearly pretty widespread. And there’s another surprise is in store, becausewhen Diem manages to track down the young man who had posed as Kael, he realises he knows him; over a year earlier, when he’d been investigating a fake psychic (in Power of the Mind ) he’d met and felt an immediate kinship with a surly, angry teenager named Darcy, recognising himself at that age, boiling with rage with nowhere for it to go and on the cusp of disaster. Impulsively, Diem had offered the boy his card and told him to get in touch if he ever wanted to learn how to punch a bag – but he never heard from him again. Now here he is, nineteen years old, living in a shitty apartment one step away from being a crack-den, with little money, a shitty job that barely pays the rent and no prospect of anything better; he’s one of those kids who falls through the cracks and turns to desperate measures in the attempt to just keep existing, and Diem’s protective instincts are fully engaged. He doesn’t know how yet, but he wants to help, and even though Darcy is a smart-mouthed little shit who keeps lying to him, Diem recognises the constant pushback as the sign of someone who doesn’t want to be pitied or thought weak or useless… the same feelings he’s been dealing with himself for most of his life.

The suspense plot is topical, well thought-out and skilfully executed with enough red-herrings, dead-ends and twists to keep things interesting, although it’s perhaps not quite as complex as some of the others I’ve read by this author. What really hooked me was the way Diem is so slowly coming to accept himself and working so hard to be better. He’s spent his life battling his demons alone (mostly) and here, he finally and seriously acknowledges the truth of his addictions and reaches out for help – and in a wonderful circle back to where it all began, it’s Aslan Doyle, whom we first met as a struggling alcoholic and watched make hard choices to fight his own addiction, who is there for Diem and acts as his sponsor.

Tallus is still very much Tallus – snarky, fashion-conscious, intuitive and sometimes a bit too impulsive for his own good – but he feels more mature now, more settled and confident in what he and Diem are to each other. He’s so tuned-in to Diem and has become so much better at knowing when to push and when to leave things alone, and I love that they’re all about the little things, the small gestures and things they do to take care of each other that never lets the other forget that they’re truly seen. They’ve come such a long way from where they started, and the relationship development has been stellar – from reluctant and, in Diem’s case, slightly antagonistic fuck-buddies to two people who simply get each other on every level and who are there for each other in whatever way is needed.

There isn’t a huge supporting cast here. Darcy is the main secondary character, but there are cameos from Aslan and from Costa Ruiz, who is about to become a dad for the third time, and we’re properly introduced to Tallus’ step-father, Heath, who is more of a father to Tallus than his bio-dad ever was. He’s a kind, decent man who intuits that Diem might need a friend he can be quiet with, one who won’t bother him with endless chatter – and reaches out to offer him exactly that. Watching Diem work to overcome his challenges, finding love, arriving at a place where he has the self-confidence to be able to act as mentor to a ‘lost boy’, and finding friends and family who accept him for who he is has been wonderful to read.

Penny For Your Thoughts is the final full-length novel in the Shadowy Solutions series. The author says that we will see Diem and Tallus again in a novella to round things off, but as things stand, Nicky James has taken her guys on one hell of a journey and leaves them in a really good place – winning against the bad guys and happily in love. And what could be better than that?

3.5 stars. Not the best one in the series. I really loved the romance parts in this (Diem is finally able to show and tell Tallus how much he loves him), but the mystery was a bit underwhelming and dragged out and a bit too vague on the details for me. I also could have done without the halfbaked reunion between Diem and his mother. It didn't solve or add anything.
But what really made me like this book less than the others in the series was Darcy. Man, that guy was annoying. He was 19, but acted like he just got into puberty. The 'Oh, that's so gay' remarks got old fast, he was constantly whining and acting like a brat. I would understand him being wary of Diem and Tallus, being angry at the world, but this sulky behavior didn't fit in my opinion. I'm glad Diem connected to someone other than Tallus and it's nice he could be a role model, but he could have been one for a less irritating guy.
I still liked the book, because of all the joyful small moments between Diem and Tallus, the relationship between Diem and Heath (Tallus's stepfather), and because it was so good to see how far Diem has come since book 1, but the rest was a bit of a letdown.

Perfection

This was utter perfection. These two have come so far. I just love Tallus and Diem. Oh my heart.
Just so good .. and Darcy... yes this was everything.
Oh how I loved this world.

Phenomenal ending to this series
I could absolutely keep reading about them though

Beautiful sweet perfect thrilling

Loved every word

"For someone who claimed he didn’t know what he was doing half the time, Diem was more capable of showing love than any man I knew. It was a quiet love. A tender love. One we kept to ourselves. One we shared on a molecular level. Others may not see it, but it wasn’t theirs to see."

Nicky James does it again! Another amazing mystery with Diem and Tallus as well as them growing into more than they ever thought possible! I LOVED every minute of this book. The story was so captivating and the narration was fantastic! Nick J Russo brings everything to the next level, so freaking good! I can't recommend this book/series enough!

5 Glowing Stars!!

GAH… So Good! I Loved Book! It was full of suspense, surprises, some angst and at the end happy. I was in happy tears the last two chapters and I enjoyed the little chapter we get afterwards in email, cute and funny. Of course I loved Tallus and Diem in which Diem still surprises me and still has his struggles but he faces them, so proud of him. I need more of their story because it keeps getting better and better.

So Great!

What a finale to an awesome series! I am so sad that Tallus and Diem's journey has come to an end but she left them in such a wonderful place, it made my heart so happy. I just adore multiple books with the same characters when there is time to watch them grow and change and fall deeper in love. Tallus just gets Diem to his very core and watching Diem, who couldn't even bring himself to touch Tallus affectionately for months, just lie with him for cuddles, was just fabulous! Darcy was a lovely addition to the story and the case was the perfect amount of sleuthing to keep me engaged but not detract from the core love story. And we even got to see Aslan and Costa again! Loved it!

Penny For Your Thoughts by Nicky James was sooo good. I love Tallus and Diem and this just made me love them even more. Diem’s growth really got me. He’s still struggling but you can see him trying and opening himself up more.

The case kept me hooked the whole time and there were so many sweet moments between them. That ending had me emotional.

And Tallus being dramatic and perfectly dressed as always… obsessed. I need more of them.

I loved it! I listened to a bit of it at work and I had to keep myself from laughing in certain parts. Darcy, omg, that kid (not a kid) was such a fun addition to the formidable duo shenanigans. Tallus and Diem are stronger than ever and no matter how many struggles they face both personally and together, they know they have each other. And if they need an external help sometimes? Well, who doesn't? It was great seeing a couple old acquaintances again. I missed them all and now that this series is over, too, I'll miss them too. Give me all the short stories! i need them!!

How come this series never misses? God, this ess exceptionally good. Maybe the case wasn't as engaging as in the previous books, but everything else was absolutely perfect. I adore Diem and Tallus together, they never fail to make me laugh or cry. And the addition of Darcy... Ugh, my heart can't take it. The dynamics between Diem and Darcy remind me quite a bit of Hazard and Colt from Gregory Ashe's "Hazard and Somerset: Arrows in the Hand" series!! I'm so in love with this book and this series 🩷🩷

I say this all the time, but Diem's growth touches me.
he's learning to accept himself, allowing his circle to grow- which can only be a good thing.

another case starring the fabulously, inappropriately dressed PI, Tallus, was epic.

5/5⭐

This is probably my new favourite in the series along with the 3rd book. There were so many things that hooked me in. I also just found out that this might possibly be the last one in the series, but I have my fingers crossed that's not the case, because we just got to the point where it can just get better and better. And I NEED more.

There are probably going to be some spoilers, because there are things I want to reference and talk about.

First of all, the mystery/case they were working really hooked me in and it didn't let me go until the end. I had a fun time trying to guess who the 'bad guys' are and I actually managed to guess one of them very early on, so that made me happy.

The character development in this one was phenomenal, especially with Diem. He finally asked for help and is trying to actively battle his addiction. I admired him a lot for how brave he was to take the necessary steps to get all the support on his journey to recovery. I loved this part a lot, because we see Aslan go full circle moment as well. In his series we saw him as a struggling alcoholic who eventually found balance and support from many people and especially his sponsor. Now he's in a position to offer help to someone else and seeing him be a sponsor to Diem almost made me cry. This relationship definitely fits them and I think Diem will find a lot of support from him. Maybe they even become friends. Every mention of Aslan and Quiad makes me kick my feet because they are my absolute favourite and I would kill for a short story about how their lives are going. It was also nice to see Costa again and finally his newborn baby boy he wanted so much. He even got the name he wished for. *wipes tear away*

I also felt like Tallus was more mature in this, while still keeping his unique personality and I loved it. His spending still triggers me sometimes, but whatever, I'm just going to look past it. His relationship with his family is amazing though. Heath is such a great father figure, to both Tallus and Diem. The whole scene with them fishing was heartwarming and I hope it's a start for Diem to have a parent figure in his life who's going to be there for him.

Tallus's and Diem's relationship also came a long way and I'm really proud of them how they matured and opened up since book one. They show how much they love each other through small gestures every day and I think that's my favourite part about their relationship.

I didn't expect Darcy's appearance, but I think it's an important relationship for both Diem and Darcy. Diem can offer help to someone who reminds him of himself at that age and Darcy will have kind of like a big brother figure in his life. He made this book more interesting and fun. I would definitely like to see more of him and their interactions.

I'm really hoping we're going to get more from this series, because I'm not ready to let go of these characters.

I also need more recommendations for stories like this, because I feel like I either read everything that interested me already or I can't find anything that is this good.

I don't know how Nicky James does it, but each time, James nails it.

Penny For Your Thoughts, the latest of Tallus and Diem's adventures, brought our boys back together. In A Breath of Life, there were some Avengers: End Game vibes with Diem and Tallus being separate even though they're really supposed to be together as this epic yet sassy and grumpy team.

In PFYT, the boys of Shadowy Solutions come together to investigate a scam case that targeted one of the residents of Nana's home. There was a reveal toward the later half of the book that I felt like I called earlier on, but that didn't diminish my enjoyment of unraveling the case. The puzzle pieces were put together in a creative way, so I could still find myself looking closer and saying, "OH, SO THAT'S HOW IT WORKED."

Along the way, they unexpectedly add a third musketeer to their trio, and it's actually perfect. For anyone who's worried, this isn't some twist with a third romantic partner. Totally not that direction at all.

As far as their relationship goes, Tallus and Diem are in a better place than they've ever been, which is so nice to see. I want our cuddle bear to claim his peace, and Tallus deserves the future he sees with Diem because I think he's grown up too.

Both of them show an often sassy, mostly patient, and gentle when needed understanding of each other that helps their pieces slot together in such a balanced way that I can't help but read the moments between them and just think "This all makes so much sense." James also gives us some beautiful lines that I think people won't be able to stop themselves from highlighting.

"If I knew one thing for certain, love could not be controlled or commanded or contained. It was something you experienced. It became a part of who you were. It stole the breath from your lungs and made you weak and vulnerable. It also made you exquisitely happy."

I mean, c'mon!

Overall, I'm really happy with this one. As I've come to expect, we get cameos from some favorites, and Diem also makes some big decisions that show us just how far he's come. Although I'd love to jump and squeal all about those, I'm going to leave it a mystery so everyone can firsthand experience the same excitement, amusement, and warm fuzzies that I did.

This is one of my favorites of the series. And if it’s the finale, I’m absolutely satisfied with how everyone is left at the end.

Rating: 4.75🌈

Penny For Your Thoughts is the fifth book in Nicky James fantastic series , Shadowy Solutions. It’s a series that quickly became a hit with me, surpassing the original series it’s connected with, that of Valor and Doyle. I feel parts of Valor and Doyle became repetitive, although Aslan is a huge hit with me.

But the complexity of the dynamic between Tallus Domingo and deeply damaged PI Diem Krause, each with a legacy of parental violence, family domestic abuse, and childhood trauma. But one who carries the deepest visible scars as well as the emotional traumatic memories. Ongoing pain and PTSD. That’s Diem, who has tremendous anger issues and anxieties as well as substance abuse problems.

Over the course of 5 novels, James has built up, albeit slowly and realistically, a hard won relationship between these two very different men. It’s been compelling to watch and read about as Diem fights with his demons, and both have to devise ways to make their lives work for themselves.

Even here, Diem has to make the decisions about his use of alcohol and cigarettes, even as his father and family life has the greatest impact on his life.

I’m not sure if James is finishing the series with the story or not. I would be happy if this was the finale.

It’s got a terrific storyline. All the crossover characters are here from Valor and Doyle in meaningful scenes. Aslan, Fox, Quaid, Costa and Kitty Lavender.

Then there’s Darcy Gingrick, Echo, and Baby the snake, that actually gives both Tallus and Diem as touching family, of sorts. Especially, Darcy, what an incredible element he turns out to be.

This is one of my favorites of the series. And if it’s the finale, I’m absolutely satisfied with how everyone is left at the end.

There’s an extra bonus story, The Baby Visit, linked at the end of the book. Don’t miss out on this one. Sweet bonus and intimate window into a favorite side character.

Highly recommended.

🎧 Audiobook Review 🎧
Overall: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Performance: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️️
Story: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This is the fifth book in the Shadowy Solutions series, and I recommend reading the books in order.
The writing style is wonderful. The story is told alternately from the perspectives of Diem and Tallus, which allowed me to really empathize with both protagonists.
The author has done it again! She’s written a story that kept me hooked from start to finish! It captivates with a great balance of romance and suspense.
Diem and his grandmother have a special bond, and Diem’s new case is set in his grandmother’s nursing home. What sounds relatively harmless at first escalates into a turbulent hunt for the culprit. It’s always a delight to witness how fearless Diem and Tallus are in their search for the culprit—or rather, the man pulling the strings behind the scenes.
Alongside the investigation, the focus is on Diem’s development. Anyone familiar with Diem from the first book will notice the astonishing and touching character growth he has undergone. I loved the honest communication between Tallus and Diem and how Diem’s walls keep coming down more and more in Tallus’s presence. Equally fascinating is the deep love they both feel, which you can sense as you read.
There’s an interesting supporting character who fits perfectly with Diem and Tallus and who provided me with some humorous moments.
There’s an interesting supporting character who fits perfectly with Diem and Tallus and provided some humorous moments for me. The love story is heartwarming—it’s wonderfully done—and then the ending—so romantic, sweet, and well-deserved!
But the investigation is also super interesting and entertaining, and I enjoyed every second with Diem and Tallus. And I was so happy to see Arslan again.

Nick J. Russo takes an already excellent book to the next level. Wow, that was brilliant! He gives Diem and Tallus distinctive voices and incredible emotional depth, making them feel like authentic characters. I can picture grumpy Diem right in front of me, and Tallus too, speaking about Diem with so much warmth in his voice. I was captivated by the intensity and the storytelling from start to finish and finished the audiobook in just two days.
Highly recommended!

It was a quiet love. A tender love. One we kept to ourselves. One we shared on a molecular level. Others may not see it, but it wasn’t theirs to see.

This quote really touched me. Tbh, that whole scene happening at the end of chapter 11, was absolutely beautiful. A scene where love and tenderness supercede sex, every touch is meaningful, turning into an expression of the deepest feelings. Sigh.
Considering where Diem is coming from, THIS is just breath-taking. And Tallus is so connected to him that he understands and gets it ‘on a molecular level’.

I loved seeing Diem and Tallus a solid couple. And while Diem may have little insecurities here and there, he knows at the bottom of his heart that Tallus is his. And from this stable emotional base he’s able to start tackling his addictions. I loved that Aslan is the one to help him on the way!

Adding Darcy (I was wondering about the choice of name here??), a young man in dire need of help, is a really good ploy to bring Diem’s protectiveness and goodness out more into the open. To make him more determined to be a man Darcy can look up to. It works really well!

The mystery plot is calmer and quieter than in the previous instalment (not a bad thing in my books) with some developments a little predictable, but it still kept me invested enough to enjoy it. This is mainly Diem’s book, and I totally loved that.

And there is a good dose of humour, too. Tallus and some of his antics made me chuckle on various occasions. Even if him going off by himself into a dangerous situation AGAIN! made me tear my hair out!

On a totally minor point ... I kind of thought that the author might have made more of those ‘pennies’ (for thoughts) that Tallus is giving Diem, but it didn’t come to anything much.

All in all, I really enjoyed this series.
I feel that Diem’s character growth is one of the best I’ve read.

Another adventure (an audio review)

I adore Nicky James romantic suspense stories, and this one was no exception. I was jumping up and down in my seat when I heard Diem and Tallus were getting another story. They’re slowly settling into life together. Living in (relative) harmony. Working cases together. Loving Diem’s therapy dog, Echo. Planning Nana’s birthday.

This new case seems hopeless. A gentleman in Nana’s nursing home has been taken in by the grandparent scam. Man, it’s disgusting that criminals are willing to go to such lengths to take people in and many victims are too embarrassed to report their crimes to the police. And the police are completely overwhelmed and solving these crimes can be tough. So when Diem and Tallus are asked to investigate, they’re willing to try.

Naturally, things are not as they seem. From the beginning, they’re pulled in. I have to say I loved how things unfolded. I certainly got sucked into Darcy’s story and am hoping for more with him. And, of course, Diem and Tallus get into plenty of sticky situations and yet another pair of come f- me glasses are sacrificed.

I’m really sad this will be the last full book and, of course, I’m hoping Nicky changes her mind. But even if I only get snippets, that’ll be okay. I’ve really enjoyed the five books and felt honored to be on the ride. Tallus and Diem are solid now, and that’s awesome.

I can’t end the review before I mention Nick J. Russo. Nicky and Nick are an amazing combination. Nick’s performance in these books has been brilliant. Diem’s deep voice must’ve been tough on Nick’s vocal cords, but it was totally worth it – delivering one of his best performances. So, needless to say, I completely recommend this series and this book.

I love Diem and Tallus so much! The love & patience that Tallus has for Diem is unmatched. I seriously would love to be even half as patient as Tallus. They are so secure with each other and it is so empowering to read about a couple that trust one another so implicitly. Even when Tallus went to flirt with Aaron to get the information they needed to take Luke down, Diem never doubted that Tallus would keep him at an arms length. They are so perfect for each other.

I couldn’t be happier that Diem finally came to his realization that he is an addict. I love that he reached out to Aslan & Ruiz for help. It totally fits that Aslan would be his sponsor. Diem has really come a long way in this book, especially being a role model for Darcy.

Meeting Darcy was probably the best thing that could have happened. It really helped Diem put his addiction into perspective faster and it was nice to have Darcy looking up to him. Diem getting him out of that crack house & taking him in was so kind. I’m glad they were able to leave Darcy out of the arrest with Luke & Aaron.

Nana’s 93rd birthday party was a hit and of course Tallus did an amazing job. Diem’s mom showing up was a huge surprise. I’m glad she is ready to leave that asshole of a man she is with. I have a feeling that Diem’s dad is going to come into play in the next book a lot. It will be exciting to see how that gets handled.

I balled like a baby when Diem asked Tallus to marry him. I’m so excited to hear all about how Tallus is going to plan the wedding. I’m sure it’s going to be amazing. It was also super cute that Diem asked Heath for permission to marry Tallus.

I want, no need to highlight the fact that Nicky James is such a formidable writer...
I have yet to read anything from her pen and feel disappointed.

Penny For Your Thoughts was a gripping read, from the ever evolving relationship between Diem and Tallus and the new case that their agency gets involved in, I was truly swept away and did not want to stop reading.

In each new consecutive book the changes in Diem and Tallus are so genuinely heart warming that you can't help but feel invested, like you are watching your family and feel proud. My grumpy bear is so deserving of all the love coming his way.

In this story Diem's huge heart envelopes another broken soul, a young man that is on a self destructive path, one that is very familiar to him. The banter between Tallus and the new guy is funny, especially when they are both fighting for Diem's attention, not forgetting Echo, Diem's guide dog, all wanting a share of his time.

With plenty of vulnerable moments with his nana, getting to meet Tallus's parents and reaching out, asking for help for his addiction makes this story a huge one for Diem. I was so happy I didn't want to put the book down.

Tallus is asked to shoulder more upheaval than usual from Diem, but boy is he rewarded well for it. The final chapters are very emotional and full of joy, did I say that I loved it, yeah I really did.

I'm always excited for more of these great characters.

Can we give a bonus star for an outstanding audio performance by Nick J. Russo? I wish...

The only thing I don't like about Nicky James's stories is that they end! Dammit. And in this case, the book is the end of the series. Although... the author does hint at bonus material, maybe a short story coming in the future so she can wrap up Diem's HEA with a little bow... um, maybe a teenage bow, and maybe a ring bow too. LOL. I LOVE these guys.

This story couldn't have been better. The thrilling adventure shows Diem's soft side, his possessiveness, his anger and jealousy, and his inner child. It also shows him finally becoming powerless enough to ask for help and start his road to recovery from alcoholism. There's also a surprise visit from his mother, a birthday party for Nana, an underhanded financial scam against seniors, a kid who needs help, and highlights of Tallus's humor, perseverance, love for Diem, and his strength of character.

Top this all off with Nick's performance and the original music he created for the audio version intro and finale and this really should be more than 5 stars. This whole series is a definite winner!

Tallus and Diem once again find themselves embroiled in a case that has its fair share of drama and action with a wonderfully intricate and intriguing plot that also hits close to home - the aged care facility where Diem’s beloved Nana lives.
Diem is still a somewhat emotional wreck due to his childhood trauma but expresses himself so much better now. I loved seeing his personal growth and the courage he has to make the hard changes for the better. As he trusts himself and others more his number of friends ever so slowly increases. Tallus was magnificently spectacular when he had his first encounter with Diem’s dad Leroy and stood up to him like the amazing man he is. Of course he was, as usual, superbly dressed for the occasion!
This book had me hooked from start to finish and I couldn’t put it down. There’s plenty of sweet and tender moments between these two wonderful men, enough action/drama to keep them on their toes and an unexpected addition to their little family. Nicky James also threw in some feels but I’m not giving anything away!

Fifth in series (Shadowy Solutions), must be read in order. Established couple. Dual POV. Heed content warnings.

This story brings a new case for intrepid private investigator duo Diem and Tallus that starts at Diem’s grandmother’s nursing home and leads them on a merry chase. Everything about the evolution of Diem is front and center in this book, he has changed so much since he was first introduced and his love for Tallus is a huge part of it and it is swoon.

I enjoyed every second Diem and Tallus were on page together, the honest communication, the care, and the love that is reinforced each time they interact. I really appreciated how hard Diem tries in overcoming his individual battles and how both men are utterly committed to each other no matter what. The investigation part of the story was entertaining and new characters interesting. Honestly, I could read about this couple for years with this type of plot as I love the characters and their chemistry, both personal and professional.

Diem and Tallus go on another fantastic journey together that is filled with many heartwarming moments of intrigue and surprise. Their relationship has grown so much throughout this series, and I love how open and honest they are with one another. Diem has overcome many of his personal struggles, but he still has a long way to go with his demons. Knowing that Tallus is the perfect partner in his unwavering patience and love for Diem makes him a great partner in every aspect.

Overall, this installment has many moments of surprise and intrigue within the case and their personal lives. There are many new developments that have offered many permanent surprises that I was not expecting, and I look forward to seeing those changes come to fruition in the next entry. I always love returning to this couple and cannot wait for their next one.
