Defying Gravity

Rate this book
This moving, thoughtful and often funny debut novel was nominated for three Saskatchewan Book Awards including  Book of the Year .   Miranda is a wry-humoured, thirty-something TV news producer who is about to find herself on one emotionally rocky road trip. Ditched by her fiancé on a mountaintop in the Canadian Rockies, Miranda is soon befriended by Indrin, a hippy-haired short order cook with aspirations to the priesthood. He's looking for a lift to the west coast and Miranda decides he'll be the perfect new travel companion. But, as soon as they hit the road, their plans are rerouted again when a small town priest asks them to help Edmond Rebero, a Rwandan refugee who has been working in Canada as a tree planter since escaping the genocide in his country.
Together, they set in motion a dramatic and moving voyage of emotional and spiritual self-discovery -- a voyage that will change all three of their lives.
Rich and riveting, Defying Gravity explores love, friendship, and the pure power of understanding what it means to be connected to the human family -- even in the face of worlds that are ending.

I really enjoyed this book.

The first pages, are a bit deceptive. I thought it was going to be a predictable romance book.

Oh but no!

This book is well written and the characters very rich. Miranda’s train of thoughts and self discovery permeated me. The friendship with Indrin, the acknowledgement of her own tragic loss mirrored in the loss of Edmond Rebero, the Rwanda refugee is revealing.

This book deserves to be discovered by many. Can’t wait to find out if this Canadian author wrote more books. Go Jennifer Wynne Webber!

Meeting a mysterious young man starts a chain of events that arouse emotions and truths in her personal understanding of her past, present and future. It is a story of discovery.
