Charlaine Harris has been a published writer for over forty years. Her first two books were standalones, followed by a long sabbatical when she was having children. Then she began the Aurora Teagarden book, mysteries featuring a short librarian (eventually adapted for Hallmark movies). The darker Lily Bard books came next, about a house cleaner with a dark past and considerable fighting skills.

Tired of abiding by the mystery rules, Harris wrote a novel about a telepathic barmaid that took at least two years to sell. When the book was published, it turned into a best seller, and DEAD UNTIL DARK and the subsequent Sookie books were adapted in Alan Ball's "True Blood" series. At the same time, Harris began the Harper Connelly books. Harper can find the bones of the dead and see their last minute.

When those two series wound to a close, the next three books were about a mysterious town in Texas, called Midnight.

A change in publisher and editor led to Harris's novels about a female gunslinger in an alternate America, Lizbeth Rose. The Gunnie Rose books concluded with the sixth novel.

She's thinking about what to write next.

So a couple or few years ago there was a bundle deal to get 24 graphic audiobooks for $24 and that was too good for me to pass up.  Especially since it had many of my favorite authors included.  The first two books in the Gunnie Rose series were included and I went on to read the rest of the series at the library.  I meant to read this final book in the series earlier but ended up waiting for the Graphic Audio version.

Eli and Lizbeth are back in San Diego to help and protect Felicia for the Wizard's Ball.  She is 16 but very powerful and highly sought after for her talents.  With A World War brewing, Germany, Japan and Italy will be fighting the rest of the world. They are killing Jews and trying to take control over all the rest of the countries.  The men debate whether America will get involved.

Eli has made a plan with the other men and is also planning to get back into the Czar's good graces and fight for him in the war.  He hasn't told Lizbeth though.  She wants to go back home and stay out of it unless her home turf gets involved.

Felicia is enjoying the parties and dances and dresses. It's going to her head. At least until the Germans and later Japanese attendees try to kill her.  Lizbeth tries to figure out what is going on and tries to keep Felicia safe.

The Last Wizard's Ball has both Eli and Felicia not sharing their thoughts and plans with Lizbeth which I don't like.  She puts her life on the line for them time and again.  The ending is uncertain as to Felicia or Lizbeth's futures with the onset of the war.  I could use another book on the developments during the war for them personally and the overall world developments.

Narration:
I continue to enjoy the Graphic Audio experience for this series.  I'm impressed with the full cast narration and sound effects. Colleen Delany has the biggest role and handles it ably.  I listened comfortably at my newer 1.75x speed.

I got a lot out of this audio book. After reading the hard copy when it came out, this audio rendition showed me some things I had missed (or forgotten). The Last Wizards' Ball is a brave book. And something I have come to realize is that, - fantasy or not, romance or not, - these characters are sorta realistic. By which I mean they are all flawed. I think I liked the FMC less after this reading, though, because of the complaining. But overall, I really liked this book, this presentation and this whole series.
