Nina started writing her own stories in elementary school but quickly grew distracted when she finished school and moved on to non-profit work with recovering drug addicts. There she worked with people from every walk of life from privileged neighborhoods to the shanty towns of urban and rural South Africa.
One day she met a real-life romantic hero. She instantly married her fellow bibliophile and moved to the USA where she enjoyed a career as a sales coaching executive at an Inc 500 company. She lives with her husband on the Florida Gulf Coast.
Nina believes in kindness and the indomitable power of the human spirit. She is fascinated by the amazing, funny people she has met across the world who dared to change their lives. She likes to tell mischievous tales of life-changing decisions and character transformations while drinking excellent coffee and avoiding cookies.
Thanks to the author and Bookfunnel for a copy of this novel and this is my freely given opinion.
The Inconvenient world stories continue in this next stage, continuing the search for the lost Bianchi renaissance art. Reading the preceding two books to this one is needed to understand their ultiate quest; The Courtship Trap and The Hidden Lord.
Angelo Scott, Lorenzo Bianchi, and Nicholas Scott are persuaded by their discoveries to join Lord Gabriel and his new bride, Henri, at Grimsfell to investigate the mysteries revealed to them, and continue their search for Lorenzo's ancestor's works. Angelo has been feeling out of sorts and missing his Italian home. Having travelled to England, he is not able to practice his art of healing and pharmacology, and disconnected, especially in light of his brother's new marriage and the couple's obvious love for each other. So when the missive comes inviting him and his friend to explore Grimsfell in Cornwall, they embark on the adventure, including his uncle, the brooding Nicholas Scott.
There, he notices inconsisties and a sense of being watched, and eventually discovers some of the secrets of Grimsfell. Namely, the mysterious hidden mistress of the manor, Isolde Fairfax. She has been living and hiding in the hidden spaces of Grimsfell since the death of her father. She has been charged with keeping the secrets of her home, but not fully understanding them and her purpose, as her father died unexpectedly. But she has also been living the life of a hidden recluse for years after being shamed and shunned for circumstances far beyond her control. As such, she is a phantom in Grimsfell, silently observing others from her secret spaces, and living in the hidden dark. Until Angelo comes, and being more observant than others, eventually discovers Isolde's secret, and persuades her to step beyond her hidden halls.
But Isolde is fearful and distrustful of Angelo and his regard for her, especially having been so ill-treated in the past. She does not believe that he would truly see her and find her appealing.
A reverse Beauty and the Beast tale with a strong gothic feel in the backdrop of Grimsfell and its secrets. I enjoyed the story of Isolde and Angelo and especially love how the story of the quest is continued. A bit of a Regency romance meets Dan Brown symbology story.
The Phantom Romance, the third installment in the Inconvenient Ventures series, delivers an atmospheric and emotional gothic tale about truly seeing others for who they are. Angelo Scott, a gifted healer, arrives at Grimsfell Hall seeking a priceless Renaissance art collection. The shadowy Tudor mansion, with its haunting melodies and whispering corridors, makes it clear that secrets live in every corner.
Isolde Fairfax, hidden away in her ancestral home, guards both the house’s treasures and the scars of her own painful past. Shunned for her birthmark and wounded by cruelty, she has chosen isolation—until Angelo’s kind heart and perceptive nature begin to draw her out. Their romance unfolds with tenderness, balancing Isolde’s fears against Angelo’s quiet hope and healing touch.
The supporting cast—gruff Nicholas, mercurial Lorenzo, steadfast Mrs. Roskelly, and the newlyweds Henri and Gabriel—add depth and texture without stealing the spotlight from the central pair. And Grimsfell Hall itself feels like a character, its windblown halls and centuries-old secrets shaping the story’s mood.
While I loved the romance and Isolde’s emotional journey, I found the treasure-hunting element less thrilling than in previous books. The series earlier books captivated me with the excitement of the chase, and this installment’s slower pace made the mystery feel less urgent. Still, the story’s gothic atmosphere and heartfelt emotional romance kept my attention.
With gothic undertones, heartfelt emotion, and an engaging blend of mystery and romance, I enjoyed this story. A truly captivating series for fans of atmospheric love stories, hidden treasures, mystery, and brave heroines.

This third book in the Inconvenient Ventures series was an engaging slowburn historical romance with intrigue, adventure, raw emotion, strong passion, and a slowburn romance. The characters were interesting, and the plot was entertaining.
This gripping new installment in the series continues the “hunt” for Matteo Di Bianchi’s hidden works; therefore, I recommend reading the previous books in the series to get a complete picture of the events so far. The well-written plot has a bit of a “Gothic” flair, featuring the “strangers-to-lovers” trope, and is full of heartfelt emotions, secrets, intrigue, spice, and a whole cast of likable characters. I already knew Angelo from the previous books. He is a likable and caring hero who has to adapt to his new circumstances, and Isolde is a sweet and tormented heroine who has spent her entire life in seclusion. The attraction at first sight between them felt magical, and I loved how Angelo boosted Isolde’s confidence and didn’t give up on winning her over.
Because of a birthmark on her face, Isolde Fairfax has spent her entire life in seclusion at her estate, Grimsfell Hall, in Cornwall. Since her father’s death, it has been her duty to preserve and protect the centuries-old mysteries embedded in the ancient stones of the estate and has come to terms with living in isolation and never being able to leave Grimsfell Hall. When Lord and Lady Trenwith invite Lorenzo Di Bianchi to visit them at Grimsfell Hall, the country estate they’ve rented, where they’ve discovered hidden masterpieces by his ancestor that they tracked down for Lorenzo, Angelo Scott decides to accompany his friend along with his grumpy uncle Nicolas. Ever since Angelo’s older brother Marco got married, Angelo has felt useless as the spare heir and like a fifth wheel during the honeymoon phase of the new couple in love. Soon after his arrival, Angelo is captivated by the estate’s mystical atmosphere. While searching for Matteo’s hidden treasures, he feels as though he is being watched and, one night, encounters a mysterious woman hiding in the shadows who disappears Isolde is fascinated by Angelo and his companions and observes them secretly to experience human interactions from afar. Angelo is also drawn to Isolde, but she can’t believe that a beautiful man like him could ever look at her with anything other than pity or disgust…
If you enjoy moving historical romances filled with endearing characters, emotion, humor, heat, and a touch of mystery, you’re sure to love this book.

“The Phantom Romance” is book three in the sub series Inconvenient Ventures (the main series being Inconvenient Brides, this would be number thirteen overall), written by Nina Jarrett. Haunting, beautiful, emotional, and romantic is what comes to mind when considering this novel which I have just completed. This gothic tale created a thoroughly mysterious setting on the cliffs of Cornwall. The descriptions are so vivid they seep into the reader’s mind recreating the ambiance of this house full of guarded secrets. This story continues on with Lorenzo di Bianchi’s quest to locate his ancestor’s brilliance and those swept along in the search. Angelo Scott welcomes the distraction from his newly wedded brother. Angelo and the phantom hiding in the walls, Isolde Fairfax, were characters of immense depth. I liked them both and was committed to their romantic journey. I felt Isolde’s loneliness and despair, her fears and rejection. Angelo was life and possibilities to her. I liked Isolde’s intelligence and musical talent. I respected her commitment to protecting the secrets of the house. I liked Angelo’s innate sense of healing, his desire to protect. The secondary characters were just as interesting but did their job by staying in the background and letting Angelo and Isolde shine. Nicholas Scott was as grumpy and nonsensical as ever, Lorenzo flip flopped from hope to despair and back again as his journey progressed, Mrs. Roskelly was loving and supportive, one of the few Isolde had human contact with and, last but not least the newlyweds that followed the clues in the last novel that landed them in Grimsfell Hall Henri and Gabriel Strathmore, the Viscount and Viscountess Trenwith. Let’s not forget Grimsfell Hall, a living, breathing, wind blown, mysterious home housing centuries old secrets and is the safety net for the heroine. Grimsfell Hall is indeed a character in this tale. It is not often that a story brings tears to my eyes, yet this one did. Expertly written, a variety of memorable characters, gothic undertones, with emotion and passion—this is a novel I would recommend to anyone looking for a great read.

Angelo Scott left Florence and came to England with his older brother Marco and his friend Lorenzo. While his mother was Italian, his late father had been British and the second son of the Baron of Blackwood, resulting Marco being the current Baron’s heir. Thus Marco and Angelo’s reason for the journey. Lorenzo, on the other hand, had spent most of his life searching for what happened to his ancestor Matteo di Bianchi, who left Italy three hundred years ago at the behest of English patrons. It was Lorenzo’s contention that Matteo deserved recognition equivalent to that of Leonardo di Vinci….and he intended to prove it. The search led Angelo, Lorenzo, Nicholas Scott (Angelo’s contemporary uncle), Gabriel (Viscount Trenwith), and his wife Henrietta (Henri) to meet at Grimsfell Hall in Cornwall, for which Gabriel had secured a short-term lease. Now that her father was deceased, twenty-five year old Isolde Fairfax owned Grimsfell Hall, a labyrinth of hidden pathways, passages, and secrets. She often watched from secure hiding places as everyone explored the newly uncovered Hall of Reflections, and continued searching for more clues. Angelo eventually discovered Isolde, who had spent the last six years hiding away from people due to previous reactions to the rather obvious birthmark on her face. They found that they had many things in common, but past experiences colored her current ones, causing misunderstandings and trust issues. With patience and a broken flower, Angelo helped Isolde to finally find the courage she needed to be seen. Although the secrets of the Hall are clever, and the ending is positive, I found this to be a slightly heavy story stained with internalized rejection, feelings of unworthiness, fear, frustration and despair. However, given his personality, I wasn’t surprised that Angelo, the eternal optimist, brought insight, light and encourgement, resulting in a truly beautiful love match.

Living within the confines of hidden passages and rooms all her life, Isolde Fairfax’s only contacts are the servants who maintain her home. Her father told her that she is the guardian of this castle’s secrets, but never told her precisely what they were. Homesick for Florence and his family there, Angelo Scott is visiting his newly married brother in England. His cousin Lorenzo is there also, but is preoccupied with finding his ancestor’s artwork that has been lost for three centuries. They are both surprised by a couple whom Lorenzo engaged to help him in his search. Their quest for lost treasure takes them to Isolde’s home, where they search haphazardly without any luck. Unseen, Isolde watches them all behind the masterfully constructed architectural devices Lorenzo’s ancestor created. Read what happens when Angelo peers through the grilles to see that there is someone looking back. After 25 years will she have the courage to reveal herself to strangers? Will both Lorenzo and Angelo find the hidden treasures the castle withholds? Enjoy this romance that has gothic elements of mysteries, Arthurian legends, a castle on the cliffs of Cornwall, and crashing waves that whistle through the walls or is that an organ playing? Jarrett has written a poignant romance supported with complex characters, an intriguing plot, historical references to the Renaissance masters and their works, and intelligent dialogue. Her prose is comparable to that of Mary Balogh, but is supplemented with a detailed open door love scene near the end. Worthy of 5 stars 🌟 and readers will need a few tissues. I have received an ARC from the author and I am leaving an unbiased review voluntarily.
Highly educated, skilled botanist Isolde grew up sheltered, lonely and self-conscious because of her disfiguring wine stain. After her father’s sudden demise, she became a ghost in her own home, living her life in hidden passages, observing her unsuspecting tenants, fiercely guarding her home’s secrets. Angelo is a cheerful Florentine pharmacist who’s life was unexpectedly upended when he became the spare to an English baron’s heir. Feeling like a useless third wheel in London, he joins his friend on a trip to Cornwall – a quest for the man’s family legacy, and hopefully a way to figure out his own path.
She’s drawn to his light and warmth, he senses her presence immediately, and since curiosity overrules sense, he goes looking, and she allows herself to be found. Theirs is a precious but fragile friendship that slowly grows and sparks an inexplicable longing for more. A beautiful and very moving romance; angsty with just a splash of steam at the end.
His gentleness and consideration were heartwarming, her fear and doubt understandable, her reluctance a little frustrating at times, and even though it all happens rather quickly, it felt true. I loved that he fell for her before ever seeing her, and how his inability to reach her turned into an all-consuming yearning. Plus, the mystical gothicky setting worked like a charm! The misty cold weather, the rumbling ocean, the whispering cliffs, the music, their midnight meetings – they all played their part.
But, where the previous books had me rivetted with their mystery, passion and thrill, this one felt rather stagnant and repetitive at times. I was captivated by the romance, but, for me, the quest part was uninspiring. Angelo and his friends are stuck in their search, snapping at each other, turning in circles. Nothing really happens till the very end, and then it felt like too little too late. So I would say I enjoyed this book, but it didn’t completely meet my expectations.
Angelo and Lorenzo are beyond bored watching newlyweds Marco and Molly fawn over each other (especially at the table). Angelo misses his work as a healer and pharmacist. Lorenzo is anxious to continue the search to discover the works of his ancestor Mateo de Bianchi. An invitation to Grimsfell Hall takes the friends to Cornwall. They arrive to a find a mansion with a Gothic atmosphere and secrets of many kinds. Isolde Fairfax has always lived at Grimsfell Hall, sheltered because of a large birthmark on her face. She is well educated, a botanist like her father. She now inhabits a maze of hidden passages and rooms within the walls of her home. While searching for clues to Mateo’s secrets, Angelo feels a presence, Isolde. She is reclusive and unsure of herself, but Angelo is patient, kind, and understanding, and slowly brings her out. He learns that they have much in common as a botanist and pharmacist, and she knows other delectable secrets about her home. Will they find clues or answers to the mystery of Mateo’s art? Will Angelo and Isolde find a happy future? This is a captivating story with a continuing mystery and a heart-touching slow burn romance. The characters, familiar and new, make the story. Great addition to the series. I received an ARC of this book via BookSirens and voluntarily reviewed it.
The Phantom Romance is the newest book in Nina Jarrett's series that focuses on the search for the hidden works of a Renaissance artist related to one of the previously introduced characters, Lorenzo. In this story, Lorenzo, Angelo and his uncle Nicholas travel to Cornwall to investigate the latest clue. They arrive at a castle perched on a cliff that they soon discover is filled with its own secrets along with those associated with the artist, Bianchi. Angelo is torn between returning to Italy and staying in England after the mystery of Bianchi it solved but finds himself haunted by faints sounds and shadows behind the decorative open grates on the wall. What he doesn't know is that the castle's owner, Isolde, lives a cloistered life within the castle. She finds herself as fascinated by the handsome Angelo as he is with the mystery of the feeling of being watched. The Phantom Romance is written in a classic gothic style with tender love story at the heart. I love that it highlights the power of trust in a relationship that can change how one sees themself. Nina Jarrett always does impeccable research, and it shines in this story. I will not spoil the powerful reveal at the end of the book, but I will confess that it had me in tears. I received an ARC and am leaving a review based solely on my reading experience.
This felt like a cozy, slightly mysterious Regency romance with just the right touch of the supernatural.
The story follows Angelo, a healer with a unique sensitivity, and Isolde, a woman hiding away in her own home, both carrying their own loneliness. I really liked the setup of the old Tudor mansion—it had that classic creaky halls and hidden secrets vibe, and the mysterious music drifting through the house added a nice, eerie atmosphere without making it too dark.
Angelo was easy to like. He’s gentle, curious, and patient, which made his growing connection with Isolde feel natural. Isolde, on the other hand, is more guarded, and her hesitation about revealing herself made sense given her past. Watching her slowly open up was one of the more satisfying parts of the book.
The romance is definitely on the softer, emotional side, with a bit of steam mixed in. It’s more about trust and vulnerability than dramatic twists, though there is enough mystery to keep things interesting. The phantom element adds intrigue, but it never overshadows the love story.
Overall, this is a sweet, slightly spooky romance with a strong emotional core. Perfect if you’re in the mood for something comforting with a hint of mystery.

Very well written, full of sadness, love, emotions, adventure, mystery, ghosts, family, friends, society and secrets. Isolde has lived her whole life at Grimsfell Hall with her parents until their deaths. Her father has taught her most of the secrets that the hall needs protected but didn't finish before he died. Angelo Scott, his Uncle Nicholas and Lorenzo are looking for the works of Matteo diBianch so when they learn that he may be at this hall. So they travel there to find the secrets. When they arrive , they are greeted by Lord and Lady Strathmore, who has rented the hall for the searches. Together they all work to solve or find Matteo's works. They enter the Hall of Reflection to find an old organ and mirrors. Angelo feels someone watching them seeing shadows in grates. He finally finds Isolde, young and beautiful but with a birthmark on her face. It makes her uncomfortable to be seen so she hides in the secret passage ways with only a few to know she is there. With a lot of feelings and caring he helps her to meet his friends and becomes safe with him. Has a great happy ending and also great to have friends from earlier stories back with us. Loved this story. Would strongly recommend to all.
I received this story and leave this unbiased, honest review.
This is the story of Isolde Fairfax and Angelo Scott. Isolde has a birthmark on her face which she feels makes her flawed, and so she hides from the world in the hidden passages of her home, Grimsfell Hall. When Angelo comes to the hall with his friend Lorenzo in search of more clues to finding Lorenzo’s ancestor’s missing paintings, he senses someone watching him, and so Isolde’s secrets are revealed……..
This was an excellent addition to the Inconvenient Ventures series with great characters and an interesting plot wrapped up in a well written story. The author deals with Isolde’s issues of self doubt very well, you really get a feel for just how isolated, lonely and unwanted her birthmark makes her feel. Angelo comes across as a really nice guy with the way he’s so patient and willing to help, and he deserves a happy ending. I also liked the smatterings of Italian included in the book which I felt really added to how you viewed his character. I enjoyed this book and look forward to the story continuing in the next book in this intriguing series 🐈⬛.

Tell me why anything Nina Jarrett writes is something I'll never ever pass up? Well it's stories like this one between Angelo Scott and Isolde Fairfax, that's why!
Nina Jarrett has become a master in crafting stories with slow-burn romance and seemingly unattainable loves. This one spoke of a particularly haunting yearning for someone who is so close yet so impossibly unreachable. The reason for it gnaws at your heart, for it is borne by someone who has wrongly believed all her life to be hideous and unlovable because of the marks on her face. As I read the book, I had been feverishly eager to find out how Angelo was going to prove to Isolde that he wanted her, valued her, and loved her in spite of her marks. When I did, I just knew it was indeed a perfect grand gesture by Angelo of his genuine acceptance and devotion of Isolde. It was then with that act of devotion that cemented Isolde's resolve to finally emerge from her self-imposed isolation and step back into the world and into the light. What a life-changing journey it had turned out to be for both of them.
I was given a free review copy of this book. This review is offered voluntarily.
Nina Jarrett has done it again. I'm not usually keen on either Arthurian references or Gothic undertones, but this is a captivating story of a wonderful romance to which the overarching quest of the Inconvenient Ventures (for the works of Lorenzo's Renaissance ancestor) series is secondary. Well written and well crafted with some vivid descriptions and great characterisation. I love the way Nina always finds a different social issue to concentrate on and that she doesn't demonise men. The longstanding pain and despair of Isolde, caused by the cruelty of ignorant people which led her to retreat and hide away from the world, and the way in which the tender, healing and optimistic nature of Angelo overcomes her fears is an emotional but finally uplifting read. I also learnt interesting things about tulips!
This book is stand alone, but I enjoyed meeting up with characters from previous books and am very much looking forward to reading Nicholas's story and the continuation of the quest. I haven't a clue how that will end.
I was lucky enough to receive a free advance review copy from BookSirens and this review is entirely voluntary.
The charming and well-mannered Angelo Scott feels a lack of purpose in his life, and his friend Lorenzo, in his search for his ancestors’ lost works, opens a unique opportunity for him. I felt sorry for Isolda's lonely and aimless life. I was intrigued by how Angelo handled the situation they suddenly found themselves in, the development of romance, the mystery of the gothic atmosphere, and the interaction between the friends. I was captivated by Angelo's quick thinking and surprised by how far he was willing to go. I appreciated the emphasis on the protagonists' romance, their personalities, and their feelings in the face of a distressing situation. Lorenzo's quest has continued to lead the characters on adventures that have become further mysteries to unravel. I'm struck by the author's attention to detail, which entertains me and sparks my curiosity to learn more. I'm eager for Nicholas's story; he's a real tough nut to crack. I voluntarily reviewed this copy that I received from BookSirens.
I loved this gothic inspired, Beauty and the Beast style love story, especially with the continuing quest to uncover Matteo Di Bianchi’s hidden masterpiece.
The story picks up right where Book 2 left off, with Angelo, Nicholas, and Lorenzo travelling to Grimsfell Hall to investigate the secret room discovered earlier. The dynamic between these three is a real highlight. Angelo, the eternally cheerful optimist; Nicholas, the cynical, grumpy Viscount; and Lorenzo, completely consumed by his quest. Their banter adds warmth and humour throughout.
Then there’s Isolde, a hidden and reclusive woman who watches from within the walls. The instant connection between her and Angelo practically leaps off the page, drawing you in from the start. Of course, love is never simple, and Isolde’s past hurts shape her view of others, adding emotional depth to their relationship.
I highly recommend this series for its blend of mystery, romance, and genuinely heartwarming moments. It’s a story full of charm, intrigue, and the kind of love that stays with you long after you’ve finished reading.
A subsequent installment in a series. It could be read as a standalone story, but it reads best as part of a series. I noticed that I had already forgotten some things since the previous story and need to get back into the swing of things. The romance between Antonio and Isolde stands on its own; however, the reason why Antonio is staying at her castle, or even in England, is part of a longer-running story that is not concluded with this installment either. The romance is beautifully described. The story is somewhat superficial, although an attempt has been made to give depth to the main characters. What I personally find distracting are the Italian words and sentences used. I also find Isolde's background insufficiently developed; what is the role of her family in all of this? The humor in the story, especially between the men, such as between Antonio and his uncle Nicholas, is well written. I am also very curious about Nichoals’ story. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This story has a slow start and build, a bit different from the others. It is sweet and tender, the FMC is troubled but capable and resolute. The MMC, Angelo Scott, who we have met in the previous books is a lovely soul and they go on a journey of discovery. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Nina’s characters as always are wonderful and the story well crafted.

This is the third book in the Inconvenient Ventures series. I have read all the books in this series and the previous two, I love the ways the stories and characters intertwine appearing and reappearing throughout. I can definitely recommend all these books to any one who enjoys spicy historical romances. Once this series is complete I am going to go back to the beginning and enjoy the all over again.
This Regency Romance is the thirteenth book in the Inconvenient Brides series, and third in the Inconvenient Ventures series.
I always enjoy this author's books, and this one was no exception. The female protagonist, Isolde, has spent most of her life hiding away from others. Everything changes when she meets dashing, charming Angelo, who enjoys her company and craves her presence.
First of all, I loved the fact that this was set in Cornwall, as it's one of my favourite locations for a story. The storytelling was beautiful, and together with the Cornwall setting, it reminded me a little bit of a Daphne du Maurier book in parts.
Angelo made me swoon; he was very sexy but also had a vulnerability about him that I loved. I connected with Isolde too.
I love a little bit of spice with my romance, but in this case, I connected quite deeply with the romance element as it went to my heart; I even found myself tearful in places.
Another wonderful love story from this author, and I'm already waiting for the next one.

A phantom of flesh and blood? When Henri and Gabriel discover the organ in a room full of mirrors in the manor they have rented for the winter, they invite Lorenzo di Bianchi and Angelo Scott to join them of Cornwall. To their surprise, Nicholas Scott has accompanied the two Italian friends. Angelo immediately has the feeling that eyes are following him. Are the ornate grates found everywhere in the manor for more than ventilation alone? Sometimes, he sees movement from the corner of his eye. Who is this mysterious person? He has the feeling that it is a woman. Why is she hiding? Is she the person who plays so masterfully on the organ? One would almost believe in phantoms! Will they find new clues about the mastery of Lorenzo’s ancestor? I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This third book in Nina Jarrett’s Inconvenient Ventures series continues the exciting Gothic Adventure/Mystery/Romance tale worthy of Ann Radcliffe, which was left unresolved at the end of the previous book, The Hidden Lord. As with all of Jarrett’s books it is the vulnerabilities of the heroes and heroines that endear them to me, as they face their scars, physical or emotional, and move past them toward love and redemption. Also as in all of Jarrett’s books there are extended steamy passages, which I tend to skip, being more interested in the resolution of the relationships than in the details of their sex lives. I enjoy the books and look forward to the next in the series.

Angelo feels like he is being watched. Isolde feels trapped in a house reeking with secrets. I will admit, there is a LOT of “thought” reading and very little action in this story and found it a bit monotonous . I did enjoy watching Isolde bloom from a frightened woman to one of courage. Their chemistry was well written and Angelo’s protectiveness was awesome. Nicholas was the grumpy third party and Lorenzo was so focused on his quest, he couldn’t see past his own nose. I was especially awed by Angelo’s quest for the perfect item to show Isolde her true self, that was beautifully done. Not an action novel, but good nonetheless.

Charming mysterious quest and romance. The Phantom Romance continues the saga searching for what happened to the artistic works of Lorenzo de Bianchi’s ancestor Mateo de Bianchi. Lorenzo and his friends have been following obscure clues starting in Florence, Italy and journeying throughout England finally leading to Cornwall. They don’t have very specific information about what the treasures actually are but believe they are very valuable. Isolde Fairfax is the last of a family charged as caretakers of Grimsfell Hall and the mysteries it holds. Angelo Scott is trained as a healer and pharmacist. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. I found myself drawn in by the characters and intrigued by the complexity of the riddle.
Wonderful slow burn romance with gothic overtones! My favorite of the series so far! Isolde Fairfax is guarding secrets, and stays hidden because of those secrets and the birth marks on her face and body. Angelo Scott is a healer and pharmacist, looking for his place in England, and helping his cousin search for an ancestor’s treasure. The search leads to the Fairfax estate where Angelo and Isolde are drawn to each other before they even meet face to face. Can this attraction become more? Will Angelo realize the strength of his feelings for Isolde before she stays hidden forever? Can Isolde find the courage to come out of the shadows? I received a free copy, and this review is my honest and voluntary opinion.
The mystery continues and we see love blossom between Isolde and Angelo. They initially only communicate in the dark of night or glimpses through grates in walls. She's been hidden away from the world, guarding her family secrets for years. He's looking for more.
I enjoyed this book, visits from previous lead characters and glimpses into the next book in this series (will someone really tame Nicholas Scott).
We all have scars, some are just more visible than others. It doesn't mean we're broken, only different. And different isn't bad.

I felt the story dragged in places as there was didn’t seem to be much action, more thought and searching. The FMC is very with drawn due to her facial birthmark and she “haunts” the back halls of her home, guarding its secrets and watching her tenants. The MMC is very perceptive and feels her watching so his quest is to find her. She is a botanist and he is a pharmacist so they have a lot in common and complement each other. The setting is very gothic with a manor on a cliff and passages inside the walls. This is part of a series but could be read as a standalone without too much problem.
This delightful novel introduces us to the captivating characters of Isolde and Angelo. The main characters are adorable and have beautiful depth. Their relationship is filled with tenderness and subtlety. I found this book to be a tender romance. I enjoyed the story, which featured some mystery and a surprisingly enigmatic heroine.
I loved the book's title page. It captures the characters and the plot perfectly and subtly.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
While not as exciting as the earlier novels in this series, The Phantom Romance is more humane. Who of us has not known a "broken tulip"? Society often judges on external appearances, not on inner qualities such as kindness, sweetness, etc. Slow moving, yet very involving, the love story of Isolde who lives "in the walls," and Angelo, the always cheerful Italian pharmacist is sweet and endearing. I do recommend this novel. Although I received an advance review copy for free, my opinions are my own and freely given in this review.
