Forty, Fired, & Fighting Demons #6

Trapped on Limbo Lane: Paranormal Women's Fiction

Rate this book
So here's the thing about becoming the "Island Fixer"—it sounded like a great idea at the time. Repair some broken pipes, banish a few demons, and make enough money to keep my house from falling apart. Simple, right?

Wrong.

Turns out, when you advertise that you can handle both home renovations and supernatural problems, the universe takes it as a personal challenge. One minute I'm trying to remove a stubborn backsplash from a sweet old lady's kitchen (YouTube made it look easy, liars), and the next I'm accidentally releasing a demon that's been trapped since the 1950s. And that demon, by the way, is really good at paperwork and has some disturbing plans involving Hell's corporate takeover of Earth.

Yeah, you read that right. Hell has middle management now, and they're looking to expand.

Now I'm stuck trying to save my island home from becoming the underworld's newest franchise location, all while pretending I know the difference between drywall and dimensional barriers. My boyfriend Zane is annoyingly competent with tools and looks way too hot while using them. My mom and grandmother are ready to throw down with demons. And my best friend Astra keeps calling to check if I've demolished anyone else's kitchen yet.

The answer it's complicated.

Because when you accidentally open a portal to Hell during a simple tile removal job, "complicated" doesn't even begin to cover it. And neither does insurance.

Eliza is doing a renovation job which she pairs with dehaunting the house she's working on. Zane has come to help her if she needs it. Then as she is cutting into a wall she's sucked into the demon realm. As she tries to get away from the demons seeking to take her into processing. Along the way she finds Zane who followed her through. Now they are running through the different zones of hell. Who knew there was a suburban zone, a metro zone....oh so many! Zane is injured and they're captured. Now she must figure out how to get her and Zane out . He figured out that she was targeted and they need to get back to find out who.
The only good thing is that Zane professes his love for her. Now they need to survive to investigate who did the targeting and what this bond is between them.
The story pulls the reader in as Eliza is trying to tear out tile. Then the reader is pulled through the portal and is running with first Eliza and then Zane. Fast paced and thrilling and the reader is left breathless.

Beyond the Gate: One Fixer’s Fight Through Hell for Love and Escape

Eliza, the Island Fixer of Saltcliff, has been enjoying a few weeks of peace, using her unique blend of supernatural abilities and renovation skills to help locals like Mrs. Pemberton. While working on a kitchen remodel, her friend Zane visits. As Eliza begins cutting with a saw, a strange scent is released. Zane warns her, but it’s too late. She is violently pulled into another dimension.

She finds herself on a rundown city street called Limbo Lane, stalked by demons who smell “fresh human.” Taking refuge in a Gothic cathedral, she meets Father Dominic, a former human now running the Chapel of Perpetual Penitence. He warns her that she must find a demon named Vera, who runs “Dimensional Dry Cleaning,” before she is processed into Hell and loses her mortal status forever.

Eliza escapes through a dark tunnel into a bleak, nondescript neighborhood where souls perform endless, meaningless tasks. Her magic feels deeply suppressed, but she manages a weak illusion to hide from guards searching for an “uninvited soul.” She takes cover in a house, hoping to find Vera. Suddenly, Zane appears, injured and running from gorehounds. Eliza conjures a shield to save him. Together, they decide they must reach the Processing District. After finding a demon healing potion for Zane and fighting through more gorehounds, they traverse a prison-yard-like industrial complex, have a tense exchange with a demon named Khorax, and enter the Bureaucratic Labyrinth—a maze designed to exploit doubt, resentment, and mistrust. Inside, they face a vision of Zane’s father.

They eventually find a strange hallway that doesn’t fit Hell’s aesthetic and meet Sarah Martinez, a former art teacher who has learned to defy Hell’s rules. With Eliza’s magic feeling less suppressed in these tunnels, she begins searching for “tears” in reality to exploit for escape. The group stumbles upon an area called the Metro, where a sentient train has developed consciousness. They plan to free as many souls as possible.

Traveling through a light-absorbing dark tunnel, they are attacked by Track Wraiths—former workers turned into monsters. Eliza and Zane battle them while other refugees join their cause. Reaching Central Station, Eliza digs deep into her buried magic to open a tear for the refugees. Many escape, but a horrifying Supervisor Wraith severely injures Zane. As Eliza closes the rift to save him, the Lord of the Fifth Borough, Vexaris, appears. Intrigued by Eliza’s gatekeeping abilities, he orders her captured. Eliza passes out as she and Zane are taken.

Eliza awakens bound in a metal chair. Administrator Thessaly, a demon, lists her violations. Zane has been reduced to “Subject Z-7743.” Thessaly explains that Vexaris wants to use Eliza’s dimensional-manipulation skills. Eliza is dragged to classification, where she sees a bruised, vulnerable Zane. Assessor Kline asks her absurd questions, then she is placed in a stark containment cell. Her magic is gone. She endures sessions with Evaluator Thrane, refusing a deal from Thessaly that would betray Zane.

Now designated G-4291, Eliza is taken to Technician Corvus, who maps her emotional centers in a horrifying process. Dragged back to her cell, she hears Zane calling for her. Thessaly eventually brings them together. Zane is badly hurt. While resting, they map weaknesses in Hell’s systems. A fellow captive, Vincent (a former HVAC engineer), reveals a possible escape route through the ducts. Thessaly offers Eliza 24 hours to find a solution. Observing power fluctuations that temporarily deactivate Zane’s collar, they plan to time an escape. Zane will use his full demon strength to open the ducts, but his collar will track him. Eliza bravely asks Thessaly for help.

Thessaly agrees, confessing she lost her own daughter years ago. She gives Eliza a window of time and a chip to help escaped souls. After Zane endures processing and is returned, the plan is set. They enter the ducts, reunite with Vincent, and discover graffiti left by other refugees. A survivor named Elena, a de facto leader, introduces herself and her group. Now they must also contend with a deadly entity called the Hunter. Eliza’s magic slowly returns. She knows she must open another tear.

They reach another Metro section, and the Metro spirit agrees to help if Eliza promises to prevent its destruction. In an area where she feels familiar magic, Eliza realizes her mother is trying to break through from the other side. Before she can act, Vexaris appears and offers a twisted deal to save Zane. Eliza refuses. Vexaris attacks; Zane (in full demon form) retaliates but is gravely wounded. The enraged Metro spirit floods the tunnels with white light. Eliza and the others flee toward the light, believing Zane may be lost.

Processing officers take Zane. Heartbroken but determined, Eliza refuses to leave without him, hoping Thessaly can help. She finds Thessaly, who leads her to the processing facility. Thessaly works to release Zane, but he is unresponsive. As a final act, Thessaly disables the magical suppression. Eliza’s power floods back. As they escape, Vexaris blasts her. Vincent heroically rams into Vexaris, buying them time. They reach a platform with more refugees.

Eliza finds a microscopic tear her mother created. Reversing her gatekeeper abilities, she rips it open. Her mother and grandmother, Mimi, help from the other side. Exhausted, Eliza demands everyone go through. Armored guard units approach. Eliza feels that a part of Zane remains in processing. In an unprecedented act, she weaves her magic into the dimensional rift, creating a portal that restores Zane to wholeness. Weak but alive, Zane grabs her and they jump through. Eliza and her family work to close the rift, though some processing officers make it through. Her magic is now intertwined with the rift, making closure difficult. Together, they manage it, but there is backlash.

They reach relative safety on Saltcliff. Victoria, a healer, is astounded by Eliza’s actions and orders her not to use magic for weeks or months. But Eliza knows the threat isn’t over—Vexaris will find ways to get her back.

After days of rest, Eliza’s friend Riley visits with an urgent vision. Riley has learned that someone Eliza trusted set the entire trap that pulled her into Hell. She cannot see the person’s identity yet, only that the betrayal was meticulously planned. Riley also senses a new, unfamiliar form of power within Eliza—something that has nothing to do with Hell. As the group begins to identify the trusted traitor, they are alerted to an even more terrifying threat on the horizon. Whatever is coming could impact Eliza in ways no one yet understands. The brave, fractured team braces for what comes next, knowing their fight for freedom and love has only just begun.

Trapped on Limbo Lane is the sixth book in the Forty, Fired, & Fighting Demons series. The books are interconnected and should be read in order.

Six weeks after her performance evaluation, while performing some renovations in Mrs Pemberton's kitchen, Eliza is pulled into another dimension. She finds herself in Perdition Point, the 5th borough of Hell! With dangers everywhere, she somehow manages to run into the Chapel of Perpetual Penance and meets Father Dominic. He wants to help and directs her to Vera, a demon who specializes in dimensional mechanics. In order to get there, Eliza has to travel across multiple boroughs and locate Vera's Dimensional Dry Cleaning, without getting caught and processed.

Along the way she find Zane, who didn't think twice about following her into Hell, but in trying to find her and keep her safe, he ends up needing medical attention. The two enter a demon's residence and locate a healing potion which helps, but they're almost caught. They manage to sneak into another zone where they meet Khorax, a demon who may or may not be helpful when he gives them guidance on how to find Vera.

In their meandering, the two find themselves in a dead zone and meet Sarah Martinez, the unofficial leader of the resistance. It seems there are others trapped in Hell who are holding onto their humanity and desperate to get out. Eliza can't leave them behind, but how will she get them out safely? And will we find out who was responsible for Eliza's unplanned excursion, and why?

Wow, what an adventure! This was a fantastic installment to the series. Once again, Trim had me on the edge of my seat waiting to see what would come next. I was shocked when both Zane and Eliza were caught and started being processed. What a horrifying experience, but I suppose that's exactly what one should expect in Hell.

I thought there were a lot of new characters introduced in the last book but there were so many in this one. I wonder if they'll make an appearance in the coming releases, especially with Vexaris promising to return and torture her.

Demons & Drywall, the seventh book, is expected in July. I'll be eagerly awaiting its release!

Eliza has started doing more than just quick repairs and dealing with demons on Saltcliffe Island. She has now taken on more repairs as the Fixer. Most people believe that she is dealing with ghosts, not demons. Well, she gets trapped and pulled through a portal to hell while doing a job. Zane is there with her. I freaked out, because of what happens next. Her magic does not work as it would normally as the Gatekeeper. I thought I loved Zane before! He shows up and he is battling as he goes to get to her. Zane knows a lot about Hell because of his demon father. There are a bunch of things that are horrific and that Eliza and Zane have to deal with. Then things get crazy and even worse! I found myself crying or cursing a lot.

Then even with all that they achieve there, things get worse. So much worse. From there on out it is so hard to keep emotions in check for them, and for me. Then we get to the part about Mimi and her shotgun. OMG, that never gets old. It is hilarious, every time and she is scary as all get out as her aim is awesome. It is also terrifying. lol.

Then things get even worse, to the point that I’m sick to my stomach. I chewed on my nails a lot while reading. It gets so bad that I began to shake too, because I forgot to eat, because I didn’t want to put the book down. The fight scenes are always great, but these! OMG! The book also gave me chills and freaked me out. I’m also going to have a few nightmares over it. I mean Eliza deals with a Demon Lord and what he says to her is nightmare worthy by itself. It is mind blowing, the ending. Then things get more hectic and we find out a few things that really upset me and then it is a cliffhanger again. Ugh. But, I can’t wait to see how the gang deals with it.

FORTY, FIRED, & FIGHTING DEMONS Series:
Source: Booksprout.
TRAPPED ON LIMBO LANE, #6 - What can I say other than I had fun read this interesting and entertaining story. 4*

SECRETS OF SALTCLIFF, #1 - I've read other books by Ms. Trim and this book is just as funny and entertaining. Good characters, although I did get tired of Eliza's mouth here and there, especially, in dangerous situations. Good story lines. Good humor. Good action. Plenty of magic. No vulgar language or sex. An intro paragraph to the next book is included, which reads like a lot more fun is on the way. 4*

THE WITCH'S FIXER UPPER, #2 - I hurt myself laughing throughout this book. But I was so immersed in the intrigue, the action and the lifestyle of this family and friends. Good suspense, ya know they're gonna win but just how .... Mimi is a trip, but she has the right to be sumting udder else. Good story lines. Great characters. Don't read the intro to the third book; it's not available yet, so you'll be sorry, I am. Drats. 5*

HAMMERS & HEXES, #3 - One. thing Ms. Trim can do is write an action filled book with good characters, intriguing story lines, and plenty of opened cans of whoopbutt. Complex, but with good humor, and plenty of unexpected surprises made for a fun read. Small use of vulgar language. 5*

AT THE GATES OF HELL, #4 - This addition does not disappoint. The ending is not a cliffhanger but there's more to come. Good characters. Good story lines. Good action and pace. 4*

HELL HATH ALL THE FURIES, #5 - Funny. Entertaining. Interesting. Intriguing. Immersing. Good characters. 5*

Trapped on Limbo Lane is book #6 of Brenda Trim's "Forty, Fired, & Fighting Demons" series.

Talk about a surprise trip to hell! Eliza is pulled through a dimensional tear straight into a realm she's been fighting to keep closed!

Eliza fights with everything she has to resist 'processing' and find a way to get back home. However, problems keep mounting as Eliza's magic is subdued and she learns that hell contains more than monsters. This book touches on the power remorse, and standing firm in a single decision.

I devoured 'Trapped on Limbo Lane' as there's so much going on that to stop reading became an impossible choice! I am loving Eliza's growth and development and I find myself celebrating her wins and cheering her on as she steps forward, time and again, to do only what she can do.

Eliza is magic!.

Eliza is supposed to be doing a simple job as the Island Fixer. Tearing out and replacing a kitchen backsplash shouldn't be that hard, right? It's all fun and games until you get yanked into hell through a dimensional tear. Then your half-demon boyfriend jumps in after you, something that you don't find out right away. Then you find out hell has a resistance movement. Who knew? But sending almost two hundred people back through a tear just gets you and said boyfriend captured, imprisoned, and subjected to 'processing'. Don't ask. Needless to say, Eliza is determined to get herself and Zane out of hell and back to Saltcliff Island. Even if it kills her, and it just might.

I felt like the hellscape had so much more potential than what we got in this book 6 of the series. Like, more hellish? I was missing some of Eliza's humor I have loved in the previous novels, but I do like the continued building relationship between her and Zane.
I was certainly hooked on finding out how the tear that sucked her into hell was made, by who and all that, and then the ending chapters where we get those answers felt really rushed. I think I was looking for a bit deeper/lengthier of an explanation for the event that gave the whole plot of this book.

Holy Hell Batman!
Eliza and Zane are in a real pickle this time! Dragged into hell, surviving being processed, saving a bunch of people, escaping twice and dragging themselves home, with the help of mom and the gang! This process does a number on both of them but affecting Zane more... at what cost when they are reunited and then back Earth side?? It is an event that results in a lot of inner reflection and gives new reasons for motivation. Poor Salt Cliff is being put through a wringer with barbed wire wrapped about the wheel! Looking forward to the next adventure with this group!!

It was an entertaining enough book I suppose, not the greatest take on hell I've read and a little too much yo-yoing between saving, letting go, saving again, letting go again etc. between Zane and Eliza, made the story a little monotonous and like you're re-reading the same plotline over and over again. Felt as though the end would never come. I did feel hooked enough to want to read it till the end so it wasn't really bad. I wouldn't read it again though.

This is book six of Forty, Fired & Fighting Demons. This was a book I did not want to put down. Eliza and Zane are sucked into Hell. It will test them in ways they may not be prepared for. I love the cross over characters and the suspense. This book does end in a cliffhanger and someone close to them may not be who they say they are.

Eliza blazes like a beacon of light installment of the series. Her fighting spirit never stronger than in the depths of darkness. She refuses to be separated from Zane - this is a story about love and loyalty, with such power and jammed packed with action - it would be an incredible movie! Love the family and friends support too.

Shocker of an ending I did not see coming, such a twist! And an absolutely worthwhile read

Wow didn't think this series could get any better and yet book 6 was amazing!

Full of intrigue and a rollercoaster of a ride with action. Eliza is doing some home renovation for a customer and accidentally, or was it on purpose by someone, a pocket opened right there in the kitchen tile to the demon realm. Not something Eliza planned on and now she has to find a way out.

The author did an excellent job keeping me reading well past my bedtime. I was cheering Eliza on while she tried to find a way out of the realm and not get caught. So many additional characters added to the story who also have been trapped in the realm and scheduled for processing.

If you haven't read this series I highly recommend it. While it could be read as a standalone reading from the beginning will help you understand who Eliza is. The characters are wonderful and you instantly fall in love with Eliza's grandmother. She is quite the character.

Highly recommend!
