Meine folgende Rezension beinhaltet auch einen Vergleich mit dem Film und lässt, so weit es geht, Spoiler aus.
Die großartige koreanische Verfilmung von Park Chan-Wook war mein Einstieg in das koreanische Kino und wird deshalb immer einer meiner Lieblingsfilme bleiben. Aus Angst vor einer Enttäuschung habe ich mich lange davor gedrückt, die japanische Manga-Vorlage zu lesen - auch weil ich nicht viele gute Mangas gelesen habe. Jetzt kann ich sagen, dass sich meine Bedenken nicht bewahrheitet haben.
Zunächst einmal ist Oldboy (2003) eine Interpretation und keine Verfilmung, die sich streng an die Vorlage hält. Park hat sich eigentlich nur an Gotos (im Film: Oh Dae-su) Gefangennahme, seiner Suche nach dem Grund dafür und ein paar wenigen anderen Begebenheiten bedient. Die Auflösung, die Charaktere und ihre Wesen unterscheiden sich teils sehr voneinander, zumal es im Manga auch einige sehr wichtige Figuren gibt, die im Film nicht vorkommen. Schon allein aus diesem Grund lohnt es sich, noch einmal den Manga zur Hand zu nehmen, um eine andere Geschichte im selben Rahmen zu lesen.
Shinichi Goto wird aus unerklärlichen Gründen zehn Jahre lang eingesperrt, schließlich entlassen und sucht nach dem Grund für seine Gefangenschaft. Er trifft Eri (im Film: Mi-do), die sich sofort in ihn verliebt und die beiden werden mehr oder minder ein Paar. Goto trifft auf alte Bekannte und auch sehr früh schon auf Doushima (im Film: Woo-jin), der aus Gotos Suche nach dem Grund ein Spiel macht, aus dem nur einer lebend als Gewinner hervorgehen kann. Gotos Bekanntschaften werden zu einem Labyrinth aus augenscheinlichen Freund*innen und möglichen Feind*innen, während man als Leser selbst nicht mehr weiß, wem man trauen kann, denn Doushima arrangiert mit seinen finanziellen Mitteln und Kontakten die abstrusesten Verwirrungsmanöver. Schließlich müssen nach einigen Wendungen die wichtigen Charaktere zusammenarbeiten, um das Rätsel zu lösen …
Die beiden Feinde werden vertraut miteinander und agieren absurderweise fast wie alte Freunde. Ihr Spiel ist im Manga sehr viel wichtiger als im Film. Goto ist die gesamte Zeit lang Doushimas Spielball und hat kaum kaum Gewissheit und Kontrolle. Teilweise hat man das Gefühl, es würde mehr um Doushima und seine Gefühlswelt gehen, als um Goto selbst. Der Manga vermittelt in seinen Bildern komplett ungewöhnliche aber dennoch authentische Emotionen. An vielen Stellen wird Dialog unterbrochen, um die Atmosphäre zu schaffen, die auch im Film aufgegriffen wurde. Dabei fällt einem oft auf, dass ein Bild Gotos Innenleben sehe viel besser transportieren kann als der Text.
Alles in allem ist Old Boy ein Meisterwerk und hat dieselbe Aufmerksamkeit verdient, die die Verfilmung genießt. Eine absolute Empfehlung an alle Manga-, Thriller-, Drama-, und Oldboy-Fans!

في هذا الجزء أخيرًا تتطور الأحداث على الرغم من الجو الكئيب العام للقصة إلا أنه أخيرًا بدأت تظهر الشخصيات مثل غوتو ودوجيما بطريقة أوضح. إذن هي لعبة بين الاثنين..
لقد تورطت في قراءة هذه القصة ولا مفر من الاستمرار فيها لمعرفة القصة الكاملة وأريد الانتهاء منها بسرعة. تحتفظ القصة ببعض الخصوصية عن الفيلم ولها غموضها المختلف.

Es intrigante ver como el honor atraviesa la perversidad de esta historia, entre más leo manga más me convenzo de la profunda importancia de la ética en las sociedades.
En este tomo el antagonista se presenta abiertamente e incluso llega a dar varias pistas sobre su identidad dejando poco a poco claridad en las reglas del enfrentamiento.

👉 Ha sido uno de los primeros mangas que leí, ya hace un tiempo de ello, y la tensión, furia e historia se mantienen durante los tomos de la obra.
👉 El guión en mi opinión es muy bueno, te va mostrando la inteligencia del protagonista y cómo no se deja llevar por el ímpetu una vez lo liberan. Poco a poco va labrando un plan para conocer quiénes han sido sus captores y hacérselo pagar.
👉 El dibujo con fondos definidos y oscuros, acompañan perfectamente la narración. Aunque el guión para mí está por encima.
👉 La película que si bien no es totalmente fiel al manga, transmite su tensión y tiene sin duda su hueco en el apartado de psycho thriller.

Avis intégralité : Découvrez une saga captivante qui vous emporte dès les premières pages ! Après avoir dévoré les extraits lors du festival de la BD en 2023, je suis devenu accro à cette histoire palpitante. Les premiers tomes m'ont totalement immergé dans leur univers, mais le troisième m'a laissé sur ma faim. Malgré cela, l'intrigue reste passionnante et le développement psychologique du personnage principal est remarquable. Un manga à ne pas manquer pour les amateurs de récits captivants !

Finally some progress! Albeit cloudy and murky but Goto has at least got something to go with.
I must admit that I'm now complete invested in this storyline and I can't wait to see how it unfolds here. Yes, knowing the film plot line might seem like the power is removed but it's been doing things differently here, so it retains some mystery.

series really turned a corner on this volume. also helpful that i gave up on looking for the similarities between the movie and the manga BUT this feels like it's finally staking out its own story in a real and concrete way versus earlier volumes that felt maybe a little closer to like season 1 of Lost where they were just like "let's just do weird shit until something makes sense down the line"

I think the movie should have included the scene where they fish by moonlight on a private yacht. It’s better than giving out exposition in a hotel room across the street from another hotel room… Wouldn’t fit in the movie, but hey! I liked it.

Трошки втомився вже читати, але більше не від процесу, а від того, що подій відбувається не дуже багато. Але саме зараз в сюжеті намічається конфронтація головного героя з антагоністом, тому жодних перерв не планую. Потрошки йду до кінця цієї історії.

Finally, the plot is moving forward a little bit.
The whole reading experience with this book is kind of meditative.
The slow pace allows one to look at the artwork - which is often pretty good.

In this episode, alias "Dojima" --- the man who had Goto imprisoned --- brazenly ingratiates himself with Goto's friend (at whose bar Goto has been staying) in order to actually get cause to Goto. Rather than staying away, he challenges Goto to discover the reason for Goto's imprisonment. The stakes are high: If Goto discovers the truth, "Dojima" will kill himself in a way that doesn't point to Goto at all. On the other hand, if "Dojima" must reveal the reason for the imprisonment, then Goto will die at "Dojima"'s hands.
The fact that Goto meets his nemesis does not help him in uncovering the secret of his imprisonment. Alias "Dojima" is not using his real name. And he had had plastic surgery to alter his face and his voice.
Throughout this chapter of the story, "Dojima" is shown extensively, much more than in previous chapters to the story. His face, as drawn in the comic, looks somewhat disfigured, and rather too white --- as if chalky. It is as if the authors are intentionally trying to draw him in such a way as to inflict upon the reader the subconscious feeling that "Dojima" is a a creep.

Goto's search for answers continues. In this volume, he works from the "search your past" hint, trying to remember anyone from school who might have hated him enough to lock him away for ten years.
He connects with "the girl" again, she appears throughout the volumes.
Goto actually meets his tormentor in this volume. The polite meeting doesn't shed much light on his situation though, as the man is unrecognizable to Goto. He points out that if Goto kills him, he'll never know the reason he was locked away.

Finally, Goto comes face to face with the man who locked him away for 10 years... and still has no idea who he is. The series continues it's level of excellence here and makes me want to keep reading even though it's far to late at night.

Stupidest thing that has happened in the story so far occurs in this book. I know he really wants to figure out why he was imprisoned but really his life would be a lot better if he just moved on and let the past go (but then there would be no story, so I should stop complaining).

Amazing. Really amazing. I can't understand why the 8 volumes haven't been collected into an oversized volume, but it's only a matter of time. The story is incredible and the artwork matches. So different (and so much more compelling) than the movie.

en lo personal, creo que en este tomo el drama y el suspenso fueron los que llevaron la batuta en el asunto. El encuentro entre los rivales sí bien fue una experiencia bastante fuerte, lo interesante estuvo en esas intenciones ocultas de alias Dojima.

Carrying over the action and tension left by chapter 2. Fits as an action movie, not in the way that Park Chan-Wook imagined it to be (his is way sicker and more amazing).
