100 Broken Hearts is the fun, new adult romantic comedy we've been needing.
A book that can revive your hope in love.
Theo Mayve is a love atheist. He’ll watch movies for the motorcycles and leather jackets but turn them off the second he gets a whiff of romance. To prove love doesn't exist, he’s broken ninety-nine hearts without falling for a single one. If he breaks one more before his brother’s upcoming wedding, he’ll win their bet to inherit the love of his life, Molly, his gramps’s vintage Mustang, and he’ll prove once and for all love is just an illusion.
To sweeten things, Astrid Lundgren, his childhood crush, former best friend, and sworn enemy—the only girl who's managed to come anywhere close to his heart—wanders back into his life when she sets foot in his auto shop. She’s brokenhearted and hoping to rekindle an old friendship. Theo, however, determines to make her Girl #100 and seek revenge for the past. As he begins to realize, breaking Astrid’s heart might not be as easy as he thought, especially when he starts to find his. A conversion of faith seems possible as his love atheism begins to wilt and time and his family work against him.
If he falls for the girl, he’ll have to recant years of professed beliefs, but if he chooses the car, he’ll lose his last shot at love. The mustang or the girl. Pride or defeat. Loneliness or love. Whatever he decides could ruin his life, for better or for worse.
I really enjoyed my first dive into the rom-com genre. I found the characters to be relatable and fun. I really appreciated the deeper philosophical exploration of love that the characters embark on. It is a book that takes you beyond the story itself gets you thinking about love in your own life. I would highly recommend this book to anyone
Loved this book so much! If you love enemies to lovers/second chance love, you definitely should read this book! I love how it is from both the female and male leads povs. Definitely recommending this book to all of my friends!
Really enjoyed this book! The evolution of the MMC & FMC are engaging and enjoyable to experience. Theo’s journey from pride to vulnerability feels real, funny, and earned. Can't wait for the next book from A.J. Mason!
Loved this book! There are so many “fluff” romcoms out there, but in this one you can feel the growth of the main characters & it makes you think about what love really is. Highly recommend & I can’t wait till AJ Mason’s next one!
This reminded me a lot of Diary of an Oxygen Thief by Anonymous — particularly in its central premise of a man who builds his identity around breaking women’s hearts, only to eventually confront the emotional consequences of that pattern.
In A Hundred Broken Hearts, the protagonist makes a bet with his brother: he must date and break one hundred women’s hearts before his brother marries in order to win his grandfather’s car. When his first love re-enters his life as potential “girl number one hundred,” the story shifts into a dual POV exploration of regret, pride, and emotional self-sabotage.
The concept itself intrigued me. There are interesting ideas here — love skepticism, inherited trauma, emotional avoidance, and the symbolism surrounding flowers as a reflection of relationships and loss. The protagonist’s “love atheist” identity, shaped by his parents’ separation, adds psychological texture to his motivations.
For me, the execution didn’t fully land.
The writing leans heavily introspective and often poetic, which may resonate with readers who enjoy literary, reflective romance. Personally, I struggled with the pacing. The internal monologues felt prolonged, and I found myself wanting more narrative momentum and emotional tension. While the realism is intentional, the balance between introspection and plot progression felt uneven to me.
There are moments of sincerity and emotional vulnerability, especially as he begins confronting his feelings. However, the overall payoff didn’t hit as strongly as I hoped.
That said, this is a debut novel, and completing a first book is an accomplishment in itself. While this one wasn’t for me, readers who enjoy slower, introspective, character-driven romance with literary undertones may connect with it differently.
Not every book is meant for every reader — and that’s okay.
This was a cute rom com concept with a bet dangling over the head of the main character Theo. He was determined not to love and was going to prove it didn’t exist. Enter our main female character Astrid, who was the only girl Theo ever loved.
It was fun seeing their love story unfold. The writing was very poetic when Theo was in his thoughts. I really like the rings making a full circle moment. I also really loved the small nods to all the classic love stories that are littered throughout the book.
That all being said, Theo was in his head a lot. And was constantly trying to convince himself and/or the reader how much he didn’t believe in love. It became too redundant for me.
Such a cute little romance story. It was something I wasn’t use to, especially it being mostly the MMC pov. I loved how this book was made for anyone. The only reason I didn’t give it five stars was because it was a little repetitive. All and all I thought it was cute and funny. I even teared up at the end which made me love it even more. As this being your first novel, I can not wait to read more from you
I thought this was a really cute book with a solid plot foundation. I really enjoyed the transformation of the main character Theo. When the big moment came, I was kind of waiting for a more drama from the characters, but I understand that they were a little bit less dramatic people than I probably wanted them to be. 🤣
I normally do not read romance books, but I absolutely adored this one. The characters were so well developed and the overall story felt very grounded while maintaining that romcom feel. It was very engaging and lead to some late night reads for me haha. Great book!
It’s not common to find a romance with a male lead and I found it refreshing. Theo is an introspective and sensitive man while not sacrificing masculinity. It was nice to curl up with a story that was relaxing and fun but also had some plot twists. With a lot of romances/beach reads I have the entire book figured out by the 2nd chapter but I enjoyed that this one had more substance. I definitely recommend it.
