Getting engaged wasn’t on my Santa list. I wanted cocoa, fuzzy socks, maybe eight hours of sleep. Not a fake fiancé with forearms that have their own fan base and a smile that ruins common sense.
My grandmother’s will “engaged by New Year’s or lose the twelve-million-dollar trust.” So I do what any not-panicking, rational woman I proposition my coworker.
Enter Wesley Kane — defenseman, Alaska’s favorite son, walking thirst trap. He needs a fiancée for Christmas revenge. I need one to keep my inheritance.
Perfect.
The rules lots of PDA, one bed, absolutely no follow-through. It’s good to set intentions.
Ten days. Way too much mistletoe. A small-town holiday where everyone thinks we’re in love. But somewhere between “no follow-through” and his hands on my waist, something slipped.
And now I’m not sure if we’re lying to them…or to ourselves.

She needs a ring. He needs revenge. What starts as fake turns dangerously real.
She needs a fiancé to unlock twelve million dollars. He needs to prove he’s moved on. One deal, two signatures, and a few days of pretending. But when Joy and Wesley fly to Alaska to sell the lie, it all starts to feel a little too real.
Joy is sharp, guarded, and used to leading with control. Wesley is gruff, emotionally shut down, and not looking to fall again. But surrounded by snow, family, and one too many close calls, their fake relationship begins to slip. One kiss changes everything.
Back in New York, nothing is simple. The past collides with the truth, and trust breaks in ways neither of them saw coming. They walk away, each wrecked but unwilling to say it’s over.
She throws herself into building something that matters. He buries himself in the game. It takes one hard push to get him to show up again, not for a deal but for her. This time, it’s not about playing a part. It’s real.
Joy learns to be seen without hiding behind her name. Wesley learns how to stay, even when it’s hard. Together, they build something honest and intimate from what started as a lie.
A steamy, fake engagement, opposites attract, grumpy sunshine hockey romance with slow burn heat, small town snow, and tension you can feel. It’s about learning to trust when it’s easier to walk away, confronting the weight of expectation, and finding someone who loves every version of you.
Audio: Clinton Woodhams and Shane Martinez deliver an emotionally rich duet performance. Woodhams gives Wesley grit and gravity, while Martinez brings warmth and depth to Joy. Every beat feels more intense in audio.
The Elevator Pitch: A fake engagement between a sharp-tongued media manager and a brooding hockey player turns unexpectedly real during one snow-filled holiday trip. Sparks fly, secrets explode, and what starts as a strategic play becomes a messy, magnetic love story full of tension, heat, and heart. When trust shatters, they’ll have to choose each other for real or walk away from the one thing that finally felt right. The audio brings every charged moment to life with a smooth, emotionally layered duet performance.
Joy wants to be just a regular woman or be seen like one, but she was born with a silver spoon in her hand. She works as the Media content creator for her uncle's pro hockey team, The Defenders. No one knows gets to know the real person behind the name, they judge her then leave or stay for with hands out. So, she stays single, until her mother tells her she has two weeks until she has to be engaged or lose her inheritance. Wesley is on the pro hockey team, The Defenders. He makes good money and is his dream career. He's from Alaska and his father-built a fishery from the ground up to support his family and when he retired, he assumed Wesley would take over for him, but that's not going to happen. His family and his community think he sold out, his h.s sweetheart broke up with him because he was never home. The holidays are approaching and neither Joy nor Wesley are looking forward to going home alone once again. Joy's mother is trying to set her up with a pompous ass, Wesley just doesn't want to see his ex on his best friend's arm. They come up with a plan to fake being engaged for the week, set rules they shouldn't break, things they need to do to make it all look real. Things don't always go as planned. They break their own rules, kisses become more, sex becomes so much than just sex and multiply times. Their families and friends believe what they see, they're happy for the couple and then the week ends but not on a good note. Joy left out some truths that Wesley didn't know until it was said at the event and he was hurt, then angry because he felt she lied to him, but did she? Rough time for the couple for a bit until her uncle has had enough and gives Wesley the address where Joy will be. He sees so much and understands a lot better. They love each other and marriage is in their future. Love wins again.
I love a good hockey romance and this had all the hockey goods plus the spice I love. If you've never read anything by AJ Summers start with this one! It’s short and sweet and spicy!
Joy is the girl who lives in an oversized hoodie with a camera strapped to her body. She is the media coordinator and keeps the hockey Gods in check and on camera. Only Joy isn’t exactly who she shows to the world and for good reason. But when her mother shatters her world and tells her she has two weeks to get engaged or she loses out on millions in inheritance money she has to come up with a plan and quickly.
Wes is a defensemen for the New York Defenders hockey team. With the holidays coming up he is not looking forward to going home. His ex, his one love who chose his best friend and stability over him will be there and he can’t look either of them in the face.
But during a charity skate Joy mentions her problem with needing a finance and he propositions her into helping each other. She needs an engagement to get her inheritance and he needs a fake fiancé to dote on him to make his ex jealous.
The only problem is at some point it stopped being fake and now they both have to decide what to do with these complications.
I loved this story. It had ice time, team shananagins, lust, and a happily ever after to make you swoon.
These characters are so amazing and I loved getting to know all of them. I can’t wait to jump into the next book and read about the rest of the team and where they find love!.

I really enjoyed this book. I love a fake romance that turns into a real one. Good world building and wonderful characters. I loved both Joy and Wesley. I loved her personality and how close she and the team were- and I loved Wesley's teammates! They were fun, I liked the banter, and they were supportive.
I can't imagine finding out you suddenly had two weeks to get engaged or forfeit a twelve million dollar trust (her mom made me so mad!!), not to mention Joy isn't even dating. Then being set up with an arrogant, pompous jerk who talks as if it's already set in stone because she practically has no choice. I admired that she didn't give in and managed to find her own man to fulfill the role in Wesley. Wesley was strongly attracted to her and when learned her plight, offered to step in. In exchange, she would meet his family. I was sad that he felt he'd disappointed them by not staying in Alaska and taking over the family business. And his girlfriend broke up with him because she couldn't handle the busy schedule of an athlete.
They were really cute together and had great chemistry. I liked his family as well. Shane Martinez and Clinton Woodhams did a great job bringing these characters and this story to life.
Short but addictive so hang on you won’t put it down until the last page has been turned. Joy wants her inheritance to setup her charity fund but there are stipulations she has to be engaged by the end of the year something that wasn’t on her list of things to do and so she asks the man she has worked with crushed on in secret. Wesley sexy as all get out media specialist hasn’t been home in a while isn’t ready to head home because he will have to hear about his ex. Her new fiancé and so when he is asked to be a fake fiancé, he agrees he isn’t going home alone (two birds one stone so to speak). The magnetic pull between has been there and the more they try to ignore it or remain fake the stronger the pull between them grow but what happens when fake turns to real and fate throws a monkey wrench into the best laid plans leaving you to wonder where you will land but will it all lead them to a happiness they didn’t see coming?
Despite being born into New York’s high society, Joy just wants to be seen for who she is, not what she can offer. The problem is, she has just two weeks to get engaged to make her eligible to inherit millions.
New York Defenders Alaskan hero, Wesley Kane is going home for Christmas, but he doesn’t want to go alone. He needs someone to take with him to show his ex that he has moved on and is happy.
They’re the perfect match, what can possibly go wrong. The just have to pretend to be engaged for 10 days, including spending time with the others family and friends.
This is an enjoyable faking dating to real romance story with a little bit of spice thrown in. It has great characters and realistic situations and conversations. Make sure you’re comfortable as once you start you won’t want to put it down until you have read the last page.

I love a great hockey romance. This one continues the Defenders series with Wesley and team media specialist Joy. Wesley is not looking forward to returning to Alaska for the holidays. He’ll have to hear all about his ex and her new fiancé. Joy needs to be engaged by year end to get her inheritance. They decide to help each other out - Wesley doesn’t have to go back to Alaska alone and Joy can fulfil her family obligations so that she can set up her charity fund with her inheritance. These two are instantly attracted to each other and although they set up rules they soon toss them out the window. Now they just have to navigate their social differences and trust each other to make a go of it. I really enjoyed the writing on this book. It was easy to read and had a good amount of 🔥🔥.

I love this series of books. I knew there had to be more to Joy than what I have read in previous books. Wesley is such a cool character. Joy picks him to dance with her on a tick tok presentation for the Defenders PR. This is where Wesley see more of her than meets the eye. They both have reasons for needing help in the relationship area. They start out as a fake engagement but it turns very real very quickly. There are some bumps in the relationship that they have to work through to get their HEA. The author did a great job with the storyline and the characters. It felt as if I was involved in their lives. I can’t say enough good things about this book. It can be read as a standalone but you get more context if you read the whole series. It is more than 5 star worthy!.

I loved this book when I first read it, but the Audible version truly brought the characters to life. The narrators captured every bit of charm, tension, and emotion, making the story feel even warmer and more immersive.
This novella is the perfect blend of holiday magic, humor, and heart. The fake engagement setup hooked me instantly Joy needing to be “engaged by New Year’s” to keep her inheritance, and Wesley, Alaska’s most irresistible defenseman, needing a fiancée for his own Christmas revenge. Their chemistry jumps off the page (and even more through the speakers).
It’s a beautiful novella that definitely left me wanting more, and the audio made it feel brand new all over again. Perfect for anyone who loves festive romance, fake-dating chaos, and characters like Joy and Wesley who feel real enough to fall in love with.
I loved reading The Pucking Clause. I love this series so much. This is a series of interconnected standalones. They can be read in any order, as I have not read all the books, and I do not feel like I am missing anything important. I loved the character development and the world-building. I love Joy and Wesley. Fake romance is one of my favorite tropes. I couldn't put this book down; I loved it so much. Plus, there was a bonus; it made me laugh. Books that make me laugh or binge eat automatically make it to where it's more memorable and a higher rating.
This is more for 18+ readers, as there is some content that may not be suitable for some readers. I loved reading The Pucking Clause. I highly recommend it.
This is a short book that is both entertaining and fun. Wesley Kane is a star defenseman for the NY NHL team. He is from Alaska and has been a solid and shy character through the series, while being a brutal bear on the ice. Joy Preston is the PR/Media coordinator for the NHL team. She is also the niece if the billionaire owner of the team, although no one on the team knows it. They enter into a fake engagement and then fall in love. Joy's omission of her identity defies words - it is unforgivable even though Wesley forgives her. This is a quick, enjoyable read and is recommended.
This story was a delight. The characters made a traditional trope fresh. Joy and Wesley were both likable and dynamic characters as the centerpiece of their story. The side characters, however, were also very well done, with sometimes unexpected depths (like Joy’s mom and Wesley’s dad). I thought Lila was a firecracker, and Dmitri was priceless. Book is SAFE. Heat is EXPLICIT. TRIGGERS are few- language, on-ice violence, opera. TROPES include Fake Relationship (engagement edition), Dancing Queen, Sports, Workplace Romance, Where There’s A Will.

AJ sure knows what she is doing when it comes to writing the very best page turning romance books that have some amazing hot characters. I found myself smiling when Joy's mom tells her she needs to be engaged by New Year's in order to inherit the money her grandma left her. :) Wesley sounds like the perfect hottie, and I would want him to fill the shoes if it was me. This book is going to make your day reading it and it won't even take you a full day because I had this book finished in an afternoon because I literally could not stop reading it. AJ deserves a gold star for writing this amazing romance book.
A deal for two. A New York defender and the team media girl strike a deal. The terms are specific. The rules are established. The timeline is finite. Both have their reasons. Somethings are omitted. The story is fun with plenty of the Alaskan hockey player present, of course the is the girl that makes it all worthwhile. There is much more story than there is hockey, although there are little sprinkles laced in. The peripheral characters stay on the sidelines with significant influence on the direction this tale heads. It reads much too quickly but is enjoyable every step of the way.
The Pucking Clause is a great well-written Christmas romance. I love a good Christmas story and when hockey is involved it is even better.
Wesley is a star hockey player in the NHL. He is from Alaska. Joy is the PR person for the team. She is also the owner's niece but this is a secret for the team. Wesley and Joy both need a fake fiancee' for their inheritances. They only have to fake it for a month so it should be easy. As they get closer to each other will it all still feel fake?.

A J Summers has an amazing way of writing couples getting together with some fake dating/engagement/marriage agreement!! This short story in the Defenders Diaries series has all the spice, banter, and of course the FMC, Joy keeping a secret from the MMC, Wesley that makes for great conflict.
Shane Martinez again does a fabulous job narrating and Clinton Woodhams is impressive narrating Wesley. Really enjoyed the audiobook!!.

-A fast-paced, heartfelt hockey romance filled with chemistry and charm. I received a free copy and am voluntarily sharing my honest thoughts.
Wesley and Joy’s fake engagement turns real as sparks fly and hearts tangle. Both are chasing freedom—he from guilt, she from expectations—and find healing in love. A.J. Summers scores again with passion, humor, and a perfect happily-ever-after.
A quick but delightful hockey themed romance with main characters Wes and Joy. Both have reasons going into a fake relationship only as they progress feels get real. I loved the dual narration on this audio version. The narration brought to life our characters and allowed the storyline to flow all the more smoothly. Captivating, sweet and steamy - this book had it all!

I get it.. holiday short story, insta-love, the whole nine yards. It was just entirely too much for such a short book. The tiny bit of drama wasn’t even that dramatic. In my opinion Wesley needed a grander apology than the one he gave, which I believe he didn’t even apologize for his behavior. Joy had every right to do what she did and ended up giving a big apology for it when she didn’t need to. Kinda lame.
Oh my goodness I don’t even know where to start. This book wrecked me completely. Every last bit was phenomenal. I laughed till I cried. Other parts reduced me to a sobbing mess. What an incredible love story. I now need to go back and read Dimitri’s story and Nate’s story. I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book provided by booksprout.
Short, steamy and engaging read. I love hockey romance, but if there is fake engagement involved it will definitely land on my list. It was funny and emotional, addictive and page turning. Loved Wesley and Joy’s love story and their too enthusiastic fake engagement.

Wesley and Joy’s story was okay. I really don’t like instalove all that much so that might be why this wasn’t really for me. There wasn’t much build up. One minute Wesley wanted a fake fiancé to show his ex what she was missing and the next he was all in love with Joy. I definitely thought the second half of the book was better than the first half.
This hockey romance is short, sweet and spicy! Joy and Wes are smokin hot together!! They have a pull between them that they can't deny. The character were great, the team shenanigans were fun and overall this was a wonderful heartfelt romance.

This was such a cute holiday read. Joy needs to be engaged to get her inheritence. Welsey wants to let his hometown know he isn’t a joke after his longtime girlfriend broke up with him. This arrangement will be beneficial for them both. They just have to keep pretending. There is no way it’s going to be real, right?
This was dumb. Wesley was honest from the beginning about why he needed a fake fiancée, Joy was not. She should've come clean wholly about why she truly needed him. The whole bullshit excuse of "I'm protecting myself so I can't let him know the fake persona I have to put on." Instead she made him look like an ass.
I love a good fake relationship story. This one was pure magic. Perfect for the holidays. They work together so them falling for each other didn’t feel so quick. They had that established relationship already. I loved every bit of this. Including when they went spicy despite their rule.
Wonderful fast paced story of two strong well written characters. He’s carrying guilt and she’s trying to out run her family’s status. Both trying to find themselves. The only thing in their way is themselves. Good book to add to your library.
I loved this book! First time reading this author and I'm so glad I did. I connected with the FMC immediatley. Her social media job and made for a fun link to the players and her fmaily background a good twist to the story. Wesley is a swoon-worthy MMC and I rooted for them throughout the book.
