Astronauts and others who explore outer space often experience a cycle I call the ultraview effect—moving from awe to humility to curiosity—especially when they leave Earth. This cycle helps them maintain perspective, stay open to new information, and adapt to changing circumstances. The ultraview effect uses amazement to allow one to reset perspective, discard false confidence, and acknowledge limitations, and encourages curiosity and cooperation, paving the way to new discoveries. Being receptive to information that contradicts our existing beliefs is powerful and a crucial requirement for scientific exploration. A false sense of certainty, especially unexamined, closes minds. This unearned confidence can often be dismantled through experiences of awe. While it’s possible to live without thinking much about what lies beyond Earth’s atmosphere, those who regularly explore and study space must confront the vast reality of the universe.

The concept of “awe” in English isn’t universal. In Japanese, for instance, ikei conveys “respectful awe,” while ifu indicates “fearful awe.” Both blend fear and respect, with ifu carrying more fear than the English word “awe.”3 French has the concept of admiration, which expresses approval but not fear. To convey awe, francophones use phrases like effroi mêlé de respect (“fear mixed with respect”) or plaisir mêlé d’effroi (“pleasure mixed with fear”), revealing that awe combines conflicting feelings.
Seeing the Milky Way like that was a nearly universal part of human life before artificial lights began to crowd out the night sky. It was also a major source of awe, that blend of fear, admiration, reverence, and pleasure that is so widely recognized. The feeling of awe appears to be something essential to humanity. Stimulating that feeling is very important and can be done in numerous ways. There is something about the awe caused by looking at the stars, however, that seems to affect us profoundly. It’s possible that the Milky Way has always been humanity’s greatest source of awe. Is awe a physical thing that happens to our brains and bodies or is it a phenomenon of the mind? Is it built in, or something we must learn to experience?
Anthropological research on awe reveals it to be another part of human life that is cultural. Awe is understood as something shaped by each cultural group through religious rituals, social structure, and shared emotions.
Journalist Natalie Angier interviewed Dr. Andrew Schafer (then president of the American Society of Hematology), and wrote: Blood can also be thought of as a private ocean, a recapitulation of what life was like for all the years we spent drifting as microscopic, single-celled organisms, “taking up nutrients from sea water and then eliminating waste products back into sea water,” Dr. Schafer said. Not only is blood mostly water, but the watery portion of blood, the plasma, has a concentration of salt and other ions that is remarkably similar to sea water.
We cannot know precisely how early humans experienced curiosity emotionally or cognitively, but it’s reasonable to infer that a species creating art, modifying tools, adapting to fluctuating environments, and devising music possessed some level of curiosity. Curiosity, as understood today, carries an optimistic perspective, involving the expectation that exploration will yield something new or valuable. Such openness, like tentatively tasting unfamiliar food, allows experiences to unfold rather than remain unexplored. While we can’t confirm this perspective in our ancestors, curiosity’s evident presence throughout human behavior and culture strongly suggests it is part of our shared heritage.
Getting beyond this planet, in my view, out into the solar system, the galaxy, and the universe, is the most important safeguard for the future of our species. And, though robots are helpful, the essential spearhead in this expansion is the human being, the astronaut, the cosmonaut, or whatever we may call the folks who people these voyages.
