Chosen One? Him? Gods help Armathia. When charming slacker Chaddick Questwell is accidentally anointed as the world’s next legendary hero, he figures he can fake it long enough to cash a few quest rewards and bed a few admirers. But the universe—and his infuriatingly loyal paladin sidekick—has other plans.
Now, saddled with a glowing sword, a golden retriever in armor, and a dangerously sexy, slightly obsessive elf who keeps blowing things up, Chaddick must bluff, brawl, and bed his way through destiny before anyone realizes he’s a fraud.
Because saving the world is easy. Looking like a hero while doing it? That’s the real grind.
This book was actually pretty good, though it recovered from what I consider a rough start.
The MC is an orphan with little to no prospects who entered a "hero college" to train to become a hero. He wasn't looking to be the "chosen one", but more a side quest hero, since he doesn't have a family with deep pockets to fund the kind of equipment needs a chosen one needs. So naturally, as the book starts, he's being named the Chosen One. And having a canid (dog) woman named as his official side-kick, a paladin from a family with a deep tradition of excellence.
From there, the story hits a weak point for me, where the MC proceeds to have a foursome with some (for lack of a better term) "badge bunnies" go out of their way to entice the MC into having sex with them. The scene does have a point, since it shows both his mentality and shows the paladin woman that he's incorrigible. But it's also a throw-away sex scene designed to show off the sexual prowess of the MC with women the MC will never see again.
The LIs are the paladin and a mage/alchemist that just blew up her lab and was threatened with expulsion from the Mage Guild unless she completes a quest that will likely kill her. I actually liked both LIs quite a bit. They are both quirky, and the sex scenes involving them were extremely well done. Yes, they end up touching each other sexually, so if you are terrified of the LIs touching each other sexually, you might as well avoid the book. But it was really well done, showing the exploration that each is trying out in a haze of lust. That made the scenes extra special to me.
The combat scenes were a bit lackluster, so if you are looking for the MC to be an OP brute that hacks his way through everything, you will be disappointed. The author keeps them bare bones, with the important elements there and that's about it.
I very much look forward to book 2 in this series.
Following a hero from a poor background who is made into the new chosen one and definitely doesn't want the spotlight, we follow Chaddick Questwell on his journey to not die horribly due to being very broke. With a top tier sidekick Goldie Guardlight at his side and her disapproval of his lazy ways when she isn't squirming under his commands, the two set out to do some side quests to start gaining 2 of the 3 Gs of questing, Gold, Girls, and Glory, except Glory usually gets you killed and doesn't pay for gear or warm your bed, so that one can come later, no matter how often he is reminded that it is his duty as the chosen one holding the sword of prophecy to save the world. Join this light hearted romp with entertaining characters as Chaddick fervently tries to avoid Destiny, Debt, and Death with mixed success. Can't wait for future installments of this hilarious tale that had me cackling in my living room several times.
MC was hard to like and will sleep with anything that has a pulse, so there is no feeling of permanence with any of the "relationships". If you're looking for a book that's just smut, with no meaning behind it, then this is the book for you.
