Flushed with their letter-writing success with the boys from a nearby school, the literary courtships of Lisa and Palmer take a turn for the worse when the two argue over whose pen pal is more trustworthy
P.S Forget It Palmer and Lisa are at odds over their pen pals (Simmie and Rob). Simmie has been sending Palmer romantic letters. Lisa is doubtful whether they're sincere. So when Rob starts doing the same thing Palmer is smug. But then weird things start happening. Rob begins to stand Lisa up more and more and then she finds out he's in the hospital after finding out the true culprit and the reason behind all the letters and Rob's MIA's.
MY THOUGHTS: Ok. From the beginning, I get why Lisa (especially today) may have thought Simmie was just feeding Palmer a bunch of lines. (Foreshadowing) Especially since we know they don't stay together and her pen pal/boyfriend becomes Sam O Leary. I didn't read the one yet where they break up, but I can pretty much guess it's over something Simmie did. How you get them is how you lose them and I think Palmer got him from Amy being sneaky. So Lisa has that right to question his motivations. Something that I would have been all for too throw into the argument about Simmie's "sincerity". Palmer, I like less and less because let's be honest, sometimes she can be a real bitch. No matter what book you read and who her pen pal is at the moment she just seems to throw them (him) up in the other girls' faces. "Simmie's so gorgeous!" "You all are just jealous because Simmie's letters are better." "Sam is a PROFESSIONAL musician." You get the picture. The book's want us to think that underneath it all Palmer's decent (and there are a few moments) but she just comes off as a snob. Take the last frat prank for example. Instead of having a sense of humor and laughing it off she was more concerned about how Simmie's costume made HER look. That irritated me highly! You can't stand to sit next to someone 1 minute that's not dressed up in designer sunglasses and you act like you're embarrassed. But let's not get on just Palmer. Lisa over-reacted too. I get the need to rush out in the middle of the night to be with the person you love. I started to think about that after I read this and I would have done the same and taken the risk but (and I'm not saying Simmie was right AT ALL) if she got caught she could have got expelled because Alma Stevens is ridiculously strict. Really? Guys can't even come on the grounds or they get threatened? But it was a PRANK (a bad one true), but she jumped to conclusions. She knew about the secret societies (let's just use the modern word frats) from Mars. She knew Rob was being considered. BIG FLASHING SIGN. She knew Rob didn't unusually write over the top letters to her. If anything she should have jumped to the conclusion this was a part of Rob's initiation. She still should have been rightfully pissed because no one wants to get stood up. But then after it was over she should have said "Hah Hah Simmie! You got me!" It was a little rash to break up with Rob. I just think going on what she'd heard she should have at least considered all this had something to do with frat stuff.
RATE 6 I think the best thing I got out of this book was it made me think about was how far would you go if found out someone you loved was hurt or sick or in the hospital. And would you take the risk no matter the risk to find a way to see them? And how you can know you care about someone, but just don't realize how much until you're in a situation where you think something might happen to them.
