The title of this book would more properly be something like A Brief History of the Tension between Universalism and Particularism in Judaism, with an Afterword of Suggestions about How to Save Judaism in Light of the the Israeli Government's Horrific Actions in Gaza, but I guess that's a mouthful and much less marketable!

This is a slow-moving, thoughtful book that gave me a lot of food for thought. I am not a Zionist in the way that Green is, but we share a commitment to universalism as a Jewish value, and I am honored to learn from such a wise teacher.
"The tools of ancient religious tropes and symbols are so powerful that they cannot be left in the hands of those who interpret them in the narrowest and most exclusivist ways. They need to be taken back" (129).
