I really enjoyed this third book. I was invested in the characters and liked where they ended up.

My wife surprised me with signed copies of the second and third books in the series for Christmas. What a wonderful gift! I loved both as much as I did the first one. This Trilogy is breathtaking and I did not want to put it down, many times reading until the wee hours of the morning. The storytelling is brilliant and the author a wonderful wordsmith. "The Scouring" ends in a manner that leaves me longing for more.

I didn’t know it, but Sudden Quiet is the series I had been waiting for for years! And The Scouring may be the best concluding book I’ve ever read! These characters have burrowed their way deep into my soul and it’s difficult to imagine not spending part of every day with them. This series is simply amazing – filled with danger, treachery, heroic sacrifice, betrayal, life-changing decisions, extreme honor and dignity, redemption – the list goes on! But most of all there is a great deal of love. Love for the land, love for the indigenous people who are her caretakers, love for the incredible characters who fight for what is good in this world. Love for the human race. I seldom reread books I have completed, much less multi-book series. But I have already started reading Sudden Quiet from the beginning! This saga will stay with me for the rest of my life! Thank you, Mr. Veith!

Joshua Veith’s The Scouring is the third installment in the Sudden Quiet series. This is a post-apocalyptic novel that picks up nearly two years after the collapse of civilization. I must warn newcomers to the series that I strongly recommend reading the first two books before beginning this one. Readers might be able to follow the broader strokes of the plot, but to fully understand the scope of what is going on, read the first two installments. Many of the relationships, characters, and emotional stakes have already been established early on.
As the trilogy continues, there is a focus on survival. What is coming next? There are communities attempting to rebuild, competing factions are fighting for control, and the ordinary people in this world are forced to decide what kind of future they really want to create. Readers are introduced to Bob Campbell, a former slave who is hiding among an Amish family. The story from this point immediately grabbed my attention. He is trying to protect vulnerable people despite the fact that he has a troubled past. He is trying to redeem himself. This actually establishes one of the novel’s central themes about whether or not people can actually change after making devastating mistakes. Then readers are taken back to Beaver Island, where Miinan and the Tree Academy are teaching the next generation how to live in harmony with the natural world. There was a scene I found memorable where the students were learning ethical hunting practices. They also learn communication through the island’s fungal network and the importance of respecting the life they harvest. So things seem hopeful right before the story turns dark.
There were several characters that I felt stood out. Miinan is one of those characters. She is a teacher, mentor, and tree-talker. She also represents the possibility of a healthier relationship between nature and humanity. Her storyline is one of the most gripping, especially after being captured and imprisoned. Mukwa is the emotional heart of this story, in my opinion. He is devoted to Miinan. He is also loyal to his friends. I like how most of the moving passages involve visions and shared experiences that connect Mukwa, Miin, Samantha, and their late mentor.
But Bob Campbell is probably the character that I think has the most impressive transformation. He struggles with reconciling what he used to be with the person he is trying to become. One of the scenes with him that stands out for me is when he attempts to transport the wounded Reverend Walker through hostile territory while dealing with suspicion from multiple factions.
The plot develops at a steady pace as Veith does a great job connecting so many storylines. That is not easy to do. I was really invested in the search for Miinan, and I could feel how increasingly urgent this became. The planning scenes between Mukwa, Sparrow, Robert, Freddy, Thorn, and others are probably some of my most enjoyable scenes.
Overall, this third installment of the Sudden Quiet series, The Scouring, is a combination of environmental and social upheaval as well as ensemble storytelling. Veith mastered the integration of indigenous perspectives with ecological mysticism and Great Lakes culture that I can relate to as a Michigander. Readers who enjoyed The Deluge by Stephen Markley will get the most out of The Scouring.

In the concluding chapter of the The Sudden Quiet triolgy, Veith delivers a masterclass in storytelling that defies all genres by displaying the best elements of all of them. There is satisfaction and heartbreak and hope and tension and wonder and dismay all wrapped in the prose of a skilled hand that acknowledges influence while weaving something wholly new. This third book is a promise kept to all readers of the previous two entries. Endings can be polarizing, but one that suggests a beginning is always welcome. What a welcome delight.

I loved everything about this whole series. The setting is Michigan, there's a very important scene in Book II that involves the Might Mac, and so much more! First Peoples spiritual beliefs are treated with the dignity they deserve and are very important to the plot. A dystopian series that takes place after devastating global loss (my kind of story!), if this is your vibe, you won't be disappointed!

I couldn't wait to begin the final book of the series. The final book was wonderful and I loved this series. I loved the way Josh tied up the "loose ends" of the different characters. Great series one that I will highly recommend. You have to get all three, which I did and you will be very glad you did. These books will remain in my collection and I will re-read them all again and again.

I highly recommend this series! All 3 books were excellent reads that I could not put down. The Scouring tied everything up and gave a satisfying ending while still making me want more!
