Silk & Iron is a slow burn, spicy enemies-to-lovers romantasy full of court intrigue, betrayal, and deception. Mind the cliff.
Alexis Calder writes sassy heroines and sexy heroes with a sprinkle of sarcasm. She lives in the Rockies and drinks far too much coffee and just the right amount of wine.
Thank you so much Alexis Calder for allowing me to read and review Silk & Iron in advanced and being apart of your amazing street team! I went absolutely feral over this book and I know everyone else will too!
This book was captivating, addictive and I could not put it down. From start to finish my motto was just one more chapter; I just needed to know what was coming next.
Sabina the FMC is the princess of Iskvaland. She has come to the Pendralian Empire to wed prince Caiden; who is also the heir. Sabina, is actually Taylan. Taylan is a peasant, who has lost her whole family by the emperor's commands. Taylan ex boyfriend Lee, also the leader of the rebellion after her mother passed convinced her to take princess Sabina's place as they look eerily alike. Sabina/Tay go undercover and are set on seeking revenge for her families death... but at what cost?
There was so many twists and turns in this book, I truly couldn't predict a single thing. The supporting characters held so much value to the plot and were incorporated seamlessly! The storyline was flawless. I ATE this up in no time!
I am so eager to see what comes next! Come on book two!
Taylan is a rebel that wants to take down the emperor and the entire empire all together, to make them all pay for what happened to her family and the people that she loves. How you make ask? By deceiving the emperor and the prince, Caiden, that she is the Princess Sabina of Iskvaland and is there to marry him in exchange for both families to be political allies. However, she becomes engrossed with a certain someone, one who killed her brothers. There is a ceremony that will be placed to see if the Gods will provide her a gift and make the emperor and Caiden happy. It’s either you get a gift or you die. Will she be able to survive? Will she be able to take down the emperor? Who does she love?
This was AMAZING! I genuinely need book two to come out immediately. This book had the yearning, the slow burn, the hatred, the conflicts, UGH it had it all. The plot twist at the end was truly incredible. I always knew that the special character was bad, HOWEVER, I wasn’t expecting that ending to happen and make way to book two. This book also had female rage and was fast paced. The way that everything made sense, the scenery was perfect, it felt like I was watching a movie in my head. Everyone, please read this book, also it’s on Kindle Unlimited!
Thank you to Alexis Calder for the opportunity to read an Advanced Reader’s Copy (ARC) in exchange for my honest opinion.
Omg! What did you do to me Alexis Calder??? Ma'am I need book 2 now!! My heart!!
I loved this book so much! Everything about it was AMAZING! The characters, their growth, the plot, the plot twist and the absolutely epic slow burn (and when the slow-burn ignites, OMG it's HAWT 🥵)! This book had everything from forced proximity (but not with who you'd think), enemies to lovers, found family and touch her and die. Y'all you absolutely do not want to miss this absolutely amazing book. It was EVERYTHING!
Thank you so much to Alexis for the book early!! I really enjoyed this book! The writing was really good, the characters were intriguing I loved the “princess” and her ladies. And a special male character I won’t spoil 👀there were a few “oh damn” scenes and I absolutely did not see the ending coming! This was a slow burn for sure but I ate it up!
Can we got book 2 asap!!!! This is book 1 in a dark Romantasy series. I absolutely loved this book. This book has lots of secrets, magic, hidden identity and a slow-burn, enemies to lovers . Sabina is a Princess from Iskvaland. She is really Taylan a rebel who seek justice for her brothers. She believes the emperor, the prince and there enforcer are responsible for their deaths. Caiden is the prince of the Pendrailian Empire and is to wed Sabina. Brevan the emperor’s enforcer. He has powerful magic. He was found and raised by the emperor when he was young. Brevan and Sabina dislike each other when they first meet. Throughout the book those feelings change.

The emperor. The prince. The enforcer. I want them all dead…Until I fall for one of them.
RECOMMENDATION: MUST READ ROMANTASY!!! “Silk & Iron is a slow burn, spicy enemies-to-lovers romantasy full of court intrigue, betrayal, and deception. Mind the cliff.”
Deception. This book had me hooked from the first page all the way through to the brutal cliffhanger on the last page. I stayed up all night to finish it in one go. There are twists and turns you don’t see coming. There is tummy-butterflying tension and toe-curling spice. It hasn’t released yet and I’m already begging for book 2!
FAVORITE QUOTE(S): “‘You came here in silk, but you’ll leave here in irons.’” -The Emperor & “‘It is done. I accept the betrothal. She is as expected.’” -Prince Caiden & “‘Maybe nobody gets to choose. There’s an illusion of options when we’re young, but I don’t think it even existed then.’” -Princess Sabina & “I want to memorize the way his body feels against mine. The way his tongue teases, the way he tastes, the way he kisses me like he would burn the whole world for me.” -Princess Sabina & “I don’t know how I’m supposed to stay away from you.” “Then don’t.” -😋
TROPES: All the best tropes! Slooooow burn! 🔥 Enemies-to-lovers Forbidden romance Morally gray Deception Court intrigue Hidden agendas 2 love interests… or just 1? Evil immortal emperor Unique, secretive & mysterious magic Cliffhanger!
GENRE, POV, PAGE COUNT: Genre is Dark Romantasy. POV is of FMC in the first-person. Page Count is approx 400 pages.
AUDIOBOOK REVIEW & TIME LENGTH: No audiobook at the time of this review.
FMC: Princess Sabina Volkov: 23 years old, Princess of Iskvaland, sneaky, devious, sly and stealthy. She is not who she seems. Deception is rampant.
MMC: Prince Caiden Pendral: approx 26, Prince of Pendralia, powerful magic, wicked, depraved and malicious.
Brevan: the emperor’s Enforcer, not from Pendralia, forced to stay, powerful magic, cinnamon roll vibes with violent past.
STORYLINE/PLOT: It’s hard to know how to explain the storyline. If you read the blurb it tells a lot. It’s best to go in blind. If you choose to go in blind as I did, don’t read on. Though, I will not reveal anything important that’s not already mentioned in the book description.
Iskvaland’s princess has been sent to Pendralia for a political alliance marriage to the prince.
The princess has secrets. The prince has secrets. Pendralia has secrets. Deception and court intrigue play a huge part in this story.
Pendralia is responsible for starving its people in Iskvaland, leaving them to freeze to death in the winter. When the people created a rebellion or stood against the emperor, they were killed with whole villages burned to the ground in one go. When Taylan’s last remaining family is slaughtered, she is eager to kill everyone responsible. When the opportunity arises, the rebellion sends her in to pose as Princess Sabina Volkov and she walks right into the home of her enemy to marry their prince.
What she doesn’t expect is to catch feelings for anyone while she is there, especially not one of the ones she wants dead. No matter what, the emperor must die and she has to figure out how to do it. Nobody knows how to end an immortal and it is up to her to learn how it can be done.
What does she do? How far will she push to see this through? Can she be the one to kill those she set out to? Nothing and no one is what they seem.
SPICY CONTENT (Scale X-XXX): The spice in this book is a chef’s kiss after all that forbidden tension and yearning! So well written and so fun to read! Chapter 31: X Chapter 34: X Chapter 42: XXX Chapter 43: XXX
NOTE: Not all is revealed in this book. There are several questions I still have about a few things (like the magic, Caiden, Brevan & Brevan’s sister, and Lee) that I’m sure will get answered in future books. I love that it’s so intriguing and mysterious!!
THANKS: Thank you to Author Alexis Calder for this amazing ebook! I loved reading it, look forward to the next book in this series and look forward to reading your future books! Thank you!
Thanks to MTMC Tours for providing the eARC. This is my honest opinion.
Trapped Between Power and Desire
In the fantasy novel ‘Silk & Iron,’ Taylan is forced to play a role that could cost her life. Within the walls of the palace of Iskavaland, she assumes the identity of the murdered princess, while no one must suspect who she truly is. Driven by revenge, she risks everything to bring down the emperor and his heir. But the longer she maintains her role, the clearer it becomes that secrets are piling up and trust is a luxury she cannot afford. This first installment marks the beginning of a series that is intense and difficult to put down.
Alexis Calder’s writing style is smooth and flowing. She makes frequent use of short sentences and dialogues that feel natural and true to life. Calder pays careful attention to the development of her characters. Taylan evolves convincingly in her role as princess, but also as a young woman forced to stand her ground in a world dominated by power and suspicion. Her motivation for revenge adds extra emotional depth and makes her inner struggle palpable.
The story is told entirely from Taylan’s perspective. This provides a strong focus on her thoughts and doubts, though a brief perspective from Brevan could have added even more depth to the dynamic. At the same time, this choice intensifies the story, as the reader knows no more than Taylan herself and shares her sense of uncertainty.
Most of the story unfolds within the walls of a single palace. This confined setting amplifies the psychological tension. Intrigue, political maneuvering, and hidden agendas make every interaction feel charged. The tension between the main characters is well developed, fueled by distrust, power struggles, and suppressed emotions. The enemies-to-lovers dynamic is layered and believable, gradually building throughout the story.
‘Silk & Iron’ closes the circle of mystery and danger seamlessly. The palace remains a nest of secrets, the intrigues are far from resolved, and Taylan’s choices are only the beginning of a dangerous game. Dark, intense, and captivating, this is a story that grips the reader and constantly leaves them questioning whom they can trust.

I had the privilege to ARC read this, and I am so glad that I did! It was my first time reading anything by Alexis, but I’ve been wanting to forever.
Taylan is a peasant who has lost her entire family due to the Pendralian rule, and she is tasked with posing as the Iskavalian princess (Sabina) betrothed to the Pendralian Prince in order to get information on how to kill the royal family. In actuality, Sabina killed herself prior to being captured by the rebellion on the road to Pendralia.
What ensues is a complex game of “who can we trust” and “who am I, really” as Taylan/Sabina lives this double life behind the walls of the Pendralian castle. She runs into many challenges that test her allegiance and her ability to keep her cover lest she be taken to the dungeons (you’ll learn why she REALLY doesn’t want that while reading). She also may or may not be unequivocally drawn to the King’s enforcer, Brevan, who she has been told is the person responsible for killing her brothers. Their relationship is full of banter and a SLOOOOW BURN that had me wrapped around its finger.
Overall, I had a great time reading this romantasy. I am excited to continue the series and learn the depth of each character’s magical powers and to see what happens w my mans Brevan.
I absolutely loved Alexis Calder’s Blood & Salt series, so the moment I saw the ARC application for Silk & Iron, I signed up immediately! And wow, this book did not disappoint.
What did I just read?! From the very first pages, the story throws you straight into chaos with a crazy twist that immediately lets you know you are going to be on the edge of your seat the whole time. The court intrigue and magic system are unique, dark, and dangerous✨️☠️👑. Add in a delicious touch her and die broody enforcer with slow burn forbidden romance🔥, and I was completely hooked.
The hidden identities and betrayals had me questioning everyone. Truly, trust NO ONE. I never felt settled the entire book, and I loved that. The character arcs were done so well that every reveal and shift in loyalty had my mind reeling. The ending was completely feral, I didn't expect any of that🤯!
If you like dark romantasy with morally gray characters everywhere, gods meddling where they shouldn’t, and a romance that burns so slow under layers of danger and deception, add Silk & Iron to your TBR immediately!
THANK YOU Alexis Calder for this ARC! I am so excited to start this series with you and cannot wait for the next installment!!
If you’re looking for: - Female Spy - Plot twist from the beginning - High Stakes - Touch her & d!e - Slow burn - Powers bestowed by gods - Forbidden Romance - Betrayal and Deception
Then This. Is. The. Book.
Our FMC Sabina has vengeance in her blood and the stakes are high as she takes on her role to fulfill her vengeance. I immediately loved her character from the beginning until about the middle where her decisions made me mad lol but she redeemed herself and man I CANNOT wait for the rest of this series!
Our MMC, the enforcer. Dark, grumpy brooding. We all love him. The tension between them was just chefs kiss.
Thank you to the author, Alexis Calder and her team for allowing me to be part of her Advance Readers! These are my own opinions and thought on the book! I loved every minute of it and I literally made myself slow down to continue enjoying this world!
Silk & Iron grabs you right away from the prologue and Alexis Calder does a great job pulling you in and holding your atttention from there. I was intrigued to know more and right out of the gate by the end of the first chapter a major secret is revealed that ups the stakes for our FMC Sabina and makes the story quite exciting. I knew going in that there were two MMCs. Prince Caiden to whom Sabina is betrothed and the broody enforcer/Sabina’s guard Breven. Caiden is cruel and Breven is a burn it all down for her type. Though even by the end of the book I’m not completely sure about Caiden’s true intentions. Once so many secrets are revealed by the end I’m interested to see how the second book plays out. I was a little disappointed by how runshed the ending felt especially since it took so long to get the there. It was like this whole story happened and then a tornado of an ending. Regardless I liked it as a whole and I look forward to continuing the series.
A free copy of this book was provided by the author. My review is voluntary and all opinions are my own.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 🌶️🌶️ Morally Grey Men Court Politics Magic Granted by Gods Female Spy
Slow Burn Romantasy done right!!!
The Enforcer, *chefs kiss*
Taylan, Strong FMC - Her character development was great to read. She was pushed to her limits and still came out standing, exactly what you want from a FMC 👏🏽
Caiden, walking red flag 🚩🚩🚩
The World Building in this book is political and detailed, I enjoyed the writing in this book. Alexis writes extremely well and this book was a pleasure to read.
This book does end on a cliffhanger, you’ve been warned - You’ll be desperate to read book 2!!!
Thank you to Alexis for sending me an advance copy to review! ❤️
OMG I’m obsessed! I read this all in one sitting and that ending?! I need the next book like now! How have I never read this author before? I definitely need to read her back list. I’m so attached to these characters and this world. I desperately need to know what’s gonna happen next. What an incredible story.
I enjoyed reading an eARC of this book! This slow burn romantasy has quite a bit going on. She’s a spy betrothed to a prince, but falls for the guy guarding her. The magic system is unique from other fantasy books I’ve read and there is the potential to explore more in detail in future books. I’m looking forward to rereading this after the plot twist at the end to see clues written earlier in the book. I enjoyed this book quite a bit and cannot wait for the next book to be announced!
ARC Review — thank you to Alexis Calder for the advance copy. No major spoilers, just premise + vibes.
Rating:4 stars (solid)
Okay besties, this is a slow burn romantasy that understands the assignment: court pressure, a political marriage, and a heroine who shows up wearing a lie like armor. It’s not the kind of book that kidnaps your entire personality on page 12, but it is the kind that pays off if you’re in the mood for a simmer instead of an explosion. Think: elegant tension, sharp edges, and the gradual unraveling of “I’m fine” into “I might commit treason for this man” (emotionally, spiritually, etc.).
The premise is immediately delicious. Taylan steps into the palace under someone else’s name because the real princess is dead, and from the jump you can tell she’s not here to be sweet or accommodating. She’s here to survive, to play the long game, and to aim herself like a weapon. The vibe is set early with the kind of line that tells you she’s not a sunshine protagonist pretending she’s okay.
“I have seen Death. And she is beautiful.”
And honestly? The FMC is why this gets 4 stars from me. Taylan is capable without feeling like a cardboard “badass” checklist, and her decisions read like survival instead of plot convenience. She’s observant, she’s strategic, and she has that lethal little bite I want in a heroine navigating a palace full of people who would happily eat her alive.
Now, the prince. Caiden is immediate red flag behavior. Not “morally gray book boyfriend.” Not “misunderstood.” More like “sir, please stop speaking forever.” What makes it fun is that Taylan doesn’t treat his nonsense like romance. She meets control with contempt, and the banter made me laugh out loud because she’s not impressed by his crown, his ego, or his audacity.
“Enjoy your man carriage.”
But let’s be real: the book starts acting right when the enforcer enters the chat. Brevan Maxwell brings that controlled-danger energy where every scene feels like a test you might fail on purpose. The tension is slow, tense, and honestly kind of delicious because it’s built on mistrust, proximity, and the awful moment when your body starts betraying your brain. Taylan’s internal commentary is peak “girl… stand up,” but also… I get it.
“And you aren’t supposed to feel flutters in your chest for your enemy.”
This romance is a true slow burn, so if you want immediate spice and constant fireworks, this is not that. This is simmering looks, tightening tension, and the slow corrosion of certainty. It’s the kind of pacing that works best when you’re craving build-up and emotional friction, not when you want the book to punch you in the face with chemistry every chapter.
Worldbuilding-wise, I wasn’t fully swallowed yet, but I can feel the potential. The court setting is polished, the danger is present, and there are hints of something deeper in the mythology/magic threads that make me think the series could expand and get more immersive as it goes. Soundtrack-wise, this didn’t scream “playlist required” to me, but it absolutely inspires a vibe playlist if you want to heighten the mood while you read.
Bottom line: if you want a polished court trap, a sharp FMC, a slow burn that actually takes its time, and an enforcer dynamic that brings the tension, this is a great add to your library. I’m not calling it an instant-obsession read for me, but I am calling it solid, satisfying, and absolutely worth picking up when you’re in the mood for this genre.
Silk and Iron is a slow burn fantasy full of tension, political intrigue, and magic given by the gods. From the very first chapter, Alexis Calder draws you into a dangerous world where every decision matters and even small mistakes can have deadly consequences. The story quickly makes it clear that nothing is simple, and survival depends on knowing when to act, when to lie, and who to trust.
Taylan, the FMC is disguised as Princess Sabina who is betrothed to a foreign prince for political gain. She willingly steps into a role that is as risky as it is powerful. Her every word and action is a calculated risk, and Calder masterfully keeps the reader questioning Taylan’s true motives. Is she acting out of duty, survival, ambition, or something far more personal? The brilliance in the writing of this novel lies in how long those answers are withheld, allowing tension to build chapter to chapter.
The political world building of Silk and Iron is rich and powerful. Alliances seem to be unstable, loyalties are conditional, and every conversation feels like a battle where one misstep could end in disaster. Calder excels at showing how power operates with each character, where promises are contingent on what is in it for others, and even good intentions can trigger life ending consequences. The stakes seem to always be high. You understand exactly what Taylan stands to lose, and that makes every gamble having you at the edge of your seat as you read each page.
This is an enemy to lovers, forced proximity romance full of suspicion, tension that leaves you wondering if there can ever be a resolution to the layers of conflict. Taylan’s assigned protector adds another level of danger and intrigue. He is sworn to protect her, but the question lingers constantly: protect her from what or whom? External enemies, political rivals, or the very truths she is hiding? Their relationship is full of unspoken feelings, intriguing exchanges, and moments of vulnerability that leave them victims to their inner feelings. It is very much a “touch her and die” energy but layered with uncertainty and emotional restraint that makes the slow burn deeply satisfying.
One of the novel’s greatest strengths is its pacing. Each chapter ends on a note of suspense, revelation, or quiet dread that makes it almost impossible to put the book down. The twists encountered throughout are thought provoking. Calder trusts the reader to connect the dots, and the payoff is a story that constantly keeps you guessing.
Be warned that Silk and Iron ends on a cliffhanger. It will leave you eager for book two as you finish the final page.
This novel will have you asking yourself, who can you truly afford to trust when every lie is necessary, every alliance is dangerous, and the future of your people depends on your actions?
If you love fantasy worlds filled with dangerous politics, slow-burn romance, high-stakes intrigue, and characters forced to make impossible choices, then Silk and Iron truly deserves a spot at the top of your TBR. With its release on January 20th, this is one book you will want to grab.
Thanks to the author, Alexis Calder, for giving me the opportunity to read the eARC of this book. I can't wait to see what happens with Taylan in book two.
I devoured this book. From the beginning the story pulled me in. There was intrigue and danger, yearning and spice. I love the characters. There’s an element of mystery and not knowing who to trust. Our FMC is pushed into an impossible situation by those she thinks she can trust. But who are the real villains? Who can she trust when things aren’t as they seem? Those are the questions she faces as she navigates being a spy, alone and unsupported, while also falling for someone she shouldn’t. The book was well paced and the cliff hanger ending had me wanting to throw my kindle across the room. It made me laugh, cry, and yell. I can’t ask more from a book than that. I rate this book 5 stars because of how I felt reading it and how much I enjoyed it, despite that cliffhanger. I need book 2 now.
Thank you, Alexis Calder for allowing me to be an ARC reader.

Silk & Iron is a slow burn, spicy enemies-to-lovers romantasy full of court intrigue, betrayal, and deception. Mind the cliff.
Silk & Iron had me from page one. It’s a slow burn, spicy enemies to lovers with all the court intrigue, betrayal and deception one would want in a Romantasy. The descriptive writing had me glued to the pages and had to force myself to put down the book for bed. Our fmc isn’t who everyone thinks she is and she plays the role well because if she fails she may just be fed to a dragon. Sabina(Taylan) is full of sass and demands respect from those around her. As the story progresses her plans change when she falls for the one and only enforcer who just so happens is not her soon to be husband. She may have been set up and betrayed but she rises above it all like the warrior she truly is. The banter between Taylan and Brevan is the best and they slowly fall in love. When the slow burn turns to spice I ate it all up. Brevan aka enforcer is tasked with keeping her safe and training her which as readers you can see where this may end up. When he says “And if any of you touch her again, I will rip your hearts from your chest” I immediately fell in love with that man. He is a true man that truly cares for Taylan(Sabina) despite his troubled past. The prince(emperor to be) gave me the yuck from the beginning he is truly a spoiled prince that has others do everything for him. He wants to led his land and become emperor and is willing to do whatever it takes to do so. Even if it means marrying Sabina out of spite after truth comes out. I may have called him a few nasty names throughout the book. I love world building and the magical aspect in this book is amazing. Getting magic from the Gods and relics complete with unique marks. The betrayals and deceptions caught me off guard and didn’t see them coming. You think you have a character all figured out and then bam the truth comes out. The way the author writes truly makes the world come alive and sucks you in right with the characters. Absolutely stunning piece of work by the author and am so pleased to have been blessed with an arc. I could write more but alas trying hard for no spoilers. Do you self a favor and read this. It will have your heart crushed and leave you speechless in the best way.

❤️ World Building: The world building in this book was just fantastic! It was intricate in almost every scene, giving the reader the feel of not only the place, but how the characters interact with it. You have two completely different worlds in this book, that of the royals and that of the rebels, and each is so well done!
❤️ The Characters: I loved the characters, Sabina (aka Taylan) was an incredible MFC, she was clever and strong, not backing down from a challenge. Brevan, the enforcer, was a deeply layered character with his own demons to fight. We don’t know much about his past as of yet. Caiden, the prince, is still very much a mystery to me. We don’t see him much in this book, but he is intriguing. Most say he’s more evil than his father, but “cold” doesn't always equate to evil. I look forward to getting to know him, and his inner thoughts in the coming books.
❤️ The Story: The story was phenomenal! You have twists and turns, mysteries, betrayal, female rage, and all the good things that make a story great. This book ends on a great cliffhanger as well!
❤️🔥Overall: I really enjoyed reading this book, you can pre-order it now, and you totally should!!!!
Death Goddesses lore Inspired by Mara: Death goddesses were as varied as the cultures who worshipped them. They played different roles, such as overseer of the Underworld, protector of mummies, and determiner of fate. While some were more benevolent than others, they all had one thing in common: They were associated with the end of life and the mysteries that come along with it. (allthatsinteresting.com)
I was gifted this book free for my honest opinion, you know the drill 😉
What lengths would you go to for the sake of avenging your family? And what happens when the foundation of that revenge begins to unravel?
I am still reeling. I went into Silk & Iron with high expectations because it’s Alexis Calder, but I wasn't prepared for how hard this would hit. From the moment I got the ARC acceptance, I knew I was in for a ride, what I didn’t expect was to be swept away from page one.
This book is a masterclass in tension. It’s got everything I crave in a romantasy: a brutal "enemies to lovers" arc, a slow burn that had me screaming, and the deep, emotional resonance of found family and characters navigating real trauma. I hate talking about the actual plot in reviews because I never want to spoil the experience, but just know that the characters are beautifully created. Each one feels distinct and deeply human. While the world-building is solid, it’s the character development that steals the show.
I do have to forewarn you about the final chapter. Chapter 44 is a total game-changer. Not only does it deliver a heartbreaking, pulse-pounding cliffhanger, but the way the source of the title is revealed in those final pages? Chef’s kiss. It tied everything together in a way I never saw coming.
If you love mystery, betrayal, dark romance and a hint of magic, pre-order this immediately (Releasing on Jan 20, 2026). Just be prepared to "adult" less because you won't be able to put it down.
Note: Check trigger warnings for violence, insinuated suicide, assault and off-page SA.
+++I have received this eARC in an exchange for an honest review+++
I want to thank @authorslexiscalder for allowing me to read this amazing eARC. I truly feel honored to have had the privilege to read and review it.
First want to say thank you to Alexis Calder for this ARC read! All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This book! I loved every minute of it! I didn't know what I was getting into when I got this book but I was excited for it! I am so glad that I read it and enjoyed every minute of it!!
After loosing her family and almost everything in the rebellion, Taylan is asked to go undercover as the prince's betrothed. she is determined to destroy the entire family to get revenge for hers. As all the secrets and lies unraval at her feet Taylan's world gets complicated when she starts to fall for one of the men who destroyed everything. As the secrets and lies turned to betrayals from those who Taylan thought were in her corner, she must choose between burning the empire or saving those she has come to care about.
This book was the perfect fast romantasy with a wild/cliffhanger ending. I wasn't expecting that ending. One minute I am deep in what is happening and the next minute the world has ended.(Aka I ran out of words) To say that I was not expecting a cliffhanger ending is an understatement but I can't say that I hated it. It just made me want more and I usually always want more of a book I really enjoy!
All I know is that I cannot wait for the next book to come out and cannot wait to see where this story will take us! The world building was good and strong and all the characters were believable. I really recommend this book!!! Silk & Iron. Alexis Calder
Silk & Iron is a new romantasy, involving the gods, magic, a rebellion and a few different worlds. It ends on a cliffhanger, leaving us in limbo, my brain constantly repeating the same thing.. I need to know what happens next. There was a surprise twist which although I could see part of it coming, I couldn't see the entire thing, and it was done in a way I hadn't anticipated. Literally within the last 2% of the book I went from being the happiest I had ever been in this book, to the most anxious and terrified before instantly having what felt like my soul crushed.
For most of the book I was constantly eager to find out which of the three men she was going to get with, just when you think you've figured it out a new one is introduced, or another one does something sweet, throwing a spanner in the works. It drove me crazy and I absolutely did not scream at my kindle "who is it!?" a few times.
Taylan or "Sabina" is out for revenge for the murder of her family. She a strong fmc but not in the usual way as she's not necessarily a fighter. Her strengths lie in her mind, she's smart and cunning and able to think on her feet, and sure she gets a fair amount of luck in certain situations. Desperate for change, she agrees to pose as a foreign Princess. Surrounded by enemies and strangers, she has no idea who she can trust. She's isolated and alone but she powers through it, her determination seeing her through.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book, though for me there did need to be a little more action in the first half, of Taylan doing something, and maybe a little more world-building to make it a 5 star, it's most definitely a solid 4 star for me. I cannot wait for the next book to come out and see how the story progresses.
❤️🔥 Enemies to Lovers 💍 Marriage Alliance 🤫 Secret Identity 💖 Forbidden Romance 💫 Magic 🐉 Dragons 🏛️ Old Gods ⚔️ Warring Kingdoms 👑 Political Intrigue 👀 Spies & Assassins 🔺 Love Triangle-ish 📣 Witty Banter
I devoured this book in two days — mostly because I’m on a tight schedule BUT also because I did really enjoy reading it 😂 I kept wanting to pick it up and wanting to know what happens next. It was a pretty easy read, too. I knocked off a star because I wish it was a littleeee more elaborate but the plot and intrigue makes up for it. I also usually don’t like love triangles and this isn’t fully one as I think there is a clear MMC lead, but somehow I’m still oddly drawn to the other MMC. Maybe I have a thing for toxic morally grey characters 🙈 And then that ending cliffhanger, whoooosaaa can’t wait to find out what happens next. Anyways if you like secret identity, political intrigue, and forbidden romance this will be for you.
"She came here wanting them all dead. The emperor. The prince. The enforcer.
But loyalties don’t stay clean at court. Every truth she uncovers shifts the rebellion’s plans, and every secret changes how she sees the men she was sent to destroy. She’s learning things she was never meant to know, and they’re pulling her in opposite directions.”
“Silk & Iron” is the first book in a yet to be named romantasy trilogy and comes out TODAY, January 20th!
Rated M for Spice and Violence 🌶️🌶️
Thank you to Alexis Calder for the ARC opportunity! 🫶✨
Currently reading Silk & Iron and I am officially unwell in the best way. From page one, this book sinks its claws in and refuses to let go. The writing is sharp, immersive, and dangerously easy to fall into, the kind where you “accidentally” read way past your bedtime.
Even partway through, the atmosphere feels rich and intentional, and the characters already have their hooks in me. I’m savoring it, but also feral to see where this story goes. If it keeps this pace, I already know I’m going to be thinking about it long after the last page.
(Still reading, but fully obsessed.)
UPDATE:
ALEXIS. How very dare you. That ending has emotionally incapacitated me. I am not okay, I will not be okay, and I fear I may never recover. I closed the book and just sat there staring into the void because WHAT DO YOU MEAN THAT’S WHERE IT ENDS?!
And the plot twist??? I genuinely feel betrayed in the best and worst way possible. Everything I thought I knew? A lie. Every theory I had? Obliterated. My brain is running a thousand miles a minute trying to connect dots that may or may not exist while my heart is in absolute shambles.
This book didn’t just end, it grabbed me by the throat, whispered “trust me,” and then shoved me off a cliff. I am unwell. I am feral. I am desperately awaiting answers because if this is how it’s going to be, I fear this series will actually ruin my life (said with love).
Five stars for the emotional damage. No notes. Just… WHEN IS THE NEXT ONE.
Dark romantasy that delivers on perfect slow burn tension, court intrigue, and morally gray desire.
This story thrives on deception. Princess Sabina Volkov is sent to Pendralia for a political marriage, but nothing about her mission or the court she enters is as it seems. Secrets stack on secrets, alliances blur, and every interaction feels layered with hidden intent. The pacing is deliberate, allowing the tension to build naturally before rewarding the reader with well earned emotional and romantic payoffs.
The romance is a true slow burn, leaning heavily into forbidden attraction and moral conflict. Prince Caiden is wicked, powerful, and unsettling in the best way, while Brevan adds emotional complexity with his quiet intensity and violent past. The dynamic between the characters keeps the reader guessing, especially as loyalties and motives begin to fracture.
The spice is thoughtfully placed and enhances the story rather than overpowering it, hitting hardest after long stretches of yearning and restraint. The magic system remains intentionally mysterious, and the immortal emperor looms as a terrifying, oppressive force throughout the book.
Silk & Iron ends on a sharp cliffhanger that leaves major questions unanswered, setting the stage for an even better potential continuation. This is a must read for fans of dark romantasy who enjoy intrigue, deception, and romance that burns slow and dangerous.
I received this eARC free from the author/downloaded through the BookFunnel website. Thank you to Alexis Calder! My opinions are my own and voluntarily given.
I was impressed by this book. it definitely kept my attention and left me wanting more.
We have "Sabina", possing as the princess betrothed to Prince Caiden, sent in by her ex-boyfriend for the rebellion because the real princess k!lled herself when captured by the rebellion. The emperor is immortal and she's meant to find out how to take him and the prince out. She has a personal vendetta after the empire k!lled her entire family. Prince Caiden is mostly the typical entitled man in a place of power and the empire is very much a "women are just meant to look pretty" kind of place. Sabina pushes his buttons because she's not very good at just shutting up, but the prince seems to enjoy it to an extent. Then, there's Brevan, the emperor's enforcer, and the person that guards Sabina the most. She was always told that he was the one to k!ll her brothers. The castle is a dangerous place with rebellion attacks occurring and Sabina doesn't know who she can trust, but she feels safe with Brevan. The soldiers of the empire are given magic, if found worthy, at the temple. The former empress was the only known woman to enter, and nkw Sabina is also expected to enter, but she'll do everything she can to finish her mission before that day comes.
The characters were fantastic, the pacing was good, and I was intrigued the entire time. The twists were excellent and not all of them were expected. I'll be impatiently waiting for the 2nd book.
If you love a story with a true slow burn, enemies to lovers, touch her and die with a mix of magic, spies, and court politics, this book is for you!
This story had me sucked in from the first couple of pages. I read this book in a day. Once I started, I could not stop!
The FMC poses as a princess and enters into an arranged marriage with a prince to get her revenge. She is apart of the rebel forces who are trying to take down the corrupt emperor. Also, this force is led by her Ex which brings its own challenges. She's got a strong personality and isn't afraid to say what she thinks. Along with a big heart that wants to protect those she cares about, no matter the cost.
Don't even get me started on the MMC's! Brevan, the king's enforcer and our FMC's personal guard/trainer. That man is perfect, and you can't tell me otherwise. I mean, touch her, and I'll break your nose?! I loved his character and fierce protectiveness, and loyalty. Caiden had me intrigued from the start. A ruthless prince who only softens for his bride-to-be and has a definite dark side.
Alexis Calder did such an incredible job building this world and characters. And the spice was done so well. The tension was there and the build up was perfection!
The ending had me literally screaming! The plot twist?! I cannot wait for the next book to come out. I am so anxious to know what happens next!
Add it to your TBR immediately and be ready to stay up until 2 AM reading it!
Thank you so much for allowing me to be an ARC reader on this book. It was a phenomenal read.
I love everything Alexis Calder writes, and this latest story is another winner! From the very first page, I was totally hooked. I couldn’t tear myself away. Sabina (aka Taylan) makes an awesome FMC, suddenly thrown into the role of spy for a rebellion she’d already left behind. She’s interesting, relatable, and watching her grow throughout the story was a blast.
I knew I would be all about Brevan from the start, but I even found myself liking Caiden as the story went on. Yes, he’s the bad guy, but after he used his terrifying powers against Sabina, he did show moments of actually caring for her. But still, my heart belongs to Brevan! The slow-burn spark between him and Sabina was absolutely sizzling. I loved every moment of their chemistry building up, especially as they continued to fight their obvious attraction and feelings for each other.
The world in this book is so immersive I could practically see every detail, and the pacing kept things exciting. Sabina’s ladies became the found family she never knew she needed, and their friendship moments were very real and sweet. Her bond with Antonia tugged at my heartstrings, and Brevan’s fierce protectiveness is absolutely swoon-worthy.
But that ending?! Alexis, you’re killing me here. How am I supposed to survive the wait for book two?
Silk and Iron tells the story of a woman sent to court to lie, spy, and survive while posing as a prince’s betrothed—all while trying to learn how to kill an immortal emperor and dismantle the empire that created him.
This magic system is completely different from anything I’ve ever read, which gave me such a boost to want to know more!
We have a Prince, Caiden, who is basically a walking red flag (and not in the way we usually like!).
Taylon, who is posing as Princess Sabina, couldn't care less about who Caiden is or what he’s capable of!
I loved the banter between the two of them! I caught myself laughing at things she says and does to him, thinking, "yep, she’s going to die" 😂.
AND THEN we have an "enforcer".... and what an enforcer... Brevan was assigned to shadow and protect the princess.... and he shadowed her very well 😏. His personality and control-freak tendencies are absolutely wonderful! The perfect translation for "touch her and you d*e."
The slow burnnnn.... my Gods!!! The conversations between them are so natural, the tension is thick enough to cut with a knife!!! — facepalm every other page. 180-degree plot twists like I haven’t seen in ages!
The last 100 pages were... HHHAAAAAAAA (I dropped my Kobo... yes... that actually happened) Because that ending!!! I swear I wasn't expecting it!
Oh my! SIX STARS! @alexiscalderauthor what did I just read!?! My jaw is on the floor and I am absolutely stunned. This is my favorite book I will read in 2026…and yes, I know it’s early but this slow-burn, enemies to lovers romantasy is that INSANELY good!
I knew it was going to be good from the very first chapter. But I had no idea what was yet to come. Nothing is what it seems. For fear of giving any spoilers, read the blurb below for more details about the storyline.
Silk & Iron by Alexis Calder publishes on JAN 20th! RUN to get your copy right now!!!
Thank you @alexiscalderauthor for my gifted ARC in exchange for my honest review. Seriously, when is book 2? I’m already eagerly awaiting!
Blurb: “The emperor. The prince. The enforcer. I want them all dead. Until I fall for one of them. After losing her entire family to the rebellion, hope isn’t an option - only revenge. When she’s asked to pose as the prince’s betrothed, she agrees for one reason: access.
She enters the palace to learn how to kill an immortal emperor.
But the closer she gets to the truth, the more dangerous the game becomes - and the more complicated her enemies are.
Nothing is as it seems.
And once she realizes she still has something left to lose, she has to decide just how far she’s willing to go to watch an empire burn.”
