The year is 1901 and the hustle and bustle of the holidays is descending on New York’s Fifth Avenue. For the first time in her privileged life, Adelaide Forsythe won’t be swept up in it. She couldn’t be happier about the prospect of a quieter Christmas. That’s not to say her transition from Miss to Mrs. has been without challenge. Though she doesn’t regret marrying for love instead of wealth, she can barely light the hearth or cook more than burnt toast. She feels woefully unprepared to run her own household. Then, on the first Sunday of Advent, winter winds bring change through two unlikely a young orphan boy, hiding near Adelaide’s front steps, and a seasoned housekeeper who seems too good to be true. The boy, Jack, claims he isn’t an orphan at all and is desperate to reunite his family. Adelaide and her husband Howard work tirelessly to solve the riddle of Jack’s story, while Adelaide’s new endeavors open her eyes to a world beyond her past experience—and all the challenge and possibility it holds. As Christmas approaches, small glimmers of wonder light the way toward the answers Adaleide seeks and the most miraculous gift of all.
For many years, Lynn Austin nurtured a desire to write but frequent travels and the demands of her growing family postponed her career. When her husband's work took Lynn to Bogota, Colombia, for two years, she used the B.A. she'd earned at Southern Connecticut State University to become a teacher. After returning to the U.S., the Austins moved to Anderson, Indiana, Thunder Bay, Ontario, and later to Winnipeg, Manitoba.
It was during the long Canadian winters at home with her children that Lynn made progress on her dream to write, carving out a few hours of writing time each day while her children napped. Lynn credits her early experience of learning to write amid the chaos of family life for her ability to be a productive writer while making sure her family remains her top priority.
Extended family is also very important to Austin, and it was a lively discussion between Lynn, her mother, grandmother (age 98), and daughter concerning the change in women's roles through the generations that sparked the inspiration for her novel Eve's Daughters.
Along with reading, two of Lynn's lifelong passions are history and archaeology. While researching her Biblical fiction series, Chronicles of the Kings, these two interests led her to pursue graduate studies in Biblical Backgrounds and Archaeology through Southwestern Theological Seminary. She and her son traveled to Israel during the summer of 1989 to take part in an archaeological dig at the ancient city of Timnah. This experience contributed to the inspiration for her novel Wings of Refuge.
Lynn resigned from teaching to write full-time in 1992. Since then she has published 27 novels. Eight of her historical novels, Hidden Places, Candle in the Darkness, Fire by Night, A Proper Pursuit, and Until We Reach Home have won Christy Awards in 2002, 2003, 2004, 2008, and 2009 for excellence in Christian Fiction. Fire by Night was also one of only five inspirational fiction books chosen by Library Journal for their top picks of 2003, and All She Ever Wanted was chosen as one of the five inspirational top picks of 2005. Lynn's novel Hidden Places has been made into a movie for the Hallmark Channel, starring actress Shirley Jones. Ms Jones received a 2006 Emmy Award nomination for her portrayal of Aunt Batty in the film.
Overflows with the hope, love, joy, and peace of Christmas. 🎁 🎄
Here are five things I loved about this inspiring holiday read:
⛪ The book is set during Advent with a section for each of the weekly candles.
📚 We return to the world of Adelaide and Howard from All My Secrets. The two are newlyweds and working through the differences in their upbringings. They bring Ephesians 5:25-33 to life.
🚸 James (8) and his sister Polly (3) are about the same age as my grands. We were just visiting them so it was easy for me to picture these two little waifs without a home. You will need your tissues!
🎄 This may sound like an overused cliche, but Lynn Austin has given us a holiday read that truly points us to the meaning of Christmas -- the reason for the season!
😍 And how about that gorgeous cover! Today is Publication Day. Wouldn't this be perfect for someone on your Christmas list?
And where can I get my very own Mrs. Gleason?
A big thank you to Tyndale House and NetGalley for a DRC in exchange for an honest review.
Waiting for Christmas by Lynn Austin 4 Stars A great companion story to All My Secrets by Lynn Austin
“Maybe that’s all God asks of us. Some people are given the opportunity to do grand things in life, but if we just make a difference in the lives of the people God puts in our paths, I think He’s pleased with that.”
What a sweet Christmas story set in 1901 during the Gilded Age. All My Secrets was a favorite of the year for me this year and we follow Adelaide and Howard from that story. We see them as newlyweds together and they find Jack, a young boy who is missing from his family and says he is not an orphan. We see the journey of Addy and Howard trying to do the right thing and help this young boy and reunite him with his sister and family. Finding this young boy on her doorstep changes their lives completely.
This novella was filled with the spirit of Christmas. Addy and Howard working together as a newly married couple on something very serious really brings them together in showing their support for one another. We see some details surrounding women's suffrage and her husband's support for her efforts. Howard really is a hero for Addy who really supports his wife in everything she wants to do.
If you're looking for a novella that really captures the true meaning of Christmas this holiday season, check this one out. It's definitely going to tug at your heart strings and Lynn Austin never disappoints in her storytelling!
Thank you to Tyndale House Publishers for providing a copy to honestly read and review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
“My faith shouldn’t depend on whether or not God answers my prayers exactly the way I want Him to.”
It was so wonderful catching up with Addy since we last met her in Lynn Austin's ‘All My Secrets’.
Adelaide and Howard Forsythe remind us about the true meaning of Christmas - loving our neighbour, spreading God's love to others and bringing the lost ones home.
Jack and Polly Thomas are brought into the Forsythe’s lives quite unexpectedly and show this newly married couple the value of prayer, a father's love and serving others. Austin ties together what it means to be a servant and invest in others with the 4 themes of Advent; hope, love, joy and peace.
“We find peace in the assurance that in all life's changes, we can trust in an unchanging God.”
I love how despite Addy’s drive to support the suffrage movement and embrace change, she continues to trust, and encourages others to trust in, an unchanging God.
I was gifted this copy by Tyndale House Publishers and NetGalley and was under no obligation to provide a review.
Adelaide Forsythe is newly married and looking forward to spending her first Christmas with her husband. One cold November afternoon as she is returning from a meeting, she finds a young boy huddled in the bushes by her home.
Jack has run away from an orphanage but claims that he is not an orphan and that he is looking for his sister. Adelaide and her husband take Jack in and try to determine the facts behind his story. This chance encounter changes Adelaide’s life.
Waiting for Christmas is an inspirational story about faith, hope, love of family, and the true meaning of Christmas.
What it's about: Set in the gilded age, Adelaide is a newly married heiress who befriends an 8-year-old boy who has run away from an orphanage. He claims that he is not an orphan but he can't get anyone to believe him: his mother has died, his 3 year old sister is missing and his father is at sea but promised to return for Christmas.
What I thought: I wish I could have connected more with this, because it had lovely elements that make for an excellent Christmas story. It didn't help that it was an audiobook and at this time of year, it's easy for my mind to wander off.
Waiting for Christmas by Lynn Austin is a heartwarming novella that wraps the true meaning of Christmas in a story filled with hope, faith, and love. Set against the backdrop of New York's Fifth Avenue in 1901, this Gilded Age tale draws us into a world where the hustle and bustle of holiday preparations intertwine with the deeper yearning for family and belonging.
Jack, a young boy who insists he's not an orphan, arrives on Adelaide’s doorstep, bringing a flurry of emotions and hope with him. His determination to reunite with his family echoes the relentless love of our Heavenly Father for His children. As Adelaide and her husband, Howard, unravel the mystery of Jack’s story, they also discover a greater truth—one that highlights God’s sovereignty, the power of prayer, and the true essence of family, whether by blood or by heart.
What shines brightest in this novella is the portrayal of faith. Lynn Austin gently weaves the characters' trust in God into every decision they make. Adelaide’s compassion, Howard’s steadfastness, and Jack’s pure and consistent faith in God and His power come from a place of deep belief, reminding us of the simple, child-like faith that Jesus speaks of in Matthew 18:3-5.
The theme of reunion resonates deeply throughout the story, reflecting the spiritual truth that God pursues us with relentless love, just as Jack searches for his sister and waits for his dad’s arrival. It's a reminder that we are never lost to Him, no matter how far we may wander.
As the Christmas season unfolds within the pages, the novella beautifully explores themes of sacrifice and generosity. It’s not just a historical tale but a tender reminder of the true spirit of Christmas—of giving, serving, and trusting in God’s provision, much like Jesus did when He came to earth for us.
One of the most touching moments is when Adelaide reflects, “Maybe that’s all God asks of us. Some people are given the opportunity to do grand things in life, but if we just make a difference in the lives of the people God puts in our paths, I think He’s pleased with that.” This simple truth captures the heart of the story—serving where God places us and trusting Him with the rest.
From the candle-lit warmth of Adelaide’s home to the snow-covered streets of New York, Waiting for Christmas fills the soul with the light of Christ and the promise of hope. It’s a story that gently reminds us that no matter how cold or dark the world may seem, the light of Jesus shines brightly, guiding us home. If you're looking for a novella that captures the joy, wonder, and true meaning of Christmas, this one is a treasure waiting to be unwrapped.
I received a digital ARC of Waiting for Christmas from the publisher and NetGalley. I am not required to write a positive review in any way or for any reason. My honest and unbiased opinions expressed in this book review are my own. My review focuses on the writing style, the pacing, and the story’s content, ensuring transparency and reliability.
A sweet novella connected to characters from All My Secrets. Particularly enjoyed that the novella is broken into four sections based upon the four weeks of Advent (Hope, Love, Joy & Peace). Starting a marriage and orphans are two of the topics in the novella.
"if we just make a difference in the lives of the people God puts in our paths, I think He's pleased with that."
This is an absolutely charming Christmas story! I loved every minute of it! This is my first read from this author and I loved her writing style. It’s 1901, Adelaide and Howard are newly married, and I loved their relationship. They are very caring and considerate of each other. And when a boy, Jack, lands on their doorstep they help him search for his little sister. My heart broke for this little boy and his sister. Jack never gave up though and I loved watching them search and work hard. The ending was so heartwarming and I just loved it. It also has strong Christian content which I always appreciate. It’s the perfect Christmas story! And I definitely recommend! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from netgalley. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
Not rating this but I did not enjoy it. I love a good Christmas novella and the storyline and idea behind this one was perfect for the Christmas mood. However, I felt it could be about half the length that it was and could use a good editing.
Austin was repetitious in the extreme. The number of times she would mention that the protagonist was an heiress who was learning to live within the bounds of her new and lower station was excessive. The number of times she mentioned women's rights and the suffragettes movement was downright distracting. I listened on Audible and eventually just start hitting the forward button to get through the endless mentions.
Again, the idea for the story was sweet and good for the Christmas season. I don't want to rate the book and detract from anyone picking it up. Clearly tons of folks like it and they have a right to do so! I just didn't care for it myself. (And I DO so enjoy a good Christmas novella!)
Waiting for Christmas is a delightful, heart-tugging sequel to All My Secrets continuing Adelaide and Howard’s story after their marriage. I loved All My Secrets and was thrilled to read more about Adelaide and Howard. My expectations were met and exceeded in this novella. The characters, main and secondary, are expertly crafted and easy to cheer for. I love Addy and Howard as individuals and as a couple. The children Jack and Polly stole my heart. The historical aspect of the story centers on the women’s suffrage movement and the plight of the poor immigrants and orphans in 1901 New York. I appreciate the “faith in action” angle of the story and the emphasis on the real meaning of Christmas. This is the kind of book that makes you smile and perhaps shed sad and happy tears. I recommend this charming story of family and faith brimming with hope and love as an enjoyable, inspiring read not only at Christmas time but also at any other time of the year! I received a complimentary copy courtesy of Tyndale House Publishers through Interviews & Reviews and NetGalley with no obligation to write a positive review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I am a lover of books set in the gilded age... especially during Christmas so I was very delighted to read WAITING FOR CHRISTMAS by Lynn Austin. The author captured the essence of that era beautifully.
It is a poignant tale that resonates with readers as it boasts meaningful issues such as women's suffrage, the unfortunate situation orphans endured, and the mystery of young Jack- a significant part of the story that changed Addy and Howard's life. I was deeply touched that Howard was very supportive of his wife.
A gentle story... The true meaning of Christmas is prominent throughout the book and is sure to tug at your heartstrings as it did mine.
Verdict: A delightful book worth reading for holiday romance lovers.
Beautiful message and story! I loved seeing Adelaide and Howard’s story continue. The scriptures to separate the scenes was uplifting. The ending was perfection!
Another five star Christmas read! Full of such meaning including the meaning of Christmas, reconciliation in Christ, giving, and the wonder and hope of Advent, this was a beautiful story with a lot of heart. I loved seeing more of Addy and Howard's story from All My Secrets and the strong faith that all these characters had including the adorable children. There was so much to love about this, and I can't imagine a more perfect Christmastime story!
" She remembered her grandmother looking at her the same way, as if she were the most important person in the world. "
I like this author and the Christian Fiction she writes. And that was the case here. I liked this one, but I was surprised that I didn't love it. For the most part it was a solid 3 stars.
At times this seemed a little overworked and heavy handed, but on the other had, the story was so sweet. That usually isn't a good thing but it worked here. It was the only ending that would have worked. I must be getting old because even with the sappy ending, I found myself adding an extra star for it.
Audiobook An utterly charming Christmas story. A perfect listen for this time of year.
Robin’s Ratings 5🌟 = Out of this world. Amazing. Unforgettable. A personal favorite. 4🌟 = Loved it. Will recommend to others. 3🌟 = Liked it. Glad I read it. 2🌟 = The book was okay, but I’ve enjoyed others so much more. 1🌟 = I didn’t like it and can’t recommend it.
This story was so sweet! We follow the newly wedded Addy and Howard. After Addy finds a little boy, Jack, at their door step, she takes him in and learns his family has been separated after his mother’s death. Together they search for his sister, Polly, and pray for his father’s safe return.
“I’ve prayed some pretty big prayers over the years that seemed to go unanswered. And if I wasn’t careful, I could start to believe that God didn’t love me because He didn’t give me what I asked for. I had to learn that my faith shouldn’t depend on whether or not God answers my prayers exactly the way I want Him to.”
This story is told in four parts, following the four weeks of advent. Love, hope, joy, and peace. The author goes on to show how the happenings of the book align with these four things and how Jesus is with them through it all watching over them and helping them. I loved this book and highly recommend adding it to your holiday tbr!
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
In this follow up to her sterling novel "All My Secrets," Lynn Austin combines the history of women's suffrage, the economic disparities of Gilded Age New York, a search for lost loved ones, and the tradition of lighting Advent candles into a Christmas novella aglow with faith.
If you're in the mood for a poignant holiday read, join the newlywed Forsythes in Waiting for Christmas!
A heartwarming story that points to the true meaning of Christmas. I absolutely loved a further glimpse of Adelaide and Howard, after their happily-ever-after in ALL MY SECRETS. This story explores their first Christmas as their two worlds meet, that of a former socialite and working class lawyer. I found Addy's desire to learn how to care for a home to be utterly delightful. With Mrs. Gleason's help, she turns her humble house into a home that reflects love. Not the empty, shallowness of the mansions of her past.
When a young stowaway turns their lives upside down, Addy and Howard work together, hoping to reunite a family by Christmas. I love the faith threads in Lynn Austin's stories. The young boy's search for his father is symbolic of our search for our heavenly Father.
The themes of hope, love, joy and peace are woven throughout the story, represented by the Advent candles. I love that Addy and Howard continue to trust in God, realizing that His plan is best. Learning that plans and purpose may change as time passes. I was most touched when Addy said, “Maybe that’s all God asks of us. Some people are given the opportunity to do grand things in life, but if we just make a difference in the lives of the people God puts in our paths, I think He’s pleased with that.”
Set against the atmospheric backdrop of New York City in the early 1900's, readers will feel the excitement as they walk the busy streets amidst the bustle of the holiday shopping and the hopelessness amidst the tenements of the poor. Addy's desire to work for women's suffrage, to better women's lives and working conditions is commendable.
A touching story that will definitely put you in the mood for the holiday season.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author/publisher through Netgalley and was not required to write a review. All opinions expressed are my own.
I thoroughly enjoyed this story of hope, faith and love set at Christmas!
Set in the early 1900's, a sequel to All My Secrets, it was wonderful to see the main couple after their marriage and see how they faced new challenges and encouraged each other. Both of them grew in faith as they struggled with finances, social pressures, and decisions for their future. The children were both precious and heart breaking. The side characters of Mrs. Gleason and Susannah, plus Howard's parents, expanded the plot and added wonderful examples of kindness and faith.
Highly recommend for readers who enjoy historical inspirational stories. It would be fine to read as a stand alone, but better enjoyed if the novel All My Secrets is read first.
(An ebook was provided by the publisher via NetGalley. All opinions expressed are my own.)
In general, I really enjoy this author's books. However, this one didn't really match the time period well. Many of the things that happened probably wouldn't have actually been possible during that time in history. Not that I was alive then, but I have read a good bit about that time. :) It's a sweet premise for a story, but didn't seem realistic. Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for the advance e-copy of this book. All opinions expressed are entirely my own.
This was a delightful story in four parts, corresponding to the Four Candles of Advent: Hope- Love-Joy- Peace. After his mother died, all 8 year old Jack wants is to find his 3 year old sister Polly and wait for his father to come home for Christmas. He runs away from an orphanage and hides in the bushes at the townhouse of Addy and Howard. It was great to reconnect with Addy and Howard from All my Secrets to see how this lawyer and former wealthy lady are coping with married life. Howard is a worthy hero, hardworking and fighting for the underdog while supporting Addy and her dreams. Addy is determined to continue what her grandmother and mother started: to uplift women in the early years of the suffragette movement. She wants to be a good wife and learn domestic skills that were missing in her privileged upbringing. Jack steals the show with his doggedness to find his missing sister and is certain his father will return by Christmas. This story will tug at your heart and give you a peek at what New York City was like in the early 1900s. With solid spiritual content, this story has characters who rely on God and use their God-given talents to serve their neighbors. It is all wrapped up in the joy of Christmas and its true meaning of Christ coming to earth. I enjoyed this Christmas story that reminded me in a way of The Gift of the Magi by O’Henry. * I received a complimentary copy of this book from Tyndale Publishing via NetGalley. I was not required to post a favorable review. All opinions are mine alone.*
A sweet and perfect read for Christmastime that reminds the reader about the true meaning of Christmas-- That Jesus came to help the lost and wants us to do the same. A story with glimpses of sadness and the incredible gaps between poor and wealthy, this story is also a good reminder to love everyone more than yourself and to sacrifice for the sake of others. A quick and easy read, you won't be sorry to cozy up with this Christmas story!
It was cute, cozy and easy to read. I liked it, but didn’t love it. Maybe the story and the writing style were a bit too ‘simple’ for me. Didn’t really connect with the characters. Also, the main character’s feminist ideologies felt like being pushed a bit too much lol. But it was a nice read during Christmas.
A heartwarming advent tale of hope, love, joy, and peace, that follows a newlywed couple in the month leading up to their first Christmas together, as they blend their lives, and help new friends in need.
An enjoyable Christmastime read that I wanted to savor, as I read this heartwarming novella that follows Adelaide and Howard Forsythe, as they adjust to a life together. Addy has a big heart, and though she is used to a different lifestyle, she is mindful of how she impacts those around her. I loved her big heart, and thoughtfulness towards others, as well as encouragement. Howard is a wonderful man, with a noble heart, he wants to do everything he can to give Addy the life he believes she deserves. I liked how he great with Jack and Polly, and always has Addy's best interests at heart.
I loved the strong core of faith, and wonderful characters. Mrs. Gleason is a favorite, as well as the children Jack, Polly, and Susannah. Well written, with a heartwarming cozy feel to it that I savored and never wanted to end. An excellent Christmas novellas, set in the Gilded Age, about the true hope of Christmas!
