Endings are Hard

The final Fred book. I am sad to see it end, but delighted by the end.
The House of Fred returns in all its comical competence. Challenges are faced, kindnesses are given, and lore is discovered.
I really enjoyed this volume, and recommend it to all the peoples of good taste that enjoy this series.

Awesome Fred Story

Loved the finale?? in the Fred series, though would love a follow up novella about where each of the clan is at, say at the five hundredth anniversary of the forming of Winslow as a sanctuary. Did Sally remain as Tiamat and did she and Gideon become a thing? Maybe a shoot off series there with pop ins from the crew. Did Bubba find someone who wasn’t in it for the power? How did Lillian, Asha, Charlotte, Al, Neil, Albert, Arch and Amy fare?

I can't believe the series it's over. It's been such a fun ride and I loved it so much. I love the mixture of silly and deep and serious. I love the characters and how much they grew together. And most of all, I love Fredrick Frankford Fletcher, who is an accountant who loves his job and his friends, and just happens to be a vampire.

This was a great conclusion to an awesome series. It made me laugh, it made me cry, and it made me love Fred even more than I already did. Lots of loose ends were tied up really well, and it has a very hopeful and beautiful ending.

It's been so fun to watch Fred grow into himself and become more than he ever thought he could, and I'm going to miss him. I will absolutely be reading them again.

It ends well, but has a few flaws
Yes this is the last book in the series.

This book has a few thin patches where there isn't much, but what isn't there gets padded out with filler and those bald spots go on and on. There were also "problems" that seemed to have obvious solutions that nobody ever thought of. It drove me a bit crazy, they were really effing obvious.
-but all's well that ends well, even if that end seems a bit rushed or abrupt it's better than no end.

I cannot imagine how hard it must be for authors to thread the needle when ending a series with fans who I assume are, rightly, crazy about said series. I was both desperately happy for and dreading this book for that reason. Fred's stories had a perfectly constructed conclusion, and I am so impressed by this ninth book. Am I sad the series is over? No. I am *devastated* the series is over. But it was basically perfect. I am so glad to have read it.

I love the mood of these books. Fred's perspective is so calm and centred that impossible, dream-like events become just another aspect of everyday life.

I would have liked to see more interaction between the team, but had to be satisfied with Gregor finally seeing Fred as a true companion outside of Gideon's orbit.

I really enjoyed this series. I'm sad to see it end but I appreciated the closure/wrap-up of the adventures of Fred and his pack/group of friends/found family.

Love all his stories

Fred is great, all of the characters are interesting and fully defined. The stories keep me reading and pulls me into them.

One of the things I appreciate is how he gives me endings that satisfy.

I look forward to seeing where he takes me next.

A fine ending

I'm always sad when I come to the end of a series but I'm especially sad for this one. I've loved Fred and company from the very beginning and I'm sorry that there won't be any more adventures. Especially since I still have some questions! Thank you, Drew Hayes for this wonderful experience!

Fantastic Ending to an enjoyable series

This volume provides closure for the characters and our hero. Endings can be hard, but Drew Hayes knows how to write them (see also: Superpowereds)
The author gives us a satisfying ending for the series, but leaves it open up enough to revisit the universe in the future.

Masterful conclusion

I’ve always found the “endings” of series to be…lacking. Our dear author, Hayes, included. However, this ending to a sweater vest-loving, power-not-hungry(but appreciative) vampire saga was its own best ending. Well done.

A truly excellent conclusion

Couldn’t ask for a better finish to this series. Thoroughly enjoyable. A solid finish even tougher to accomplish than an interesting start, but Mr. Hayes has managed it, in my opinion.

I forget who it was on the podcast who said it, but it was on an episode of "Writing Excuses" where I heard that there were only two ways to finish a story; either leave the reader wanting more, or wishing that the story had finished sooner as it has outstayed its welcome. This book is definitely in the first camp, which is a massive shame because it is only in this last book that this story has given a genuine hint of just where this series could have gone.

Over the years, I have struggled with this series as it, in turn, has struggled with itself. The core premise of this story has been where this series has shone, a vampire whose strengths lie as far away from traditional vampire strengths as imaginable. The stories where Fred uses those strengths (his accountancy skills, analytical mind, and an over developed doogooder personality) have always been the best of this series. They are the ones that stepped furthest away from the tropes of this stale genre and carried the series to new heights. It forced the author to be genuinely creative to create interesting tales from non-traditional stories, and they shone all the brighter for it.

However, set against that core premise were the tropes of the vampire/paranormal genre that the author couldn't help but lean on a bit too often. Whether from a genuine desire to write that sort of story, a lack of faith in his core premise being enough to maintain reader interest in the series, or some other reason, this series has fallen back into the action based tropes of the genre a few times too many to the point where unfortunately the core premise had to take a back seat to the more traditional story of a protagonist needing to get strong enough to protect everything he holds dear.

I was sad to see the back of what I felt was the superior angle of this story, but the author's talent was such that I knew he could still deliver something great if he committed to the new direction. Unfortunately, it is only in this last book that we get that commitment, and it is only here where we catch a glimpse of what this series could have become.

As with the books preceding this, this is an anthology of shorter stories. Two of these stories stood out the most. One explores the origins of the vampire species and very much sets up the potential Fred has to grow into, while laying at his feet a task of epic scope that could launch an entirely new series of much grander books. The second story, for lack of a better word, is the "climax" of this series, and sees Fred finally use the lessons he has learnt in the previous book to attempt to bring a permanent end to his oldest rivalry in this series. These stores were epic, gripping, and finally embraced the new direction this series desperately needed. The result is fascinating reading that keeps the pages turning at speed, and sadly was over too fast.

So as I turn the last pages of this book, I am left with a bittersweet feeling. Joy at seeing this series finally settle into the story it had promised to be for a number of books now, happiness that this was a great ending to this chapter in Fred's life, but frustration that this is also the end of the story, just at the time when the author was opening up the story for much bigger and better things to come.

I don't know if Drew Hayes plans to return to this universe and tell that much larger story, so for now I will just have to settle for and be happy with the fact that this is the first of those two options for story endings; a story that leaves you wanting more.

A moment of silence for the last Fred story…I will miss him.

Admittedly, people look at me weirdly when I try and spout my love for Fred, the Vampire Accountant. The premise sounds odd and rather lackluster. But from the first story of the accounting nerd, turned vampire…but still a nerd, this series resonated with me for the simple fact that I imagine that I too, if found transformed into a vampire, would still be my boring, nerdy self but now with infinite time to read all the books.

Throughout the Nine stories in this series, Frederick Frankford Fletcher has stayed true to himself the nerdy accountant who uses logic and communication to solve life’s problems. No one in the parahuman community really even likes vampires let alone trust them but Fred has come to be a good friend and leader to other vampires, fae, therians, and various mages. He even has earned the respect of a powerful dragon known as The King of the West. We learned at the beginning of the series that Fred’s maker, Quinn, had attacked the meek and quiet accountant and abandoned him upon his turning, hoping that Fred would go on a murder rampage once he had these tremendous vampire strengths and urges. But Fred figured out a way to survive vampirism and continue his quiet life as an accountant, actually expanding his business to cover parahumans who aren’t especially good with keeping tax records.

Since then Fred and his friends have survived attacks by other vampire houses and unfortunately many continued attacks by his maker, Quinn. Fred has always managed to find a non-deadly way to survive any clash with the other parahumans. Something a vampire has never before bothered to even try when their strength and their numbers usually make it easy for them to overpower their opponents with deadly force.

In the prior story, Fred was teaching at a parahuman college and Quinn was attacking Fred’s students. Knowing vampires can absorb “gifts” from the blood of parahumans, his students each give a donation of blood so that Fred could fight off Quinn and keep them safe.

In this final story, Fred will have his final showdown with his maker but not before we learn why Fred is still able to still channel the strengths given to him at that last battle. Most blood gifts dissipate after a few days or weeks but Fred’s blood gifts are still going strong a year later and the vampire Blood Council wants to know why. Fred will get some answers from the oddest of people when he meets “the first vampire.”

Fred might be benefitting from extra gifts but he will still need the strength of all his friends behind him if he will succeed in finally besting Quinn.

I usually choose audiobooks since Kirby Heyborne first drew me in with a perfect presentation of the mild-mannered vampire accountant (and recently re-listened under the Graphic Audio release), neither of these were available yet and I had to read this for myself but of course, the voices in my head matched the audiobook version exactly.

I was surprised when I saw this book out since I hadn’t checked in with the author’s website in awhile and while I was so happy to stumble upon All Accounts Settled, but I am so sad that any further time with Fred and the gang will be in a re-read.

This is a spectacular finish to one of the best sci fi/fantasy series ever written. The Fred series, which spans nine books and over a decade of writing, is a textbook example of how to build an immersive, expansive, rich & ultimately rewarding fantasy world. I’ve loved each of the previous books in this series, & “All Accounts Settled” serves to wrap up the Fred series with a tidy little bow.

You might think that by the ninth installment, the charm would begin to wane, but Drew Hayes proves that Fred’s world only grows richer, funnier, and more heartfelt with each chapter. This book masterfully balances quirky humor with genuine stakes (pun intended), delivering a story that feels both fresh yet deeply satisfying for longtime fans, of which I am one.

Fred and his friends, the ever-expanding House of Fred, remain the most endearing group of protagonists in modern fantasy. Furthermore, Fred’s dry wit, unwavering decency, and knack for stumbling into chaos make every page a joy. Hayes continues to expand the universe with clever twists, memorable side characters, and a narrative that blends supernatural intrigue with relatable human dilemmas. The pacing is tight, the dialogue sparkles, and the emotional beats land with surprising depth.

If you love urban fantasy that’s equal parts hilarious and heartfelt, All Accounts Settled is a must-read. It’s not just the finale, it’s a celebration of everything that has made this series special over the last twelve years; sharp writing, inventive world-building, and a hero you can’t help but root for. By the time you turn the last page, you’ll be grinning—and wishing for a book ten.

Frustrating finale

Frederick Frankford Fletcher. (Mild spoilers).
One of my favorite characters, and series. This book does a splendid job of wrapping up the series, and literally everyone gets their best ending, even if it feels ham fisted at times.
I wanted to give this a lower overall score for the numerous typos and some of the inane situations (one section involves a surprise birthday party where 90% of the guests are given, at best, hours notice of the event yet everyone brings snacks and a thoughtful gift).
But the final ending is nearly a perfect capstone of the series. The final lines (excluding the epilogue, which arguably ruins the effect but whatever, this is fiction) are an exact copy of the opening monologue for each book. Frustratingly, verbatim. Copy, paste. Which would be 100% amazing & not come off lazy if the tense had been changed! We get "...for the works you are about to read..." as the CONCLUSION of the series! If this had been simply some thing like "...for the works you have just read..." the wrap would have been *chef's kiss* phenomenal.

Sigue siendo tierno, cozy, profundo, y extremadamente divertido.

This final installment of the Fred, the Vampire Accountant series delivered exactly the kind of reading experience I hoped for: cozy, memorable, and the perfect ending to a world I’ve loved for years. The pacing was beautiful, carrying me through centaur honor duels, magical anomalies, underwater vampire cities, and long‑awaited revelations without ever feeling rushed or uneven.

What Drew Hayes does exceptionally well here is the wrap‑up. Every thread, every relationship, every lingering question finds its place in a way that feels deeply satisfying without losing the series’ signature warmth and humor. The emotional beats land with quiet power, honoring Fred’s journey while expanding the world in ways that feel both surprising and inevitable.

When I turned the final page, I felt that bittersweet mix of gratitude and sadness, the kind you only get when a series has truly meant something. I’m so sad it’s over, and I’m absolutely going to miss this found family of parahumans. But as endings go, this one was perfect.

A beautiful ending to the series.
One thing I love about this author is knowing that the ending has to have a payoff for the reader. And this book has all the payoff that I've come to expect from this series and author -- with a few surprises along the way that I wasn't entirely expecting.
This wraps the series really well, while at the same time there are still clearly stories left untold -- but that happens when most of your characters are either immortal or at least have long lifespans.
What impresses me the most is that from book 1 Fred is a boring, average guy with a heart of gold. By the end of the series, the average guy part is clearly shredded to bits, but the humility he's brought to the table still allows that heart of gold to shine.
It's impressive for a series to have a protagonist that undergoes a lot of growth, and power, but still maintains where you know that's the same person.
Well done all the way around.

Sad to see Fred go

Well this is the final book, or it reads like it. Good story with a good conclusion. Nice the way the book ends in part at the beginning of our journey from book one. A couple gross fights, but nothing too bad.

Some language but not overdone.

No sex in this book but those were never than an allusion to it happening.

Another same sex romance but this series never shoved any romance in your face.

Everything has always been well balanced in this series and I'm sad to see it go. Though I've reread and listened to it before and would reread and listen again. Especially this last new book. Everything from Drew Hayes is enjoyable.

All things considered, this is a pretty decent series finale. I’m sad that we’ve come to the end of the road with Fred. But it was also getting to be time. We aren’t all immortal, after all, so things always come to an end. (Or should do). Drew Hayes does an excellent job mapping out where he’s going and creating satisfying story arch’s, which I really appreciate. I’m not going to offer any spoilers, just going to wax on about how I do think this does a really nice job wrapping things up. It’s inspired me to go back to the beginning and read through them all again with the end in mind.

Aw man, I love this series, and it ended with such a great full-circle. I'll miss these guys.

This entry has a lot of great awww moments--found family, a dash of romance, and Fred being unapologetically Fred. The Fred-isms are more prevalent than ever--lots of accounting metaphors and ways at looking at the world, and I loved every minute. Great twists on everything, in general--Fred, and the author by extension, have a really unique way of looking at old tropes. The story didn't skimp on action either, and we even got to meet some new people. Excellent worldbuilding right up to the end.

The last few Fred books have been a little disappointing but Drew Hayes far surpassed my expectations with this final book. It sticks to the 5 story anthology format but the first two are ok and the last three are superb. I was pleasantly surprised by both the answers to some of the mysteries from earlier entries and by Fred's character development. I feel like Kirby Heyborne's narration added a lot to the audiobook as ever. If you've read and enjoyed the last 8 books in the series then you'll enjoy this one too.

So happy to read, so sad to say goodbye

Drew Hayes has ended another series I was not ready for, but has done such a great job I can accept it. Thank you for providing me endless hours of entertainment. This book does a great job of heralding back some past experiences and allowing closure for us readers. Maybe even leaving an opening, however small, for some short stories to be created.

A satisfying ending

Well, this book feels in many ways. Like other stories satisfying, it has a more holistic flow that ties it back to the beginning and helps prepare it for the end of the series. You get some satisfying conclusions to certain characters. Answers to a few questions and some suggestions for the future. After the series ends all in a book worth picking up.And i'm glad to find an offer who knows how to end the series

A satisfactory end to a great series. Hayes gives all the members of the House of Fred a small role to play, but the story very much centers on Fred. He really comes into his own.. As Gideon points out near the end, Fred is a natural politician in that he he listens and trys to find the best solution for all involved.
