From a very young age, Simon Brading was in no doubt that he wanted to be a writer. Life got in the way a bit, though, and it was thirty years before he sat down and put pen to paper.
Less than a decade later he has more than twenty books published in various genres of fiction (sci-fi, steampunk, time travel, ballet...) and has no intention of being slowed down by anything except his son's demands on his time.

"Well, it's actually a lot worse than I let on - we're fighting a full out war and we're losing. Badly."

Sam may look like a teenager, he might go to school, play with his friends and do all the typical things...but inside, it's a whole different story.

You see, Sam has:

"The ability to travel through time, or 'Displace', as they called it."

Which allows for him to go on wild and whimsical adventures - once as a pirate, once to meet president Lincoln, and so on.

But Displacing comes with a price, one that is sorely catching up with Sam.

Despite the risks, Sam must displace again, and soon.

"...there was work for him to do - an official Society mission."

Quentin Price - a rouge and a scoundrel - just barely managed to escape from Sam Vives last round...and he's been wreaking havoc ever since.

'Which means...'
'We might have a spy in our midst.'
They stopped talking, aghast at the possibility.
Rachel shook her head. 'No. I don't, no, I can't believe it.'

The stakes are higher than ever.

Will Sam and his friends triumph over this latest challenge? Will Sam even survive?

As always, I had a LOT of fun between these pages. I am really enjoying how the plot is unfolding - there are so many twists and turns, and it is so fun to try to figure out where the book is going next.

I LOVE how Simon Brading writes this series - Sam is such a wonderfully real main character and I'm really warming up to Rachel.

When Rachel was first introduced, I wasn't sure what to think about her, but the more page space she's getting, the more I enjoy her character.

The humor is just right. I love how Brading manages to sneak it in there.

'But it's crawling with bad guys!'
'"Bad guys", John? Really? Just because they are wearing black?'
'No... not just... I mean, well, look at them...'

All in all, it was so much fun to delve back into this world and I cannot wait to read the next!

Another fun romp through time. I presume the majority of people who are interested in this story have read the first two books in the Displacers series. If not, it can still stand on it's own. Key points are explained without boring returning fans. Simon Brading once again portrays the past so well you can smell it. (He really should apologize for that because it's not always a pleasent smell in the past.)

Sam and Rachel start off with a little training in Paris. They were fortunate to visit before the glass monstrosity blemished the main courtyard (Cour Napoléon) of the Louvre Palace. (Sorry about that. It's a personal pet peeve.) Anyway, Sam also has a very short mission to Gettysburg which tells us even minor adjustments to time can have a big impact.

The main time displacement in this story is touted in the title of the book. The Whitechapel Murders of Jack the Ripper in the 19th century mesh well with the sinister Quentin Price, Sam's nemesis. You may think you can guess what Quentin is up to, but you'd be wrong (probably). It's a tumultuous time, made even more so by Quentin and his associates. Sam must find Quentin and thwart his plans. There's only one problem. Sam has no idea what Quentin's plans really are. Fortunately for Sam, he's not alone this time. He also finds loyal supporters in the time-line. As Quentin would say to Sam, "Again! What is it about you?" Sam just brings out the best in people - something Quentin would never understand.

I highly recommend this book as well as the two previous Displacer series books (Pirate's Heir & Secret of the Ancients). I can't yet recommend the 4th book in the series since I haven't read it yet, but I trust Simon Brading won't let me down.

I have just one warning: If you don't intend to read the next story, don't read the Epilogue. You might just find yourself hoodwinked into reading the next.
