Breaking Shells

Rate this book
Simon, Tim and Ruth grow up together in a quiet English village, finding adventure in caving, climbing, motorcycles, and dreaming of the future. But in the shifting world of 1960s Britain – a decade of both awakening and repression – hidden desires will soon test every bond they share.

As Simon and Tim leave for university, one to Manchester and the other to Cambridge, they discover love that defies convention, and a society that punishes difference. Simon wrestles with faith, family and his own shame, while Tim is drawn into a dangerous friendship that will change his life forever. Meanwhile, Ruth’s affection for her Sunday School teacher deepens into something both forbidden and freeing.

Set against the backdrop of the partial decriminalisation of homosexuality in 1967, Breaking Shells is a tender, courageous story about growing up, coming out, and finding self-respect in the face of prejudice. With lyricism and quiet power, it explores how friendship and love – however fragile – can endure, even in the most unforgiving times.

There’s a very good story here, but the execution isn’t quite there. There are moments which are tender, others which are tedious. Ruth’s story arc could have probably been cut out, with a greater focus on Cathy instead. Simon and Tim’s relationship is set up as fundamental but becomes tangential - this is not in itself a problem, but I didn’t find the evolution convincing. Not a bad debut by any means, but nothing to write home about.

Breaking Shells is a really engaging and thoughtfully written book that stays with you after you’ve finished it. The descriptive language bring each scene to life and make it easy to picture everything as you read, helping you feel connected to the story and its emotions. It’s the kind of book that draws you in gently but leaves a lasting impression through its vivid and expressive writing. Very much recommended.

A really good story, with lovely characters who make you want to find out what happens next. I thoroughly enjoyed it! A difficult read sometimes as things were so different then - it is good to be reminded of how far society has come. Definitely worth a read and I will seek out more of Neville Judson's books.

The occasional enjoyable section. Awfully tropey, predictable and lacking any meaningful depth or nuance.

This is an interesting, unusual book, which made me realise how difficult life can be for teenagers who don’t think in the same way as most people around them. I enjoyed it very much.

This book takes you into the freedom of the 1960's and growing up, through to adolescence and being gay.
