Maki Minami ( 南マキ) is a Japanese manga author. She is best known as the author of manga series Special A.
In 2001, her short story Day Dream Believer (デイ・ドリーム・ビリーバー) received an Honourable Mention for Hakusensha's 25th Athena awards. She debuted in Hana to Yume's October 2001 issue with a short story titled Faraway Blue (彼方の青 Kanata no Ao). Maki Minami's longest running series, Special A, began publication in 2003 and recently ended in 2009. Her current series, Seiyū ka-! began serialization in Hana to Yume in 2009, after the completion of Special A. Her recent works also include the oneshot Ane☆Mone Seikaten (アネ☆モネ 生花店), which appeared in the April 2009 edition of The Hana to Yume.
Komomo is cliche, but it's entertaining, it's cute, and it's packed with FEELS.
You've read this/watched this before: rich girl ends up on the streets and has to change. Maybe a more experienced figure guides her along the way, and love blossoms between them.
But cliche doesn't mean it can't be fun.
(And you all need to see The Shop Around the Corner because You've Got Mail is trash compared to it's origins.)
Komomo and Natsu have always loved the other but it wasn't the intense, burning-passion that she was used to. It was a comforting, safe love, where the other's feelings was equal to their own.
I didn't think I'd like this series as much as I do, and I definitely think it's worth owning. If you're new to manga, this is definitely a good start. It's only 5 volumes of fluffy goodness and plenty of French cooking.
But most of all, it has heart.
If your new to manga and want some recommendations in the delicious romance department available in English:
Strobe Edge has a sweet, compassionate male lead and a love triangle that actually works for once. Deals with themes like falling out of love, pursuing a career, and new love.
Romanece & Fantasy: Fruits Basket (This is a classic for a reason) Kamisama Kiss The Ancient Magus's Bride
Ancient Magus Bride is Beauty & Beast meets Harry Potter. Romance isn't too strong so far, but it's a true gem worthy of your time. Even those who dislike romance.
College Aged: Princess Jellyfish (comedy, romance, satire, female empowerment) Nana
FINALLY localized in English, Princess Jellyfish remains a title I adore. College aged protagonists trying to figure out their life, all are nerds, and one person might change that all.
Historical: Requiem of the Rose King (much darker than most; based off Shakespear's Richard III) The Heiress and the Chauffeur
Rose King tackles harsh topics like intersex and what that meant during the middle ages. Religion, homosexuality, betrayal, politics, and Shakespear. Pretty great.
Thriller/Sci-fi/Action & Romance: QQ Sweeper Dengeki Daisy Library Wars From Far Away Orange
From Far Away handles the "girl in new world" very well, tackling the fact that she has to learn this world's language to survive, for one. She's not a badass nor psychically strong, but she uses her wits and is a very likable heroine.
If you can read Japanese:
Male Lead for Female Demographic: Hatsu*Haru Mermaid Boys (genderbent retelling of the little mermaid)
Naruse is the Mermaid Prince who falls in love with a human girl. In order to escape an arranged marriage, he gives up his beauty and form to take on that of a skinny guy to win her love. But she already hates him?
I am happy (though I wish we could have seen more of an epilogue of sorts at the end).
I feel a little sappy because I teared up in a few places. I feel in many ways we see this series go full circle and it was refreshing, rewarding, and heart clenching.
Natsu I will say is stubborn and sometimes acts NOT smart, but I am glad that we learned more about his feelings and got an overall "insight" into his history. It made up for the parts where you just want to shake him for saying something so insensitive.
Komomo really wrecked my heart in one spot. Man, that was hard to see and read! But she is such a brave young woman! It made me happy to see the mangaka mention in the sidebars how much she loved Komomo because she is such a special heroine. I have deeply enjoyed being on this journey with her and very happy she got a happy ending! <3
This is a solid series and would recommend to those who are looking for a more "mature" shojo manga and deeply enjoy seeing character growth while they bake and serve sweets.
This volume is the climax of the series. The final volume and it's such a let down... I mean they didn't even kiss! I waited this whole time, through all this build up and no kiss! None. I can't even. I know I probably sound silly to you but in my mind it would've made sense for them to at least kiss. Maybe when he's had her in his arms before the dad came into the scene... just a little kiss. Let me get into plot for this volume a little bit...
So it turns out that Komomo is the arranged marriage for Mitsuru and he wants to know why. That's when he talks to Natsu and finds out that Komomo is a true princess and her father just lost all their money but is close to getting everything back. Natsu STILL refuses to say that he loves Komomo at this point. When the time comes, he lets her be taken back to her old house. Willing to let her go... just like that. It made me want to slap his face.
Now they do end up together (duh) but it felt so rushed and just.... not satisfying at all. I was really let down. I'd been waiting since volume one and that was how the author decided to end it? Just made me sad. The series is still fun and do I recommend it as everyone's taste is different and you may like the ending. So give it a go. Can't hurt anything.

This was a great conclusion to the world's cutest manga series! I really liked the way the story ended even if I know how it was going to end. Our two main characters finally find their way together and most off I loved that I got to watch Komomo make this drastic change and evolution. She was amazing. I loved how she had the ability to become such a great person after being so selfish and irresponsible when I read the first volume. Talk about character development haha! If you haven't read this series I would definitely recommend picking it up when you have the opportunity to do so.
im not sure why i liked this one as much as i did. objectively i think parts of it are a hot mess. insanely toxic stuff. at the same time. idk. it was fun. i loved the art style and komomo was a real treat of a protagonist.
This was a series I liked more and more as the series went on. It's cute, a little silly, and this last volume wrapped up nicely.
Anything else I say won't do Komomo Confiserie justice, but there are a few things I want to make note of.
The romance was slow-burning, with one character not wanting to admit their feelings and the other just not understanding their feelings. It was nice to see the girl take the initiative. Natsu softened as the series went on and grew as a character. Komomo also grew a lot as well.
Summing it up, this was a cute little romantic comedy and I think worth a read.
Contains Chapters 24 - 29: I really enjoyed this series as a whole and hope that Maki Minami comes out with another manga series soon. I felt that this volume did a good job of tying the story up and the bonus pages at the end were really cute as well.
(I want to give this a 4.5, actually, but I'll be fine with a 5 for now. This was a good ending, anyway!) This was a great read for me! I felt as though the growth of Komomo moved me the most, besides my weakness for sweets in each volume. I loved the dresses at the beginning panels being inspired by different sweets, I loved how conflict could turn into friendship (even though some details seemed too unrealistic for my taste, but alas, that's what fiction overall is for. I don't fault the mangaka, as it was just as humorous as intended, and plenty touching), and the art style. I'm sad to see this only lasted for five volumes, and that the ending and resolution were resolved all too quickly at the final pages. I wanted to see even just a little more of Yuri, and some justice for Mitsuru. They were great characters, as well as the rest of the main cast. This is a great book for someone who wants a light-hearted, wacky, but endearing read of a manga, and as much as a sweet-tooth as I do. By now, you've probably already finished this book as well, but if you haven't, please at least give this a try. (I hope this review helps, and have a great day!)
I adore Maki Minami so much. Despite my vast history with shoujo manga, she's the only author I still follow to this day, and SA will always be my favourite. There were a lot of similarities between this and SA, but I found them delightful rather than rehashed. The height of the series was in volumes 1 and 2; after that, the story assimilated into the plot we've seen hundreds of times before, and though that was disappointing, it was still an enjoyable read. I really wish Natsu had been more fleshed out, and the two other love interests, Shu and Mitsuru, had been skipped entirely. I feel like they didn't add much to the plot.
All in all, really cute read. I love the heck out of Minami-sensei's quirky humour.
How does Natsu feel about Komono? He's been in denial for so long - and now he's about to lose everything. Komono is no longer in his care and back home. She also has an arranged marriage coming up. C'mon everyone, see what's in front of your face!
I have to say, I was a bit disappointed by this series. It had its cute moments, but it just never settled into what it should be. Natsu felt so buttoned down, that I never was in line with his motivations, nor did I like his cruelty. Komono was too innocent at times, and is still too much of a princess at the end, waiting on her prince to come through for her. Not highly recommended. My opinion? It's a good summer read from the library, but not worth collecting.
I really did enjoy this series but the ending felt so rushed! And I wish we could’ve seen more of Komomo and Natsu together.... I know it’s trivial but they didn’t even kiss... *pouts pathetically* Anyway, I love that Komomo changed for the better and she found out where she belonged.
Overall, this is a great riches to rags, rom com series. It’s a nice short read. I breezed through this series in one day and I don’t regret it. It made me smile a lot!
Finally able to read the final volume of this series, and I think it was one of the better volumes in the series. Natsu is still emotionally constipated in these last chapters, but Komomo carries the story with her delightful personality, so who cares?
Even though this 5 volume series ended much as I expected, there were some turns that were somewhat surprising and made the arrogant rich girl trope much more interesting. Give you a bit of the Elle Woods vibes.
Such a cute series. Love the romance, the individual characters, the plot, and most of all the yummy looking desserts (lol). This author can do no wrong!
Excerpt -- On Going It Alone The old Komono was used to having people do everything for her. I can take care of myself. Now I know how it feels, the pleasure of doing things for myself.
