A desperate young woman, risking everything to escape her domestic hell.
Gemma’s daring bid for freedom from a violent marriage launches her into a glittering world of money, sex, and privilege. Jackson, the son of a wealthy and powerful family, pulls her into a life where her painful past can never touch her again.
From the outside, it looks like she’s been sprinkled with fairy dust. But Gemma quickly realizes nothing is ever quite as it seems. As the cracks in her perfect new life start to appear, she finds herself drawn to Jesse, a detective who both helped and hurt her in the past.
A determined man, driven by an undeniable longing.
From the first time he laid eyes on Gemma, Jesse couldn’t get her out of his mind. Then he made a mistake that forced their separation before he ever had a chance to win her over. Now that he’s found her again, nothing matters except keeping her safe and by his side.
Jackson, however, has no intention of stepping aside. Tempers and egos flare as the two men compete for Gemma’s heart.
A savage betrayal. An unbreakable spirit.
In the blink of an eye, Gemma’s life erupts into chaos and danger when the man she thought she’d escaped comes back to claim his brutal revenge. In the heart-breaking aftermath of her harrowing survival, she must find a way forward for herself and her young daughters.
Through heartbreak, trauma, and betrayal, Gemma is determined to step into her own power and control her destiny on her own terms.
This is not your typical, perfectly polished, cookie cutter romance where everything is neat and predictable. Rich Man’s House leans into the messy side of relationships and real life, which honestly made it a really interesting read.
Gabrielle Oliver does a great job writing complex characters who evolve over time. The relationships are messy, complicated, and sometimes hard to navigate, which actually makes it feel a lot more like real life. Watching Gemma work through big decisions about love, family, and the direction of her life keeps the stakes feeling very real, especially because her choices affect not only her but her kids too.
There is a tiny bit of spice mixed in along the way 🌶️ 🌶️🌶️ which adds some fun moments to the story.
The characters are really where this book shines. Gemma is someone you get to grow with throughout the story. When we first meet her, things might seem a certain way on the surface, but as the story unfolds you start to understand just how complicated her situation really is and why some of the choices she faces are not as simple as they might look from the outside.
Jackson is introduced as the kind of character who instantly grabs your attention. He’s confident, magnetic, and sweeps into Gemma’s life in a way that changes things pretty quickly. At first he seems like the kind of person who has it all together, but as the story continues you start to see more layers to him and the dynamic between him and Gemma becomes a lot more complex than it first appears.
Then there’s Jesse, who brings a completely different energy to the story. He’s not written as some perfect, flawless character either, which I appreciated. He feels very human and emotionally driven, and the way he interacts with Gemma adds another layer to the choices she has to think about when it comes to love, stability, and what a relationship can look like.
The story also throws in a few plot twists that you genuinely don’t see coming lol. Just when you think you have a character or situation figured out, something shifts and it makes you rethink things a bit.
Another thing I liked was how you end up forming attachments to characters you might not expect. Randy (love Randy lol) ended up being one of my favorites, which honestly surprised me a little lol.
Overall, this felt like a more emotionally layered take on romance. The characters feel human, the choices carry real weight, and there are definitely a few moments that pull at your heartstrings.
There are trigger warnings included, so definitely check those before reading!
I’ll definitely be recommending this one to friends and coworkers who like romance that isn’t afraid to get a little messy.
