I was looking for something in the vein of Ruby Dixon’s Risdaverse series and, on paper, this one sounded like it might fill the bill. Grumpy, totally ripped alien? Check! Quirky human with past trauma? Check! Decrepit space station? Check! But the book reads like the author was just checking boxes too.
First of all, the space station only exists as far as the characters need it to for each scene. I couldn’t tell whether it’s completely deserted except for the two protagonists and a couple coworkers who pop in occasionally, or if it’s a neglected-but-bustling place whose other occupants are simply never described.
Then there’s the way the characters mentally and verbally rehash their individual trauma waaay too many times, in almost the same way each time. Many of the spicy scenes play out in basically the same way. And sometimes lines of dialogue are nearly identical to ones earlier in the book. In fact, reading this, I had the constant sneaking suspicion that it was written by AI—which is almost worse if it wasn’t!
DNF 20% Descriptions are vague at best. I have no idea what the space station looks like, not really, especially since the scenes happen in a limited number of rooms and not even those are described very well. Except maybe the lab, and even that is not a great description. I have no idea what the “pornographic” plants even look like, but this woman sure seemed turned on by them. The story seemed to be a bunch of scenes put together with spit and a prayer, at least what I read was. And the cover seems made by AI, which is a good indicator of the quality of the book, at least in this case. If someone said this book was edited by AI, I would believe it. Not that it is. For all I know, it was never even seen by an editor before being published. The audiobook is narrated by AI, too, so it wouldn’t surprise me if the author used AI in any other steps of the writing process. There’s no photo on the author’s profile, nor any information I could find about her. There seems to be nothing out there, not even Facebook or Instagram. Plus all her books seem to have been published with less than a fortnight between them. It’s very suspicious, TBH.
Jenna realized when she arrived at her "Dream Job" that she had been duped. Someone wanted to get rid of her. They had sent her to a totally run down station. Well...that's life and Jenna is going to make the most of this opportunity.
Kregna felt the pull when Jenna arrived but he knew he couldn't be what she needed. Even if she is his fated mate. Even if he can't get her out of his mind. He was shamed ...how could she want him?
A short read that just can't be put down. I mean afterall how many stories have plant porn, a hilarious smart alec AI, romance and a bit of intrigue?
it has heart, humor, a bit of angst, lots of spice, and the snarkiest AI named Murphy. oh yes, and if you like plant porn, Duke is ready to rock your leaves!
This station is like a dysfunctional MASH unit with grumpy, but hot, alien maintenance guys one if whom falls for the new botanical researcher. Their road to romance is rocky but the HEA is well worth the read. Enjoy. I am on to the bext book in this series.
I enjoyed this story very much. It not only had a beautiful love story, but it had important lessons about life and self-discovery that each half of the couple learned as the relationship faced obstacles. Jenna learned to value herself and what she had the right to expect for herself from others and through her, Kregan learned that before pleasing everyone else's expectations you have to do what is right for you. Really a nice story.
I really enjoyed Sunshine’s Grumpy Alien! It was a short cozy rom-com. I loved the idea of this mix-match crew on a falling apart station and found family. Love was able to find a way despite inner demons and self-doubt. I will definitely read more of this series and would recommend to alien romance readers.
