2026 Book #10: Cthulhu Dreams (2025), edited by A. Balsamo
A surprisingly good anthology of Lovecraft-inspired/cosmic-horror stories. I say “surprising” because I’ve read widely in the cosmic-horror and weird-fiction genres, and yet hadn’t heard of any of the writers in this volume before I bought it. This could have been a bad sign. But the selections here were mostly effective. Many had fast-paced plotting, which is something I wasn’t used to in this context. This made me reflect on the fact that the weird writers I gravitate towards – Ligotti, Aickman, Kiernan, Campbell, etc. – tend to write in a slow-burning, brooding style. But it turns out that quick, punchy storytelling can sometimes heighten a sense of weirdness. The best stories in this anthology, in my opinion, are the ones by Derek Austin Johnson, A. M. Sutter, Kelly Zimmer, and G. D. Burkhead.
