A Little Merry Christmas

Rate this book
Amanda Barnard was supposed to be celebrating her promotion — not watching it go to someone else.

Determined to prove herself, Amanda agrees to save a struggling animal shelter with nothing but grit, charm, and a last-minute holiday campaign. She expected obstacles. She didn’t expect Elias — the grumpy shelter vet who challenges every idea. And she definitely didn’t expect to take home Merry, a timid Labrador no one else chose.

As Amanda fights to save the shelter, keep her campaign on track, and convince her boss she deserves more, it’s Merry who teaches her how to slow down, trust herself, and find joy in the mess. And Elias… might not be so impossible after all.

Full of heart, healing, and one unforgettable dog, A Little Merry Christmas is a warm holiday hug for anyone who’s ever questioned their worth — and come out stronger.

This was a cute Christmas romance that screamed "hallmark holiday magic". It was a charming read perfect for the festive season, and the exact kind of story that, if made into a film, would very likely top the Christmas movie charts.

I really liked the plot and thought the "twelve days of dog-mas" campaign was so fun! However, I did feel that the writing sometimes did more telling than showing. This, in my opinion, made it read a bit like the main character, Amanda, was writing in a diary.

I adored how passionate Elias was about the animals, and I loved Amanda's personal growth, specifically her gradual realisation of her worth and capabilities outside of her rather repressive workplace. However, unfortunately that is the extent of which I felt something significant for the characters (well, the human characters anyway.. the rescue dogs were the highlight for me). I just didn't feel that I got to know any character particularly well, or that any of them had any especially remarkable qualities, making them feel a bit two dimensional.

Overall, although the premise was great and the story itself was fun, I didn't find the execution fantastic and would've loved to have got to know the characters more deeply. But, if you're looking for a quick and cosy festive romance featuring some adorable rescue dogs, then this might just be the book for you!

A Little Merry Christmas by Elizabeth Standish was an enjoyable read, perfect for the days I was having.

What's more cute than a puppy at Christmas time? A lot of dogs and a bunch of families ready to have dates with them?

Amanda is a capable and determined woman, and she will show her value to her boss and collegue with a good and out of the box campaign to save the animal shelter.
I liked to go on this journey with her, witnessing the growth of her relationships with Elias, the shelter staff, the community and a pretty dog.

I recommend to read it if you are looking for a cosy Christmas novel.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for kindly giving me an advanced copy of this book to read.

A Little Merry Christmas is a cozy, Hallmark-style holiday romance with festive charm. The Twelve Days of Dogmas campaign was a fun concept, and the shelter dogs were easily the story's highlight.

I enjoyed Amanda’s growth and her journey toward recognizing her worth, and the holiday atmosphere was present without feeling overly cheesy. That said, the writing occasionally leaned more toward telling than showing, which made some moments feel rushed.

Overall, this was a quick read that's perfect for dog lovers looking for a cozy holiday romance.

This book truly touched my heart. 💝🐶

🎄 A Little Merry Christmas (The Holidays in Hamilton, Book 1)
by Elizabeth Standish
Publisher: Thistle and Phoenix Press, Ltd.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5/5

Blurb 🐶✨
She’s built her career on perfection until Christmas (and a shelter full of dogs) turns her world delightfully upside down. A promotion gone wrong, a struggling animal shelter, a grumpy-but-soft veterinarian, and one very special dog named Merry make this holiday story equal parts chaos, romance, and heart.

My Thoughts:
A Little Merry Christmas is a beautifully written, heart-warming holiday story that shines a light on shelter dogs especially those from a war dog shelter, which makes the story feel even more meaningful knowing this reflects a real-life reality.

Amanda Barnard is such a strong, relatable heroine. I absolutely loved her character arc from someone who believes perfection equals success to a woman who learns her worth doesn’t need anyone’s approval. Her growth felt natural, emotional, and deeply satisfying.

And Merry… oh my heart 🐾❤️ The bond between Amanda and Merry is tender, healing, and incredibly heart-warming. Watching their relationship grow reminded me why rescue stories matter so much sometimes the ones we save end up saving us.

The animal shelter setting, the Twelve Days of Dogmas campaign, the holiday chaos, and the slow-burn connection with Elias all come together perfectly. This book made me smile, tear up, and believe a little more in kindness, second chances, and Christmas magic.

Perfect for pet lovers who want every animal to have a happy home, and strong women finding their voice, this book is an absolute must-read.
A perfect holiday read with a big heart. 🐶🎄✨
Highly recommended!

⭐️ 3.5 STARS ⭐️

This is such a feel‑good, easy‑to‑read festive romance. We follow Amanda, who misses out on a promotion she’s convinced she deserves. In a last‑ditch effort to prove herself, she strikes a deal with her boss: help an animal shelter on the brink of closing by boosting its visibility and fundraising… and the promotion is hers.

Her mission to get the shelter noticed brings her face‑to‑face with Elias, the grumpy veterinarian whose only priority is the wellbeing of the dogs (which is fair enough). Their dynamic is fun from the start, with lots of friction and heart. Watching them slowly warm to each other is really satisfying.

The animal shelter element was my favourite part. The dogs bring so much chaos, charm, and personality to the story. I loved how the book highlighted the different temperaments of the dogs and how each one fits a different kind of family. Merry, the anxious Lab, completely stole my heart and is the kind of fictional dog you want to curl up with while reading. She reminded me a lot of my own dog, Sully, who is a rescue from Greece.

The brief mention of the World War II war dogs was another touching detail. When their service ended, many had no home to return to and were taken in by shelters, which added a touching historical note to the book.

There are mentions of cats, but they felt more like an afterthought. I almost wish the story had either given them more space or focused solely on the dog shelter.

Amanda and Elias have great chemistry, with a slow build that really pays off. There’s just enough spice to suit the characters without overshadowing the emotional elements.

I do think the story and characters could have gone a little deeper. The premise is genuinely lovely, but there were moments where it felt a bit flat, as though there was still room for more development.

Overall, it’s an enjoyable, festive read with a big, warm focus on dogs… which is always going to be a win for me.

If you're looking for a book that will pull at your heartstrings while keeping you thoroughly entertained, look no further than "A Little Merry Christmas" by Elizabeth Standish! I can't express how much I adored this book; it’s truly a gem that you simply cannot miss.

From the very first page, the dogs captured my heart—they’re irresistibly charming, and their stories will make you both laugh and cry. Trust me, you’ll want to have Kleenex nearby because the emotions you'll experience are real and profound. The way Standish weaves together the lives of these characters is nothing short of brilliant; they feel so alive and relatable.

The love story between Elias and Amanda is beautifully crafted. Their journey of fighting against their feelings, coupled with Elias’ creative counters to Amanda's ad campaigns, adds an engaging twist that keeps you rooting for them. The concept of 12 days of dog dates? Pure genius!

Not to mention, the action in this book is sprinkled with delightful humor, making it a page-turner you won’t want to put down. I can’t recommend "A Little Merry Christmas" highly enough—it’s a perfect blend of joy, sadness, and heartwarming moments. Dive into this story and discover the magic for yourself; I promise you won’t regret it! I can't wait to delve into more of her books.

This is a lovely Christmas story – how could it be otherwise featuring a sweet golden Labrador, named Merry, a feisty ad manager fighting for her career, and a crusty handsome veterinarian?

Amanda Barnard has just been overlooked for a hard-earned promotion. Not about to take the results without challenging the boss, she negotiates a deal; if she takes on a pro bono client and succeeds, she will be named co-director. The said client is the historic Hamilton Animal Shelter, which is on the verge of closing due to lack of funding.

As Amanda engages with the shelter staff, particularly one handsome, obstinate vet named Elias, they jointly plan to fulfill her creative idea for the Twelve Days of Dogmas. While such a series of events are improbable in the real world, in the fictional city of Hamilton they make for a delightful and entertaining storyline. The touch of romance and the successful outcome for the shelter add to the enjoyment.

My thanks to the author, the publisher, and NetGalley for the privilege of reviewing this book. The opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

For lovers of Hallmark holiday movie plots and dogs, this will be an endearing little read. Overall, a predictable cute romance with fairly undeveloped characters and a major focus on the dogs of the shelter at the heart of the plot. This is both a somewhat fresh take and also took away from the overall sub-storylines which would have been interesting to explore more to provide a little more depth. As a cat person myself, throwing in “and cats” a few times throughout wasn’t a great way to remind readers most shelters house both cats and dogs, and took away from the story. A solid two-star (it was ok) read in its ARC format with a multitude of of errors that became distracting about halfway through, but will hopefully be fixed with a good copy edit warranting the extra star by publication. I received an advance review copy (ARC) for free via BookSirens, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

A Merry Little Christmas by Elizabeth Standish is a gentle, cozy holiday read that slowly works its way under your skin. It starts off a bit slow, but once it settles, the story of Amanda and Elias—both carrying more heartache than they let on—completely pulled me in. Their connection felt warm and real, and the addition of the sweet shelter dog honestly made the whole book even more special. That little pup brought so much heart to the story.

I just loved this book so much. I would read and re-read it!

Standish writes characters who feel fully human—trying, stumbling, healing—and every small step forward felt earned. And don’t forget to read the acknowledgments this time. There’s a lot of fascinating information about the war dogs and their roles, which added such an unexpected layer of depth.

Warm, festive, and quietly emotional—this one will stay with me for a while.

Perfect for dog lovers!!! How could you not enjoy A Little Merry Christmas— Shelter dogs, Christmas and Love all wrapped up with a bow!
Amanda learns her own strength and worth as an ambitious ad exec even when things go perfectly wrong. Elias, the grumpy veterinarian is really just a tragic, marshmallow whose care for the dogs is just precious. All the Hallmark vibes!
I also really enjoyed that while love was the central theme throughout, it wasn’t just Romance, although it is sweet and a little steamy, but focused on so much love and joy and acceptance of self and others.

When Amanda Barnard's promotion is given to another person, she's forced to reassess what success means. She takes on a pro-bono case helping an animal shelter quickly turn their image around.

Elias is a veterinarian at the shelter who brings warmth and steady support to Amanda's chaotic new reality. A Labrador named Merry ends up in Amanda’s care after a holiday event.

I liked the mix of festive romance and work drama combined with the sweet chaos that comes with fostering a dog. Amanda's growth felt believable, and Merry added just the right touch of heart to the story.

Huge thanks to BookSirens and Elizabeth Standish for the ARC copy!

🐕Sometimes I choose books with my brain going off experience or trusted recommendations other times I go with my heart venturing into the unknown. Both are fine ways to pick the next read, but when a blind pick comes through there's this surprising rush that borders on wonderment. A Little Merry Christmas is one such pick.🐕

I couldn't resist the cover art featuring a yellow lab. My yellow lab was my best friend for eleven years. I miss her always, but during the holidays I miss her even more. In her last years she napped under the Christmas tree until she couldn't get under it anymore then I pulled her bed right beside it instead. The dog on the cover is named Merry, and she is one of the pets who needs a home at the Hamilton Animal Shelter. I know there are a lot of books that promise cute cozy Christmas vibes with animals on the cover, but there is a richer storyline here. Despite having a romantic thread, I would consider this Women's Fiction. There are some spicy scenes, but they are not crass.

Amanda Barnard is reaching for the stars in her advertising career. Thanks to her boss she keeps hitting the ceiling instead. She agrees to take on the pro bono client to once again showcase her skills for promotion. The client is the local animal shelter that will have to close its doors in the upcoming year without donors. She jumps in ready to go off leash, but Elias the shelter's veterinarian has to reign her in. Amanda doesn't have any idea about what new environments and stresses can do to dogs. The pair have to learn to compromise because average fundraisers will not save the shelter. Amanda's creative side develops Twelve Days of Dogmas to generate interest in the shelter. Pets who need homes are alternating days with those hoping to adopt. Everyone except fearful Merry is placed with their first family in the initial phase. Ever the team player, Amanda agrees to take Merry for the first round. Merry isn't an easy case and Amanda is inexperienced with animals, so their path hits a few snags.

I loved the history of WWII dogs that was included. The fact certain animals had issues and people misread them was great and lent gravity to the story. Amanda had genuine struggles in her career forcing her to grow a lot in the short page count. The pacing was great. I liked that there was enough holiday vibes without it feeling cheesy. The ending is so tidy you could place a bow on it, but it IS a Christmas story after all, so it fits.

My expectations were exceeded by a mile!

A must read for dog lovers!

📚MY REVIEW:

Are you looking for an adorably cute holiday romance that will fill your heart with all the holiday cheer you can handle? Look no further than A Little Merry Christmas from Elizabeth Standish. This book had me smiling and feeling all the feels from beginning to end -- and I think you'll agree it's the feel-good holiday romance you need in your life.

Be warned -- this grumpy-sunshine holiday romance is so much more than just a cute love story! This book reminds us to know our own worth -- and fight for it -- and the entire book centers around a local animal shelter that's committed to finding homes for all of the dogs and cats who find themselves in the shelter.

Amanda is committed to perfection in her job as an advertising executive and getting a promotion she deserves. Elias is a part-time veterinarian at the local animal shelter, which is struggling to raise enough money to keep its doors open. Amanda is assigned by her firm to the animal shelter's pro bono account to create a campaign that can prevent the shelter from being shuttered. Though she comes with so many good ideas, she's not a dog person. But she's trying her best to be successful in this fundraising campaign so she can get her much-desired promotion, but grumpy control-freak Elias isn't making this easy on her. As Amanda spearheads the dog-fostering events leading up to Christmas, she finds herself agreeing to foster Merry, a sweet pup who is a bit timid. Can she succeed in saving the shelter and getting her promotion? But will she end up succeeding in getting so much more?

This quick read is PERFECT for anyone who loves holiday romances and has a big heart for the welfare of animals. It overflows with warmth and joy, and it has all the sugary sweetness of holiday happy endings that you could ever hope for! If you're a dog person who loves holiday rom-coms, this is the must-read, feel-good holiday romance of the season for you. And it's available now!

A Little Merry Christmas is Elizabeth Standish‘s first story in her new series, The Holidays in Hamilton. It feels like a Hallmark movie, except it does contain a single steamy scene.

Amanda Barnard is a hardworking and talented employee at an advertising firm, expecting a promotion after 8 years. So when her less productive male colleague is given the coveted position, Amanda realizes that her work isn’t valued. She knows that it would be hard to find another position in the small town of Hamilton, so she negotiates another chance with the firm’s owner. He has offered to publicize the failing animal shelter, and Amanda jumps on the chance to save it and save her career.

When Amanda visits the Hamilton Animal Shelter and meets the overworked director, she is paired with the guarded young veterinarian, Elias Exley. She is the sunshine to his grumpy, and he doesn’t like any of her naïve ideas. However, she is determined to be successful and develops a fostering campaign, the Twelve Days of Dogmas. Then she winds up fostering a timid Labrador named Merry, the only dog who wasn’t chosen.

Amanda creates all kinds of chaos setting up events for thirty dogs, and slowly she forms bonds with both Merry and Elias. Meanwhile her boss only wants her to give minimal time to this shelter project, so she’s trying to balance her workload and caring for Merry. The reader knows that certain outcomes are inevitable and just goes along for the ride.

A Little Merry Christmas was my first book by this author, and I look forward to reading future stories in her Holidays in Hamilton series. Every reader who has ever been passed over for a promotion that they deserve will identify with Amanda. It’s amazing that she worked at that firm for eight years and tolerated the owner’s poor treatment of her. I like how the author was able to incorporate the war dogs into the plot and develop the characters over the month-long story timeline. This story is begging to be adapted into a Hallmark movie.

Thank you to Elizabeth Standish and Goodreads for a complimentary copy of A little merry Christmas: a Hamilton holiday novel (Kindle Edition) for an honest review.

I thought this was a sweet, heartwarming, quick and easy read. I read this between some heavier books and it was delightful. At several points I was choked up because of course animals and what they do to us as people and their nature for loving and how to bring the low out and back to people. This definitely has the feels and environment for a perfect Hallmarkish movie. I enjoyed the characters, especially the side characters – human and animal. Amanda (FMC) was a good character – she was a bit whiny, defensive, grudge-holder, and a perfectionist but that was her flaw she needed to overcome throughout her story. She ended right where she needed to be and a changed person. Dr. Elias (MMC), part-time Vet for the shelter was everything I wanted him to be – a bit standoffish, protective, sometimes grumpy but when he opened up and smiled – all was right with the world. They were definitely at odds throughout the first half of the story but soon started to understand each other. Merry stole the show and might have infused some Christmas magic into their HEA.

Marilyn and Mr. Wilson and the story around the animal shelter being started in Hamilton by war dogs from the early wars was fantastic. I loved learning about the war dogs and how they came to be. I likedTom – her colleague and how they came to terms and seemed to earn each other’s support and respect.

I look forward to more Hamilton stories.

What to Expect:
• Sweet & Quick read – could be a movie right now and I would watch it
• Very Little spice – and I was ok with that
• Grumpy, Sassy, Assertive
• Growth of characters
• Vulnerability
• Protective
• Imperfect perfect characters all around

If you’re in the mood for a holiday story filled with dogs, festive chaos, and a heroine you can’t help rooting for, this is an absolute delight.

Amanda Barnard enters the season determined to prove herself after being passed over for the promotion she worked so hard to earn. Her chance at redemption comes in the form of a last-minute marketing assignment for the Hamilton Animal Shelter — and suddenly she’s juggling event planning, fundraising pressure, and a whole lot of dogs. The only thing sharper than the learning curve is her reluctant partner in the project, Elias, the brilliant-but-prickly shelter vet who challenges her at every turn.

What makes this book sparkle isn’t just the cozy holiday atmosphere — though there’s plenty of that — but how much heart is wrapped inside it. From the joyful chaos of community adoption events to the tender bond Amanda forms with a timid foster dog named Merry, the story blends laugh-out-loud mishaps with genuinely touching moments of growth and self-worth. Watching Amanda fight for her ideas, her career, and her right to be proud of who she is feels incredibly satisfying.

The chemistry between Amanda and Elias is wonderfully built — slow-burn, complicated, and occasionally spicy enough to make you forget it’s snowing outside. But the romance never overshadows the deeper message: that success doesn’t come from perfection, but from daring to show up as yourself.

A warm, spirited, and wonderfully dog-filled holiday romance. If you love stories where every animal finds a home, heroines find their voice, and love (eventually) gets everything right, tuck this one into your stocking.

amanda barnard has always believed that careful planning and polished work are the keys to moving up in the advertising world. she has the talent, the clients, and the reputation to match. but when an all staff message reveals that the promotion she expected has been given to a colleague, she starts to question what the company truly sees in her.

determined to prove herself, amanda accepts a free project just weeks before christmas. her task is to help the struggling hamilton animal shelter, a place already stretched thin and relying heavily on elias, the quiet vet who doesn’t trust her ideas.

amanda throws herself into creating a holiday fostering idea called the twelve days of dogmas, convinced it will rescue both the shelter and her career.as the days go on, amanda juggles unexpected chaos from the campaign, online surprises, and a boss who refuses to acknowledge her work.

yet somewhere in the middle of it all, she begins to adore a dog who she reluctantly took home. with every event she shares with the shelter team, she finds it harder to keep elias at a distance and slowly the dog, merry, and elias show her that she doesn’t need somebody else’s approval to believe in her own worth.

wow what a sweet, christmassy romance book!! i really enjoyed reading this, it made me feel so cosy and happy. i mean who doesn’t love christmas, romance and a bunch of dogs being their silly little selves in every chapter!!!

Amanda works in advertising and has been working toward a promotion. She finds out that she has lost the promotion, but gets an opportunity at another attempt to show her leadership skills and commitment to the advertising company at which she works. She finds a pro bono assignment to help the Hamilton Animal Shelter.

She creates a campaign for a Twelve Days of Dogmas to help 30 dogs find new homes. She meets Elias, the shelter’s vet, as well as Merry, a Labrador she fosters. In the midst of what feels like chaos, Amanda learns to let go of her perfectionism, chart a new path forward for herself, and find love.

I enjoyed how this story celebrated animals and all the hard working staff and volunteers at animal shelters helping animals to find their forever homes! I encourage readers to see the Author’s Note to learn more about the history of War Dogs. The dogs, (especially Merry!), were the stars of the story!

This story is cozy and heartwarming, and there are endearing themes and characters. I enjoyed seeing how each of the characters grew, with Amanda learning to let go of her perfectionism and Elias learning to heal and forgive himself. Their relationship build with a steady, slow burn over the course of the story. The book is a great read during the holiday season!

Thank you @elizabeth.standish and @novel.tours for the #gifted book.

A LITTLE MERRY CHRISTMAS is a heartwarming and fun story taking place in a small town during December. The characters were relatable and all the shelter dogs stole my heart.

Amanda was passed over for a promotion that was given to her male coworker. Amanda takes a pro bono assignment to try to earn a promotion. With just a couple weeks before Christmas, she needs to save the failing Hamilton Animal Shelter. She comes up with an ad campaign, the Twelve Days of Dogmas, to save both the shelter and her future. The campaign pairs families with shelter dogs changing families every two days with fun activities to get the community involved. Shelter vet Elias was maddenly perceptive and challenged Amanda. His main concern was the safety of the dogs.

The Twelve Days of Dogmas had fun events and the shelter dogs antics had me laughing. I couldn't help but fall in love with the shelter puppy Merry who stole Amanda's heart. Elias was grumpy but you could tell by the way he treated the dogs that he had a soft gooey center. Amanda and Elias connection was slow but worth the wait as Elias' past heartache was revealed. There is a tiny bit of spice.

There are some important messages in this book that are handled beautifully. The author's note gives more information on the War Dogs of WWll. If you love cozy small town romances with heart, then I recommend A Little Merry Christmas.

Amanda works hard, one could say she’s a workaholic. She’s been working to impress her boss, but when she’s passed over for a promotion, she’s unsure how else she can prove herself. She urges her boss to approve her pro bono PR assignment and sets off to save the Hamilton Animal Shelter. She’s in for a surprise, though, as her campaign is fraught with complications. Amanda is convinced she needs to do better to prove herself to others, but an adorable dog named Merry and Vet Elias show Amanda what life is all about.

A Little Merry Christmas is a delightful holiday women’s fiction with engaging characters, descriptive narration, emotional tension, all set during the holidays. The main thrust of the story revolves around Amanda and her journey to discover her worth. But, to be honest, the dogs steal every scene, especially Merry. They are so adorable and I know dog lovers will love this story as much as I did. Fans of classic Hallmark Channel movies will love A Little Merry Christmas.

Elizabeth Standish has penned a heartfelt, emotional holiday story. Her prose carries the reader from scene to scene. Her writing is relatable, and many readers will identify with Amanda. Take my advice and pick up The Little Merry Christmas.

This is was quite an interesting read, a rom com filled with the magic of CHristmas, a grumpy vet, the cutest dogs, and a girl you will root for!!

Amanda is a city girl who is an ace at marketing, she creates the campaigns and gets the results, however is overlooked when a promotion comes up, so she feels unseen and takes a pro-bono contract to create a campaing for an animal enter. Well, she is about to meet the grumpy vet and the a group of dogs that will bring chaos to her already out of place campaign, "The 12 Days of Dogmas"

As they get working together, she will get a rescue dog - Merry-, and the relationship with Ethan will bloom as they start to get to knwo each other. BUt there is still so much going on, between the small town vibes, the dogs and the moments, Amanda will come to realize that the need to shine at work is nothing compared to the love animals provide, to the feel good sense of a job well done, to the smoldering glances of Ethan,

A Little Merry Christmas by Elizabeth Standish is book 1 in The Holidays in Hamilton Series.

Amanda Barnard has built her career on being perfect. She has perfected advertising, making campaigns that resonate, believing alot of her success is due to being prepared. When she receives an email that announces the promotion she was gunning for went to a coworker, she stops and assesses why.

Amanda is then giving one last shot to get a promotion, the assignment is to save a failing Hamilton Animal Shelter just days before Christmas. Of course, the Shelter's veterinarian Elias Exley is not going to make her job and easy one. Amanda comes up with a brilliant marketing campaign, the Twelve Days of Dogmas.

Between 30 dogs, mishaps that go viral and a resistant boss this campaign is chaotic. Amid the chaos, Amanda also fosters a dog named Merry and begins to fall for Elias.

I loved that this book has sweet holiday vibes mixed with some adorable dogs being rescued from a shelter. If you love holiday vibes with the notion that every dog gets a forever home then this book is for you.

I received a copy of this book from NetGalley and Thistle and Pheonix Press in exchange for my honest opinion and review.

This book is pure festive delight—like wrapping yourself in a soft blanket while the snow falls outside. A Little Merry Christmas gives us Amanda Barnard, a rising star in advertising whose career takes a detour just days before Christmas. Her new assignment? Save a struggling animal shelter with a holiday campaign and maybe, just maybe, save herself in the process.

The Twelve Days of Dogmas campaign is adorable and chaotic in all the best ways, and Amanda’s reluctant partnership with Elias, the shelter’s guarded vet, adds just the right amount of slow-burn tension. But the real heart of the story is Merry, the timid Labrador who steals the show—and Amanda’s heart.

Standish blends humor, heartache, and holiday magic with ease. The setting sparkles, the dogs are irresistible, and Amanda’s journey toward self-worth feels honest and uplifting. It’s a story about finding joy in unexpected places, and learning that sometimes the best gifts are the ones we give ourselves.

Perfect for pet lovers, holiday romantics, and anyone who believes in second chances wrapped in twinkly lights.

With thanks to Elizabeth Standish, the publisher and Netgalley for the ARC.

This contemporary romance tackles an important topic: a woman being passed over for a promotion in favor of a male colleague who contributes less. While I appreciated the theme, I found the heroine’s response—taking on a pro bono project for an animal shelter just to boost her chances—a bit questionable. Supporting a shelter is wonderful, of course, but using it as a career strategy felt off.

My biggest issue, though, is how heavily the story leans on the dog-themed Christmas event and the “Twelve Days of Dogmas” campaign. Instead of the romance being the heart of the book, it often felt like an afterthought to the advertising plotline. The relationship developments didn’t feel natural, and the quirky twists sometimes seemed forced rather than charming.

That said, the story has its sweet moments, and the holiday atmosphere is cozy. If you love dogs and festive small-town vibes, this might hit the spot. For me, it was an okay read—but I was hoping for a stronger, more organically developed romance.

“A Little Merry Christmas” by Elizabeth Standish

About as Hallmark Christmas as you can get! This was an adorable story and as a person who is deeply invested in animal rescue, I loved the shelter and animal adoptions/fostering at the heart of this book. Amanda is out to prove that she deserves a big promotion as an ad executive and she’s been tasked with a pro bono client, the Hamilton Animal Shelter as a test of her skills. Amanda is not afraid of a challenge, though, and is ready to go above and beyond for the animal shelter - including a month-long fostering event to give families the opportunity to meet multiple dogs plus community-focused events to bring in donors and put the spotlight back on the shelter. There’s only one problem - the shelter’s grumpy vet is not onboard with Amanda’s grand vision. Elias is more concerned with animal safety and comfort (rightfully so). Can these two work together to bring good results for the shelter and the dogs? Or will Amanda’s perfectionist tendencies and ulterior motives derail her adoption events? Really a sweet story and of course, a happy ending!
